Happy Holidays! It’s that time of year again, that time we all look forward to and dread in equal measure. On the one hand, you have the cooler weather, the family reunions, the gift-giving, the unabashed feasting. On the other, you have crazy traffic, the stress of buying and delivering gifts, the packed social calendar, the overeating , the unwanted extra pounds. But let’s face it, the joys more than make up for the drawbacks, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Christmas is in full swing at Manila House. Our Christmas trees are up, our Christmas menu is irresistible, so you can celebrate the holidays your way. We have dine-in and take-away options: a selection of mouthwatering roasts - beef belly, turkey, lechon de leche, porchetta. And what’s Christmas without the music of the season? In a country where Christmas songs, both catchy and cheesy, dominate the airwaves as early as September, celebrating the season without carols is simply unheard of. So head on over on December 1, 8 and 15, when the Children’s Choir of CSA will be at Bonifacio Lounge to capture the spirit of the season through song, performing holiday favorites at lunch time. Of course, capping the holidays is the end-of-year celebrations. Join us for our New Year’s Eve sit-down dinner on December 31 (details in the Calendar on page 19), followed by the countdown to 2019. We are all looking forward to the New Year. This past year has been both tumultuous and rewarding for all of us at Manila House, and ultimately, the challenges of 2018 have prepared us to face 2019 with a stronger, more committed team intact.

MEET TH E S TA FF
Get to Know: Ryan Aguila He’s a Manila House veteran. Ryan was part of Manila House’s opening team, stationed at Bonifacio Dining. Now an F&B Supervisor, he remains many Members’ favorite server. You’ve been with Manila House since it opened. How has the Club evolved and how have you grown in your job? I started out as a Captain Waiter, and am now the F&B Supervisor. I was taught to work hard and this molded me to become better because of the experiences, challenges and trust Manila House offers me. It was not always easy, but in between hardships, my team - or should I say my honorable competitors - became my inspiration all throughout my journey. I also cite the great influence that came from my managers, Board Members, especially Ricco Ocampo and Anton San Diego. My Bonifacio team has been with me all throughout, and the Members who I handled since day one have all supported, guided us, and continuously help us improve our skills, and teach us to shine on our own for the betterment of not just our individual careers, but also for the Club. I have learned a lot, not just in service but in so many aspects of life in general. What has been the most rewarding experience you’ve had to date at Manila House? For me it is always rewarding once you see that your service is appreciated and Members are pleased with your work; all the hard work
and sweat instantly pays off. My daily goal is to provide satisfaction beyond what our Members expect. No matter how small or big the gesture is from our end, as long as our Members leave more than satisfied, all the hard work is worth it. How has your previous work experience prepared you for the challenges of working in a private members club? All the knowledge and teaching I have gained from my mentors and previous work helped me prepare myself for the challenges of Manila House. To this day, I still learn a lot of important things and skills from Manila House that I know will be very helpful for my future. When Members ask you to recommend dishes, which ones do you like to suggest?
mushrooms and arugula. And here’s a trick: try adding anchovies to make it more flavorful. But of course, I ask first their preference before I recommend the right dish for them.
It’s a tough question but what I always recommend is our Nasu Miso, a very flavorful appetizer that melts and pops in your mouth; definitely a must try. Another one is our Manila House Fried Chicken, really juicy, tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside, fried to perfection. It also comes with a special bacon gravy and mashed potato. Another suggestion is to try our brick oven Mushroom Truffle Pizza with shiitake
What do you do on your days off? During my rest days, I do things that relieve me from stress. Like playing basketball with my co-workers/friends, going to the beach, planning trips, and most importantly, spending time with my girlfriend.
What do you love about Christmas? It's the perfect time to visit family and friends and spend quality time together. I also love the food on Noche Buena, exchanging gifts, Christmas parties, the cold weather, and the generosity of the company (13th month pay!). I remember when I was a kid we used to sing Christmas carols in different houses and build Christmas lanterns. I just love Christmas, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. It’s about giving love and sharing happiness.

Two for the Road The Japanese speak of Seijaku (静寂) as serenity in the midst of activity. It is a calm yet energized state in a busy life; similar to being in a Japanese garden set inside a bustling city. This active tranquility is essential to being productive despite the many stresses of the urban life. It is finding our center, in the midst of the flurry

ABOUT RAMON ORLINA
Ramon Orlina and Olivia d’Aboville
Ramon Orlina is the Philippines’ foremost glass sculptor. An architect by profession, armed with creativity and passion, he managed to transform local industrial green glass cullets into highly sought after works of art since 1976, and has become one of the most prolific Philippine sculptors since. For this exhibition, he creates fourteen works, which use green glass, optical glass, and crystal in electric blue, Mediterranean blue, orange, pink, and deep amber hues, reminiscent of the sea at various times of the day. Like the sea, they reflect and refract light, in different ways, as one moves around, inducing a sense of delight from the viewer. Introduced in this exhibition are two new techniques: the radiating facets seen in Poetry in Motion 2017, and the vertical facets of Cityscape 2017, echoing the pleats of the works of Olivia d’Aboville.
PeopleAsia recognized him as one of 2014’s People of the Year. In 2006, he was awarded The Outstanding Filipino award for his accomplishments in the visual arts. In 1993 he was bestowed the ASEAN Awards for Visual Arts. Among his international recognitions are the “Mr. F” prize in the 1999 Toyamura International Sculpture Biennale in 1999, and the First Prize in the Sculpture Category of the II Bienale International del Baloncesto en las Bellas Artes 2000 in Madrid, Spain.

Fabric sculpture by Olivia d’Aboville
bigger pieces contain at least fourteen meters of this fabric, which start off as digital designs by d’Aboville which are printed on the warp fibers of the fabric prior to weaving, creating a modernized process similar to the traditional Southeast Asian ikat. The woven fabric is then pleated by the artist, and embroidered on a fabric support by her assistants, highlighting the cooperative and laborious manner in which textile has always been traditionally produced. The works are finished by d’Aboville by painting designs on the fabric using lightfast inks, showcasing her ability to fuse traditional and modern techniques in her work. The pleats, which echo the undulating waves of the sea, create three-dimensionality and movement to the works, and capture light and shadow in different ways as one sees it from different angles. The sheen of modern polyester over traditional abaca create a soft reflection which aid in contemplation.
Glass sculpture by Ramon Orlina
ABOUT OLIVIA D'ABOVILLE Olivia d’Aboville obtained her diploma in Arts and Textile Crafts at the Duperré School of Applied Arts in Paris, France. Her homecoming and first solo exhibition in the Philippines was at the Ayala Museum in 2010, where she brought viewers down to the Chasm of Fantasies, by simulating marine animal forms using recycled plastics and black light, tying ecological awareness to her art at the same time. This exhibition shortlisted her for the prestigious Ateneo Art Awards.
Aside from being an artist, d’ Aboville is a regular curator of the Malasimbo Art and Music Festival, an annual international event in Puero Galera, Mindoro. She is also a regularly featured designer and curator of the NeoTextiles Philippines.
Olivia d’Aboville turns to the sea for inspiration in Seijaku. A constant source of creativity, d’ Aboville has a special sensitivity to the sea, being a diver, and spending summers in Puerto Galera, where her family has a home. The ocean’s movement, the way the light reflects on it and passes through it, have always inspired her in her artmaking. For this exhibition, it was the reflections over the sea: of the setting sun, and the rising full moon, reflected by the calm waves, which the artist reinterpreted over her pleated handwoven high grade abaca polyester textile. Each of the

Leading the Cutting Edge of Innovation Our Monday Minds speaker last October shared his experience and insights on how the Cutting Edge of Innovation is the exact point where nearly all successful ideas have been developed Gov Daswani is the founder and creative director of industry-leading newborn apparel brand, Beginnings Baby and groundbreaking product line Sacred Six Months, and co-founder of Lagu, the world’s first sand-repellent beach blanket. So, what was the secret sauce for his well-timed innovation? Linking the theory of evolution to successful innovations, Gov referred to Ray Dalio defining how evolution is simply the process by which things adapt and improve. A new problem In his framework, the edge of innovation is achieved as a result of a rigorous dive into becoming the authority or master of the category and find its vulnerabilities. After spending months of research on skin care, mothers and newborns, he found his innovation in formulating the world’s first newborn cleanser made specially for the first six months. And the rest is history. As we carried out the discussion further with the group, he encouraged budding innovators to be bold in finding and building on the cutting edge. Be the master and authority in a category that interests you and find a vulnerability that nobody has solved. He also shared more insights quoting authors of business innovation to learn from their expertise and experience*. His straightforward guide to innovation is to hack good timing by becoming the person most qualified to build on the cutting edge of the “world” you choose to innovate and taking it to its new edge.
or challenge arises from every solution’s diminishing return and this is a point of “good timing” for innovators to evolve towards the cutting edge of an industry or field of business. He shared his story on how he built the product line, Sacred Six Months for newborns; the company would later be successfully acquired.

WEDDING H
ong Kong's Queen of Cakes, award-winning author and overall style icon, Bonnae Gokson, launched her second book Weddings, Butterflies & The Sweetest Dreams last October 20 at Manila House. The Intramuros ballroom was transformed into a dreamy wedding reception that evening to celebrate love and the sweetest dreams. The room was made even more dazzling by displayed beautiful wedding gowns from international fashion designer, Vera Wang. One of the highlights of the evening was the seven-tiered cake trimmed

with beautifully wrapped handcut pastillas from Bulacan, which took hundreds of hours to make. The guests were delighted to have their own copy of the book signed by Bonnae Gokson herself. The King of Philippine Acoustic Pop, Nyoy Volante, made the night even more special when he serenaded the author and romanced the crowd with his heartfelt rendition of "My Eyes Adore You." The night ended with lots of dancing and free-flowing wine and cocktails from MoĂŤt Hennessy Philippines, Wine Warehouse, and ARC Gin.

What do you love about belonging to a Club?
How do you like to unwind when you’re not working?
What I love about being a member of a club is having a sense of belonging to a community of peers in an exclusive but welcoming environment.
When not working, I like to spend time with my three-year-old son Lukas in a place that provides meaningful and memorable experience for both of us.
Do you use Manila House more for business or pleasure?
As an avid traveler, what destinations did you recently cross off your bucket list?
I go to Manila House both for business and pleasure.
I recently traveled to Chile and Peru to visit Patagonia and Macchu Picchu, two places on my bucket list.
Are you confident about the real estate market in the Philippines for the foreseeable future? Where are the areas of strength?
What are your Christmas plans?
Yes. I have great confidence in the continuing strength of the real estate market in the years ahead due to the growing affluent sector resulting from the improved economic conditions both domestically and globally.
Aside from the usual holiday get-together with family and friends, I plan to stay home and enjoy my newly-renovated place. For me, there is no better way to celebrate Christmas than to be home with my loved ones, and to be able to do it in a refurbished surrounding will be all the more uplifting and inspiring.
