SECOND HALF I was in Madrid recently, and dropped by the Frida Kalho exhibition at Casa de Mexico, and quite literally stepped over these lines written by the trailblazing Mexican artist that had been stencilled into the stairs: “Nothing is absolute. Everything changes.” It’s a truism we all know, and live by, whether voluntarily or not. The pandemic was a brusque reminder that change can come in increments, or in a sudden, encompassing wave that we can do little about but adapt to as best we can. We’ve had our share of unexpected and consequential changes at Manila House, particularly during the pandemic. As we enter the second half of 2022, we are conscious of both what we’ve been able to accomplish under difficult circumstances, and the challenges we continue to face. This time two years ago, we were grappling with the prospect of closure. Today, we are pleased to report that we are seeing continuous and steady support and patronage from Members, increased demand for events, increased outdoor spaces to compensate for the smaller indoor club footprint, as well as beautiful new indoor spaces such as Rizal Room and Luna Lounge, not to mention the increasingly popular retail area. You may also have noticed our busier members events calendar, which now includes many in-person events. We will of course continue our webinar series, which remain popular, while adding more participatory events that deliver exclusive experiences for our Members, such as special wine and food tastings and the like. At this point, I must respectfully contradict Frida Kahlo’s assertion: what remains absolute is our commitment to you, our Members. Thank you, once more, on behalf of Management, Staff and the Board, for your unwavering support.

MADELENE PALCONIT Restaurant Supervisor
Loyalty and hard work pay off. Just ask Madelene Palconit, who started out at Manila House as a server, and is now a Restaurant Supervisor How did you start your career in food service? I’m a graduate of Hotel and Restaurant Management so being in the food industry was a logical career choice. Fortunately, after graduating I was hired at a cafe, and then after that, I had the opportunity to be with the F&B team of Manila House. What do you like most about being part of Manila House? Manila House is a big part of my career since I’ve been working here for five years already. What I like the most about my role is the challenges that come with serving the who’s who in different fields of industry in our country. I also like the experiences and lessons I’ve been getting while working here, for I know it’ll be useful for my career growth. What valuable lessons did you learn during pandemic? The pandemic is an eye-opener for us to take good care of ourselves physically and mentally. We should not take our health for granted, in order to be able to fight any virus that may exist. Who inspire you in your professional and personal life? My family inspires me in life. They are my source of motivation to do the best in what I do. They also remind me to be a good example for my siblings, as I am the eldest in the family. If you coud do anything and be a anywhere right now, and money and time is not an issue, what and where would that be? The place that comes to mind after reading the question is Siargao. I’ve been seeing a lot of videos about Siargao and I fell in love with it. Starting with the blue and clear ocean, the trees and peaceful environment, all of it is the reason behind it. So, If I have an opportunity to be there I would love to learn how to surf and enjoy the sea breeze.

UNVEIL THE SECRET OF EL NIDO: Experience Luxury in Simplicity at Lihim Resorts
MH | B E N E F I T S & P R I V I L E G E S
In the Philippine lingua franca, Lihim directly translates to secret. A secluded lagoon on Bacuit Bay reveals an expansive gradient of turquoise waters. Its surface sparkles like gems under rays of the sun. Some parts of the day, it is a looking glass that bares the storied underwater life of Palawan. The luxury of experiences is something that unfolds itself at Lihim. In this well-kept secret, tucked in the depths of paradise’s last frontier, senses go on a journey where myth, magic, and mystery come to life. The curator, mastermind, director, and grand host behind all these: nature. The exclusive experience in-property and on-location menu curated by Lihim Resorts promises to astonish. Built in the tradition of Philippine huts, accommodations echo the warmth and brand of hospitality distinct to the country and reflect a design sensibility deeply anchored on local culture and everyday life. All sixteen villas on the property offer unparalleled views of El Nido’s storied vistas. With the opulent touch of personal butler, the team offers bespoke services tailored to cater to guests’ desires – from in-room check-in to hanging clothes in your walk-in wardrobe to organizing private parties to planning all activities within and outside of the property and to addressing every need and qualm. HAZEL BERNADETTE GAPUZ answers the Manila House Questionnaire
“People have different ways of coping with changing times and environments, and we always have to be more understanding and kind to others.” What life lessons did you derive from the pandemic? People have different ways of coping with changing times and environments, and we always have to be more understanding and kind to others. What's the last movie/series you watched? I recently finished watching this Filipino series in Netflix called Legal Wives -- it was a good way to learn more about Muslim culture and practices! I've always wanted to learn more about the Muslim culture as we also have our Muslim brothers and sisters who are part of our community of influencers and content creators, and I want to understand their lives and traditions more to serve them better. What book is in your bookshelf that you've never read? I've read all the books on my shelves (yes!), but I think my answer for this would be The Ride of a Lifetime by Robert Iger. It was gifted to me by a friend. I got to read up to the first few chapters but haven't gotten to the end just yet. The book is about the lessons that Robert Iger learned from 15 years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company. What song can't you get out of your head? The honest answer to this is the song that the kids are dancing to in TikTok currently: ZOOM by Jessi! It's part of my job to be in TikTok to spot talented creators, so it's inevitable that trending TikTok songs will be an earworm to me. What would you like to see in the “next normal”? I think I'd like to see people being more people-centric in their lives: at home, at work, and whichever environments they are part of. I think the pandemic made people realize that everyone is one and the same, that we are more alike than different. Tell us what you do. I'm an entrepreneur and the current Chief Executive of Blogapalooza, the Philippines' premier influencer marketing company. We have the largest community of social media influencers and content creators in the country with more than 10,000 from the different regions across the entire Philippines. The work that I do at Blogapalooza is what fills my days.
What’s your favorite thing about Manila House? How Manila House adapted to the challenges brought about by the pandemic was really impressive. I really appreciate the value that the club has been giving to its Members even in the middle of the pandemic, until currently, where it aims to involve the Members through the different activities, insightful and helpful webinars, and other efforts. I like how the Club makes the Members feel heard and cared for.
How do you define success? I would define success as the ability to build people up such that they can become successful too. Success in the long term is having a positive impact on the lives of other people. On the daily, I would say success is having the freedom to live life on your own terms.
If you had to be quarantined (again) which country would you choose to be in? Australia is one of my favorite countries. I studied briefly in Sydney and have always loved their culture. If I had to be quarantined again, Australia would be one of the top countries I'd want to be in!

HISTORY AND RESPONSIBILITY On June 30, 2022, the 17th president of the Republic of the Philippines was sworn in, ushering a new era in our country’s history. A month before that, the academic and political analyst Richard Heydarian did a deep-dive into the cabinet appointees that had been announced. There was much speculation as to who would be part of the new cabinet, with several names being floated around. Among the key portfolios were those of finance, budget and economic planning as it was important to communicate to the international business community that getting the economy back on track after the pandemic and continuing the economic gains of the past decade and a half remain a priority. Heydarian discussed what we might expect from this presidency, historic in so many ways, stressing the challenges ahead as well as the unprecedented opportunities the new administration faces.
