IN THE HOUSE NOVEMBER 2022

SAYING GRACE

November is that strange month that sees the year hurtling towards the Christmas holidays. We approach November slightly frantic but also somewhat confident that there’s still time to plan year-end celebrations, prepare Christmas lists and get all our greeting cards and gifts sorted. But the pace still picks up as our calendars fill up with a seemingly nonstop whirl of events. And then Thanksgiving rolls around and gives us pause, reminding us all to take a deep breath, savor the moments we have with family and friends and be thankful for all that we have.

In this not-quite-post-Covid era, there is so much to be thankful for, the easing of mask restrictions indoors and out being one such thing. After a long season of loss and isolation for many families, to be able to celebrate together with a greater sense of security and protection against Covid is truly a blessing. To make Thanksgiving more meaningful, we offer an abundant feast which includes a traditional turkey and all the trimmings, that you can enjoy in the Club, or in the comfort of your own home. Please turn to pages 10-12 for details.

Here at Manila House, to be operating at almost full capacity every evening is indeed a blessing for which we are deeply grateful, and we could not do this without the steadfast support of our Members.

Thank you.

MAICA LUNAR Administrative Assistant

Call her a Multitasker. Maica Lunar has served in different departments since the start of the pandemic, cheerfully filling in wherever she's needed. If that’s not dedication, we don’t know what is.

Tell us about your career arc at Manila House?

I started here in 2021, when businesses were getting back to the “new normal”. I was hired as part of the Human Resources Department then since my expertise was in HR. During the pandemic, all of us needed to be flexible and help each other as needed around the Club, resulting in changes to our job functions. At one point, I was assigned to Sales as well as Finance. This professional journey helped me learn more and explore beyond the box that was my expertise.

Who do you look up to, professionally and personally?

Professionally, I admire and respect our President, Mr. Jose Arcilla. I am so amazed at how he was able to manage and handle the stressful situations the Club faced during the pandemic. He also guides us well and is like a father to all of us.

Personally, I look up to my mom as the closest person to my heart and my best adviser - I always long for her advice and guidance. She equipped me well with wisdom and learnings on how to live life positively and how to become a nice person. She taught me how to be kind, generous, loving and most especially, God-fearing.

What is the best advice you've ever received?

Don't dwell on the past and don't daydream about the future. Concentrate on showing up fully in the present moment.

If you could go back in time, is there anything you want to change? Why or why not?

I won't change anything in the past because those bad and good experiences that I encountered molded me into who I am today.

My favorite Manila House dish is... Kimchi Rice!

Thanksgiving Turkey or Roast Ham? Thanksgiving Turkey!

I am most thankful for… slowly letting myself be vulnerable. I'm more resilient and brave to truly embrace who I am and how I really feel.

UNVEIL THE SECRET OF EL NIDO: Experience Luxury in Simplicity at Lihim Resorts

In the Philippine lingua franca, Lihim directly translates to secret.

A secluded lagoon on Bacuit Bay reveals an expansive gradient of turquoise waters. Its surface sparkles like gems under rays of the sun. Some parts of the day, it is a looking glass that bares the storied underwater life of Palawan.

The luxury of experiences is something that unfolds itself at Lihim. In this well-kept secret, tucked in the depths of paradise’s last frontier, senses go on a journey where myth, magic, and mystery come to life. The curator, mastermind, director, and grand host behind all these: nature.

The exclusive experience in-property and on-location menu curated by Lihim Resorts promises to astonish.

Built in the tradition of Philippine huts, accommodations echo the warmth and brand of hospitality distinct to the country and reflect a design sensibility deeply anchored on local culture and everyday life. All sixteen villas on the property offer unparalleled views of El Nido’s storied vistas. With the opulent touch of personal butler, the team offers bespoke services tailored to cater to guests’ desires – from in-room check-in to hanging clothes in your walk-in wardrobe to organizing private parties to planning all activities within and outside of the property and to addressing every need and qualm.

Tell us what you do

I’m involved in several start-ups—- I’m the co-founder of Budget Bodega, a warehousing, moving and storage company; Holosecure, an IT solution company specializing in document storage and ID solutions for companies; and I’m also a partner in several fitness/martial arts gyms (Fitlab, Fight Factory Manila, Project Lifestyle Manila). I also dabble in several other businesses among other things.

How do you define success?

I define success as when someone has found happiness and fulfillment. Once a person is happy, regardless of what it is they do they have a sense of achievement that continues to stoke their motivation. It could be a project they have finished and they are truly happy or something they made with their own passion and hard work. That is the true meaning of success.

What life lessons did you derive from the pandemic?

There is a silver lining in everything. I’m not that religious but I believe in this: “God will never throw a problem in your life that you can’t handle. No matter how hard it may be.“

What’s the last movie/series you watched?

For tv series, it’s the House of Dragons. The last movie I watched, for the nth time, is Definitely Maybe.

What book is on your bookshelf but you’ve never read? Many Lives, Many Masters; haven’t gotten around to this one yet but looking to make time for it.

What song can’t you get out of your head? High by Lighthouse

What would you like to see in the “next normal?”

Traveling cheaper LOL! I enjoy traveling because it gives me a new perspective and inspiration for ideas to bring back home.

What’s your favorite thing about Manila House?

The aesthetics, feel, atmosphere, and attention to detail of the place.

If you had to be quarantined (again) which country would you choose to be in? Philippines again. I’d rather be quarantined with my friends and family!

IBERIAN DREAMS

It’s no surprise that Spain and Portugal are two of the most popular destinations for Filipinos looking for residency or second citizenship in an EU country. Apart from the cultural affinities we share with our Spanish and Portuguese cousins – the language, the food, the religion –there are the great weather and high quality of life. Telling us more about the Golden Visa and how to obtain it at a recent webinar were Antonio Viñal of AVCO Legal and Alfredo Roca of Golden Visa Consulting.

Viñal went through the procedural and legal steps involved in obtaining residency and eventually, citizenship, while Roca, who was a long-time resident of the Philippines, presented several desirable properties for investment in Spain and Portugal. He offered properties outside of the key cities of Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon, suggesting premium developments in Valencia, Bilbao, Sotogrande and the Algarve.
