BIGGER BITE

MANIAC TA K E A B I G G E R B I T E OU T TA L I F E

Greetings, Maniac readers! I hope you brought a big appetite because we have a smorgasbord of goodies on the table for our Food & Fashion issue. Believe it or not, Food & Fashion have a lot in common. They say you are what you eat, but sometimes, you are what you wear, too. In both foodie and fashion cultures, exceptional taste is valued, and presentation is everything. In this issue, Susan McLeary took her passion for floral arrangements and made them into succulent jewelry you can adorn around your wrist, neck, or hair, while academic Gretchen Harnick sewed together years of industry experience to create a Pattern to Plan business to help fashion startups. And Keep Pittsburgh Dope’s Chancelor Humphrey explains why unreliable photographers helped spur him to become the Steel City’s version of Bill Cunningham. Just as there’s a pop of personality when it comes to style, the same can be said for food. Pittsburgh establishments like Mediterra Bakehouse are adding local flavor to their breads, while in his new book The Roots’ Questlove compares work in the music industry to the art of food. Plus, local bloggers like Caitlin Shoemaker, Lindsey Smith, and Caroline ShannonKarasik are taking readers on their vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free journeys. So grab a fork, or maybe a slip on a succulent bracelet (whatever your preference), and enjoy!

Bon Appétit!

Laura Prepon is a Tall Drink of Bone Broth THE A CTRE SS MAY BE S TAS HING F O O DS , B U T S H E ' S RE V E A LIN G M ORE O F HERS ELF IN HER NEW BO O K BY M EGAN M CLACHLAN, PH OT OGRAPH Y BY RAY KACH AT ORIAN

For eight seasons, Laura Prepon played the ultra-cool and confident Donna Pinciotti on Fox’s That ‘70s Show. But even though she portrayed a lanky heartbreaker on-set, off-set Prepon was masking deep-seated body insecurity. “I got into the habit of never watching myself on screen because I didn’t want to be critical of myself and my body,” said Prepon. “It was a very private struggle. Only my very close friends knew the issues I was having.” This battle started when Prepon was just a teenager, after a modeling agency told her they’d sign her if she lost 25 pounds. “I’d never had anybody put attention on my body like that. In a month and a half, I lost the weight, and they signed me and sent me to Milan, Italy. From there, I think I always equated being thin with success. If you look at most actresses, the more successful they get, the thinner they get. That’s not a coincidence.” So when Prepon had problems losing weight and keeping it off, she felt like a failure. Over the course of her twenties, she started on a series of unhealthy diets, which would always result in the same cycle: lose weight, lose energy, and then lose the plan.

She would even bring her own restrictive diet food with her everywhere she went. One of her lowest, most embarrassing points came when she was at a lunch meeting with producers in Beverly Hills, and a waiter told her she couldn’t eat the cabbage soup she had brought in to the restaurant. But after years of yo-yo dieting and trying every method under the West Coast sun (including hormone injections that trick your body into thinking you’re pregnant so you’ll burn more stored fat), Prepon met nutritionist Elizabeth Troy, who changed her life and would collaborate with her on the new book The Stash Plan: Your 21-Day Guide to Shed Weight, Feel Great, and Take Charge of Your Health. “When I met Elizabeth, she had some viewpoints I hadn’t heard yet about the body, which I found really fascinating. I knew the importance of the gallbladder and liver, but not to the extent that we talk about in the book. When I learned this and my body really started changing, I knew I wanted to share it with the world. I had never read, in any book, the information we present in The Stash Plan. Not being biased. It’s the truth.” The Stash Plan consists of five parts, starting with the story of how Laura and Elizabeth arrived at the plan, why the plan works, how to create your own “stash,” recipes including bone broths (which give

“I love the bison burgers, almond bread, ginger shrimp, brothinfused brown rice—all of them really,” said Prepon of her favorite Stash dishes. “These are recipes I eat all the time as well as prepare when I’m entertaining. They are great for bringing to work as well.” And Prepon has plenty of work on her plate. The fourth season of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black drops June 17, with Prepon returning as Alex Vause. “This is one of our best seasons. From the first episode, it’s a great ride. I think the fans will really love it.” Plus, she has the film adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ book The Girl on the Train coming out this fall, starring Emily Blunt and Justin Theroux. “I play Cathy, Rachel’s (Blunt’s) roommate and friend. Tate Taylor (The Help) directed it, and he’s amazing. The cast is fantastic. I think people will love it. We do the book justice.” This time, Prepon’s success on screen mirrors how she feels off screen, with a truer, more authentic sense of self, similar to the ingredients included in the plan. “The Stash Plan is about real food—real butter, real grassfed amazing meat, fresh vegetables. If it’s substantial and my body will recognize it, I eat it.” The Stash Plan is available in most bookstores and online. Visit lauraprepon.com for more information. your skin a youthful glow), and stretching exercises for flushing out toxins. “One of the biggest revelations was learning the importance of the lymphatic system. When there are many toxins in your body, the lymph gets stagnant and adds to the cascade of body problems.” The idea behind “stashing” is that you stash away foods, cooking only on Sundays and Wednesdays, so you’ll have meals prepared for the rest of the week. This plan works for single guys and gals on the go, as well as moms and dads. “This is how my mother always taught me to cook. Because of my food sensitivities and busy schedule, I always cook at home so I bring food to set. A stash in the fridge is great for families, too. They aren’t running through a drive-thru on the way home or calling Domino’s.” Not that takeout is forbidden. The great thing about the plan is that it works on an 80/20 schedule: 80 percent of the time you get to eat delicious, healthy foods like stuffed peppers and parcel-poached sea bass, while the rest of the time you get a break and can eat a cheeseburger with fries. And when you stash, you save money on food you would eat ordering out.

AUSTYN NIXON'S LEATHER PIECES ARE FIT FOR SLAYING DRAGONS BY INDIGO BALOCH PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN SERRA AND NICHOLAS HEWITT

As you’re getting settled in for season six of Game of Thrones, you may find it infiltrating every aspect of your life. If it starts affecting your wardrobe, however, we have you covered with a fashion statement you won’t regret. Wolves Leather is the brainchild and artwork of Austyn Nixon. Nixon got into leatherwork in 2011 when his brother began crafting swords and daggers. “He asked me if I wanted to make sheaths for them,” said Nixon. “I was looking for a new hobby, so I started looking into it. I did some research, purchased some tools, and made my first belt. I fell in love right there.” Since then, Nixon has developed a wide line of stunning pieces— including leashes and collars for dogs. “People love their companions and will go through a great deal for them. I wanted to bring something to the table that was special and would tell a story between a canine and his or her owner.” The rest of the Wolves Leather accessories range from belts to suspenders and more for people. Nixon’s next goal is to introduce handcrafted wallets into his line of products. His current creations are sourced from different leather suppliers all around the United States, though some materials—like beeswax— are ordered locally. “Buckleguy—where I order my hardware 22

from—specializes in high-quality hardware for the fashion trade. Springfield Leather Co. provides wonderful 10-11 Heavy Hermann Oak Leather, which is used for every product that I craft.” His pieces also have an incredible array of earthy hues, which he achieves through toning the leather with Fiebings professional oil dye. “For water resistance and polishing, I traditionally cover the product with warm beeswax mixed with oils. This prevents the leather from cracking and gives it a vintage look. All of this is applied by hand. It’s taken me over two years to achieve the look I wanted with the dye. Learning the process of traditional leather craft and having the eye for it takes a great amount of research and time.” If you’re looking for handcrafted, one-of-a-kind products to step up your style and have you looking like the next ruler of the Seven Kingdoms (or maybe just your own smaller kingdom), make sure to put Wolves Leather at the top of your list. You might even find a collar for your dire wolf. Visit wolvesleather.com for more information.

JET SET: UNDISCOVERED

LYON, FRANCE

BY INDIGO BALOCH

Paris may be France’s go-to city, but we have our hearts set on Lyon, as both a food and art destination! We’ve looked the city up and down, and our final verdict? We’re in love! 24

WHERE TO STAY COLLÈGE HÔTEL: If you’ve ever wanted to know what it would be like to live in a beautiful French boarding house, check out the Collège Hôtel, which is a school-themed hotel. “It is a reminder of our childhood and our adolescent dreams, dreams that we dreamt seated on our school benches as we stared at maps of the world,” says the website. While some areas are designed to look more classic, other spaces are strikingly modern. Here, you can get the best of both worlds. MAMA SHELTER: Mama Shelter is quite possibly the trendiest place you will ever stay. Everything from the rooms to the restaurant looks straight out of a design catalogue or an indie film (the dining area has inner tubes hanging from the ceiling!). Once you leave, you may even have trouble believing a place that cool truly exists in the real world. HÔTEL VAUBECOUR: If you’re looking for more traditional French-style lodging, got to Hôtel Vaubecour. The décor and atmosphere harken back to an era and place you’ve been longing for, whether you realize it or not. The rooms mix minimalist with regal in a way that will calm and satisfy. After a long day of running around Lyon, their spacious, comfy beds are the perfect place to rest.

WHERE TO EAT LE CANUT ET LES GONES: A staple in Lyon, Le Canut et Les Gones offers a warm, comfortable atmosphere paired with high-quality French cuisine. Picture sitting down in an old French grandmother’s cottage and being served a plate styled so strikingly it could be considered art. You don’t want to miss out on this. TETEDOIE: With a gorgeous view of the city, worthy of something you’d see in an art gallery, and food fit for the gods, Tetedoie provides the perfect opportunity for a big night out. If you’re looking to treat yourself one night, this is the place to go. LES TERRASSES DE LYON: For a charming lunch spot with sunny ambiance, check out Les Terrasses de Lyon. With its big windows, balconies, and outdoor seating, you’ll feel like you’re having a posh picnic. And if that somehow isn’t enough for you, keep in mind they’ve earned a Michelin star! FLAIR: Flair is exactly what you want from a French bistro. Its décor and plating are cutting edge to the point where your Instagram posts will leave your friends salivating and green with envy! And there’s no wrong choice here when it comes to their menu. No matter what you get, it’s guaranteed to be remarkable.

WHERE TO GO MUSÉE DES TISSUS ET DES ARTS DÉCORATIFS (MUSEUM OF TEXTILES AND DECORATIVE ARTS MUSEUM) : In the second arrondissement of Lyon, you’ll find the Musée des Tissus et des Arts décoratifs. Although it is technically two separate museums—the Musée des Tissus (Museum of Textiles) and the Musée des arts décoratifs (Decorative Arts Museum) —it is administered as one and can certainly hold your attention for hours, if not days. Overall, the Musée des Tissus et des Arts décoratifs houses one of the largest international collections of textiles. In particular, the Musée des Arts décoratifs includes furniture, drawings, jewelry, paintings, sculptures, and more. MUSÉES GALLO-ROMAINS (GALLO ROMAN MUSEUM OF LYON) : The Musées gallo-romains sits on the Gallo-Roman civilization in Lyon. Serving as a museum and archeological site, the museum houses original items from excavations and discoveries in the Rhône-Alpes region. While the idea of a historical museum may seem a bit stuffy, this site will leave you charmed and entranced by the beauty and magnitude of Roman art and architecture. PARC DE LA TETE D'OR (PARK OF THE GOLDEN HEAD) : A large urban park found in the sixth arrondissement, Parc de la Tete d'Or features a lake for boating, a small zoo at the center, horseback riding, a miniature train, and more. Whether you’re traveling with friends or your sweetheart, this is the perfect spot for a dreamy, summer picnic. With its history, food, art, and architecture, Lyon, France is one destination for foodies and artists alike. Visit http://www.en.lyon-france.com/ for more information. 27

FROM DUST TO CRUMB,

MEDITERRA BAKEHOUSE IS ON THE RISE WITH LATEST VENTURE BY HEATHER PENN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE AMBELIOTIS MCLEAN

Mediterra Bakehouse has been a mainstay in the Pittsburgh area for more than a decade. This family-run bakery started by Nick Ambeliotis has been turning out “rustic,” “artisan” breads long before the terms became foodie buzzwords. Mediterra’s breads and pastries are available to customers at restaurants, grocery stores, and coffee shops throughout the Pittsburgh area and beyond. “The Bakehouse delivers fresh breads to Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio multiple times a week and also operates a facility in Phoenix, Arizona,” said Nicole Ambeliotis McLean, manager 34

at Mediterra Bakehouse and daughter of Nick Ambeliotis. “We bake breads to be reminiscent of what our family grew up eating.” As a child in Greece, Nick Ambeliotis had the pleasure of eating freshly baked bread every day, made with the best possible ingredients available. This concept has become the catalyst for Mediterra Bakehouse’s exciting new venture: Working with a Washington, PA, farmer, who is planting wheat and heritage grains specifically for Mediterra Bakehouse’s breads and pastries. “Bread is the staff of life, right?” said Mediterra Bakehouse patriarch Nick Ambeliotis. “Becoming an estate bakehouse allows us to control the entire bread-making process from ‘dust to crumb,’ or ‘Farm, Mill, Bake’ as we call it.” Keeping in line with the family’s philosophy that eating off and of the land that surrounds you is the healthiest and most sustainable way to eat, these heritage grains grown right here in the Pittsburgh area will allow Mediterra Bakehouse to offer something truly unique to their customers—breads that have a Southwest Pennsylvania “terroir” (the French concept that loosely translates to “taste of place”). “Today, many hybrid wheat varieties have been genetically engineered and bred to withstand rot and herbicide medicine,” said Mr. Ambeliotis. “Growing our own ancient wheat organically will take us back to the time decades ago when 1-2,500 were intolerant to wheat instead of 1-100 who are today.” Using old sourdough techniques of slow fermentation with heritage and sprouting grains makes for easier digestion. Not only will these breads be native to this area, but they will be helping a local farmer as well— something that is extremely important to the Ambeliotis family.

“Leaving this industry better than how we found it is my goal."

With the excitement of the first heritage wheat harvest taking place this summer, Mediterra Bakehouse wants their customers to feel, as they slice into their breads, that they have a truly special product, like a loaf of bread their grandmother might have made. “Leaving this industry better than how we found it is my goal,” said Mr. Ambeliotis. Visit Mediterra Bakehouse at mediterrabakehouse.com. For your visual pleasure, be sure to follow Mediterra Bakehouse on Instagram at @mediterrabakehouse.

PASSION FLOWER

JEWELRY MADE FOR GREEN THUMBS— AND NECKS! BY LAUREN SHAFFER PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA DUMOUCHELLE

Out of superstition, most brides partake in the tradition of something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. But what bride wouldn’t want to add something whimsical, unique, and unforgettable? Susan McLeary of the Etsy store PassionflowerMade creates a unique blend of succulent plants to create her jewelry, for any wedding or special occasion, from earrings, necklaces, and tiaras to one of her more recent requests—a sash for the bride. “From my jewelry, I hope people capture the essence that anything beautiful is to be appreciated while it lasts,” said McLeary. After graduating from college, McLeary initially was set to pursue a career in physiology—although, as a hobby, she made earrings for friends. When one of her friends planning a wedding was unable to find a florist, McLeary stepped in and created the centerpieces and floral arrangements. This request ended up changing the course of her career. “From that moment on, I knew I had found my passion and soon started pursuing any workshop and certification I could find.” She even started practicing her talents on other friends’ nuptials. After one especially memorable workshop, she was asked to make pieces for photographers in California. 38 PHOTO BY SABIKA

" From my jewelry, I hope people capture the essence that anything beautiful is to be appreciated while it lasts."

“I knew I’d have to ship the arrangements, so they had to be sturdy, or as sturdy as live plants could be.” She chose the winning combination of succulents and jewelry, and the photos were so captivating that people started requesting pieces. In 2014, McLeary opened her Etsy shop, PassionflowerMade. But Buyer Beware: The jewelry is intended for big events—not to be worn to the office or on routine errands. “The creations are live, and some people don’t understand that they’re only meant for special occasions and short-term enjoyment.” Even though every precaution is taken to ensure their longevity, there are elements out of McLeary’s control. However, those that do understand the ideology can get extra pleasure out of the jewelry in a different way. “Some customers often prolong their enjoyment by planting the individual succulents and creating their own memory of the piece.” Do you have a special event in the near future? Consider wearing succulent jewelry from PassionflowerMade. Visit passionflowerevents.com. 39

NEW QUESTLOVE BOOK PULLS AT THE ROOTS OF CULINARY ART BY RAEANN MACNEIL

to,” he writes, and so the majority of chefs interviewed are white men. He hopes that in the future the industry will include more minorities. Including this explanation and his optimistic hopes may not fix the lack of diversity, but it ensures that unaware readers will come away from his book with a better understanding of the importance of diversity. Questlove brings his love of music and his newfound appreciation for food together at the book’s close, where he describes a meal served to him at the Modernist Cuisine lab in Seattle. Each dish in the 13-course meal gets its own song. While readers will probably never be able to experience the meal as Questlove did, this is his way of sharing it with the world. Pull up some music on your computer. Listen to this playlist. Look at the pictures of this incredible meal.

BOOK COVER IMAGE COURTESY OF DONOVAN PUBLIC RELATIONS

And experience it with me.

If you know the name “Questlove,” you probably don’t think of food. His career with The Roots? Yes. His role as a music producer and appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon? Sure. But the culinary world? Not so much.

After all, to quote Questlove himself, “Sharing in the experience with people is what food, culture, music, and art is all about.”

The prolific drummer has published two books related to music, including his memoir, but for his third book, he decided to do something different. Something to Food About: Exploring Creativity with Innovative Chefs is not your typical food book, as Questlove claims, and this is something he delivers on. It is not a book of recipes telling you what you should and should not be eating, nor is it a compilation of restaurants to visit before you die (though, that could, arguably, be the reader’s goal by the end). Instead, the book offers Questlove’s views on food as an art form, which is clear before you even open the book, as the author’s portrait on the front cover is in fruits and vegetables in the spirit of Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo. But Questlove hasn’t always viewed food this way. His fondness for food started after he watched the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi, in which Jiro Ono tries to perfect the art of creating sushi. This story resonated with Questlove, as he recognized the same drive in himself in the music industry. Writing and recording music isn’t a one-step process; there is trial and error, compromising and collaboration. And even after a song is recorded, mixed, and put out for the world to consume, the artist still finds ways to change it. Chefs do the same thing. They create art, their art is consumed, and they continue changing their art even after they have become successful. Ten successful chefs were interviewed by Questlove for his book, and as one would interview artists, he asks them about their history in this art and their inspiration to keep going. Why do they continue pushing the limits of their craft? Readers looking for a diverse set of chefs may be slightly disappointed, though. The author makes a point of mentioning the lack of diversity in the fine-dining world. “I didn’t want to artificially inflate the numbers of minority and female chefs I was talking

Something to Food About was released on April 12, 2016 and is available at most bookstores. Visit questlove.com for more information.

FOOD MOOD GIRL WANTS TO ABSOLVE THE WORLD OF ‘FOOD GUILT’ BY RAEANN MACNEIL, PHOTOS BY TELL ME PRESS AND SARAH VANTASSEL

“Food guilt” is a phrase you may not recognize, but a feeling you’re all too familiar with. It happens after you’ve eaten something, maybe a dessert or snack, and you start to feel guilty because you think it’s “bad” for you. Food Mood Girl Lindsey Smith learned first-hand the power behind the term. “I recognized how many colleagues of mine felt guilty about indulging in a treat they knew they shouldn’t have,” said the author and public speaker. “Or how many times someone would be eating next to me, find out I’m a health coach, and then apologize for what they were eating.” Smith set out to relieve these feelings of guilt by helping people listen to what their bodies are telling them. “Many times, if you are craving something, it’s because your body is seeking some sort of nutrient. Labels won’t be able to give you what your body really needs.” Her first book, Junk Foods and Junk Moods: Stop Craving and Start Living, came out in 2012. Since then, she’s released four books on other topics related to nutrition, including The Bliss Cleanse, Hear Me Roar, and Food Guilt No More. The books include recipes, meditations, and insight from Food Mood Girl herself. “Most of the time, I listen to my audience. Through speaking across the U.S. and hearing what my followers are saying

42

on social media, I try to meet them where they are and tackle the real issues they are dealing with that I, too, have usually struggled with. And sometimes, an idea just hits me and I can’t stop until I get it out into the world.”

" When you love yourself, your relationships flourish and you no longer seek comfort in calories."

Smith’s blog is all about unique health journeys where she strives to offer commentary and advice to her audience. “I like to be real, call things out, and just be myself. I try to get into the depths of what people are thinking but aren’t talking about, and try to make a universal point to the subject matter.” By doing so, she has created an online presence that is all about self-positivity, one that encourages readers to stop feeling bad about their shortcomings. Maybe you’re not where you want to be on your health journey, but her positivity will inspire you to continue by way of self-love, not self-hate.

“Self-love is one of the most nutrient-dense vitamins we have available to us. When you truly love yourself, you want to feed your body healthy foods and take care of it. When you love yourself, your relationships flourish and you no longer seek comfort in calories. When you truly cultivate self-love, you will always be full.” That’s advice we’ll take seconds of. Sincerely Caroline BELIEVES WE ALL CAN BE GLUTEN-FREE (OR NOT!) BY RAEANN MACNEIL, PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAROLINE SHANNON-KARASIK AND LUKE SHANNON

In today’s world, it’s not hard to find information on cutting gluten out of your diet. Whether you’ve been diagnosed with Celiac disease or just want to see what changing your diet will do for your body, there are a ton of resources out there to help. One of those resources is Caroline Shannon-Karasik—author, health coach, blogger, and mother who writes about her gluten-free experiences. “I was diagnosed right before a gluten-free lifestyle became a household topic,” said Shannon-Karasik. “I was so desperate for answers that I just dove in head first and got to work in the kitchen. It actually expanded my food repertoire because it required me to explore new ingredients in order to create dishes that tasted good.” 44

But the lifestyle Shannon-Karasik shares with her readers is not limited to gluten-free eating. She writes on a variety of topics, including motherhood, fitness, exercise, and beauty. “My goal is to show people that being gluten-free is just one aspect of my life. I do not meet people and say, ‘Hi, I'm Caroline. I'm gluten-free.’ My site incorporates all of the aspects that make up this big, beautiful, gluten-free life I lead, so that people can find their niche, too.” According to Shannon-Karasik, those new to the transition should start small, cutting out obvious things, like bread, pasta, baked goods, and beer.

“Once you see an improvement (and you will!), then I would suggest getting into the nitty-gritty of things. Easing into it can help the change feel less abrupt.” However, if your reason for cutting out gluten is a Celiac disease diagnosis, ShannonKarasik says to make the necessary changes immediately. “If you leave an issue like Celiac disease untreated, then you're headed down a road where you can develop a host of other health problems, including osteoporosis, anemia, Type 1 diabetes, and even cancer.” Her own Celiac diagnosis was not immediate; she quite literally had to trust her gut and push for answers. But she reminds her readers that they are their best advocates, just as she had to be for herself. “Whether it's about your health or goals, you know you best.” Now, she shares her story and experiences on her blog, where she hopes to inspire her readers, but not tell them what to do. “We live in a world where the recurring message is that there is only one right way to do everything, and I just never want my readers to feel that way when they visit my site.” She even calls her readers cupcakes, because “everyone needs to be hugged and told they are sweet as sugar every now and then.” And to Shannon-Karasik, all cupcakes of all ingredients are created equal. HELPS WOMEN CRACK THE STYLE CODE OF THEIR PERSONAL BRAND BY STACY SKIAVO

of Mitsubishi Electric. And by 37, she had launched a $40 million Internet company. “In 2004, I decided to merge my product and corporate branding experience with my MBA and fashion degree and launch a second career,” said Brandegee. “One that leveraged my expertise in personal style to empower women executives.” She’s curated hundreds of wardrobes since then. Clients at Worth New York Showroom will experience a private and personalized style and wardrobing consultation with expert guidance to help them achieve the image they’ve been looking for, along with recommendations to fit their personality and purpose. Bear begins by understanding your objectives. Whether you’re wanting to update your look for a new promotion, an upcoming event or trip, or you just lost a size or two and need a wardrobe refresh, Bear and her team make recommendations on the colors, silhouettes, and styles that will be most flattering and will suit your life goals. “The outcome is that we create your wardrobe capsule that takes you from day to evening, from weekday to weekend, feeling confident, comfortable, and appropriate.” When considering your wardrobe, Bear provides these helpful fashion tips:

• Be authentic in your choices. • Don’t dress to please someone else or to fit in.

As style strategist and owner of Worth New York Showroom, Bear Brandegee has experienced impressive success in her career—and looked great while doing it. At a young age, Bear was interested in the fashion branding she saw in magazines and was inspired by her first fashion icon—her mother. While her mother was building a technical writing business in the ‘60s, Bear studied her “power look.” After college, Bear consciously created a wardrobe to mirror the most successful women in the marketing field. By the time she was 30, Brandegee held the position of vice president at one of the largest PR firms in the world. By 32, she had climbed the ranks to speechwriter and media relations advisor to the Chairman

• Find your style personality and stick with it as the foundation of your wardrobe. If you’re a classic, then build your wardrobe with classic pieces. You can then add a twist with a single piece, shoes, or a fabulous accessory that reflects another side of you, be it the artistic, biker chic, or masculine. This pairing creates interest! • Get a three-way mirror installed in your dressing area, and actually take one minute to give yourself a true once-over before you declare yourself ready to meet the world. • Finally, put the focus on the parts of you that you love best and stop criticizing the rest! The more you play up your assets and feel good about yourself, the better you’ll look and the better you will feel. To make a change, or gain the confidence you have been searching for, make an appointment with Brandegee by calling (412) 877-0464 or email her at wardrobe@bearbrandegee.com.

WA N T T O S T A R T A FA S H I O N B U S I N E S S ?

Gretchen Harnick COULD BE THE NEEDLE FOR YOUR THREADS BY MEGAN MCLACHLAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY MILES, @PHOTOGRAPHYBYMILES ON INSTAGRAM

Just as style and trends continue to change, so do the marketing methods behind them. And that’s what spurred digital marketing consultant and academic Gretchen Harnick to launch Pattern to Plan, a global online incubator to help creatives build their fashion startups. “Students would reach out to me a few years after graduating, asking for help building their businesses,” said Harnick. “Most of my students were international so the mentoring would take place online. I knew I needed to record these conversations and let others learn from this knowledge as well.” Under Harnick’s guidance, budding business men and women uncover the voice of their brand, utilize social media strategies, and cultivate an online community of fans and supporters—strategies she knows all too well. “Before getting into teaching, I had my own showroom where I represented emerging designers, as well as my own clothing boutique. So I have the background and love of being a small business owner.” Harnick’s resume includes four years as Department Director of Fashion & Retail Management at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh from 2005 to 2009, before heading to New York to become an Associate Professor and Coordinator at Parsons School of Design for six years. But in the summer of 2015, she decided to pursue a new direction in her career and move to Saint-Tropez, France.

52

“I really was seeking a better work/life balance, as life in New York is all about work. I had been coming to the South of France for six summers, so I was very much in love with the climate, food, and the people.” The freedom of her job allows her to continue to teach fashion online for Parsons in Retail Buying and Fashion Entrepreneurship. “It’s incredible to work with students in Hong Kong, Lima, Peru, New York, and Paris at the same time. The strict schedule takes a lot of discipline on their part, but they are so dedicated.” And if anything, being immersed in one of the most fashion-forward areas in the world allows her to partake in events like Fashion Week in Paris, which only adds to her counseling on all things couture. “Fashion in France is much more classic than in the U.S. People invest in a few good items, they buy name brands, and look so effortlessly chic. But they do love American trends.” So what does it really take to start a fashion business? “To start one is easy, but to remain in it is the difficult part. This takes patience, dedication, and constant drive. I find the best entrepreneurs always reinvent their business based on consumer demands and their own creativity. So, willing to be creative with how you build and evolve your business can be a key indicator for long-term success.” If her years of industry experience are any indication, it’s evident that Harnick is very good at taking her own advice. For more information on Gretchen Harnick and her Pattern to Plan business, visit gretchenharnick.com and patterntoplan.com.

PITTSBURGH STUDENT BOWLS OVER READERS

with vegan blog

BY JESSECA MUSLIN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAITLIN SHOEMAKER

Two years ago, Caitlin Shoemaker started her Instagram @frommybowl during a period in her life when she was feeling lethargic and wanted to get healthy. She thought that forcing herself to post pictures of her food would motivate her to eat better. “When I first started it, it was honestly just to hold myself accountable,” Shoemaker said with a laugh. Soon, she realized she could combine her enjoyment for photography, food, and cooking on her page, and it spiraled from there. Shoemaker’s Instagram account currently has more than 59,000 followers. She also has a YouTube channel with more than 4,500 subscribers, an eBook, and a blog, frommybowl.blogspot.com, where she posts recipes. 54

Blogger: Caitlin Shoemaker Website: frommybowl.blogspot.com Instagram: @frommybowl Location: Pittsburgh, PA

“As I got more and more followers, I realized I actually had the opportunity to inspire and encourage people to eat healthier and be a positive role model.” When Shoemaker decided to live a vegan lifestyle, it wasn’t a new decision. She had already been one before. In fact, her family had been vegan until she was in second grade, before they decided to become vegetarian instead. But last summer, after seeing vegan bloggers post beautiful food images on Instagram, the Pittsburgh college student decided to delve deeper into veganism before becoming one again. "I decided to look into it in more depth, including the ethical reasons behind it. I did some research, watched a few documentaries, and realized that this was obviously the right decision for me." Her college lifestyle plays a large role in the food she makes and the recipes she follows. While she gets inspiration from other Instagrammers and YouTubers, what she ends up eating often depends on what she already has in her kitchen or what she can get on sale at the grocery store. “I want people to know that I’m a college student, too. I have homework, I go to the gym, I have a job, and it’s totally possible to do with any lifestyle.” Even though, she admits, that there are some weeks when she’s busy with school and is eating beans, rice, and spinach because that’s all she has time to cook (but it’s still healthy!). Caitlin’s goal is to always be open and honest with her followers because she knows that social media can portray life as glamorous when it really is not. She hopes to encourage others to live healthier lives, even if that does not mean being totally vegan. “Ultimately I am advocating a vegan lifestyle, but I understand that it’s a very big transition for some people,” she said. At the very least, she hopes her followers will incorporate more plant-based meals or fruits and vegetables into their diets, eat healthier, and think more consciously about their food choices and the decisions they’re making in general. Visit Caitlin's blog at www.frommybowl.blogspot.com and follow her on Instagram at @frommybowl. 55

5 Dope Style Tips from Keep Pittsburgh Dope's Chancelor Humphrey BY MEGAN BROWN, PHOTO BY CODY BAKER (@TEHBAKERY) AND CHANCELOR HUMPHREY

You have to admit it: Pittsburgh is pretty dope. Someone helping share that on social media is Chancelor Humphrey, creator of the successful Keep Pittsburgh Dope Instagram account. Humphrey started out with a lifestyle website, Pittsburgh Dope, a few years ago. He would contact local artists and boutiques in the city and do write-ups along with photos. After having photographers bail on him, he decided to pick up the camera and start shooting street style around the city. Since Pittsburgh has been in the news for its cultural growth and revitalization lately, Humphrey is happy to be a part of this new identity. “Now being two years in, it’s great to see how unified our creatives are getting,” Humphrey said. “They aren’t being so timid or afraid of what they’re doing creatively and will ask each other for help.”

1. Be yourself.

For Pittsburgh fashion, Humphrey has seen a particular trend for people ages 19 to 30: the cozy look. “They wear a lot of tailored crewnecks and hoodies, but they still look good.”

Find out what your look is and what you feel comfortable in.

So from all of his photographs and observations, what does he suggest when it comes to fashion? Here are Chancelor Humphrey’s 5 Dope Style Tips:

Look to different people, even your friends, to pick and choose to find your style identity.

2. Find inspiration. 3. Find a staple piece. It should be something that you wear on the regular, where your style can be identified by one piece. So if it's on someone else, it reminds people of you.

4. Don’t be afraid to accessorize, especially men. There are a lot of options, so don’t be afraid. Shopping local can help you accessorize, too, including Pittsburgh’s own Studebaker Metals.

5. Step out. Bring it all together and own it. There’s no age limit on style; it may take minutes or years to find your own personal form.

Now that you have these style tips from one of Pittsburgh’s thriving creators, be sure to follow his Instagram @KeepPittsburghDope. 63

PITTSBURGH BAND NEVADA COLOR HOPES

YOU ENJOY THE HUE BY LAUREN SHAFFER, PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY KOVACIC

Nevada Color chose their name by selecting the word “color” first. To them, the word represented youthfulness and nostalgia, like their music, since creating a fun vibe is the goal every time they walk on stage. For the finishing touch on their band name, they decided to go with Nevada for its ambiguous meaning. “Some individuals imagine the desert, while others envision Las Vegas,” explained guitarist Max Kovalchuk. “Because each of these places has a distinct color scheme, we're leaving Nevada Color open to interpretation.” The band got its start when Kovalchuk and bassist Chris Cichra decided to alter their latest music project from folk pop to Indie rock, picking up fellow Point Park students Quinn Wirth (lead vocals) and Adam Valen (guitarist) before adding Jeremy Westhead (drummer). Soon, their music was being included in the highlight tapes for the Pirates and Penguins, and they were booking performances for Pittsburgh’s Light 64

Up Night, Picklesburgh, and Thrival Festival. But to date, opening for the Cold War Kids at Stage AE was the most surreal moment for the band, as each of the members had worked at the venue in various positions at some point. “To be walking around on the other side of things was amazing,” mused Wirth. “I had cleaned the dressing room backstage, and now I was using it.” Having signed recently with a record label, the band is currently going through one of its toughest periods and is stepping back from actively touring to write and record more. The major pressure comes from themselves and the standards they place on what they want to create for their fans. “Getting the music right is most important to us right now,” said Kovalchuk. “Our label has given us a creative freedom that most artists don’t get.” The group appreciates the freedom of the new label and cannot wait to start performing the new songs for their loyal fan base. For their upcoming shows, they want to show their appreciation to their fans by offering them a special USB bracelet, loaded with three songs. When fans come to future shows with the wristband, they can upload new songs. Whether Nevada Color makes you think of the colors of the desert or Las Vegas nightlife, one thing’s for sure: The future looks bright for this band. Listen to the band’s music at http://nevadacolor.bandcamp.com/ and stay connected with them on Facebook, Twitter (@nevadacolor), and Instagram (@nevadacolormusic).

STARRY NIGHTS AHEAD ON

ALLA FAMIGLIA'S FRESCO PATIO BY NICHOLAS MANNING, PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALYSSA ANDRESS

Ever since Dean Martin ingeniously sang the words moon, pizza pie, and amore in the same song lyric, countless romantics have wooed their loved ones underneath the moon’s radiant glow in search of true love (and great Italian food, too). Whether you’re looking for a date beneath the stars, or simply exquisite Italian cuisine, the Fresco Patio at Pittsburgh’s Alla Famiglia Italian Cookery is the best place to wine, dine, and socialize this summer season. The Fresco Patio provides a comfortable, outdoor experience accompanied by an optimal view of the St. John Vianney Parish tower. According to executive chef Jonathan Vlasic, the success of his restaurant can be attributed to more than just the food that is served. “It’s our personality and culture. I get the feeling that when our guests dine here, they are not here just to eat and drink—but also to spend time with us,” said Vlasic. For Vlasic—who has prepared and plated the dishes at Alla Famiglia for the last 11 years—creating an enjoyable and satisfying guest experience is his top priority. Each of his meals is crafted from scratch and derived from the simplest ingredients. Vlasic’s savory creations not only mirror a deep family history of cooking, but also his training at the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts. After serving countless guests with food, drink, and friendship, Vlasic said, “My favorite words are: ‘This is the best meal I’ve ever had!’”

66 66

He and his staff guarantee an experience that is unique and deliciously indulgent. The Fresco Patio at Alla Famiglia is only one of the restaurant’s expansion projects that guests can experience. In the near future, Alla Famiglia will feature an addition that will create the ideal environment for occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, showers, and even small weddings. Visit Alla Famiglia at 804 E. Warrington Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15210 and online at allafamiglia.com.

MANIAC advice Develop Staple/Base Items Lucky for the carnivore, a majority of vegetarian meals can be turned into carnivorous ones simply by cooking the meat separately and/ or making two pots/pans/etc., of the same thing—one without meat and one with. So when considering recipes or grocery shopping, have a staple or base set of items you would typically use. If a carnivore finds a meal that includes meat, the vegetarian will most likely be able to come up with an aspect of that meal that can be vegetarian. Therefore, having a list of staple or base items will assist in choosing meals and allow you to be creative because you have a foundation to work from. Examples include meals that use beef stock could be replaced with vegetable stock. Soups, stews, curry, pasta, and rice dishes are all great options for both the vegetarian and the carnivore.

WHEN FOOD OPPOSITES ATTRACT

Establish a Food Storage Location Another topic of conversation should be addressing where the carnivorous food will be stored in the fridge, freezer, or pantry. A piece of advice: Store the meat on the bottom shelf of the fridge, as it’s a good place to store meat. If the vegetarian prefers the meat to be stored elsewhere, there's always the semi-expensive option to purchase a mini-fridge.

Food brings people together. And for couples, food even brings about activities to do together: researching recipes, shopping, going to new restaurants, or trying new types of cuisine. When it comes to vegetarians versus carnivores, the actual meal may be where controversy occurs. But a majority of vegetarian meals can be turned into carnivorous ones, which makes it easier when choosing a dish to create.

Try New Restaurants This discussion can be pretty fun. Have you been looking for new, different foods to eat? A majority of restaurants, excluding meat-only ones, will have vegetarian options. There may be times when the vegetarian has to compromise on the restaurant and make their meal out of appetizers, side dishes, or salads. Restaurant websites often have menus, and it would be best to look at them prior to trying out a restaurant or calling ahead to see if the restaurant has the ability to make a vegetarian meal.

In order to make different food choices enticing for both parties, here are 6 tips for dating a carnivore or vegetarian when you’re not one. Keep an Open Mind Dating someone with different tastes always works best if you’re open to the possibility that you will like some of his or her likes. When it comes to a vegetarian and carnivore being together, it’s often more the carnivore that needs to keep an open mind. However, it does not mean that the vegetarian gets to call all of the shots. There are meatbased meals that can be reconfigured into vegetarian ones. Compromise In every relationship, there's always compromise. In relation to vegetarians and carnivores, it comes down to several factors. If meals are going to be eaten together, they should be mutually decided upon by both parties. A lot of this has to do with comfort levels between the vegetarian and carnivore. When shopping for food or making lists, talk about who is going to buy what and the comfort level. A compromise regarding the cooking is also helpful because vegetarians may not want to cook the meat portion of the meal. One other conversation to have is about the use of carnivorous food on plates, utensils, cooking equipment, etc. Find a compromise that works for both, especially regarding cleaning/sanitizing such items. There's always the option to buy a second set. Communication is definitely key in a relationship, and this is a good example of using those skills.

Partner Rules: Respect Each Other Partner rules are agreed-upon ways of relating to one another on this topic. It’s really important that both the vegetarian and carnivore don’t push their opinions, discouraging info/facts, and/or videos. Courtesy to each other’s point of view is key, as it’s a sign of respect. The vegetarian should not make the carnivore feel guilty about eating meat. Pay attention to touchy topics, as some people can be more sensitive. It is not up to either party to convince the other that their preference is better. There needs to be a mutual understanding that each person has the right to choose their food preferences. Opposites attract and the same can be said when it comes to vegetarians and carnivores. They truly can live in perfect harmony. You just have to follow the right recipe.

SALON 304 CELEBRATES TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

WITH POP-UP SHOP BY MEGAN MCLACHLAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALYSSA ANDRESS

As far as anniversaries go, traditionally, the second-year gift is cotton. But at Salon 304 in McMurray, it’s community. “This year, I decided to incorporate other small businesses to create some fun for our clients,” said Nicole Walden, Salon 304 owner and stylist. On Saturday, April 9, Salon 304 celebrated two years in business with a pop-up shop featuring Fascino Boutique in Mt. Washington, which included clothes and accessories for purchase. Clients also got to enjoy snacks and mimosas during their visit, so even though it was Salon 304’s birthday, the party was all about the customers who were treated like royalty.

“ This year, I decided to incorporate other small businesses to create some fun for our clients. ” As far as Salon 304’s “real” birthday, it’s April 15. But even though anniversaries are usually observed over the course of one day, Salon 304 called their two-year anniversary a week-long celebration. “We also offered a sale on retail products, and anyone who stopped in that day was entered into a drawing to win a giveaway basket of hair goodies.” A week later, on Saturday, April 16, a consultant from Keep Collectives jewelry came into the salon to show off baubles for purchase. “Clients were able to shop and create their own jewelry,” said Walden. “We were able to run the same product sale and giveaway as we did on the previous Saturday.” Walden may be commemorating two years with Salon 304, but the licensed cosmetologist has been in the business for more than a decade, with stops in Wheeling and Columbus. In Ohio’s capital, she received extensive training by a reputable color educator for Goldwell, USA, styling company and became adept in color theory and color techniques. She went on to style hair for runway shows for Express and Saks Fifth Ave. Eventually, Walden moved to Pittsburgh to be closer to her family, and in April 2014, she opened Salon 304 with the mission to provide exceptional quality services, while promoting healthy hair and confident clients. At Salon 304, birthdays and anniversaries aren’t all about looking in the mirror, but about bringing other local businesses into the mix and pampering customers with treats as they come through the door. Good karma for anniversary number three. Stop in to Salon 304 at 3150 Washington Road, Suite 200, McMurray, PA or visit www.salon304.net. 73

On the move? New to town, or just a new neighborhood? If you haven’t tried transit before maybe now is the time. Port Authority has convenient and frequent service to and from the urban areas of Pittsburgh. East Liberty is the heart of the East End’s transit service. Many Port Authority bus routes use the East Busway to bypass local traffic including the P1 and P3 from East Liberty’s busway station which offer quick rides to Downtown and Oakland. Various other routes have stops on Penn Ave. and serve just about anywhere in the East End of the city. Living Downtown? You CAN get anywhere from here. You can catch a bus or T to almost anywhere in Allegheny County. Groceries in the Strip District, take the 88. For all the flavor of Lawrenceville the 91 works. Nearly all of Port Authority's 100 routes travel in and out of Downtown. For more neighborhoods go to onthemove.portauthority.org and make this town your own.
