THE GREAT UNMASKING
Perhaps one of the most welcome bits of news at a time of great turmoil around the world is the lifting of restrictions on mask usage whilst outdoors. Public health experts have long held that masks need not be worn outdoors as long as people observe safe social distancing; the wearing of masks was especially cumbersome for those who sought to engage in exercise in the open air, such as runners and cyclists, and even those who just wanted to enjoy walking through the city at a time when it seemed pollution levels had decreased.
As life returns to normal - whichever way we choose to define “normal" these days - being able to move freely outdoors without masks is undoubtedly a logical step. In other parts of the world, normal has come to mean no Covid restrictions at all, which often engenders an initial sense of trepidation in a traveller from the Philippines stepping foot for the first time since early 2020 in, say, Madrid or London, where almost no one wears a mask, much less carries hand sanitizer with them, even when packed into a lift or a subway car. People there seem to have accepted that Covid is a fact they have to live with, much like the common cold or the flu. In fact, nine times out of ten, the only ones wearing masks on public transport are Asians, myself included!
The perils have of the pandemic have not completely disappeared, however. There are warnings that another wave is upon us, stronger than the relatively mild omicron variant many have caught and recovered from, some for the second or third time, with apparently few long-lasting effects. For us, this means, apart from getting the booster, that mask-wearing indoors is likely to continue.
I can live with that.

DENMARK LOUIE HILARIO
Bartender
With a natural thirst for knowledge and experience, Manila House Bartender Denmark Louie Hilario shares how he got into the service industry, and a bit of Bartending 101.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221004054241-962d6f565d18a391d73d5326cd1dcf23/v1/e264d95f62da458b79c410cd26200e48.jpeg)
What made you decide to work in the F&B service industry?
I wanted to work in the F&B industry because bartending is one of the things I enjoy doing, and I know it will open up a lot of opportunities for someone like me. I also want to learn new skills and apply being creative in what I do.
What is the proudest moment in your career?
I think the proudest moment in my career is doing what I do here in Manila House right now. Compared to my previous jobs, this is the best place I've worked in, and it's an honor to be part of the Club.
If you could serve any famous person, who would it be?
As a fan of Philippine cinema, any Filipino celebrity! It's always a good experience to serve famous people here at the Club.
What are some qualities a good bartender must have?
Being a bartender, the obvious one is mastery of different spirits and classic drinks. Hygiene and organization are also very important. Another good quality of a bartender is situational awareness --- you have to be constantly alert and monitor what's happening around you to be able to deliver good customer service.
What personal or professional goals do you want to achieve in 5 years?
In five years, I want to see myself grow more as a bartender and gain skills and knowledge through experience. I wat to grab any opportunity to make it happen, and hopefully I can also share what I learned with others.

How do you define success?
For me, success should not be judged by the amount of material wealth you have, but rather by the contentment and happiness in your chosen endeavor and your relationship with family and friends.

What life lessons did you derive from the pandemic?
In this world, everything is temporary. You just have to make the most of your time creating memories with your loved ones, family, relatives, and friends.
What’s the last movie/series you watched?
The latest movies that I watched were Marry Me and I Used to be Famous, both on Netflix. I like the two movies since they have the same moral lesson: money can’t buy everything. The most important thing in life is to pursue what you truly want and what makes you genuinely happy.
What book is on your bookshelf but you’ve never read? The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again) which I bought from the Whitney Museum several years ago, published by the Yale University Press. It tackles the life and art of Andy Warhol who is one of the most iconic and controversial figures in Modern Art.
What song can’t you get out of your head?
What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. Despite the problems besetting the country and the world, we should still appreciate what we have. We need to take care of our environment since this is the only place we live in.
What would you like to see in the “next normal?” In the next normal, I would want to see people be more caring and loving and mindful of the community and not only of themselves.
What’s your favorite thing about Manila House? The ambiance, interior design, the food, and especially the staff who always make sure that the individual needs of its members are catered to. It is also strategically located in BGC which makes it a convenient choice for business meetings and get-togethers.
If you had to be quarantined (again) which country would you choose to be in?
I hope it will not happen again, but if it ever does, I would prefer to be quarantined in Faroe Islands. First, its location is ideal since it's isolated from the rest of the world. The nearest countries are Norway, Iceland, and Scotland. Secondly, there are only 54,000 people living there, so the rate of infection should probably be lower given that they don’t live too near to each other. I also learned that there is a Filipino community there, so it makes me feel at ease that I will not be a total stranger there.

You don’t need to be a Russian oligarch to seek citizenship or residency via investment in Portugal under the country’s popular Golden Visa scheme. An increasingly popular destination for many Filipino families considering a second passport, the Golden Visa scheme, as Vicky MagpantayLuis, President of Golden Visa Centrale, discussed in a recent webinar, is affordable and extremely attractive. Joining her were Rosalia Torres, Head of Sales and International Markets at Arish Capital Partners, Rakesh Majithia, Chief Investment Officer at Arish Capital Partners, and Atty. Andre Miranda, Founder and Managing Partner at Pinto Ribiero Advogados, who explained the requirements, procedures, investment opportunities - not to mention the benefits of living - in the sunny European country.

BREAKING FREE FROM COLONIALISM
Manila House and Asia Society Philippines, together with Ateneo De Manila University’s Departnment of History of the School of Social Sciences, presented "The Philippines and Asia at the turn of the 20th Century," supported by the College of Liberal Arts, De La Salle University; Institute of Arts and Sciences, Far Eastern University; and the Asian Studies Society, University of Santo Tomas.

The program featured Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge Nicole CuUnjieng Aboitiz, Ph.D. with Japan Foundation Research Fellow from Hitotsubashi University, Karl Ian Uy Cheng Chua, Ph.D., as moderator. Dr. CuUnjieng Aboitiz’s presentation 'The idea of Asia in turn-of-the-twentieth-century Filipino political thought and action’ underscored how the 20th century witnessed how colonialism plagued Southeast Asia and how its nations tried to free themselves from it. Revolutions and uprisings were starting to brew amongst these countries, and the Philippines was at the forefront of this phenomenon.
Dr. CuUnjieng Aboitiz, Ph.D. challenged the Western-dominated historiography of how the 1896 Philippine Revolution came to be. "The historical literature treats the Philippine revolution as if it happened in a different corner of the world entirely.” She further expresses how Asianism is present in the foundation of the Philippine nation and the history of its revolution.
Dr. CuUnjieng Aboitiz’s presentation evokes intellectual streams of Asia and the Philippines and how they wove into each other to form the Filipino nation. Her social imagination and innovation push us to rethink and resolve how we perceive and interpret Philippine and Asian history. May these renewed perceptions and thoughts then influence how we plan to change our society today.
In closing the program, Bambina Olivares reiterated the importance of our continuous search for the Filipino identity, in the ideological and political sense.
