“Avenged Sevenfold are THE sound and face of hard rock and metal in the new millennium.” - REVOLVER AVENGED SEVENFOLD have always unapologetically pushed things to the extreme and now with the release of sixth studio album Hail To The King, they have shown they can walk it like they talk with the album hitting the #1 spot in the US, the UK and a bunch of other countries around the world. We were not far behind with the album debuting at #2 on the ARIA chart, a career high for the Huntington Beach natives who site Guns ‘n’ Roses, Pantera, Iron Maiden and Metallica as major influences. Produced by Mike Elizondo, Hail To The King is the follow up to Nightmare, which also debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and Hard Rock Chart. Avenged Sevenfold made an unprecedented appearance as characters in the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 video game last November performing ‘Carry On’, and recently contributed ‘Shepherd of Fire’ to Call Of Duty II’s DLC pack – Origins.

But the biggest news of all is the Avenged Sevenfold will be one of the headline artists on Soundwave in 2014 – come and see for yourself why they are selling out arenas all over the world!

OVER THE YEARS TRIVIUM HAVE MORE THAN EARNED THEIR STRIPES, MOVING FROM ‘BAND TO WATCH’ EARLIER IN THEIR CAREER TO ‘ONE OF METAL’S FINEST’ AS THEY PREPARE TO RELEASE THEIR SIXTH STUDIO ALBUM VENGEANCE FALLS. THE ALBUM HAD ITS GENESIS WHILE THE BAND WERE ON THE ROAD SUPPORTING PREVIOUS ALBUM IN WAVES, WHICH IS WHERE THEY ALSO BEGAN THEIR BURGEONING PARTNERSHIP WITH DAVID DRAIMAN (DISTURBED/DEVICE), PROVING THAT IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES, ‘VENGEANCE’ JUST CAN’T WAIT! MANIACS GOT PERSONAL WITH GUITARIST COREY BEAULIEU. Tell us about the new album Vengeance Falls “If you’re a fan of Trivium I think you’re going to love the record. Pretty much everything we do as a band and all the elements that we have in our music is captured and it’s a fresh take on what we do. It’s got big songs, big hooks, all the riffs and solos that everyone loves to hear, so it’s just got everything that Trivium does but bigger and better and in your face.”

the whole record an instrument at a time. We were able to focus on one or two tracks at a time and put all our focus and creative energy into them so we could really develop ideas instead of pulling ourselves over 13 tracks.” What have you been listening to lately? “I’ve been listening to old Megadeth. The newest thing I’ve been listening to is the new DevilDriver record (Winter Kills). Mostly I’ve been listening to stuff I grew up on.” Are there any other artists you would like to work with? “We are always so busy focusing on our stuff and preparing what we are doing for our next record that I’ve never really written or approached writing music that wasn’t for Trivium stuff. The only thing I’ve come close to doing was a couple of guitar solos for other bands and then also Matt and I doing Roadrunner United with King Diamond.“ Corey Beaulieu, what makes you a Maniac? “I love metal and I love playing guitar. All I want to do is for the band, for music and for guitar.”

What was it like having David Draiman produce the record? “He brought a lot of his experience and shared it with us and showed us different ways of going about things which helped expand upon our sound and as individual players. We came up with creative ideas to make the songs stand out and give this record its own unique sound. It was a pleasure working with him!” Did you approach Vengeance Falls differently to previous records?: “We recorded it song by song instead of recording

IT WAS A DARK, HOT NIGHT IN ORLANDO FLORIDA, WHEN MANIACS CAUGHT UP WITH ALTER BRIDGE’S GUITAR WELDING VIRTUOSO, MARK TREMONTI, TO DISCUSS THEIR BRAND NEW ALBUM FORTRESS. IT’S A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SCENARIO TO WHAT THE BAND FACED WHEN PREPARING TO RELEASE ABIII BACK IN 2010, NOW THEY’RE SOMEWHAT OF A TOUCHSTONE IN MODERN ROCK CIRCLES. Fortress is your fourth album, where do you feel it sits at this point in your career? “I think Alter Bridge has built up to this moment. We keep trying to improve on what we were doing and hopefully every album shows that growth. When we first got the band together we were playing it a little more safe. (Fortress) we wanted to make a high energy… unpredictable with the arrangements and the key changes and time signatures.” Do you feel you have a little bit more freedom to explore different things or are there more expectations? “I think once we wrote the song ‘Addicted To Pain’, me and Myles (Kennedy-vocals) kind of agreed that could be our lead-off single so from that point on we could be as experimental as we wanted: bigger, better, harder and a fun record to perform live that was a main concern of ours.”

There are so many genres and splinter scenes in heavy music, yet AB play it pretty straight and are becoming known as being one of the best bands of that style “We play very classic routed rock and roll music, mixed with some heavy metal stuff. But we find it hard to find other bands to tour with a lot of the time. We’re not so metal that we can tour with the Metallica types but we’re not so alternative that we could go with the 30 Seconds To Mars’ of the world. We’re just trying to make the best songs out of what we’re influenced by, but not try and sound too much like anybody else. I don’t want to sound like a bunch of other bands.” Mark Tremonti, what makes you a Maniac? “I’m a maniac when it comes to the collecting of guitar amplifiers. I’ve got a studio that is jam packed and then I’ve got a guest room and all the furniture is guitar amplifiers cause I can’t find any more room - I’ve got them all through the hallways. I’ve got a problem, I’ve got an addiction, I need to talk to a therapist about it.”

There’s even more for GREEN DAY die-hards to get excited about with the release of ¡Cuartro! In Australia in November. MANY BANDS START OFF THEIR CAREER WITH A SELF-TITLED ALBUM BUT OTHERS SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY, CHOOSING THE VIEW THAT IT TAKES TIME TO DEVELOP AN ALBUM WORTHY OF SIMPLY BEARING YOUR NAME AND THAT ‘LESS’ IS INDEED ‘MORE’. IN THE CASE OF DREAM THEATER – WHOSE COMPLEXITY IS THEIR TRADEMARK - THAT’S ONLY PARTLY TRUE. MANIACS SPOKE TO KEYBOARDIST JORDAN RUDESS. The new self titled album… 12 albums in some bands would have had the creative juices stop flowing! “When Mike Portnoy left it was certainly an upsetting time especially emotionally. Once we determined that we were OK in the drummer department, we weren’t really too worried about writing the music because it’s mostly been John Petrucci (guitarist) and myself. The difference between the first album we did with Mangini and this one was that Mike Mangini was not part of the composition process for the first one. Because of his extreme rhythmic sensibilities, he really added a lot.” All great bands have a self-titled album - who’s idea was it to go with the basic Dream Theater name for the new record? “I think it really came from John.

He came in one day and was like ‘guys what do you think of this?’ and everybody was like ‘yeah that feels really right!” It’s a statement of intent, a return! It’s got a bit of an old school feel at times too, more of a focus on melody “I would say that. You know I was talking to somebody earlier, saying that there’s elements about this album that just feels kind of like a musical hug, you know? Like there’s this feeling. We like melody and even for Dream Theater it’s not just all about chops and the academics of the composition, it’s really about how it feels and walking away with a positive kind of like vibe.” Did Mr LaBrie have a big input onto this record? Because his vocals on this album are outstanding! “What we tried to do as composers was to write melodies that really will work for him as a person and for his range. He’s the singer, he knows what phrases and what things he can pull off. The end result is, especially on this album, it sounds so perfect for his voice.” Jordan Rudess, what makes you a MANIAC? “This crazy music that won’t stop going through my head! Even when I want to turn it off it keeps on going. I try to stay mellow while it’s happening but occasionally when I’m in front of my keyboard I think I probably turn into a little bit of a maniac.”

AS THE MAN TASKED WITH KEEPING SLIPKNOT’S ENERGY LEVELS IN CHECK, ALL WHILE WEARING A MASK AND STRAPPED INTO A REVOLVING DRUM KIT, YOU COULD UNDERSTAND IF JOEY JORDISON DECIDED TO TAKE THINGS EASY WHILE OUT OF THE STUDIO AND OFF THE ROAD. BUT AS HE DID WITH MURDERDOLLS, KORN AND ROB ZOMBIE, JORDISON HAS SHOWN ANOTHER SIDE OF HIS VERSATILITY WITH BRAND NEW PROJECT SCAR THE MARTYR. MANIACS CAUGHT THE HYPE. You’re a busy man touring with Slipknot and working on the new project Scar The Martyr. How do you manage? “I always find time. Not only with Slipknot. I played with Korn, I went out with Rob Zombie for a long time, I played with Satyricon, produced Three Inches Of Blood, I played with Ministry; there’s always time. The thing is, I just never take a break.” What do you do during downtime? “I usually try and get a catchy riff out a day. Regardless of whether or not I’ve got a record coming out because I know eventually I will need material and eventually I will hit a writer’s block.”

How does Scar The Martyr differ from writing a Slipknot album? “Being at the helm of this project I’m writing the music that I’m hearing in my head and I’m getting the idea down on a demo first. One of the first songs I wrote was ‘Blood Host’ and it was a lot different to what I had left off of Slipknot, so I took it as a starting point. I had so many ideas I kept recording and once I had more than a whole albums worth, I thought ‘Man, I gotta make a band out of this.” What’s it like when you do finally release a record? “Let me put it this way. We just got actual hard copies of the disk today – the first time I’ve seen it – we got the copies mailed to my house and I still haven’t listened to it. It’s like I’m nervous to play it. I feel like everything is cool right now, I don’t want to freak out on it.” Are you a fan of horror/cult films? “I loved Evil Dead 2. I think it’s funnier than the first one and it’s got more cheesy lines. I see it as more of a comedy than a horror film. I also like the first Phantasm movie with Angus Scrimm. When that movie came out it had such a creepy vibe. Same thing with the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It’s one that’s always up there for me.” Joey Jordison, what makes you a Maniac? “Every time I go to a record store it takes me hours to get out.”

Roadrunner Records celebrates its threedecades-plus legacy as one of the most highly regarded labels in heavy metal and hard rock history by releasing a four-CD boxed set covering a broad spectrum of heavy music. Veteran metal scribe Chris Dick has written the liner notes, which trace Roadrunner’s entire history and include quotes from founder, Cees Wessels; legendary A&R guru, Monte Conner; and artists King Diamond, Max Cavalera, Trivium frontman Matt Heafy, Opeth leader Mikael Åkerfeldt, Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison, and more. The first disc, “Foundations,” highlights the label’s early, reputation-building years. The second disc, “Horns Up,” sums up Roadrunner’s indelible impact on the metal scene of the 1990’s. The third disc, “And Metal For All,” brings the listener into the 2000’s and up to the present and the final disc, “Rock For The Ages,” focuses on Roadrunner’s hard rock contingent. A documentation of not just Roadrunner’s history but metal itself- XXX is testimony to the fact that Roadrunner was always, and continues to be, at the fore of the genre.

SATYRICON HAVE ALWAYS CARRIED ABOUT THEM AN AIR OF DARK MAJESTY AKIN TO THE MYTHICAL CREATURE FROM WHICH THEIR FRONTMAN TAKES HIS NAME. IN NORWAY, THEY ARE RESPECTED IN CIRCLES BEYOND THE BLACK METAL SCENE AS THEIR RECENT TURN WITH THE NORWEGIAN OPERA CHORUS ATTESTS. BUT THEN SATYRICON HAVE NEVER BEEN YOUR AVERAGE BEAST. MANIACS CAUGHT UP WITH THE ENIGMATIC SATYR ABOUT THEIR NEW ALBUM. Eight albums in, what makes this the time to release a self-titled album?: “In the 70’s and 80’s when the people selftitled records, most of the time it was to promote the band name because they were a new band on the scene, but in the case of Satyricon who has been going for 20 years to do a self-titled record is coming to a point in our career where we feel you define yourself as a band. We’re not just talking musical we’re talking philosophically and for us this record is not to be understood in the way that it’s typical Satyricon but because this is a very progressive record. Never have to this degree have I felt that we’ve done anything that represents the heart and the core of the band in such a way.” You also worked closely on the look and style of this album with the aim of giving it a timeless quality: “This is not just a record for now but it’s a record for the future as well and I don’t want to do anything that makes it dated. Just in the same way when you look at photos from yourself, depending on when you were born, anyone who was living during the 1980’s will look at photos of themselves from the 80’s and will think ‘oh my god’ (laughs). That’s why in the same way that

we did an analogue production on this record, everything was set out to be as organic and natural sounding as possible and that’s not something new to Satyricon but we were really uncompromising to a larger degree than we’ve ever been before.” What was it like working with Norwegian Opera Chorus? “We did a song with them a year and a half ago and I thought it was an amazing experience. That same night I said to the conductor that ‘wouldn’t it be great to do a whole show with us’ and he said ‘yeah, yeah I would love that’s. I would have wanted it to be several shows in a row but perhaps there will be a DVD and we’ll see. I think it’s an incredible learning experience to work with other musicians from other genres and especially classical music.” How was the process different creating this album to previous releases? “I decided on this record that I was going to try and work in a band environment when writing the music and not sit so much by myself so that there was more spontaneous interaction between Frost and myself in the songwriting. I did the majority of the rehearsals and the pre-production and all in the home owned by a sound engineer colleague of mine. It’s a very, very small little cottage, it dates back to 1550. It sounds really good in there!”

DEVILDRIVER AND THEIR SALT-OF-THE-EARTH MEETS FIRE-ON-THE-MOUNTAIN FRONT MAN DEZ FAFARA HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO THE HEART OF METAL FANS LONG ENOUGH TO BECOME SOMETHING OF AN INSTITUTION; AS PURVEYORS OF POWER-GROOVE DEATH-METAL AND FLAG BEARERS OF ‘METAL FOR POSITIVE EMPOWERMENT’. THERE’S A DEEP RUMBLING THAT SITS BREWING AND BURNING SLOWLY BENEATH THE MAELSTROM. A GROOVE HIDDEN BETWEEN THE GRAVEL THAT HAS BECOME THEIR CALLING CARD AND NOWHERE IS THAT BETTER OUT ON SHOW THAN THEIR SIXTH STUDIO ALBUM WINTER KILLS. MANIACS KILLED SOME TIME WITH DEZ FAFARA. Tell us about your latest album in your own words “It’s a groove heavy, big hook basher of a record! Each album we do has its own sound but our signature groove feel! You’ll like this one!” Is the cover artwork for Winter Kills a reflection of the music on the album? “We needed the cover to reflect the desolate feel of the winter in the California desert.”

This is your third album working with Mark Lewis. What makes you stick with a certain producer? “He knows how to get the best out of all the musicians as well as he knows how to keep our sound ‘ours’.” The new album feels even darker and groovier than your previous albums, was that a conscious decision? “We needed to get down to business on this one. Everything was organic in nature.” Are you a fan of horror or cult movies? “Yes! Love the original Universal Monsters, specially Dracula! Check out VIY (aka Viy/Viy, or Spirit of Evil (1967), it’s a Russian Fairy-tale.” If you were to put 6 tracks on a mix-tape, what would they be? 1. HANK III 2. SABBATH 3. JOHNNY CASH 4. BLACK FLAG 5. GERMS 6. KISS Do you have any advice on surviving winter? “Warm Clothes!” What makes you a MANIAC? STAR WARS! STAR TREK!! TOTAL SCI-FI GEEK!!!!!

THEY’VE BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE ‘THINKING PERSON’S METAL CORE BAND’ AND HAVE STEADFASTLY STOOD BY THEIR BELIEFS, DELVING DEEP AND REMAINING UNAFRAID TO POINT THE FINGER INWARD AS WELL AS OUTWARD. A RECENT VISIT TO AUSTRALIA WITH A DAY TO REMEMBER AHEAD OF THE RELEASE OF THEIR NEW ALBUM 8:18, SAW THEM AS SAVAGE AND DEFIANT AS EVER, PRESENTING A PREVIEW OF SOME OF THE NEWER MATERIAL IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE. MANIACS DISCUSSED THE MYSTERY AND THE TERROR BEHIND THEIR FIFTH ALBUM WITH ‘UN-CLEAN VOCALIST’ MIKE HRANICA. The lyrical content for 8:18 is much darker than with previous material, what’s motivated that? “I was really drawn to sadder things. I feel like there’s a very notable level of sustainability in sad movies, music or art. I think being able to understand suffering and tribulation is a key factor in being happy and living without ignorance; or hopefully as far from ignorance as possible.” The title 8:18 is quite cryptic – what does it refer to? “The title is based off Romans 8:18 which I came across a few years ago. I was just immediately very moved and inspired by it and I knew it was a good foundation or starting point for

what I wanted to do with the new record. It contains a certain level of intrigue and I think that it even comes with this kind of melodramatic immaturity; when everything is always so, so serious!” You’ve been noted as saying you feel heavy music has recently suffered from a lack of emotion or sincerity “I feel like there’s a very notable lack of intention with a lot of heavy music now. I think that people just don’t know what they want to do with music, I know that’s exactly how we were when we were young, but again I just don’t see that specific sincere intention behind heavy music that should be there. “ What was it like working with Adam D (Killswitch Engage) …again? “Adam and I have been able to build a wonderful relationship. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a dude and a musician/ producer and I think that we have a very coherent, encouraging and fruitful chemistry between us. He knows how to get me to perform to the best of my abilities and he knows when I’m frustrated and when to pump the breaks.” Mike Hrancia, what makes you a Maniac? “Words can’t describe my avid fan-ship of the Pittsburg Penguins, the (ice) hockey team. I love the speed, the athleticism and the brutality of it but it’s also very agile at the same time.”
