THE SHOCK OF THE NEW And just like that, it’s June. It’s almost hard to believe that this time last year we were still facing one version or another of what seemed like endless lockdowns. Today, we move around with ease and freedom; it sometimes is a shock to see so many people out and about. At Manila House, it has been such a pleasure to see so many Members back and choosing to dine at the Club or celebrate their special events with us. In 1980, the art critic Robert Hughes presented a documentary series on modern art called “The Shock of the New.” The phrase has enduring currency: newness takes getting used to, but the change that comes with embracing newness is not always negative. The past two years of the pandemic have seen Manila House transformed, and we think the changes have, in the long run, been for the better. The beautiful Luna Lounge by IQOS is an example of one such transformation. If you didn’t know the fantastically talented designer Budji Layug was an artist, too, then brace yourself for the shock of the new as his paintings grace our walls this month. We also make a gentle return to in-person events to complement our webinars. Please turn to pages 23 to 27 for our upcoming virtual and face to face events. And Dads, do come over on Father’s Day, June 19. We’re putting out all the stops to make this day a special one with your family.
HOW TO SIGN UP Manila House Rewards is easy and convenient to access. The attached hyperlink https://manila-house.eber.co takes you to the registration/login page. You will be able to log in to your account using the primary email or mobile number connected to your Club membership.

JOSE ARCILLA
President and General Manager He's the captain who steers the Club with steady hands, pandemic or not. Always calm and compassionate, Jose Arcilla keeps staff and shareholders grounded. Looking back, what was it about Manila House that made you take the job? The timing was perfect. I was returning to Manila after working some years in the Maldives managing a resort property and I felt excited about the prospect of taking on a very “challenging” job in a high profile organization with a very impressive membership roster. What was your most challenging moment during the pandemic as GM of the Club? How to balance being an inspirational and comforting leader while “fighting” to preserve business continuity. As a leader, I have to always project calm and assuredness while dealing with an overwhelming uncertainty, as well as with the anxieties of employees who were mentally, emotionally and physically distracted by the crisis. I’m just so glad and thankful we survived. Many employees consider you a father figure. What advice or wisdom can you impart to them? Business is a team sport, and every employee is important to the success of the Company. Be good, grateful and humble in whatever role you play and to always remember that it’s more important to be kind than to be right. How do you spend quality time with your kids? Running errands together. I learned that kids can learn a lot doing errands with their parents. We’re spending time outside of the house (which I think is good) and if there’s shopping to be done, I get to find out more about my kids’ tastes and preferences. Besides, it is more fun to do errands together than alone. What are you most proud of as a father? All three of my children are girls (nothing to complain about) and they are all caring, respectful and kind.

UNVEIL THE SECRET OF EL NIDO: Experience Luxury in Simplicity at Lihim Resorts
MH | B E N E F I T S & P R I V I L E G E S
In the Philippine lingua franca, Lihim directly translates to secret. A secluded lagoon on Bacuit Bay reveals an expansive gradient of turquoise waters. Its surface sparkles like gems under rays of the sun. Some parts of the day, it is a looking glass that bares the storied underwater life of Palawan. The luxury of experiences is something that unfolds itself at Lihim. In this well-kept secret, tucked in the depths of paradise’s last frontier, senses go on a journey where myth, magic, and mystery come to life. The curator, mastermind, director, and grand host behind all these: nature. The exclusive experience in-property and on-location menu curated by Lihim Resorts promises to astonish. Built in the tradition of Philippine huts, accommodations echo the warmth and brand of hospitality distinct to the country and reflect a design sensibility deeply anchored on local culture and everyday life. All sixteen villas on the property offer unparalleled views of El Nido’s storied vistas. With the opulent touch of personal butler, the team offers bespoke services tailored to cater to guests’ desires – from in-room check-in to hanging clothes in your walk-in wardrobe to organizing private parties to planning all activities within and outside of the property and to addressing every need and qualm. BEST DAD EVER
Our Junior Members share the best thing about their dads. Happy Father's Day to the best dads ever!
There are many best things about my Dad, but the way he has always believed in me, supported me, guided me, and loved me unconditionally is one of my favorites. Without my Dad’s wisdom and guidance, I’d be lost. The best thing about my dad is his sense of humor. Only a few get to truly appreciate it, but I think it’s awesome. There’s never a dull moment with my father. - Brian Daniel
Llamanzares
The best thing about Dad is: He is a fantastic storyteller. Our family dinners are always full of laughter and intrigue!
- Viandrei Nicole Cuevas
17
My Dad is very humble. He keeps on thriving just to give us, five siblings, a beautiful future. He would rather invest his money to buy land and property that will increase in value in the next few years than spend on himself. He and my mom never failed to provide for our family. I learned a lot of things from him. No matter the circumstances, I know I can always count on him. My Dad taught me how to be strong and kind. He always makes me feel special. Whenever I feel like the world has turned its back on me, there is always one person who will never turn his back at me, and that’s my father. No matter how old I get, I will never stop needing him. I’m super grateful that I have him as my dad. - Brandon Reluao
The best thing about my dad is his unending love and care for the whole family. He has always been there to support what we are interested to do and gives us the strength and wisdom to guide us in our everyday life. We are truly fortunate to have a strong and loving father like him. - Miguel Tan

answers the Manila House Questionnaire
"Success is knowing that what you are doing is helping you and others to
have a better, happier, healthier and glowing life."
Tell us what you do. I’m the president of Le Meur, and an entrepreneur advocate who loves helping Filipinos achieve their life goals with the help of French technology aesthetics. I want to use my voice, knowledge and experiences when it comes to lifestyle and beauty. As an empowered woman, I’m not just passion; I pursue it with purpose. I also love to travel and discover different cultures! How do you define success? For me, success is an evolving thing, and it happens when you identify, live out your true purpose and you feel fulfilled with the result. One of my definitions of success will always be about making a difference in this world, and other people’s lives. Success is knowing that what you are doing is helping you and others to have a better, happier, healthier and glowing life. What life lessons did you derive from the pandemic? Amid the chaos, changes, and profound losses of 2020, I learned life lessons and found opportunities for Le Meur Aesthetics and Lemeur Skin. One of the things that I learned was the importance of leveraging your network by discussing and connecting to people with their expertise. What's the last movie/series you watched? The last movie I watched was the Wall Street. What book is in your bookshelf that you've never read? I really hope I have the time to read it… The book is called Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan. What song can't you get out of your head? Recently it’s Photograph by Boyce Avenue and Bea Miller. What would you like to see in the “next normal”? I believe that the next normal would be more technologydriven which allows people to live smarter, safer and give more people a productive live, especially in such key areas as health and beauty care, education and community living. What’s your favorite thing about Manila House? I love its art, private ambiance, the exclusivity and sense of curiosity. If you had to be quarantined (again) which country would you choose to be in? It will definitely be Monaco, it is very unique and there are many things to do and see! Sunsets are magical, all viewpoints are beautiful during the day, and magnificent in the evening. 18

CLEARING THE AIR
Between the pandemic and the elections, we’ve had quite an intense couple of years. It’s now time to take a deep breath and decompress – to cleanse ourselves in a way, from negativity and stress and regain a sense of calm and equilibrium. Guiding us through this process were the Happiness Doctor, Lia Bernardo, and Ces Drilon, the award winning broadcast journalist and founder of a line of natural beauty called Provenciana, whose Cecilia Smudge Sticks served as a springboard for a session about self-nurturing and self-love.
