All hail the arrival of September! In the northern hemisphere, the month of September heralds the coming of autumn, while in the south, it’s finally spring. In the Philippines, we all know what September brings: it’s the start of the “ber” months, which means the Christmas season has begun and Christmas carols can now be played over the airwaves and in malls throughout the country. It’s a little too early for us at Manila House to flood our playlist with Jingle Bells, but we do feel the subtle change in the air, and note how everyone seems to be getting into the festive spirit. We’re certainly doing our bit by hosting a number of exciting alcohol and food pairings, for what is a celebration without libations and gastronomic indulgences? We start by highlighting that well-loved combination of meat and wines, in particular, the best of Australia, courtesy of Berton Vineyard and Jack’s Creek. To book your place at this September 13 event, please turn to page 30. Fine Scotch whisky pairs nicely with food, too, as you’ll discover at our special Glenlivet masterclass with Brand Ambassador Owen Roberts, who teamed up with our Executive Chef Piya Suthasiri to come up with a delightful menu to complement the famous spirits. That’s happening on September 22. September also hits us with a whiff of nostalgia, courtesy of that unforgettable upbeat anthem by Earth, Wind & Fire. Go down memory lane with us and relive the 90sgranted, a decade after the group’s monster hit was released - in a fun trivia night with questions centered around everything retro! That’s on September 15 at Avenue Bar. Bring it on, September! We’re ready for you!

I’m a very shy type of person and sometimes I doubt myself, so if I’m given a chance to go back, I will encourage myself more, have more self-confidence, and be more adventurous in life.
Actually, my older sister is a BS Accountancy graduate like me, and during her college days she inspired me to take the same program as this provides more opportunities after graduation. Looking back, I realized, I never dreamed of a specific course to take. I just wanted to be a simple office girl who worked with passion for her employer. But reality taught me differently. Taking up this five-year course was not an accident. Moreover, I can also attest that accounting is about more than just numbers.

If you could travel through time, what would you tell your younger self?
In what way did the pandemic affect your role in Manila House? The pandemic put everyone at risk, especially those working in the food and restaurant industry. Due to government-implemented lockdowns, many restaurants, like our Manila House F&B outlets, needed to comply, and we had to temporarily close our dine-in facilities. Also, to keep the Club going, the management had to make the very hard decision to retrench some employees. Since the number of employees was reduced, we had to own other responsibilities and be more flexible.

You don’t need to be a Russian oligarch to seek citizenship or residency via investment in Portugal under the country’s popular Golden Visa scheme. An increasingly popular destination for many Filipino families considering a second passport, the Golden Visa scheme, as Vicky MagpantayLuis, President of Golden Visa Centrale, discussed in a recent webinar, is affordable and extremely attractive. Joining her were Rosalia Torres, Head of Sales and International Markets at Arish Capital Partners, Rakesh Majithia, Chief Investment Officer at Arish Capital Partners and Laura Tique, Associate Lawyer at Pinto Ribiero Advogados, who explained the requirements, procedures, investment opportunities - not to mention the benefits of living - in the sunny European country.
