A 2020 Christmas What a year 2020 has been! We started on a high note, ready to face the new year with zest and confidence. Even as reports were emerging from China in January and February, little did we know that a pandemic was going to come and redefine our lives so irrevocably. It’s been a year of challenges and calamities, and we have endeavored to adapt to the new normal in creative ways in order to survive. We’ve had to make difficult decisions, regretfully letting go of staff who have become family, and reluctantly giving up half the Club’s space to ease our overhead. We thank you most sincerely, for your commitment to the Club at a very critical time. We’ve also had to accept that many people are still wary about going out, no matter how stringent our safety protocols are. And with good reason, as the IATF and the City of Taguig still recommend staying at home as much as possible to control the spread of COVID-19. Nevertheless, in a year that has seen the Philippines badly affected, not just by the effects of the pandemic, but also a volcanic eruption, two supertyphoons, and a weakened economy, there is hope. We all rallied around, once more, to help our countrymen displaced by the massive floods, without food or shelter, in the wake of Typhoons Goni and Ulysses. Here at Manila House, we revived our Hot Meals for Heroes food programme, renaming it Hope in a Hot Meal and partnered with the Philippine Red Cross to deliver hot meals to those affected by the typhoons. To date, we’ve raised enough for 150 meals, and continue to receive more donations. Members may also use their monthly consumables and donate the amount to the programme. Again, we thank you for your support.
Manila House Rewards is easy and convenient to access. The attached hyperlink https://manila-house.eber.co takes you to the registration/login page. You will be able to log in to your account using the primary email or mobile number connected to your Club membership.

And so, as we welcome December, we realize that the holidays may be a muted one, with festivities dialed down to low, as we celebrate with immediate family. For bigger gatherings, there’s always Zoom. Whichever way you decide to welcome Christmas and the New Year, you can count on Manila House for holiday platters, boxed up meals, or sit down dinners, at the Club or on takeaway. Please turn to page seven for our festive offerings, prepared by our Executive Chef, Jerome Cartailler.

Get to Know: Rosabelle Olequino
She was part of Manila House’s opening team. From server to Junior Supervisor in just a few years, Rosabelle has proven to be a valuable part of the Club's F&B team What impressed you most when you first stepped into Manila House? I think the furniture. When I started working here, all the furniture was on the 37th floor because Manila House hadn't finished being decorated yet, so I had no idea how it would look. When we started moving into the 8th floor, I was amazed at how they put it together with the plants as décor. The vibe was really homey and relaxed. How would you describe your career growth in the F&B Operations Department? I’ve been working in the F&B Department for about five years now and my career here at Manila House has been a step-by-step process. I started working here as a server, and after two years I got promoted to Service Captain, and now I'm a Junior Supervisor. My years of working here have taught me a lot about the F&B field, and I'm also thankful for the guidance of my superiors and co-workers, who also helped me improve and learn more.
My go-to Manila House drink is Calamansi Mint. It is sweet and refreshing. My favorite Christmas movie is How The Grinch Stole Christmas. I love how Jim Carrey portrayed the Grinch-he is really funny and smart. The one thing I can’t live without is my iPod. I really like strolling while listening to music.
What is your most memorable Christmas celebration?
If travel restrictions are lifted, where would you go right now?
When I am home celebrating with my family. In my field of work, I'm often on duty during the holidays, so it is hard to have time to celebrate Christmas and New Year's with my family.
South Korea! I was supposed to travel this year with my friends, but it got cancelled because the pandemic happened. Hopefully next year. I really wanted to go there because I am amazed with their cultural heritage and also their food!

Scott Moore
A Canadian national, and a hockey player to boot, Scott Moore is the Country Head for the Philippines of Henley & Partners, a global firm specializing in investment immigration. While the company’s regional office is in Singapore, the Philippines has become an important market. Pre-pandemic, Scott was in the country every month; he looks forward to returning soon How did you end up dividing your time between the Philippines and Singapore? Filipinos have a global culture to begin with, whether it’s through children going overseas for post-secondary education, relatives living and working abroad, or its colonial past. It was a natural choice to grow the Philippines into one of our top producing global markets. What do you miss most about being in the Philippines, seeing as the pandemic has limited your travels? 5
In the Philippines, family comes first, and luckily for me I’ve been welcomed into many of these families. I miss visiting friends and clients the most. Where are you thinking of heading out to first, the minute travel restrictions are lifted? Last year I spent 120 days in Philippines, this year I’ve only spent 12. As soon as travel opens I’ll have my PAL tickets booked to Manila with my eye on some of the beaches for the weekend.

“Filipinos, like many other nationalities, are seeing the value in having second or even third options for their families in the future.”
It used to be that second passports were kept secret, especially among Filipinos. Why has the citizenship and residence by investment sector expanded all over the world?

Filipinos, like many other nationalities, are seeing the value in having second or even third options for their families in the future. I’m advising not just for the current family, but also for unborn future generations. It’s interesting to learn that doors like this can open for families through property investment. How did you survive the lockdown? Favorite movies? Series? Books? Food cravings? I bought a mountain bike, the perfect sport for social distancing! Thankfully now we’ve resumed playing ice hockey in Singapore. My favourite book during lockdown was Sapiens, and I’ve become quite a pizza chef perfecting my dough and sauce recipe. 6

The Art of the Matter
Founding Member Richie Lerma lives and breathes art. He established Philippine auction house Salcedo Auctions, which he runs together with his wife Karen. He shares with us his six all-time favorite works of art
I would of course include the greatest Philippine art discoveries in recent time: Juan Luna y Novicio Boceto for ‘Spoliarium’
Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo ‘La Pintura‘
ABOUT RICHIE LERMA Ramon E.S. (Richie) Lerma is Chairman & Chief Specialist at Salcedo Auctions. He was formerly Director and Chief Curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery, and Head of the SubCommittee of Art Museums of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). He has an MA in Art Administration from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia and a BA in Humanities (cum laude) from the Ateneo de Manila University. For over two decades, Lerma has worked towards increasing the profile of Philippine art through the various strategic partnerships that he has forged with the academic, arts and culture, media, business, and financial communities. His key initiative in the local contemporary art scene is the Ateneo Art Awards, which 9
he established in 2004. Today, the Awards is recognized locally and internationally as the most prestigious prize for an emerging visual artist in the Philippines. He opened Salcedo Auctions with his wife Karen in 2010, providing an alternative venue for the sale and acquisition of Philippine art and other collectibles, in the process setting new benchmarks for their valuation. Lerma was contributing art critic of the Philippine Daily Inquirer (1997-1999), and wrote a column, “ArtSpeak,” for The Philippine Star (2004-2007). As editor of the book Tanaw: Perspectives on the Painting Collection of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines), Lerma received the 2006 National Book Award for Art (Alfonso T. Ongpin Award for Best Book on Art) from the Manila Critics Circle, and the 2006 Gintong Aklat (Golden Book) Award for the Arts from the Book Development Association of the Philippines. In 2012, he repeated this feat when he received the National Book Award for Art as co-publisher of the book The Life and Art of Lee Aguinaldo.

Modern Art This is the most powerful modern work of art, hands down. Breathtaking and deeply moving. Pablo Picasso ‘Guernica’
Renaissance Art I also greatly admire Piero della Francesca, whose enigmatic works I had the opportunity to research in depth when I studied Renaissance Art in Florence. Piero della Francesca ‘The Flagellation of Christ’
International Art Velazquez always tops my list! Diego Velazquez ‘Las Meninas’
Contemporary Art Seeing Christian Marclay’s video installation ‘The Clock’ at the Venice Biennale back in 2011 was an art experience I will never forget. 10

BOO! Let Halloween Be-GIN! ARC Gin, together with Anton San Diego and Bambina Olivares, hosted a virtual gin event with a Halloween theme, with elixir emissary and master mixologist David Ong showing attendees how to make the perfect G&T, as well as a refreshing rose-infused drink, Kiss from a Rose. Matthew Westfall did a guided gin tasting, and spoke about the history of ARC's award winning artisanal craft gin. Everyone had to pay attention, however, as there was a pop quiz right after that, with exciting prizes for the winners.

anila has been undergoing a revival in recent years, with the restoration of Jones Bridge, the launch of the National Museum of Natural History, and the completion of the Museo de Intramuros among the most high profile projects to date. The challenge has always been respecting the city’s storied heritage while ensuring a future that is modern, relevant and sustainable. A panel of passionate heritage advocates, conservators and architects-Ivan Man Dy, Founder of the Old Manila Walks, Martin Lopez, Director of the FEU Center for the Arts, Lorelei de Viana, Executive Director of the Center for Filipino Architecture of the United Architects of the Philippines, Tina Paterno, President, International Council on Monuments and Sights (ICOMOS) Philippines-discussed the challenge of protecting and preserving over 450 years of heritage and culture of Manila amidst the intense urban activity happening in the city, while giving way to modernization and development. Gender Issues
It has often been said that the world would be a more peaceful place if more women were in positions of leadership. While that may be debatable, there does seem to be some truth in how what has been called “a woman’s touch” impacts governance, and this is evidenced by how countries led by women have responded to the COVID-19 crisis
Clockwise from top left: Delia Albert, Anke Reiffenstuel, Michael Peiyung Hsu, Peter Kell
T
here is empirical evidence that infection rates and number of deaths have been lower in countries helmed by women. As representatives of three such countries-represented by their ambassadors, Anke Reiffenstuel of Germany, Peter Kell of New Zealand, and Michael Peiyung Hsu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office-discussed the ways in which their governments have been successful in containing the spread of the virus, as well as the attendant challenges to the economy, certain commonalities emerged. There is the trust in science when formulating an effective strategy, a consultative and collaborative approach with all stakeholders in both government and civil society, as well as transparency in 15
communicating with citizens about the realities of the disease and the challenges ahead, and inclusivity and empathy. As Amb. Reiffenstuel emphasized, as far as the government of Chancellor Angela Merkel is concerned, they believe that “no one is safe until everyone is safe.” Opening the webinar was one of the Philippines’ most remarkable and accomplished women, former Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Delia Albert, whose own groundbreaking career in the foreign service is a testament to the tenacity and excellence of women in leadership roles. Presented in partnership with Asia Society Philippines.
