Get to Know: Marvie Cababat Personable and always on the go, Marvie assumed the position of Membership Manager earlier this year How did your previous work experience prepare you for your current position as Membership Manager? My previous work in the real estate industry molded me to become a person who can handle any type of client, build good rapport, and long term relationships with them, be resilient, and to always have a positive outlook. All these things I’ve learned, I brought here and it equipped me for my position as Membership Manager. As a travel enthusiast, what are the most memorable places you’ve visited? That’s a hard question, but I’ll always enjoy Japan, Italy, and going around our different islands here in the Philippines. I invest in experiences so traveling is really my outlet. I love immersing myself in new places and things, experiencing their culture and cuisines. I also have a lot of memorable weekend drives to the beach to just chill and watch the sunset or go up to Tagaytay/Baguio for some downtime. What is the most rewarding part about working in a private members club? Apart from the really nice interiors and great team I work with everyday, it is the feeling of being able to meet the most influential people that I never thought I would meet in this lifetime, learn from their success stories and be inspired by their visions. These make the job so rewarding.
Marvie Cababat Membership Manager I describe myself as joyful, independent, and adventurous. A little known fact: I speak fluent Italian and Ilocano Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? Since I am getting married next year, I pray that five years from now I’ll have three kids, a happy family, and a business of our own.

Zelda Kienle
Biker babe, elegant swan, working woman, world traveller, glamorous grandma—all these easily apply to Zelda Kienle. Not many women carry themselves with true grace while running after gorgeous grandchildren, and yet is down for a drink and a hearty laugh, but Zelda manages to be sophisticated, down-to-earth, and refreshingly genuine at the same time What are you most looking forward to during the holidays? I am looking forward to family gettogethers and travels around this time of the year, spending quality time with my daughters and their families. I love fixing up our place by decorating and putting up the Christmas tree to make it festive and cozy, especially now that we have three grandchildren. 5
I am also looking forward to and excited about getting together with my mom and siblings, some of who are coming home for the holidays. We’ll all have a great time catching up over good food, fun and laughter like we used to. Your grandchildren are adorable! Were you a strict mother when you were raising your kids? What is your grandparenting style?
I was a hands-on mom and spent a lot of time with my daughters while they were growing up. I was a loving mother to them and I think real love demands being strict and firm in a certain way, but fair. I instilled in them good values and taught them the difference between right and wrong. Communication was important in letting them understand things, and I hardly punished them, if I remember right, when they did wrong.

The Kienle clan: Zelda and Max with Jessica, Jesse and Luca Maxwell, Christian, Stephanie, Andrea, and Arielle Gonzalez
My grandchildren are the love of my life! They are very cute and can be naughty at times, but I must say, they are well-behaved and well-educated by their parents. They are sweet, loving and smart little ones. I am so blessed to have them in my life as they give me so much joy and happiness. When they are with me I try to apply the same style as I did with their mothers when they were growing up. I must admit that I tend to be more flexible with them! Now I understand why grandparents are known to spoil their grandkids! I guess that’s the fun part of parenting! Philux, the furniture company you started with Max, is also your baby, and turning 40 soon. To what do you attribute the success and longevity of the company? The key to Philux’s success and longevity in the business is our commitment and dedication to exceptional quality design, service, and value. Our product lines have expanded through the years from traditional and classic to modern contemporary pieces of timeless

designs. Our brand is about Filipino craftsmanship through the creation of high quality pieces at the best value. Since my daughters Stephanie and Jessica joined the family business, they have brought a new dimension into the brand to make it more attractive and exciting; they are constantly developing new designs incorporating local materials, reflecting our heritage.
we went to the Cordillera Mountains, an amazing ride as the roads up in the mountains were very good and the views were spectacular—we saw the gigantic mountains of Ifugao, Benguet and Mountain Province, the rice terraces, the beautiful rivers below some waterfalls, lush forests with pine trees and the people with smiles on their faces who live up in the mountains.
Max is big on motorbike rides. What and where have been your most memorable rides with him?
The second was a bike trip we did last April in South Africa, a beautiful ride of 2,700 km from Cape Town to Johannesburg, passing through the southernmost tip of the country all along the sea coast, passing through mountains, inland garden routes, and beautiful towns. We enjoyed the scenic beauty of the place, mostly with the backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountains all along the ride. We stopped over to two or three days in six beautiful towns and got to visit and experience the different places and meet lovely people. At the end of the day we would relax in very nice accommodations and get ready for the next days’ adventure. It was definitely a very memorable bike ride!
When I met Max in 1980, he was already an avid motorcycle biker. He always had a bike, even today. Through the years we did some bike rides together and I appreciate him wanting to share with me the fun of it. Max is so passionate about it, about the way it gives you a sense of freedom and immersion and connection to the world around you. You can take a map and decide to go to places sometimes cars may not reach. It can be very exciting. Thee were two memorable rides I’ve done with Max. The first was when

A glimpse of Spanish colonial life in the Philippines with strong religious undertones comes across in a unique exhibition that is a collaboration between artist and visionary
S
everal years ago while touring Bohol, I made a short stop at the Alburquerque Church. There I met the conservator of the church’s treasures who called himself Guy Custodio. He told me that he used to paint in Barcelona, Spain, but, after visiting Bohol, he was enchanted by the place and decided to stay. He was repainting the church ceiling, hanging precariously like a bat. I then purchased some of his works, icons of the Blessed Virgin Mary and saints, done in the Filipino colonial style. As an historian, I have always been fascinated with church history—our church history. Political history during the Spanish period went hand in hand with ecclesiastical history. The lowly indio was tied to the Spanish escutcheon and the cross. Thus, the indio never had a chance. After seeing some of Guy Custodio’s works, an idea germinated in my mind. What if I ask him to paint what is inside my head? These paintings, which are now called HOCUS—an acronym of our surnames, Hofileña and Custodio, are the products of that initial idea. The signature of the HOCUS paintings is actually a rubrik, I call him the 7
angel de cuyacuy. He is a Filipino angel sitting on a bench and reading a book with one leg swaying nonchalantly. He is an angel destined to battle ignorance and superstitions and not Satan’s murderous horde. At first, I would email symbols I wanted Guy Custodio to project on canvas. Later, I let him use one of my apartments as his atelier. It is located in bucolic Dasmariñas, Cavite. He painted daily, giving life to my images on canvas, with his skillful brush strokes. A few feet away from him, another craftsman is engaged in the nearly extinct art of book binding. Before I knew it, I had set up a sort of medieval scriptorium. Some have asked me about the validity of our partnership. I only remind them of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Simon and Garfunkel and the Gershwin brothers of the jazz age, whose partnerships in the musical arts have produced music and songs still being heard and sung today. We have been working together for almost four years now. The paintings in this book are the fruits of our collaboration. We have agreed that none of the paintings will be repeated.

Some of the paintings are based on historical facts, a few were dictated by fancy but still subject to the realities of history. The tarot cards in the panel have been transformed into real tarot cards and the deck is the only playable tarot cards with Philippine themes. In fact, most of the paintings are allegorical, using characters and events to unveil what has been hidden from us by religious fervor. I will say nothing further and let the HOCUS (Hofileña-Custodio) paintings speak for themselves. The canvases tell our story as a people—why we are who we are. We are the story that we tell. - Saul Hofileña Jr.

DAVID CHUA Director Slow quality time with loved ones
JORGE LICHAUCO Independent Director I wish that everyone would have the opportunity to spend a lot of time with their family and have a happy holiday season!
Christmas is a celebration of Christ’s birth, a joyous moment of sharing and loving. But it is also a time for reflection on the year that has passed and a rejuvenation of hope for what the future brings. As past Chairman of the Club, one of my ardent wishes is to see the Club grow and prosper while continuously providing the unique Manila House experience to its growing family.
DORIS MAGSAYSAY-HO Vice-Chairman If I had a magic wand, I would wish for roads to open up and public transport to suddenly appear so that no one would have to waste their precious time and productivity in traffic. Since I do not have a magic wand, I wish that each of us would cooperate with government agencies and LGUs to find ways to master plan our cities so we can make them liveable to live, work, and play for everyone.
