On Show White Abyss

2018 was rewarding in so many ways, but it was not without its difficulties. We’d like to think the positive far outweighs the negative, and indeed, it has been a year of so many highs, and, let’s be honest, not a few controversies. Nevertheless, we promise to keep listening to you, our Members, in order to constantly sharpen our service and further elevate our food offer and events program. Our Filipino cuisine has found new fans, we are delighted to tell you, in Hollywood. Recently we organized a Filipino dinner for Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, who arrived with his co-star Amber Heard, director James Wan, and his Warner Brothers family. It was a stealth operation, to say the least, as we needed to guarantee complete privacy for the Hollywood star, who wanted to relax and unwind, listen to good music and eat after a long day of official promotional appearances in Manila without the glare of cameras or the clamor of fans. Jason, along with the rest of the team clearly felt at home in Manila House, letting his hair down (pun intended) and posting about their night at Manila House on their Instagram stories. What was most heartening about that night aside from the unexpected (and unsolicited) selfie Jason himself took with me - was the fact that everyone enjoyed the chill vibe at Anahaw, ate the food with gusto, and left Manila House in high spirits. Which is the way we want everyone to feel when they come to Club. At ease, at home, content.

Get to Know: Melchor Discipulo The Grill's Restaurant Manager likes his steak medium rare, but in terms of job performance, he always goes for well done. As a brand new year begins, Melchor is excited to take The Grill to new heights, with its new menu and improved service. How did your previous work experience prepare you for your current position at The Grill?

Are you a medium rare, medium or well done kind of man when it comes to steak?

I had my share of working at a steakhouse at my previous jobs, both local and international. The moment I heard that I’d be heading The Grill I got really excited, I felt challenged thinking of how every detail would impact our guests' dining experience, on a positive scale that is.

I really prefer the steak prepared medium rare as it gives it much tenderness and juiciness. It also gives ample time for the marbling of the steak to dissolve, giving the meat more of that buttery taste.

What makes The Grill different from the other restaurants at Manila House? Aside from being a fine dining outlet of Manila House wherein Members get to share their stories, the outlet also has its own stories to share - on its walls. It may look like a New York-style steakhouse but its heart is certainly Filipino. What do you recommend most often to Members dining at The Grill? For starters, I would recommend our Grilled Caesar Salad to open up the appetite, then definitely the Tomahawk for the main course. It might be a challenge to finish it by yourself, but it’s great to or share it with friends, and it does complete the dining experience. Do choose as the sides the truffle sauce and creamed spinach and it’s a done deal.

How do you handle customers who say the steak was either too rare or too well-done? If the steak was prepared too rare I would suggest that it be cooked more; however if the steak comes out too cooked I would have it replaced in accordance to the preferred temperature of our guest because not enjoying the food at all should not be part of the dining experience. What are you looking forward to most in 2019? I’m looking forward to a wonderful 2019 as we take to a higher level the dining experience of our members with the selections of what The Grill has to offer. Rest assured that we are only getting started.

Mind + Medicine A new approach to wellness combines medical science and mindfulness, as Dr. Rex Gloria and Florian Wolf explain in an exclusive talk at Manila House on January 24

P

eople often say, “Listen to your body.” Or, similarly, we believe, “In our bodies we trust.” Is there truth in this adage? How should we listen to our body? Why should we trust in the signals of our body?

In tandem, Florian Wolf introduces the latest Integral Strategies to Develop One’s Life, while providing tips and results from his coaching work. His goal is the neuroscientific approach for enabling « the change and the doing » within us, based on a Mindful Inner Attitude. Florian Wolf is CEO of YourPrevention™, a German top brand in Preventive Medicine, with a worldwide operating network of researchers, doctors, and coaches. Florian also performs in triathlon events – just for the fun of it! His challenge is being mindful in everyday life.

Let’s face the status quo: among employees, there is a significant increase in stress associated symptoms. This reality has Dr. Rex Gloria produced an underestimated impact on employee’s productivity and absence, his social behavior and happiness. Today’s biggest risk in an employee’s life are stress associated changes in energy level, mood, mental state and organ health.

Dr. Rex Gloria, a surgeon by background, shifted his medical career in 2009, when he pioneered the first Preventive Medicine Clinic in Manila. Schooled in Belgium and Germany, he has since gained a solid network of clients over the years, incorporating Functional and Integrative theories in his practice. Outside of his busy schedule, Dr. Rex is an avid photographer through all his unique travel destinations. Florian Wolf

"From a better me to a better we." YourPrevention™ offers a holistic occupational health strategy with a systemic perspective/path on this integral pattern of symptoms. What if mindfulness were not just another tool but an inner attitude leading us into self-effectiveness - the « doing »? What if being mindful is meant to be the luxury of the next decade, which we are only beginning to discover today? What if we can be actually enabled to achieve our own health goals?

Medical Science and Mindfulness: Developing our inner attitude for becoming self-efficient and resilient Thursday, January 24 Intramuros Ballroom 5:00 pm

Dr. Rex Gloria introduces the latest insights and tools from Integral Scientific Stress Research. Being an expert in stress management for high performing individuals and organizations, Dr. Rex combines the data driven approach with behavioral skills for the development of the self.

White of Mine 1, Oil on cardboard, 200 x 70cm

White Abyss The award-winning artist Maria Pavlovska, who was born in Skopje, Macedonia and exhibits widely in the United States, most recently with Mana Contemporary and Gary Lichtenstein in New York, makes her Manila debut with White of Mine II, a series of black-and-white paintings

Maria at her studio at Mana Contemporary- NY, working on A Reaction series

The painting is a battlefield where light and darkness fight and the result is unpredictable, a place where matter is re-created, where the matter suffers in the fire of creation, where all the forms are born, a place without optical and tactile reality, when the figural form summoned from abyss has not yet emerged on the surface of the painting. The basis of the painting is the darkness: the abyss of the body, the abyss of the subconscious , a world abyss where everything begins and everything ends. So, one should enter inside and behind the painting, into the living and moving tissue, into the body of the painting that has not an appropriate form, but only contains the source of the chromatic substance, into the painting that is a space of incubation of all forms, the pre-ancient figurality, the pre-pictoriality and gestural pre-matrix. And that is what Plato refers to as choir:

M

aria Pavlovska is a painter. For her the painting is a prayer of two worlds: light and dark, black and white, full and empty, yes and no‌ She knows that painting is poetry (poesis is all that makes it possible for something to turn from nonbeing into a being). She stands before the worls as it is the first day of creation, at the beginning when darkness rules. In front of her is the endless space without motion. A gesture, an act of will is necessary to start the creation. The gesture leaves a trace behind, it carries in itself the power of the lightning that releases the light. 8

ON SHOW

A Reaction - series, Black & White diaries 2, Oil on cardboard, 300 x 210cm

pre-arch-matrix, a womb where the creative hysteria enables the creation. It is the original pre-creating space and it includes unlimited possibilities of creation. This is where life is pre-created again. In the paintings of Maria Pavlovska one can see the lightning of the creation. We again stand in the dark sea. Somewhere in the distance a dim light is discerned. Lightning inflames the waters and the flame spreads across the endless plane of the world. - Emil Aleksiev Senior Curator at the Museum of the City of Skopje WHITE OF MINE II Opens January 21 and runs until February 18 White of Mine 7, Oil on canvas, 100 x 70cm

IN TERVIEW

Ria Prieto Call her a haute hippie or a free spirit, but Ria Prieto is social media-savvy and determined to take her website riarecommends.com to the next level: a multimedia lifestyle empire You’ve had a bit of a career change in the last few years. Why the shift to multimedia content creator and digital fashion influencer from traditional publishing? This change to be more active online was primarily brought about by this realization: People get their information in so many new platforms so if I don't evolve I will be left behind. I've made a career looking for what's the best and newest in fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. I love telling stories that help you put together your next look or give inspiration, whether it be in your job or something as simple as redecorating your living room. These stories and scoops are now all on Instagram. Every other brand has an online identity so I had to adapt.

Ria Prieto

they're doing is wrong. I actually follow and enjoy their feeds. Everyone is free to follow and unfollow at any given time.

I also feel that in this career, you must be ahead. With my website, I'm trying to do something new. In a sea of Instagram likes and Facebook trending stories, who can you really trust? Who can you listen to? I'm hoping that the readership I've attracted through my print work still believes in me now that I'm online.

4. Have a voice. Your perspective on what's happening is unique. Stick to that. 5. Don't overthink it. I never want to sound like I'm simply shilling products. My favorite accounts feel off-the-cuff, effortless, and just plain sincere. If you had to choose between fashion and interiors, which one would you pick?

Plus, it's fun and I'm learning something new every day. I've been making a lot of videos and exploring apps like Unfold. My creativity feeds off things like this.

I can't choose between one or the other simply because I go through stages. Also, I'm a visual person, I believe one feeds off the other.

Since social media is your preferred platform of engagement with your followers, what are your top five social media rules?

You’re also a full-time mom to three energetic boys. How do you make it all work?

1. Be honest. I only post something that I believe in. Every recommendation I give is a piece of info I want to share with a friend.

It's easier now cause they're all in school. But more than anything, I have a supportive and understanding husband. And because they see that, I think they appreciate the value of work.

2. Stay true to your beliefs. It wasn't easy for me to go on public mode; public; that's the main reason why I don't put my kids on my IG or any public account.

I also have a few house rules! Each of which I discussed with them well so they really understand why I implement them and why it does them good.

3. Respect. I have a lot of friends who have their kids on their feed, and in all honesty, just because I choose not to have mine, doesn't mean what
