THEY’VE BEEN CALLED A BLACK METAL AND PUNK ROCK BUT AT THEIR HEARTS NORWEGIAN BERSERKERS KVELERTAK ARE THE LIVING, FIREBREATHING INCARNATION OF ROCK AND ROLL. SINCE THEIR FORMATION IN 2006, THEY’VE BUILT A DIE-HARD FAN-BASE HUNGRY FOR THEIR UTTERLY FEROCIOUS LIVE SHOWS AND THEY HAVE RECEIVED COUNTLESS CRITICAL ACCLAIM WITH KERRANG! CALLING THEM “THE MOST EXCITING NEW BAND ON THE PLANET.” PRODUCED BY CONVERGE’S KURT BALLOU, THEIR SECOND ALBUM MEIR (WHICH MEANS “MORE” IN ENGLISH) IS JUST THE TICKET FOR THOSE BORED OF STANDARD MEAT AND POTATOES METAL. BASSIST MARVIN NYGAARD TRANSLATES THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF METAL FOR MANIACS . On the new album MEIR: “This one, is stepping away from Nordic mythology (explored on their self-titled debut). He (vocalist - Erlend Hjelvik) is doing something more dark, darker lyrics, more personal. It has nothing to do with Vikings. It’s more his view on how the world is. “ On the subject of singling in English rather than Norwegian: “People have mentioned it to us that we should do it. But no pressure we just want to do what we do. It feels more natural for us. It feels unnatural to sing it in English.”
On the epic Meir cover art: “John (Dyer Baizley – artist and singer/guitarist for Baroness) basically made our first cover and he made this one too. This one is supposed to have more of a dark theme than the other one, so it’s the same but not the same.” On the first video from the album Bruane Brenn: “It was supposed to be us as kids. We always had a dream of not necessarily being a huge band, but just going on the road and having fun. It’s more of a party song, like a working class song. We all used to have shitty jobs before this. And every time we had to do a tour or play a show, we almost had to quit our jobs and then get them back when we got home. This song is more about just, burning all of our bridges being on the road, and never going back to work.” On other bands they dig: “We all listen to different kinds of bands. We like Mastodon… all of us like The Bronx. We haven’t toured with them yet. We did sideshows with Mastodon. We did 4 or 5 sideshows with them (including Australia for Soundwave in 2012). That was sick.” Marvin Nygaard, what makes you a Maniac?: “Just playing music. I’m definitely passionate about what I’m doing right now. And I have a family - I just had a kid so I’m pretty passionate about him.”

FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE MOST CONSISTENT AND CONSTANTLY EVOLVING ARTISTS TO BLOOM FROM THE BRITISH-BRED HARDCORE SCENE. EMERGING FROM BRIDGEND, WALES IN 2001, FFAF HAVE REMAINED TRUE TO THEIR ROOTS WITH CONDUIT WHICH MARKS THE BAND’S SIXTH OFFICIAL RELEASE. VOCALIST MATT DAVIES SHARES WITH MANIACS , HIS THOUGHTS ON TRAVELLING, PULLING DOUBLE VOCAL DUTIES SINCE THE DEPARTURE OF DRUMMER/BACKING VOCALIST RYAN RICHARDS AND WHAT AUSTRALIAN BANDS HAVE CAUGHT HIS EAR LATELY. On the meaning behind the title Conduit?: “We thought of a number of names or ideas for titles. It’s about sharing the idea of musical passion, intensity, integrity. Coming from a hardcore background like we come from and being true to that, which makes sense to all of us really.” On taking over screaming duties since Ryan left the band: “The new stuff, it’s all me you know and my interpretation, my aggressive output and I just kind of do what I do, I’m not trying to replicate Ryan, I just throw myself around and play. I’m not trying to be perfect, I’m not trying to sing everything like it is on the record. You just kind of get into and just kind of explode.” On the recent tour of Australia: “Travel has a massive influence on me in terms of what I’m doing in my life. It’s all about the release and I look forward to coming back to play in Australia. I think the current life, the current drive and energy of the band is going to be a surprise to a lot of people as well.”
On what FFAF like to do during down time: “We’re not rock stars, we don’t have elaborate ways of living or anything like that. I do my laundry, I clean the bathroom, tidy my bedroom, I play video games. I’m a big photography nerd so I go out and take lots of photographs when we travel. We come from a very blue-collar working-class background, we’ve never been a band doing the whole rock’n’roll lifestyle thing.” On Australian bands FFAF are digging: “I’ve just discovered an Australian band called Anchors who are pretty badass and obviously we’re all as a band big fans of 50 Lions and Break Even and bands like that. I’ve been listening to those bands a lot recently.” Matt Davies, what makes you a Maniac?: “I’m a maniac for vinyl. I go fucking mad for vinyl. Literally everywhere we go I have to fucking hunt down a record store. I’m a vinyl fiend, junkie, whatever you want to call it. I just love the format, I just think it’s insane how badass of a format for listening to music it is. I really go full pelt into that.”

STONE SOUR HAVE COME A LONG WAY SINCE THEIR EARLY DAYS AS STRAIGHT FORWARD HARDROCK BAND AND OFFSHOOT FOR KEY MEMBERS OF SLIPKNOT. OVER THE SPAN OF JUST FOUR STUDIO RELEASES, STONE SOUR HAVE BECOME MASTERS OF THEIR OWN CONCEPTUAL UNIVERSE WITH THEIR MOST RECENT - HOUSE OF GOLD AND BONES - REQUIRING TWO FULL ALBUMS AND A SERIES OF COMIC BOOKS TO COVER IT’S PROLIFIC AND COMPELLING STORY. SUCH A COMPLEX UNDERTAKING WOULD BE A GAMBLE FOR ANY ARTIST, BUT LUCKILY STONE SOUR FANS ARE IN GOOD HANDS AS FRONTMAN COREY TAYLOR IS EVER THE ENIGMATIC WEAVER OF TALES NOT TO MENTION PERFORMER OF KILLER TUNES. MANIACS GETS THE LOW DOWN FROM THE MAN HIMSELF – WHAT WE CAN PRY FROM HIM THAT IS – AS WELL AS HIS THOUGHTS ON THE EXTENSION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL MEDIUM. “It’s a two-parter” Taylor explains simply of album number four as he takes time out in between sets backstage at the recent Soundwave festival. “House of Gold & Bones – Part 1 came out in October, House of Gold & Bones – Part 2 is April and it’s a whole big thing, it’s a double concept album. You want the story, go buy it! I’m not going to give you any free press and there’s a comic book out as well so a lot of good things. GO BUY IT!”
Sound advice really as there’s no other way to truly explore the ‘House’ and its many secrets. From the cover art to to the videos that accompany key tracks like ‘Absolute Zero’ (from Pt 1) and ‘Do Me A Favour’ (from Pt 2), it’s at unveils the struggle the main character – Zero/The Human - finds himself faced with as his decisions and actions decide if he wakes from the dreamstate in which he suddenly finds himself. There are other characters too, mirroring urges buried deep within his psyche. The recent edition of the House Of Gold And Bones comic books also help to add depth and give further colour to the project. They are not easy to come by but well-worth hunting down. Indeed, comic books springing to life in other mediums are a popular concept of late. When asked what makes him a Maniac, Taylor speaks succinctly on the subject. “What makes me a Maniac? People who talk about comic book movies who have NO idea what the hell they’re talking about drive me NUTS! You thought Watchmen was a bad movie? Are you out of your goddamn mind?! ARGHH! I love comic book movies. They’re awesome, when they’re done well. When they’re not done well you get stuff like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which was a piece of crap! But when they’re done well like The Avengers they’re very, very, very awesome, so I look forward to all the stuff that Marvel is doing. D.C hit or miss, but yeah Marvel has really got it dialed in right now.”

FROM: Austin, Texas, USA FORMED: 2012 FOR FANS OF: Distrubed, Dope, Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park, Stone Sour, Godsmack, Filter CURRENT LINE UP: DAVID DRAIMAN - VOCALS VIRUS - GUITAR WILL HUNT – DRUMS Experimentation remains the best catalyst for progression. Rather than sticking to any pre-existing blueprints or conventions, modern hard rock icon David Draiman of Disturbed constructed Device from strands of hard rock, industrial, and electronica. As a result, Device’s self-titled debut album is a focused, fierce, and fiery new machine.
And it seems Draiman’s vision has already made an impact with Device debuting at #26 on the ARIA chart despite being still relatively underground. “It’s not metal” say Draiman of the project. “It’s got a dark electronic vibe. At the same time, these are big, anthemic, and intensely melodic songs. It’s futuristic rock.” Device also feature a number of notable guest collaborators including : Geezer Butler, Glenn Hughes, Lzzy Hale, M.Shadows, Serj Tankian and Tom Morello. With the switch turned on, the next chapter commences now. WEB: deviceband.com

DIFFERENT POINTS IN HISTORY CREATE THEIR OWN LEGENDS AND FOR METALCORE IT WAS IN 2009 WHEN KILLSWITCH ENGAGE USHERED IN A NEW ERA WITH THE RELEASE OF ALIVE OR JUST BREATHING. AT THE HELM, WAS JESSE LEACH DELIVERING A WAR-CRY THAT WOULD BE REMEMBERED LONG AFTER HE PREMATURELY DEPARTED FOR AN EXTENDED LEAVE OF ABSENCE. IN THE ENGINE ROOM, DRIVING AND SHAPING WHAT THE BAND WAS GUITARIST/ PRODUCER ADAM D, HIS UNWAVERING VISION FINALLY DRAWING LEACH BACK INTO THE FOLD FOR THEIR SIXTH STUDIO ALBUM DISARM THE DESCENT. JESSE AND ADAM SPOKE TO MANIACS BACKSTAGE AT SOUNDWAVE 2013. “Well hello there, my name’s Adam…. ….And I am Jesse. We’re in the band “Killswitch Engage”! It seems simple enough but those words hold great meaning for KSE loyalists! When the band took the stage at Soundwave this year, it was a raucous homecoming of sorts for Leach, made all the more poignant by the fact it is the first time the original line up has played in Australia. The shows were in support of new album Disarm the Descent, a collaborative team effort from the crushing tunes right down to its mysterious cover art. Jesse: “Mike D (bass) actually came up with the design initially, which was a woman with a veil over her looking creepy. So about a week after I joined the band he emailed me with the idea and actually the title which was originally Disarming the Descent. I actually took some photos of myself posing how I thought the women should look and it actually made the
grade so the photo you see is from a photo I took of myself doing that gesture!” Adam: “Along with some weird dick pics!” Jesse: “Yeah, of course.. That’s odd that you mention that, Adam never talks about dicks!” Adam: “We didn’t think that was a good idea for the cover though, a little too ‘riskay’.” And that’s pretty much how a conversation with KSE goes. They take the music seriously, but not themselves. Even still, there are a couple of other things they are consider vital! Adam: “What makes us Maniacs… Like what are we crazy about? I’m pretty obsessive about several things. Music, obviously. Beer, like insane beer. Food, I love hot and spicy food. Hot sauces, I have a huge collection of hot sauces in my house it’s strange. I think that pretty much sums up my personality right there.” Jesse: “Yeah, I’m really crazy, I’m a Maniac. I love to read books. I’m currently reading a book called “Please Kill Me”. It’s the oral history of Punk rock in New York City. So yeah books dude, I’m a Maniac for books! So crazy! I don’t even know what to do, like you can’t trust me, you never know what I’m going to do, I might snap at any second and start reading a book, watch out.”

MALEVOLENT KINGS OF BRITISH METAL CRADLE OF FILTH HAVE BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE EXTREME MUSIC SCENE FOR THE LAST TWO DECADES. THE DELICIOUSLY DARK TALES OF THE MACABRE PROBE THE SHADOWS AND RECESSES OF THE SOUL LIKE NO OTHER AND THEIR VISCERAL IMAGERY SET THE ALCOVES OF IMAGINATION AFIRE. THEIR TENTH ALBUM THE MANICORE AND OTHER HORRORS IS AS WICKED AS EVER. DURING THEIR AUSTRALIAN TOUR GUITARIST PAUL ALLENDER WHISPERED EVIL THOUGHTS EXCLUSIVELY TO MANIACS . On Manticore bringing back the punk: “I kind of wanted to dirty the whole thing up again. That’s where the true roots of the band come from. I think this (album) is a new turning point for us, I really do. Thornography was different but it was still nice if you know what I mean? This one you can’t really call it nice because it’s really dirty and it’s got the whole Punk attitude to it. Me and Martin (Skaroupka - drums) played and recorded together live, which gives it that organic feel.” On Manicore being the definitive Cradle sound: “I absolutely love it, personally. We’re all buzzing of this album like we were when we first did Principle Made Flesh. We’re all like really, really into this, and it’s definitely our sound. We did the whole ‘symphonic’ thing and Dimmu Borgir are doing that so it’s pointless
two bands doing exactly the same type of music. There are people saying why didn’t you do this again, we don’t want to follow people. We just want to do our own stuff.” On the Cradle album ‘concepts’: “They’re all based on individual characters. The only resemblance with each album is the dark art and that sort of stuff. But no, there’s not a ‘Cradle of Filth’ universe, they’re all different stories. The music on every single album is done exactly the same. The only difference when you have a concept is the lyrics have to be attacked differently and the artwork has to be attacked differently so it follows suit and it all makes sense. The music is done first, you see, and then Dan puts his lyrics to the music so it doesn’t really affect the music at all. So the music is written exactly the same way for every album.” On the dark art of the album cover: “It’s the Manticore ; a lion’s head and a scorpion’s tale and wings. We couldn’t have the typical Manticore picture that you see in books because that wouldn’t be ‘Cradle of Filth’, so we incorporated the woman’s figure and put wings on her. This is the first time we’ve worked with him (artist Matthew Vickerstaff) Originally I wanted to go back to doing something similar to the old artwork, like with the photographs of the women with all the scenery around them, but we couldn’t find anyone that could do it.”

THE DEFTONES ARE ONE OF THE MOST WHOLLY ORIGINAL AND INSPIRING HEAVY ROCK BANDS OF THE LAST THREE DECADES. THEY ARE ALWAYS LEFT-OF-CENTER, YET REVERED AMONG A WIDER AUDIENCE FOR THEIR EPIC AND PROGRESSIVE APPROACH. THEIR SEVENTH STUDIO ALBUM KOI NO YOKAN, IS FULL OF LUSH, WINDING SOUNDSCAPES – BOTH BEAUTIFUL AND DEVASTATING – AND SETS THE SCENE FOR THEIR RECENT SOLD OUT TOUR OF AUSTRALIA. FRONTMAN CHINO MORENO GIVES MANIACS AN INSIGHT INTO THEIR WORLD. On Koi No Yokan being a return to Deftones definitive dynamic style: “I’m sure it sounds like there are many things from our past that remind you of things but to me I really just thought whilst we were making it that we were kind of capturing that moment…When it’s just the five of us in a room and we shut the world out and just make noise together, it works really well. Right now everybody is in a creative spot, which is really good.” On the Japanese phrase Koi No Yokan: “It’s hard to fully describe: it’s is a very optimistic phrase which roughly translates to ‘love at first sight’ and this idea is that there is something in the future that is very warm. That’s sort of the definition that I took from hearing the words, it’s quite poetic by itself. We’re a heavy rock band and there’s a lot of music like that that’s naturally angry and I just felt like the music was coming from a more positive place or something more exciting, something to look forward to…” On the art of Koi No Yokan: “The artist – Futura - is someone we are big fans of and his son is 13th Witness. This is the first time they’ve been able to collaborate
on anything together. So we thought that was kind of cool. It’s one of those where you just see the picture and go “yeah that’s what this album looks like.”
On Chino’s ‘lesser known influences’: “A lot of British Rock and Roll, a lot of British New Wave music, Depeche Mode. I grew up listening to a lot of that kind of stuff. I didn’t listen to Metallica ‘till I was in high school, so my musical background came from a different place. At the same time as soon as I heard it I liked it and I was able to take the themes I liked and put them through my artistic gateway to make it my own.” On fond memories of Australia:“When we’ve been there it’s always summer time so just hanging out with good summer time vibes. We’ve done the festival type stuff but we don’t do too much touring on our own.” Chino Moreno, what makes you a Maniac? “Hmm, I don’t want to answer this so boringly and say my job, my career, but it’s pretty weird when I think I’m almost 40 years old and I go on stage and scream and sing for two hours every night…so when I think about it I think it makes me pretty crazy!” See the SWERVE CITY clip

AIRBOURNE ARE THE LIVING, BREATHING, SCREAMING, SPITTING, FIST-PUMPING EMBODIMENT OF ALL THAT HARD ROCK STANDS FOR. THEIR NEW ALBUM BLACK DOG BARKING IS FULL OF THE FUN-LOVING, HARD PARTYING, UNDERDOG ANTHEMS THE BAND HAVE COME TO BE KNOWN FOR AND IS IMBIBED WITH THE RECKLESS ABANDON OF THEIR LEGENDARY LIVE SHOWS. DRUMMER JOEL O’KEEFFE GAVE MANIACS THE QUICK AND NASTY LOW DOWN ON THE NEW STUFF. On Black Dog Barking: “It’s a Rock’n’Roll album, it’s relentless, it’s everything we got to give! We recorded 7 days a week for 3 months. It’s made to be played loud.” On The video for first single - Live It Up: “Hot Cars, hot Girls and Marshall stacks! It was a great time out there in the Aussie sun with tyres squealing and Rock’n’Roll blaring!”
On Airbourne’s ‘lesser known influences’: “Bruce Springsteen “The Boss” - I went to see two of his shows in Australia for the Wrecking Ball Tour! He tore the roof of the joint every night and the E Street Band was on fire! Max on the drums really holds that wild beast in tight.” On what makes Joel a Maniac?: “I love 80s early 90s High Concept Action Films, they’re always about a simple plot, big guns, tons of destruction and usually a good soundtrack. And finally today It’s good to see films like “Expendables 1&2” bringing that genre into the 21st century. Stallone and Arnie are back to making the big gun big budget films they rule in, Van Damme is still kicking ass, Chuck Norris hasn’t aged a bit and it’s good to see Bruce Willis is never gonna lay down his guns! Plus we’ve got a small breed of young guns making the action genre their own : Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Joel Edgerton and Sam Worthington. It’s all good times from here on!!”
On working with rock producer Brian Howes?: “Brian’s great and so is his right hand man Jay. We struck a real common ground and became a solid unit, it’s the perfect team! Brian is cut from the cloth of the old school producer except he’s doing it today, plus he has his own style. He knows how to kick arse to get results.” On the ‘art of the Black Dog…’: “The cover was done by The Sharp Brothers who are amazing artists and we’ve worked with them before. They managed to capture the vision we had and take it over the top!”
