Exuberance

The Roaring Twenties, we are reminded, came after the devastating 1918 Spanish flu pandemic that claimed 500 million lives worldwide. After two years spent not just recovering from the ravages of the First World War, but a deadly influenza virus to boot, people were ready for freedom and exuberance. The decade ushered in the Jazz Age and the Harlem Renaissance, and was witness to buoyant economic growth and prosperity, not to mention a new exuberance, a carefree attitude towards life. After living in a pandemic for the better part of 2020— a year that began with such high hopes and dreams of continued strong economic performance on a global scale—we wonder, now that a vaccine is available, whether the world is heading towards another decade reminiscent Roaring Twenties, but the 21st century edition. We can certainly expect intense artistic creativity, as even during the lockdown, art continued to be created as artists continued to find ways to express themselves. But are we poised to return to an area of unbridled consumerism after learning that we could live without so many things that we once thought were essential? The lack of real face-to-face human contact has been one of the most difficult adjustments we have had to make as a result of the contagiousness of the coronavirus. As we rebuild our economy and our lives, will we also rebuild our relationships, and bring exuberance and joy back to human connections? Happy New Year!

Meet the Chef Jerome Louis Cartailler

Our new Executive Chef is a Frenchman trained in classical cuisine. One could also say Jerome Cartailler is an internationalist who delights in combining exotic flavors to add exciting new dimensions to culinary experiences When did you first know you would become a chef? Did you go to culinary school? What was your first job as a chef? I have loved to cook since I was a kid. After I failed in Pharmacy, I decided to become a professional chef. I did my hotel and culinary schooling in Chamalières, France, and did my practicum in France, too. My first job was as a commis chef in a palace in Munich, Germany. Where has your culinary career taken you? What brought you to the Philippines? Around Europe: Munich, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Luxembourg, Paris. And also to Dubai, Jakarta, Pune, Kaoshiung, Manila, Mactan, Clark, Batangas and Boracay. Not a what, but who! My wife and my former boss from Dubai is Filipina. What are the top three most memorable dinners/menus you’ve prepared and served and why?

The Chef putting finishing touches on a dish

I worked on part of the grand opening of Euro Disney, attended by Roy Disney, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and Mickey Mouse. For a once in a lifetime event, there was the private dinner for the King and Queen of Cambodia in their own palace kitchen. And a state dinner with 35 heads of state from Europe and Africa for a summit, with Ivanka Trump and the King of Morocco, etc. Who would you cook for in your ultimate fantasy dinner? I would cook for someone who has never been to a restaurant without being "suplado." I have cooked for all kinds—heads of states, and rock stars... 5

What are you hoping to bring to Manila House in terms of culinary flavors and experiences? To bring influences from my travel, taking the team to the next level by coaching them and having them express themselves by cooking to perfection as they have never achieved till now, and to offer our guests the ultimate experience in food and beverage.

“Enjoy each day, otherwise you will be a miserable cook.” What do you like to cook when you are at home? Or does your wife do the cooking?

Croque Monsieur

Pasta, pizza, sandwiches... no fancy dinners except on the weekend, we try to have a theme. Weekdays it's my wife's turn, weekends, it's me. Have any of your children shown any aptitude for cooking? My eldest daughter is a chef in Auckland, New Zealand. She shifted from marine biology to cooking, starting with the Sofitel and Marco Polo in Manila. What advice would you give a young chef starting out today? Never give up. There will be long hours searching for excellence which is never achieved; be ready for looooong days, the rewards are great. You get to know different cultures, meet lots of people, and you have the satisfaction of knowing you have made somebody happy with your art.

Golden Berries and Duet of Chocolate Paris-Brest

And enjoy each day, otherwise you will be a miserable cook.

Maine Uy

She is the SHEeo of the modern salon and club of Women Entrepreneurs called The SHEeo Society. One of our dynamic, driven Junior Members, Maine Uy believes in using her feminine strengths to her advantage in business You’re involved in The SHEeo Society. Tell us more about it and how you became a part of it. I launched The SHEeo Society last January 2020 with the intent to share all my knowledge and purpose with fellow women entrepreneurs like me. Having been in the business for more than eight years, I saw the importance of having a strong community as support for success. Being the Salonniere of our Club, I’m in charge of all the monthly club events, themes, and of course, the high-value and high-intentional business programs with the intent to ease 7

the business planning and developments of all women entrepreneurs who join our Club. The idea is to influence them to come from within and allow their inner intuition to guide them in launching and managing an intentional brand of their own. The effects of the pandemic are felt by everyone. How do you think women in particular have been affected? Having been in this “Coronacoaster,” there are so many ups and downs. Women are innately emotional. One day

“The digital world is all about tuning into the right frequency and finding the right people to surround ourselves with.”

Maine has found time for some dolce far niente during the pandemic

our moods are okay, then the next day, you'll find yourself crying. And this I believe is beautiful, we just have to embrace it and use this to our advantage. This pandemic made me appreciate being a woman and it taught me how to accept all my vulnerabilities and create something beautiful out of them. What is your outlook for 2021? What goals have you established for yourself? If 2020 was all about coming home to myself, this 2021 is all about embodying my highest self. I’ve been reading up a lot about Human Design by Alan Robert Krakower —a logical system that provides profound insights into our psychology, chakras, and unique genetic DNA. It’s an all-new level of self-awareness which is all based on our BodyGraph. All you have to do is input the exact date, time, and place of your birth. It will reveal your own genetic design that will tell you so much about your decision-making strategies and coping mechanisms in times of paralysis. My goals are very inward. By end of 2021, I am going to be more patient with myself by being more aware of my inner workings.

What was the highlight of your pandemic experience? Which coping mechanisms worked for you? Believe me when I say I made more friends during this pandemic than in the “normal world.” The digital world is all about tuning into the right frequency and finding the right people to surround ourselves with. Hosting my Club events every Saturday definitely filled the void of socializing, but other than that, having my dolce far niente moments, waking up at 5AM daily to enjoy the sunrise, and writing in my Five Minute Journal grounded me. Are you planning any travel soon? Once overseas travel has normalized, where would you like to go? Yes, I am planning to travel soon! I’m just skipping the holiday rush because for sure, a lot of us are itching to travel somewhere local first before overseas. I’m keen on booking a weekend in Aman, or probably a retreat in The Farm would be ideal, too. And once overseas travel has normalized, I’m definitely booking a trip back to Tokyo first just to replenish all my beauty essentials. From there, I’ll leave some room for spontaneity. 8

Love Song

It's always a cause for celebration when one of our Members publishes a book. Quintin Pastrana hosted a virtual book launch for his new poetry tome, AMBAHAN: A Love Story. His poetry is based on the seven-syllable meter ambahan tradition of the Hanunuo Mangyan tribe of Mindoro. Joining him at the launch were author and academic Danton Remoto, who translated the poems into Tagalog; UP Professor of Anthropology Nestor Castro, an expert on indigenous languages and peoples; and Lolita Delgado-Fansler, founding trustee of the Mangyan Heritage Center. Gin as Tonic by Quintin Pastrana You're the last marriage after a coven of bad judgment You're alchemy that transports and poetry that transforms: provenance and rebellion wearing the seasons in each constellation of garnish

A sky of ice, a prism marinating me inside. Strangers swoon over snooty peers as an artist's statement smothers lipstick on a pig: when all is discussed, distilled, and drunk—You simply taste good

Ang Gin Bilang Tonik Translated by Danton Remoto

The Future is Bright

Private bank and wealth manager J.P. Morgan considers the economic outlook for 2021, and finds that there’s reason to be hopeful

A

s we turn the page from 2020 and look ahead to 2021, we are excited to share our Outlook 2021: The global economy will heal. Embrace the optimism. Just when this year felt the most dire, the forces of human ingenuity and determination set us on a brighter path. Frontline healthcare staff and essential workers have kept us going during the pandemic. Today, the scientific community is on the cusp of delivering a vaccine in record time. We have also seen communities around the world come together to push for a more fair and equal society, and we hope to see further progress in the future. And from a financial perspective, the collective efforts of governments, central banks, consumers and businesses, all moving in the same direction, will help the global economy heal from the COVID-19 crisis. This year’s outlook includes both an interactive web experience, alongside our full report. In it, we discuss what we think will be the key drivers of the recovery in 2021, the risks, and our top investment ideas. In today’s Top Market Takeaways, we wanted to bring you the key points:

1. The global economy will continue to heal from the coronavirus pandemic. 2. We expect output in parts of Asia and the United States to surpass pre-pandemic levels while Europe and Latin America lag. China has already recovered lost output. 3. Investors should be critical of excess cash holdings. 4. Global equity markets will likely reach new highs. 5. We expect equities to outperform high yield bonds and core fixed income. High yield bonds remain an anchor for portfolio returns. 6. Interest rates will likely rise modestly as the economy heals, but they should remain near secular low levels. 7. We are focused on three key themes to guide our investment decisions: navigating volatility; finding yield; and harnessing megatrends. 8. Risks to our view include economic malaise catalyzed by ineffective virus containment, governments and central banks failing to provide sufficient policy support, the tech war between the United States and China, and geopolitical flashpoints. 9. Core fixed income may still provide the most efficient protection against equity volatility.

In Asia in particular, China remains an anchor for our regional views. China’s growth recovery has been remarkable, buoyed by strong exports and a steady catch-up in household spending. We expect China’s GDP growth to strengthen further to 8.2% in 2021 (vs. 2020’s expected 2.2%), as a fully-fledged consumer recovery kicks in and manufacturing investment likely recovers. Given mild inflation and a weak U.S. dollar environment, policymakers are likely to take a neutral stance, with little need to embark on an aggressive tightening cycle. We’re also turning more constructive on the rest of Asia. The cyclical recovery in developed markets should support exportoriented economies like Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and some ASEAN economies. Furthermore, a modestly weaker U.S. dollar should further ease financial conditions for Southeast Asia and India. All in all, we see a strong case for Asia to outperform next year. And last, but certainly not least, the one key point we want to underscore in any given year is to have a plan. We believe this young recovery could last for years. But before you act on this kind of optimism, make sure you have a solid, longrange investment strategy that aligns with the goals you have for yourself and your family. Planning holistically is the only way you can truly build—and keep full confidence in—your investment portfolio. As you look for opportunities and meet the challenges that 2021 will bring, we will be there to help you and your family achieve your financial goals. Reprinted with permission from J.P.
