“The brightest color in the room The brightest color in the room is actress Rachel Brosnahan’s red hair, made all the more vibrant against her pale pink raincoat.

Outside the window of the High Line Hotel, New York City provides a moving concrete backdrop. She is comfortable with its steeliness and warms to its charm with a playful glance.

“I love New York. The energy in the city is unlike anywhere else I have ever been,” Rachel confides.

“I feel rejuvenated by that energy. I couldn’t live anywhere else. You walk out your door, whether you have a thousand layers on or not, there is that moment of breathing in New York and entering this flow of people trying to get shit done.”

She possesses a duality, which has turned out to be her secret weapon, brandishing a lynchpin of talent when you thought she was just a pretty face.

Rachel doesn’t just lean in to the camera with a supermodel’s blank stare, but rather she takes each flash as a moment to try on different emotions. Whether excited at the stylist’s puppy padding into the shot, or pointing her ‘fuck you’ finger at the camera, there is a secret storyline behind her brilliant blue eyes.

“I really love when Rachel is just being herself in clothes because she is such a New Yorker in the way she dresses,” remarks Josh Liebman, Rachel’s stylist. “She prefers comfort, but we are working on the heels. It’s a struggle.”

Although designers Christian Siriano, Zac Posen, Erin Fetherston, and the new label of Harare are behind her unique style of juxtaposing lace with edgy pieces, she looks just as chic when rocking a pair of sensible Aerosole flats.

character, I can relate to her now, but in the beginning it felt like the furthest thing from me.”

An example of the evolution of the Rachel’s character, and of Rachel’s acting abilities, takes place in the first season of House of Cards when Rachel seduces an alcoholic politician and then later encourages him to drink, she makes what could have been a flat, malevolent character into an iconic, and witty temptress. Naturally, he fell off the wagon, leading to his demise.

“I thought I was reaching so far, it was a relief that people bought it,” explains Rachel. “I grew up with Rachel. She was my first job post-college so I was learning a lot playing that role.” In the episodes that followed, Rachel’s character was given more depth, defying expectations by becoming one of the most relatable women in the series.

Few of her onscreen characters are ever what they seem. A hallmark of her talent is that in an instant she captures the audience by revealing another more complex layer of her character. She plays Jolene Parker in the NBC television series The Blacklist, who is first an innocent grade school teacher. But with a twitch of her facial expressions, she begins to reveal herself as an associate to the show’s arching villain.

However, by no means is Rachel’s talent limited to playing the conniving villainess. There is always an unguarded aspect of her performances where the character becomes three dimensional, more vulnerable than at first glance. For instance, in her steamy House of Cards scene with lover Lisa, played by Kate Lyn Sheil, the audience sees the honesty in their love making, whereas before she only used the act of sex as leverage.

Much like her character on the Netflix series House of Cards, Rachel has transformed from the peripheries of a subplot into the full focus. First Rachel’s character was just a call girl, a patsy in a dangerous game. But before the audience’s eyes, she quickly evolved into a person with layers of rich inner story.

Despite it being undeniably uncomfortable to shoot, Rachel had no qualms about being nude, saying, “It’s easy when it’s such an important scene in the script. It wasn’t gratuitous. Kate is great. We get along super well. You just have to commit to it. It’s always kind of weird I guess. You have to laugh a lot, but it’s easy when it feels like it is a necessary part of the story telling.”

“The role was so far from what I knew I could do or wanted to do,” reflects Rachel. “It felt like I was putting something on. I have picked up a lot from Rachel from attempting to find a way into that

Perhaps an even more difficult place to get to emotionally is one of devastation. One of her toughest scenes – both for her to perform, and for the audience to watch – was the emotional break-up with 17

Lisa. Rachel credits her ability to reach and maintain such intensity in her scenes to the mentors at New York University and the acclaimed Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute, particularly teacher Lola Cohen.

“I felt she personally pushed me in a way I never knew I could go. I thought it was unnecessary and pointless,” recalls Rachel about her teacher. Then House of Cards happened, and she was holding a knife to her antagonist Doug Stamper, played by Michael Kelly. “To keep the emotional level at 1000 for the four or five hours we shot the scene was one of the hardest things I had to do...and suddenly I got it. She was pushing us to the limit to see how far we would go and then maintain it.”

Her preparation for becoming the great actress she is, unsurprisingly came from being involved in theater in high school.

Perhaps somewhat more unexpected was that she credits some of her talent to her time on her school’s wrestling team.

“Wrestling is a lot like acting, like improv.

It’s about reading other people, reading their body, anticipating their next move and responding quickly in the moment,” she says gesturing with her hands to reinforce her point. “It feels good to be that strong; it’s something primal and satisfying to get someone in a hold and pin them down.”

However, she quickly reminds us of how she truly sees herself; a star struck geek.

She recently attended the SAG awards with her boyfriend. She won’t reveal who he is, but it’s easy to guess when you share dogs with a handsome gent. We won’t tell you who we think it is, but regardless Maniac sends our love to her sweet pooches Nikki and Winston!

“It’s all about how you feel about yourself. I always feel like such a dork. It’s that weird thing where you get to peek behind the curtains,” she says of meeting many of the people she admires at the awards event. “It feels like you are doing the work and all of the other stuff is a strange other part of it that you don’t see on TV.”

She humbles herself even further, telling us that her 16-year-old sister “thinks I’m a loser!” Funnily enough, Rachel agrees, saying that her sister is in fact the way cooler of, and is proud of both of her younger siblings, and talks effusively about how accomplished her parents are.

Being close to her family seems to have grounded Rachel in a way that’s rare amongst the shooting stars in Hollywood.

However, growing up as a dual citizen to an English mother seems to have given her a kind of fearless curiosity of the world around her as well; which makes sense when you consider acting is a profession that demands one be especially curious and fascinated by other people.

Her aunt is the designer Kate Spade; so naturally she also possesses one hell of an epic wardrobe. Combining this fact with what we already know about this passionate, talented gal, we’re starting to believe she’s superhuman. When asked about her favorite piece from Auntie Kate, she describes an accessory combination that our dreams are made of, “I have this incredible pair of kelly green suede shoes from years ago with a green crystal buckle. I love them!” We can only imagine why!

She goes on about another piece she is in love with – a Sandro dress, “I love lace with an edge. It’s very sleek, but girly. I love something with a little whimsy—a vintage feel, but then throw some combat boots on to edge it up.”

Inspired by intrigue and sensibility in her own fashion sense, Rachel can maintain elegance with a steely twist. Every girl, regardless of her wardrobe, is many things at once. In her work, Rachel often inhabits the duality that many women live in every day, being both vulnerable and strong.

“Everything I imagined about her is completely true. She is one of the most badass women I have ever met. She knows how important it is for women to see themselves on screen, to see every different kind of smile they ever had on their faces.”

Rachel is equally inspired by fantasy as she is by reality, something founded in her childhood through literature. When flying back and forth from England she would take a carry-on filled with books. At night she would listen to stories being read to her, closing her eyes to imagine the characters.

“I loved the Harry Potter series and the Chronicles of Narnia, books with these big worlds that were beyond anything we could experience,” she recalls, talking excitedly about her obsession with reading. “That for me was what made me want to become an actor. It was something I enjoyed thinking about...Even though I wasn’t actively doing anything, it felt like I was playing by just letting my imagination run wild.”

It appears that active imagination has served her well in her career. After we find out what happens to Rachel Posner in House of Cards in February, we will see her in the historically based mini-series The Dovekeepers, and then with Jesse Eisenberg in the movie Louder than Bombs.

She begins the shooting of the second season of Manhattan in April 2015.

She reflects on some of her work and sighs, “It was a dream come true. I have said that a lot this year, but it’s true, every word of it.”

The true talent of Rachel might be that she can slip inside a moment and try on its possibilities, give you a full range of emotion until one locks in place and speaks to the camera. She is an open book and a secret keeper, a girl out of the box.

In November 2014, Rachel worked on an HBO mini-series called Olive Kitteridge, which was based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of short stories revolved around the town of Crosby, Maine. It was there where she worked with one of her heroes, actress Frances McDormand.

Wintertime in Pittsburgh can be unbearably cold and grey, and stretches on for what seems like an eternity.

If you can, avoid the Pittsburgh tundra at all costs by visiting the One&Only Ocean Club in the Bahamas. If there was an Olympics of relaxation, one trip here and you’d win the gold.

This paradise island attracts many to its world-renowned resort, including celebrities Sean Connery, Oprah Winfrey, Selma Hayek, and Lenny Kravitz. They have found their hideaway here; enjoying its white sand beaches, warm Bahamian waters, and even the stars in the never-ending night-blue sky. The utopia first took shape in 1939 when Swedish industrialist, Dr. Axel Wenner-Gren, discovered the island while sailing on his private yacht during a world cruise, calling it “Hog Island.” In 1961, the Island came under the ownership Huntington Hartford, whose first item of business was to officially change its name to “Paradise Island;” which we can’t help but think was a good idea. He would soon after commission a 52-room hotel and multiple four-bedroom cottages be built; which were subsequently dubbed the “Ocean Club.” The small harbor was also transformed into a lavish, 65-craft yacht basin, and construction on an 18 hole-golf course commenced.

In September 2003, in order to celebrate the island’s rich history and give the resort a name it truly deserves (unless you know another place with water-taxi services), the property was renamed the One&Only Ocean Club.

It’s no surprise that the cuisine is just as pleasing as the island. Guests can savor Mediterranean meals under the stars, or in the elegant courtyard terrace around a candlelit fountain pool. ora Sigesmund is one fashion-for ward entrepreneur. She and husband Perry opened PerLora back in 1994 and shared their love for modern furniture and home décor with the people of Pittsburgh. Although her talent for interiors is obvious, we explored her passion for fashion and had the privilege of previewing her designer-filled closet.

Maniac Magazine: What does fashion mean to you?

Lora Sigesmund: Fashion is a mode of expressing who you are. It is a form of art. Fashion consists of beautiful fabrics, architectural shapes, details and colors. Each of these elements work together to create a statement. As Coco Chanel said “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

MM: How do you think that the worlds of fashion and interiors relate to each other?

LS: Fashion and interiors are totally interrelated. Just as clothes can express who you are, furniture and design will do the same. PerLora is all about customization. Whether it is texture, shape, or color, you can mix and match materials to achieve your own unique look. For me, it is just as important to feel comfortable in your own space as it is to feel comfortable in your own skin.

MM: Who are you favorite designers?

LS: Some of my favorite pieces are from Save The Queen, Rag and Bone, and Vince. I do have a fascination with Coco Chanel as a person. With that being said, I like to mix and match pieces so often, it is not as important who the designer is as to what the piece looks like.

Architect Ben Maguire:

from INSPIRATION to

CREATION

Today’s Pittsburgh is a city of opportunity. It is dynamic, diverse, and full of creative, passionate young professionals helping the city of bridges to build and grow each day. One of these people is Ben Maguire, a Pittsburgh area native and accomplished local architect.

Growing up in White Oak, PA, Maguire remembers having always been a builder of sorts; whether it was Legos ® and blocks, or treehouses and forts, he spent his time creating and designing. His skill at design, as well as drawing and analytical thinking, made his choice of career path seem like a no-brainer. He enrolled in the rigorous and challenging architecture program at Carnegie Mellon University. He recalls it being the first time he learned how to truly think and create. “Up to that point, school was all about retention, learning facts and reciting them for your next test.

Architectural problem solving is very open-ended and subjective, so the ‘solutions’ to architectural problems couldn’t be found in a book, you had to create them - and often from a blank page.”

After finishing his studies, Maguire dedicated himself to meaningful progress in Pittsburgh neighborhoods. His first development project, the G-Lofts in Lawrenceville, 38

was an opportunity for him to utilize a wide range of skills, both creatively and in the context of business and management. In addition to designing, he also handled the entitlements from the city, arranged the finances, bought and sold property, and hired his own contractors. Maguire wanted to create, from scratch, truly dynamic spaces that were memorable and unique.

Working with very narrow lots, he utilized height and light exposure to design open spaces. “The houses are only 18’ wide,” said Maguire, reflecting on this project. “In order to make them feel bigger, I cut a hole right through the middle of the house that leads all the way up to the roof, where there are skylights. The staircase wraps around this central atrium space, which is flooded with natural light. I decided to finish off this multilevel atrium/staircase with a rooftop deck that has dynamite views toward downtown Pittsburgh.” This project stands as one of the most rewarding ventures of his active career.

As far as style is concerned, Maguire places a strong emphasis on open plan living and strong outdoor connections when working residentially. He aims to create spaces that rely on a logical scale, proportion, and flow.

Style can be groomed and adjusted once the “bones” are just right. He is also a proponent of keeping things simple. “It’s a process of refining or editing down to the essence of what the project should be. Finding the piece that every project has, which is the soul of the project... Maybe it’s a killer view out toward the city, or a unique staircase, or a show-stopping kitchen. My goal is to find that specific aspect and then strip away the elements that hide or interfere with that experience. It’s about exemplifying the positives and downplaying the negatives.”

Maguire continues to be creatively inspired day-by-day.

The dynamic duo that owns and operates the store is Brianne and Michele Conley, a mother-daughter team who fused their passions of wardrobe and décor to bring us a space that is beyond chic.

“Opening a boutique has honestly been something I’ve always dreamed of. That’s cliché, but it’s true,” Brianne says. “My mom has a talent for interiors; people constantly compliment the way she decorated our home.

We hoped putting our brains together would create something Pittsburgh would love.”

MM: How did you come up with the name No. 14?

BC: Fourteen has been a number that has continued to show up in my life. It’s the year I graduated from college, the year the business opened, I am 1 of 4 children, it is my boyfriend’s high school & college football jersey number, and he and I started dating when I was 14. 2014 was a very eventful year for me. Naming the store was a hard decision for me to make; I wanted it to have a soul.

MM: How would you describe your personal style?

BC: Feminine and flirty, maybe a little quirky. I am still swooning over Louis Vuitton’s spring/summer 2012 carousel runway show. I’d like to have every one of those pieces in my closet.

MM: Who is your favorite designer and why?

BC: Valentino has always had a soft spot in my heart. When I splurge on a purchase it’s usually for bags or shoes and I gravitate toward Valentino for both.

MM: What is one piece in your closet you could not live without?

BC: A grey V-neck tee. A pair of great jeans, a basic tee, and pointed toe pumps will never go out of style.

When Christina Caradona of Trop Rouge walked into our High Line Hotel suite, everyone in the room stood at attention. She’s lively, charismatic, and has an unrivaled sense of style. Naturally beautiful with a funky edge, no one is immune to her playful curls and coy smile. Maniac Magazine: How did it all begin?

Hot Haute Hot: We opened in 1999. We had a love of collecting and curating our own homes with one of-a-kind pieces and wanted to share that designing and decorating passion.

MM: What is your collective background in design?

HHH: We have a graphic design degree and a business degree between us, but more importantly, it is combined love for design and decorating. We saw that Pittsburgh did not have homes reflecting a globe trotter style—a style where you’ve traveled everywhere and collected all the things that you love and put them together in one space.

MM: Aside from your shops world traveler vibe, how would you describe your aesthetic?

HHH: It is a mix of modern and vintage. This may sound redundant, but we have things that we love.

Several designs are heirloom pieces and have pasts with an incredible stories behind them. Imagine the story behind the reclaimed shutters from India! That separates us from other designers in terms of being mass-produced.

MM: How do you get pieces to work together?

HHH: Our styles are fairly similar so we try to find pieces that can transition from room to room. If someone has a home that is mostly classical in its furnishings, they can infuse one of our pieces to give the space its own unique sense of style and personality. It is really wonderful to have the opportunity to bring a global style into the design arena of Pittsburgh so that the people here can actually enjoy it, too.

Hot Haute Hot is one of the most fashionable and eclectic furniture stores you’ll come across; and luckily for us, it is located right in Pittsburgh’s equally colorful Strip District. Rose Smith and Keneva Kennedy, the co-owners, have compiled a soulful collection of hand-picked designs from all over the world. Hot Haute Hot designs mix vintage, modern, and travel inspired pieces that are collected in a whimsical and unconventional showroom that changes weekly.

HHH: From the very beginning. We didn’t have a formal way of doing it, it happened organically. In the last five years, people began calling us to work on a few pieces and before we knew it, the clients started to want everything redone from head to toe.

Another aspect of our design is the commercial community. We worked with two restaurants in Sewickley called Mambo Italia and Lula, and the clients that go there and dine come back to us and tell us they want their home to have the same feel as the restaurants. People feel transformed in the restaurants because they have a sense of home.

MM: What advice would you give to someone that’s just starting the process of furnishing their home?

HHH: They have to figure out what is important to them and where they spend most of their time in their home.

Our co-worker Audrey has an interior design degree, so when we get in deep with a project, including blueprints, wiring, and tile, she’s involved in all of that as well. So it depends on what level of attention that customer needs.

But with any renovation, after you’re done with one job, we’ll get another call soon after to do something else. If their dining room has been designed and we finish it, the next thing we know, we’re getting calls to come do the powder room or the office. It is a constant evolution of style and creativity.

MM: You guys seem to always be going through an evolution, in that your showroom is always changing!

HHH: We do that all the time! The really funny about this store is you can come in one week and then the next time you come in, it’s completely different.

MM: What other pieces, aside from furniture, do you carry in the store?

HHH: We have a great gift category that includes everything from jewelry to candles. What’s nice about shopping small is that a lot of the money goes back into this community. It serves local businesses and that’s huge!

MM: When did you start to actually go into people’s homes and design room by room?

MM: What makes the pieces at Hot Haute Hot so special?

HHH: Our products are one of a kind and once they are gone, they’re gone.

There are so many pieces that can serve different purposes depending on your personal style. A shutter can easily become a table top. Reclaimed old structures that are being salvaged easily become beautiful pieces of art and that’s where we shine. We love reclaimed work and it’s huge right now.

MM: It seems like you carry pieces that are unique in style and no matter what the style of the house, the piece fits like an individual statement.

HHH: People could have a modern/contemporary home and yet they’re going to put that one carved piece from India in one of their rooms, and out of every other decoration in their home, somebody’s going to make a comment about that piece.

There is no shortage of statement pieces at Hot Haute Hot. They’ll help you craft a space that, without their helpful guidance, makes items that would seem to contrast on paper, complement each other perfectly in your home. For that perfect mix of personality and style, there’s no place in Pittsburgh that will fulfill your design needs quite like them.

Hair perfectly coiffed and impeccably dressed, Monte Durham is a Southern gentleman, bridal fashion guru, and provider of wedding-saving-sass on TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta. From bridezillas to nightmarish motherin-laws, Monte Durham navigates the always entertaining world of bridal fashion with his infallible wit and keen eye for style. We sat down with Monte to get the full scoop on the upcoming season, and how it all came to be.

MANIAC MAGAZINE: How did you get involved with “Bridals by Lori,” where the show, Say Yes to the Dress, Atlanta is set?

MONTE DURHAM: I met Lori at bridal market in NYC and we just clicked! We have the same viewpoints, and believe in hard work and having fun. One day, she called and asked me to do a pilot with TLC and I thought she was totally insane, but of course, I did!

MM: Did you always have a particular love for bridal, or are you enthusiastic for all fashion?

MD: When I was younger, I always had bridal magazines. I would sit at the counters of department stores while my mother shopped, and would flip through pattern books that I found to be very fascinating.

I was always intrigued with bridal.

MM: You have mentioned Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as one of your personal style icons; what makes her special to you?

MD: Jackie O was elegant, quiet and understated; never overdressed and never underdressed. She was poised and extremely gracious.

MM: If Jackie O was getting married today, and you could be her stylist, how would you dress her?

MD: Oh my God, I would die! She wore a lot of Givenchy, Chanel and Carolina Herrera. I see her in a classic jewel neckline, fitted waist, duchess satin, with a small train. Of course she would have her signature pillbox hat, pearls, and white kid gloves.

modern sass. Oh, I also love all of those yellow bridges! I can run across one, and back across another. Really though, I love the ease of the city and all of the history here.

MM: When someone gets engaged and begins to look at gowns, how can they keep themselves from becoming overwhelmed by all of the choices?

MD: I tell them to use the 3 Fs: Fit, Fashion and Fabric. For the fit, you must think about your body type. What silhouette will flatter your figure? What style do you like? There are many fabrics to choose from: duchess satin, organza, lace, etc. Educate yourself and then try to narrow it down before you make your first appointment.

MM: When a bride loves a dress, but her friends and family do not, what do you recommend she should do?

MD: Stay true to yourself. Buy the dress you love. Get married in the dress you love. Never go down the aisle in the wrong dress.

MM: Lastly, what is the craziest thing that has happened on the show, or the most outrageous bride you have had?

MD: There are so many to choose from, but I’d have to say Nikki Johnson and her five sisters whose names all begin with “N!” None of the girls had gotten married - she was the first. She was bound and determined to break the curse, and she did. She got the dress she loved and is so happy. But the show is packed with crazy moments! This season, we have Naomi Judd and a famous fashion model, so stay tuned!

MM: Would you “Jack her up” like you do with the brides on the show?

MD: Honey, I would blow her out and give her the bob from hell! I am thinking big, huge, full hair.

MM: You have been to Pittsburgh several times. What keeps you coming back?

MD: A few years back, I got a call out of the blue from Wedding Clickers asking me to come and do a meet and greet with their brides. I did my first bridal show and was treated like royalty. The vendors were amazing, the arenas were top notch - just an incredible experience for anyone planning a wedding, anniversary party, baby shower, corporate event, etcetera. It was a fabulous experience, and I have been back for five shows and counting.

MM: What trends do you see in Pittsburgh that you may not see in other parts of the country?

MD: I see a lot of girls here that are rooted in tradition trying to be more modern. They want to uphold family traditions, with a twist of 62

Jazz would always be there… and I knew that I had to break people’s idea that I was just Winton’s piano player.

t center stage, there is a lone piano. A man dressed in forearm armor enters, stage right, growling his way to the keys. There is no sheet music. There isn’t even a piano bench. He begins to play “Sweet Home Alabama,” but it’s not like any other version you’ve ever heard. It’s handclapping, head-thrashing energy. It ROCKS. ELEW is an enigmatic presence. Born into a single-mom household in Camden, New Jersey, Eric Lewis grew up in a very musical household. “We had four pianos... I literally grew up in the middle of them,” he tells me, recalling that he used to wake up to classical music and host neighborhood recitals right in their home.

After a very successful college career at Manhattan School of Music, ELEW realized that winning the prestigious Thelonius Monk competition and being in the esteem of such a great musician as Winton Marsalis “didn’t matter... I wasn’t going to get a record deal.

No one could teach you sex appeal,” which he realized was an unfortunate, but literal key component to commercial success.

He was young, and by his own admission, out of shape. After no deal was made to record an album, he felt stuck. When asked if there was any particular instance that lead to the creation of his own genre, ELEW said it simply, “survival and frustration.” He decided to give himself 10 years to set out on his own. “Jazz would always be there… and I knew that I had to break people’s idea that I was just Winton’s piano player.”

ELEW studied and became versed in the art of branding and created ROCKJAZZ. Think popular music infused with killer improvisational skills. “I started listening to Linkin Park… I started wearing skinny jeans… I stood up to three hours to play… I lost weight… I wore armor” – which has become one of his signatures – “I demonstrated from the look to the sound, and I protected and hid it ‘til the time was right.”

When Yamaha offered ELEW an endorsement, he began playing anywhere and everywhere he could. If there was a party, he flew in a piano and he rocked. Over time, word began to spread of his incredible talent. Soon, he had some of the biggest names in show business as his fans. Some ELEW enthusiasts include Josh Groban and Will Smith, who he sees as just people, “artists, and they get the difficulties.” However, he still does admit that at times it is “surrealistic when Spiderman or the Wolf of Wall Street walk up to you and say hi.”

ELEW’s talent doesn’t stop at the keys. His DJ career is also booming, and he’s taking his style from soiree to after party. And be on the lookout for his directorial debut! He’s proud to announce that his first horror flick is creeping over the horizon.

The way ELEW attacks music is both aggressive and beautiful, and people are taking notice. ELEW is not just an artist. He is the art. He is ROCKJAZZ.

exclusively post-war furniture and art from the 50s-70s (many items come from either Italy or Denmark) and offers consultation and restorations of these objects. “Though I’m not an interior designer, I can make suggestions on what would work for customers needs, and within their space and budget.” Jason also explained why he finds himself attracted to this particular period, “What I love about the post-war (mid-century) style is the form and function of each piece. You had a point in time where modernism was having a significant impact on the world, with the help of the true design visionaries of the period.”

Not unlike the modernist movement in art, post-war furniture did away with traditionalism in favor of more simple and elegant forms. Just browsing through McClellend’s collection you get a sense for the level of artistry and design that went into this style. His collection is a pastiche of posts and beams, incorporating elaborate yet simple lamps, tables, and chairs.

Thick, bulkier forms from previous eras of furniture are done away with in favor of more sleek, thinner designs. Spartan, metal desk lamps are contrasted by large scintillating chandeliers and glass candlesticks of varying heights, which look like they could have been sculpted from ice.

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the post-war style is the degree of variety in its designs, yet still appearing as if they could easily exist together in the same space.

According to Jason, “The reason that furniture from 20th century style is appealing in the 21st century is due to the uniqueness of design with consideration to comfort.

The post-war movement in furniture is still appealing in many of the same ways people still listen to Jazz. It has become classic but still retains that distinctness of form it became known for.”

One of the great things about art is that is often sets out to completely change the established notions of what beauty or attractiveness can be. 20th century art especially balked at tradition, with artists taking risks by experimenting with shapes and delving into the abstract. This shift in style and experimentation wasn’t limited to paintings or sculptures, and its influence continues to inspire even through the 21st century.

If you don’t consider furniture art in its own right, then you would 66

do well to peruse the amazing collection of furniture at Finest 20th Century on the Southside. Owner Jason McClellend sells and restores post-war, 20th century furniture with a vintage style that proves to be cutting-edge (and comfortable) despite being half a century in the making.

A Talent of Global Proportions

rank De Biasi isn’t just a designer, artist, or creator. He’s a master at his craft in every conceivable way. His resume includes working for Christie’s New York, and currently you can find him serving as Director of Interiors for the worldrenowned Peter Marino. With over 20 years of experience, his works can be traced across the world from the Middle East, Europe, and China. His designs have been featured in publications such as Vogue, Architectural Digest Italy, New York Magazine, and even Home Decorating China.

During his time with Christies New York, Frank forged a deep appreciation for fine art, antiques, and the history of design, saying, “I am inspired by culture – everything from travel to fashion to history.”

This has lead to an aesthetic that defies description, simply because it encompasses so many things at once. He tells us it’s a mixture of “old with new, entertaining, living with art, and focusing on the finer details of design, like a great rung that compliments an amazing painting or sculpture.”

He has seemingly designed everything, from a Moroccan retreat,

to a chic Manhattan Penthouse, with each project crafted carefully and uniquely styled.

Mr. de Biasi even had some advice for us Maniacs who are doing some home renovation. The moral of the story: pay attention to what you’re working with and highlight what you have! “When renovating a home, it is important to pay attention to the architectural detail and millwork,” he explained. “By focusing and refreshing some of the homes existing architectural details, the entire look and feel can be brighter and fresher and these details really pay off.”

His designs feature a creative juxtaposition between the rich and eclectic, the sophisticated and whimsical, and the Elizabethan and modern. In doing so, he creates a look that hasn’t been seen before. But his look doesn’t mean that if you want to emulate his style you have to spend a fortune, “The key is to keep the focus on the items that are timeless that you love and change the less expensive items when you feel the need to update.”

Classical and cutting-edge celebrate a beautiful marriage in Frank’s world of design. A world that we should all be fortunate to be a part of.

Shawn Henderson: THE TIMELESS MODERNIST

Shawn Henderson was born to design. And it seems he’s always known that, too. “I grew up knowing exactly what I wanted to do for a living and where I wanted to live.” After receiving his BFA in Design, he followed his dream all the way to New York City, with its kinetic energy that pushes us to be our best selves. And he’s been taking the design world by storm with his firm, Shawn Henderson Interior Design.

But his talents aren’t just limited to New York; his work can be found all over the East Coast, from swanky homes in Chelsea and the bustling Flat Iron District, to an Upstate New York cottage and a manor in Connecticut. Shawn’s firm has also designed in Los Angeles, London, and Paris.

His aim is to create interiors that “inspire you daily through nuance,” a philosophy that has served him well. “My creative 72

” With a deep appreciation for respecting the environment, Shawn Henderson works with sustainable materials, vintage furnishings, and chooses products that are honestly made. When he’s not designing residential and commercial spaces, he’s working on a furniture line he developed and launched.

wall combines with the industrial feel of the exposed ductwork, brick walls, and large metal staircase. The bar is impressive; made of poured concrete, inlaid with the logos of five mills that at one time defined this area. An ornate collection of metalwork sits behind the bar with twenty homemade metal tap handles framing a crane hook and gear work from what looks to have been a large piece of machinery. This is fitting when you consider the establishment’s namesake.

Dorothy No. 6 was one of the largest blast furnaces in the world before it closed in the 1980s. Tom Kazar, the owner, describes the name as paying homage to the area and to his brother, who worked for the steel mill as a high climber and part of the crew that eventually dismantled the plant.

HOMESTEAD TURNS UP THE HEAT

Just off the Homestead High Level bridge on 8th Avenue, you will find this unexpected and unassuming new restaurant and bar. Opened in October of this past year in a spot that remained vacant for the previous four, The Blast Furnace Cafe is not your typical neighborhood watering hole. Especially not one you may have expected in Homestead.

The decor offers a glimpse of what you can expect from the experience. The large ornate crystal chandelier in the multi-story foyer and collection of local artwork on the 74

Tom may also not be your typical restaurateur.

In addition to Dorothy 6, he owns and operates a local body shop in West Mifflin.

As someone who grew up there, he wanted to bring something to the area that was not just another local bar with standard food. The drink menu itself proves to be anything but average. Yes, they offer a number of classic cocktails, a Moscow Mule or a Cucumber Collins (Gin, Ginger Liqueur, and soda), but the draft beer menu stands out from your average bars. Those homemade metal tap handles have twenty craft beers behind them that are posted on a large chalkboard beer menu on the wall.

When it comes to the food, Tom describes the menu as high-quality comfort food.

The meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, & stewed tomatoes seems to illustrate that concept perfectly.

The menu isn’t extensive but appears to

VOODOO BREWERY If you’re in the mood for an after-dinner drink, I suggest you walk about two blocks away from Dorothy 6, go onto 9th Avenue where you will find a place where the beer is so good, the only explanation is black magic. Voodoo Brewery, a craft brewery based in Meadville, Pa, opened this location this past February in what used to be the Homestead Borough Municipal Building.

The restoration and transformation of the space has been an extremely robust effort with a huge contribution to a small army of volunteers that assisted with everything from the cleanup to the artwork on the walls and ceilings. hit the mark. The patrons at the bar rave about the pierogies, stuffed with cheddar or jalepeño, that are lovingly served with caramelized onions and brussel sprouts. The reason they’re so good might be on account that it’s a family recipe; you have his sister Bernadette to thank for them!

They are open for brunch on Sunday and although you could count the menu items on both hands, you will be happy with any choice you make. The hearty-looking options are comprised of a few different variations of eggs benedict which are a local favorite. On the sweet and savory side, you can try the chocolate zucchini french toast sticks. The first bite will make your eyes roll back a little.

I paired it with The Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout on tap and, like the combination of steel and style; it was a perfect pair.

The space, which is airy, brightly colored, and uniquely adorned with a wooden bar that extends the width of the place—is in a section of the building that was once a fire station until about seven years ago. The reclaimed barn wood on the walls along with some neon-colored graffiti on the walls and ceiling give the place a rustic, hip vibe. One of the many chalk murals is made up of all the names of the volunteers who helped to transform the building, which adds a touch of sweetness to the hip space.

While Voodoo Brewery serves always serves a variety of year-round brews that are listed and described on a chalkboard wall behind the bar, they also offer seasonal and single hop series that will vary throughout the year. The people behind the bar are accommodating and creative—even if beer isn’t your favorite beverage of choice, they have a beer version of a mimosa made with orange and pineapple juice that will be especially delicious refreshing in the summer months. One offering that is quickly becoming a local favorite was created specifically for this location, the H2P, or Hail to Pitt. As a loyal Pitt alumnus, it is one of my personal favorites.

Although it’s already an impressive feat to create such a brewery that’s a reflection of past and present, look to the future for more expansion—that may include food, dining areas, and most importantly, even more beer.
