Brave New World

W

hile we’re all still recovering from our holiday hangover, the new year has descended upon us. Twenty years into the 21st century, we are not living in the space-age world imagined by The Jetsons and sci-fi movies that had us commuting via interplanetary taxis from Earth to Mars and beyond. To some, it might seem as if life here on earth, currently beset by a grave climate crisis and the rise of autocratic governments, has not really made much progress. Which has made many people anxious about future, even if, in the minds of many, 2020 was the magic number that heralded the future. How fitting, then, that Pantone has chosen as 2020’s color of the year a shade New York magazine called “anti-anxiety blue.” In choosing Classic Blue as the color of 2020, a spokesperson from the Pantone Color Institute explained that the color “had to be emblematic of a global mood.” Recalling the Y2K debacle in 1999, “everybody was nervous… some of us were excited, some were shaky. ‘Is the world going to blow up?’” Classic Blue is a color we can also identify with. Solid, without being overpowering, it evokes calm, confidence and connection. “This blue is not taking you into the mystery of what lies ahead. Instead it speaks to our need for a stable and dependable foundation.”

Get to Know: Marc Dela Cruz

Executive Chef Marc dela Cruz can certainly take the heat, and keeps his cool amidst the frenzy of the kitchen What makes you passionate about working in the kitchen? How do you motivate your team? Honestly it’s not easy not to be pessimistic with everyday occurrences when your life is in the kitchen. At any moment, the unpredictable can happen. But it gives me the most satisfying feeling when I lead my team to execute great service. I also appreciate every ingredient I work with and love making something awesome out of it. How do you conceptualize your dishes? I try to visualize what my dish might look like on the plate. I always consider how the diner might eat my food. It's important to get the right amount of every component of the dish: the right portion, the right sequence of the explosion of flavors on the palate and the right quality. Which original dish of yours are you most proud of? No favorites and there are countless dishes! Hahahaha! Because I’m always proud of all the dishes I’ve created; I put myself into all my dishes all the time. Marc Dela Cruz

What’s the perfect day off for you? Monday for sure. No need to be trapped in Monday madness. Everybody is rushing and hustlin' and I’ll be strolling at the mall.

My dream kitchen would have: A griddle, high-pressure stove and roasting oven. I'd like industrial-grade kitchen equipment

Neal Oshima explores the inner life of shells in his new exhibition

MH | I N T E R V I E W

Neal Oshima behind the lens

Neal Oshima A commercial, editorial and fine art photographer, Neal Oshima was born in the United States but has called the Philippines his home for many decades. His body of work is extensive, and he has trained his eye on a broad range of subject matter, from food to indigenous tribes, to clothing. He has exhibited at prestigious galleries here and abroad; in 2015 his photographs of articles of clothing, striking for their sheer, ethereal quality, were shown at a group exhibition, They are my documents, at sepiaEye Gallery in Soho, New York. This month he presents NEAL OSHIMA: SHADOWS at Manila House, an exhibition that continues his exploration of non-traditional photographic methods as he turns his attention to shells 6

MH | I N T E R V I E W

You’ve been a photographer for most of your adult life. How did photography become your vocation and metier? Which photographers or artists have influenced your work? It started in college. I went to Wesleyan University expecting to major in architecture but took an introduction to photography course taught by a National Geographic photographer, Charles Steinhacker. He was an anomaly at Nat Geo in that he used a large-format view camera rather the usual 35mm SLR, but he revealed the vast possibilities of the medium, and I was hooked. Later in my undergraduate years, I worked as an archeologist for the Bishop Museum in Honolulu and ended up as their field photographer,

7

documenting excavations throughout the Hawaiian archipelago and Marlon Brando’s Tahitian atoll, Tetiaroa, now a $1000-a-day resort. I caught the photography/travel bug.

“I learned that the real beauty of a photograph was in the layers of meaning beneath its surface.” I took an MFA at San Francisco State University (now UCSF) where I was fortunate to take a course, Visual Anthropology, from John Collier, who wrote the pioneering book of the same name. From Collier I learned that the real beauty of a photograph was in the layers of meaning beneath its surface.

Robert Heineken, the iconoclastic photographer who led the graduate program at UCLA, was a huge influence on my work. I would visit him every semester to get advice, often in the form of an esthetic bonk on the head! Decades of commercial and fashion photography taught me discipline and technique and that I would rather be doing art than commerce. Tell us a bit about your creative process. Do you tend to work with a theme or show in mind, or do you capture random moments and look for a theme running through the photographs? What camera are you partial to? What do you find yourself drawn to these days in terms of photographic subjects?

This page and next, shells take on a spectral quality

MH | I N T E R V I E W

Digital photography is easy and convenient but not very challenging. When I take a digital photograph I can see exactly what it looks like. I get more excited imagining how a certain object's shadow might appear, so I make a photogram, coating paper with light-sensitive emulsions to record its shadow-image. Or I wonder what the internal structure of a seashell looks like so I x-ray it. Or I take some photographs, grind them up into pulp and make them into a sheet of paper to see if thay bear any traces of their origin. So a lot of my personal work is driven by curiosity: I get an idea and wonder what it will look like as an image.

Have any of your children expressed an interest in photography? I’m proud to say that all of my kids are in the arts. Mika, the eldest, went to Pratt but carefully avoided photography. She is a full-time author and illustrator of children books in NYC. Check out her work on www.mikasongdraws.com. Alexis, the younger daughter, was accepted by RISD (Rhode Island School if Design), one of the hardest arts schools to get into, but wisely chose to study biology at Imperial College of London. Nevertheless she takes photographs and we collaborate on art projects, art fairs, workshops and will do a piece together with me for the 2020 Biwako Biennale in Kyoto.

My stepson, Stephan, is a creative practitioner of the culinary arts and has just opened an amazing restaurant called Metiz. Even the youngest, Dylan, is studying to be wizard of art of computer programming in Edinburgh, Scotland. What do you like to do when you’re not behind the lens? I brew beer and sake. Also I make and age cheese. N EAL OS H I MA: S HAD OWS WEDNESDAY | JANUARY 15 6PM The exhibition runs until February 16, 2020 8

Are cryptocurrencies still relevant? Will we all eventually move to a cashless society? A leading fintech startup conducts an educational session on what Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are all about and why we should still pay attention to them

F

or many people, Bitcoin and the whole concept of Cryptocurrency remain a vague and inscrutable matter, not to mention a controversial and volatile form of tender. Even the origins of Bitcoin, the bestknown cryptocurrency which was invented in 2008, are mysteriously concealed behind the name of the founder Satoshi Nakamoto, who may be one person or a group of people. Bitcoin became operational in 2009 when its source code was released as open-source software. The first transaction took place between Nakamoto and an early adopter of bitcoin in January 2009. The first real-world transaction happened in 2010 when a bitcoin miner bought two pizzas from a Papa John's in Florida for 10,000 bitcoins. Other cryptocurrencies followed, such as Ethereum and Monero, can be exchanged for other currencies, products, and services. Briefly put, a cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that is secured by cryptography, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or double-spend. Many cryptocurrencies are decentralized networks based on blockchain technology—a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers.
