FROM THE HEART After almost a year, quarantine fatigue has set in, and understandably so. We’re itching to go out, see friends and travel without fear of contagion. The news of the vaccine brings much hope, but it may be a while before we can pick up where we left off last March. All the more reason to be extra vigilant these next few months, as we await the roll-out of the vaccine in our country. There are reports that this might not happen till the third or fourth quarter of 2021, and would require, as the experts have recommended, that some 70-80 per cent of the population be vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity. In the meantime, the virus continues to mutate into even more easily transmissible variants. The danger is clearly not over. It’s important, on a personal level, to look after ourselves, and keep our immunity levels high. Last month’s webinar with LifeScience underlined the role our immune system plays in our responsiveness to the vaccine, once we receive it. It makes perfect sense; vaccines work by triggering an immune response in our bodies. If our immune system is weak, then the vaccine will not protect us as effectively as it should. This being the Year of the Ox, we should all strive to be as strong as an ox!

Meet the Director of Sales
Pinky Flores-Arceo Pinky Flores-Arceo leads the sales team at Manila House. Her leadership has proven vital in guiding the team and tackling the challenges brought about by the pandemic What do you look forward to this year, at work and at home? Good health for my family and myself, and good business for Manila House! What drew you to Manila House? Aside from being encouraged to work here by old time colleagues, of course there was the beautiful ambience, the beautiful ambiance, and the very warm, welcoming and all-smiling Reception Team. It made me feel that I was right at home. What would you consider to be the biggest challenge you've faced while at Manila House, and how did you overcome it? Everything is challenging… I used to question myself - did I make the right decision? And my answer would always be that I wanted to part of the Club's glory. When I joined Manila House in the latter part of 2018, we were not doing very well in terms of sales. Our numbers were down during the peak season! I was tasked to take over the Sales Team in mid-2019. Thankfully, together with a very hardworking team, we managed to correct this by the third quarter of 2019, carrying on until the first two months of 2020. Sadly, COVID-19 happened! Streamlining was heartbreaking, but the overwhelming support from our members from the recent Save the Club Campaign was the game changer. It uplifted our spirits and we felt the love from all our members. Like many other establishments, we are still struggling today; I am hopeful that we will all get through this.

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day? My husband and I are not so much into Valentine's Day. We go out every time we feel like it, we just try to make it memorable and special every day. There was this one time, though, when we were not yet married, he picked me up from work after manning the registration of the Valentine Dinner in one of the prestigious clubs I worked at. From the parking lot, he was walking towards me holding a bouquet of flowers. He never gives flowers... and that was when I knew that he was the answer to my prayers. • The most romantic movie is… The Notebook. • The ear of your life would you like to relive... I would love to go back at the age of 25, when I could eat all the chips I want without gaining any weight! Haha! • The last thing I bought for myself was… Skin care. • My guilty pleasures are...Chips, chips and chips!

BUTCH ALBERT
A valued member of Manila House’s Executive Committee, Butch Albert is the kind of person who gives his all to any endeavor he involves himself with. The Chairman of Fila iSportlife Inc., is also a devoted husband to wife Cris, with whom he has two children, Carlo and Bela. And he is a committed Christian and philanthropist who tends to his ministries and charities
What was a regular day for you like before the pandemic? What is your daily routine now? A typical pre-pandemic day would be going to the office three times a week to see where I can assist my CEO wife Cris.
We have bonded together in a deeper way as we are able to work together, grow spiritually together.
I would attend to Christ the Living Word Church at Welfareville, Addition Hills Mandaluyong, where I am associate pastor and chairman. I look into the the progress of Operation Compassion Philippines, of which I am president. We deal with disaster response and rebuilding communities and of course, my favourite, IFoster. We match potential parents to orphans and abandoned children. And of course, I excercise a few hours a week: gym, tennis, polo.
We got to really know each other better as we adjusted to staying closely bound together. We started off by assigning a chef for the day; we stay in the kitchen together, schedule work time and devotional time together. We, Cris and the kids are all really closer to one another. Cris and I really rediscovered or discovered new ways and things that have been positive to our relationship. This is now routine.
My routine now is just about the same but I don’t go to the office anymore; it is Cris who goes two to three times a week, and we just discuss business by Zoom or at home. There is a lot more time at home with family. There is bonding spiritually and involvement in each other’s affairs. There are no polo matches but I get to jog or ride at the field which gives me an outdoor life of some sort.
How has your family life deepened as a result of the pandemic?
9
MH | I N T E R V I E W
You have a passion for equestrian sports. How did that develop? I used to do casual riding a long time back but stopped for for life decades ago. But Cris was annually sponsoring the famous Fila Cup for about 18 years. This got my attention again, I started to ride once more and got hooked. And here I am, still riding today. You’re part of the Food Committee. What is the perfect comfort food for you? And if sky’s the limit, what would be served during your ultimate blow-out dinner?
"There is a lot more time at home with family. There is bonding spiritually and involvement in each other’s affairs."
You know, I like food in general, and most of our food gets the thumb’s up from me. We try almost everything (pork belly, inasal, tinola, bistek, Japanese food). For a blow-out I will include the Japanese teppanyaki, cochinillo, the huge fish in the center... The minute we’re allowed to travel freely, where would you go for a romantic getaway? For a family holiday? We were set for a Niseko New Year, already paid for, with the family. We may start there. Then Cris and I may revisit Courchevel or Venice to see the new Aman there.

ENDLESS LOVE
We asked our Members: How do you keep the romance going strong during a pandemic?
Dennis and Stacey Alog
"With our new normal, we still continue to follow our own interests and hobbies, and we highly respect our ME time."
During the lockdown, the hardest thing to do was get out of the kitchen. We both promised to stay fit and healthy, and so we became workout buddies. (And at night, we relive our romance, with a nice foot message as a treat for each other!) Before, we used to love movie dates at the cinema two to three times a month. Thanks to the power of the internet, during the pandemic we got to bring the movie theater into our home so we could watch all the K-dramas on Netflix. Another thing is watch each other work @ home. There's no bigger turn-on than seeing your partner do what they're good at. And what we are most grateful for is the gift of life that we share together with our three beautiful children, Seven, Dewann and Isha. They make our love more alive during these trying times. This bond of family allows us to enjoy being together and being with our kids 24/7. Despite the whirlwind times, there's always a lot of good to be grateful for. We lift each day through God's grace - that is our Love Secret Recipe - now everyone knows. God does miracles and wonders in us.
RJ and Liezel Pangilinan
"The pandemic truly affects all of us."
It tested our faith but the most important learning from this, is to value what truly matters and this is our relationship. We constantly support each other to overcome all the challenges of the pandemic. We spent more time together at home watching Netflix, enjoyed date nights at the Avenue Bar, and we prayed - all these, too, shall pass.

Tim Yap and Javi Martinez "Take things one day at a time. Have a good sense of humor. Surprise each other a lot. Repeat."
Must mask from negative thoughts and shield each other from things / people / situations that do not make you better or enhance your harmony. Wash your hands off of unnecessary feelings of guilt, pride and ego and just focus on the love and respect that you have for each other. Disinfect your space from bad memories of the past and fill it up with only the good.
"We just celebrated our 30th anniversary with food boxes from Manila House!" Jim and Missy Ayala Just before the pandemic, Jim and I learned about the Four Gifts Love class that is a foundation for helping couples create and sustain a lifestyle that results in romantic love in a marriage. We attended this eight-session class at Manila House! Honestly, we are more committed than ever to giving each other the gift of Honesty, Care, Protection and Time.

QUALIFIED IMMUNITY
It’s been a challenging 11 months for all of us, and the arrival of the vaccine brings new hope in the fight against COVID-19. However, it’s not the time to let down our guard. The vaccine roll-out may not happen till the second quarter of 2021 at the earliest; therefore it’s important to remain healthy and Covid-free. Dr. Ronnah Ong, a Functional Medicine doctor with the LifeScience Center, emphasized the need to keep our immune systems strong and resilient, in preparation for the vaccine. There are five important factors that affect one’s overall health and immunity levels: Stress Reduction, Nutrition, Relationships, Exercise and Sleep. If, for example, we are stressed and lack sleep when we take the vaccine, our bodies may not respond effectively, thereby possibly leaving still compromised and vulnerable to infection. She linked the body's immune system to a football field game, and how teams had layers of defense to play an effective game. ECONOMY CLASS
The Philippine economy remains under siege due to COVID-19. It contracted sharply in 2020; according to official figures, the economy shrank by 9.5%. The respected economist and educator Solita Collas-Monsod, more popularly known as “Mareng Winnie,” provided a sobering assessment of what to expect in 2021. The Philippines, unfortunately, has fared the worst economically in comparison with its Asean neighbors. It has fared just as poorly in terms of its pandemic responsiveness. Nevertheless, while the World Bank, the IMF and the Philippines via the Department of Budget and Management have forecasted respectable rates of growth for 2021, GDP will fall short of 2019 levels. If we continue the trajectory of growth in 2022, then our economy may make a full recovery. Meanwhile, the Philippine government is confident that it will attain the forecasted GDP growth levels. Its recently released 2021 national budget shows a strong focus on infrastructure - echoing the administration’s “Build Build Build” mantra. The budget, however, reflected deep cuts in two crucial areas - health services and social welfare services.
III. What's in Store for 2021 and after? WB: 5.3% in 2021, 5.6% in 2022 IMF: 7.4% in 2021 DBCC: 6.5% to 7.5% in 2021 and 8% to 10% in 2022 *Projections for 2021
Prof. Winnie Monsod
What the Philippine Government says: "The FY 2021 budget serves as the heftiest stimulus package for the economy, thus enabling public spending to stimulate economic recovery. It is based on the sound fiscal policy of spending within means, on the right priorities, and with measurable results under a regime of a transparent, accountable, and participatory governance." LOVE, HAPPINESS AND ROMANCE
in the time of Covid The pandemic has changed not just the way we live, but the way we love and date. An article that appeared in the New York Times last May noted that "coronavirus has slowed things down. This pandemic has forced singles to return to more traditional wooing: getting to know someone before the kissing starts. I’m hopeful that these rediscovered and emerging modes of dating will give singles additional time to select a truly appropriate mate as well as enable romance and attachment to develop slowly — even flourish long term." Even couples who have been together for a long time may have found their relationships under unprecedented strain brought about by the lockdown. Others may have rediscovered the joys of intimacy under confinement. The Happiness Doctor, Lia Bernardo will guide you through resources you can use for creating your own heaven on earth even during these uncertain and stressful times

CUTTING OFF THE OXYGEN:
Can We Live without Social Media
Alex de Leon
The power of social media came into sharp focus during the US presidential elections, with the former president himself deplatformed from the likes of Twitter and Facebook. Statistical analyses since have shown that there has been a 73% decrease in disinformation since Trump was shut out of Twitter. So can we live without social media, and if not, how do we make social media work for us and society at large? How do we move forward from here?
Teddy Mapa
Social media experts Andrea Duldulao and Teddy Mapa, Regional Lead, Asia-Pacific for Instagram, Alexander de Leon, and psychologists Julian Luis N. Agustin and Mara Yusingco, discuss the pluses and pitfalls of social media.

THE COVID-19 VACCINES: TRUTH OR DARE
Vaccines save millions of lives each year. Vaccines work by training and preparing the body’s natural defences - the immune system - to recognize and fight off the viruses and bacteria they target. If the body is exposed to those diseasecausing germs later, the body is immediately ready to destroy them, preventing illness. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are currently more than 50 COVID-19 vaccine candidates in trials. Having lots of different vaccines in development increases the chances that there will be one or more successful vaccines that will be shown to be safe and efficacious for the intended prioritized populations. The Philippine government, as well as various municipalities, have announced their plans to purchase the various vaccines already on the market, the best known ones being Pfizer-BioNtech, Moderna, Astra Zeneca and the controversial Sinovac, and will prioritize the vaccination of people most at risk. These would be the frontline workers, the old and the infirm, to begin with. When it comes to COVID-19 vaccines, how do we separate fact from rumor? Join infectious diseases expert Dr. Benjamin Co as he discusses what we need to know about the vaccines that will soon become available in the Philippines.
