Heroes At a time of global uncertainty, there is a yearning among people for modern heroes to emerge, men and women who inspire and motivate, who embody values we feel are swiftly being eroded, who represent a fearlessness that the cowed and complicit do not possess. But what defines a hero? This month, Medal and Honor, a new exhibition by artist Dennis T. Atienza, examines the notion of heroism through portraits of our national heroes. It includes an image of what has come to be regarded as our modern-day hero, the Overseas Filipino Worker who toils abroad, often at great personal cost and sometimes under less than desirable conditions, in order to provide a better future for his or her family. Time was when heroes brought about social and political change in their societies, either through ideas, or through armed struggle, or both. Two of our national heroes, Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio, whose striking portraits by Jose Tence Ruiz command one wall of the Avenue Bar and who are also depicted in Medal and Honor, are thought to represent two different sides of heroism. Rizal, who was of the ilustrado educated class, was executed by the Spanish, who accused him of fomenting the revolution against Spain through his writings. Bonifacio was the plebeian from Tondo who agitated for independence through armed struggle. One believed in the essential benevolence of our colonial masters, who would in due course accede to the clamor for reforms; the other was less inclined to give the Spanish the benefit of the doubt, convinced that an armed revolution was the only way. Who can say what kind of nation the Philippines might have become had both men not been killed prematurely? Today, wars are fought on different fronts, with cyber warfare and social media the frightening new arenas of battle. How do we fight for principles that are disappearing under conditions that are swiftly mutating? How do heroes emerge under these circumstances? There are heroes among us, no doubt, fighting the good fight, in many different ways. For heroism does not always have to be about the sweeping gesture. Often it’s the quiet, unsung efforts to bring about change that make the hero. Happy Independence Day!

Get to Know: Lhara Aguinaldo When it comes to money matters, we count on Lhara to take the lead in handling the financial operations in Manila House What do you do for Manila House? I am in-charge of managing the Manila House finances and I am accountable for recording the financial transactions of the Club, along with summarizing and presenting the results using financial reports and analyses. Next to our Finance Director, I also oversee the Finance department, which includes Accounting, Payroll, Treasury, Income Audit, and Purchasing team. Did you always like numbers? Not that much because it gives me nightmares sometimes. Just kidding! I love numbers since learning them in grade school. Why did you opt to work for a private membership club? When I worked as an external auditor, I became exposed not just to the membership aspect of an exclusive club, but to the service and hospitality industry, in general. I gained meaningful experience and became passionate about it. As part of my training, I became very knowledgeable about the Hospitality Industry (on Finance side and on the process itself). Then, after my years being an external auditor, the Manila House opportunity came my way. Gladly, I have been here for more than a year now! Describe your idea of a perfect day.

What's the first thing you'll do when you win the lottery?

A perfect day for me is simply waking up happy and worrying about nothing before going to sleep.

First thing that I’ll do when I win the lottery is to go to the Church, thank God and donate a percentage of it.

Phillip Hagedorn With his forebears at the helm of one the top securities companies in the country, one could say Phillip Hagedorn's career path was pretty much cut out for him. He joined Anscor Hagedorn Securities, Inc. after graduating from Boston College with a B.S. degree in Marketing. Today, he serves as Chief Investment Officer of ATR Asset Management (ATRAM). He shares his views on the stock market here and beyond What drew you to investments and the stock brokerage industry? My grandfather and father were both in the stock brokerage industry. My father, Fred Hagedorn III was the President of the Manila Stock Exchange. How did you hone your skills? As the saying goes, “It's time in the market.” There is no better teacher than time and experience. Of course preparing yourself with the basic skills required is important but the most important is sticking to “it” to make “it” happen. What advice would you give a newbie who wants to invest in the stock market? Buy a company because you like its products and you think other will like the products as well. Look around you. What do you like to do? Where do you like to

go to spend your time & money? What food do you like to eat? Clothes you might like to wear? Gadgets you might want to buy? In many cases, the answers to these question might present an investment opportunity as well. What keeps the Philippine stock market resilient? The bottom line is the growing profits of listed companies. If the profits don't grow the stock price won't either. Is that likely to continue in the short- and medium-term? As long as the country continues to invest in infrastructure and the focus remains on reduction of poverty then I think this will set the stage for future earnings growth and stock prices of Philippine companies will continue to rise over the medium to long term. The short term is much more difficult to forecast.

Phillip with his wife Techie

Phillip and Techie in Bali with their daughters Clara and Emilia

Are you optimistic about the US stock market? I think the US has some of the best companies in the world. The question of sustained earnings growth is the challenge. One thing I probably wouldn't do is to bet against the US in the long term. In the short term anything can happen. Your family was in the securities business. Do you see any of your kids getting into it in the future? That will be up to them. I think its important to understand how

markets work but you don't necessarily have to make a living out of it. How do you like to unwind during the weekends? I like to spend my weekends in the outdoors with my family. I do recommend starting the weekend with a G&T at Manila House on Friday nights!

ON SHOW

When A Hero Comes Along These turbulent times we live in cry out for a hero. A new exhibition encourages us to examine the heroism that forged a nation over a century ago

T

he month of June marks the celebration of Independence Day. Fittingly, Manila House presents, with Manahan Art Projects, Medal and Honor, an exhibition of paintings by Dennis T. Atienza that poses the question, “What is a hero?” The exhibit is comprised of the artist’s depictions of Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Antonio Luna, Emilio Aguinaldo, Juan Luna, and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo. In addition to the traditional heroes, the artist, who was an Overseas Filipino Worker himself, portrays a female OFW being honored as a modern-day hero.

ABOUT DENNIS T. ATIENZA Dennis T. Atienza earned his Fine Arts degree in Product Design Development Technology from Technological University of the Philippines. A second place awardee in the Metrobank Design Excellence competition in 2008, he has been participating in local group shows since 2005. He, along with Alfredo Esquillo and Robert Besana, are the founding members of the Kalye Collective. The exhibition runs until July 1

Heroic Rivals

Jose Rizal

Two men loom larger than the others in our national pantheon: Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio. One the intellectual, the other, the revolutionary. Both wanted independence from Spanish rule, but believed in divergent paths towards achieving it. Both had their acolytes and devotees; both met untimely deaths. And both men continue to provoke heated arguments among those who strongly feel that one was the better, braver, more effective hero than the other. But perhaps taken together, both men are more accurately representative of us as Filipinos, in our our complexity and all our complexes, our disappointments and our dreams.

I was not brought up among the people, and perhaps I do not know what they need. I spent my childhood in the Jesuit school and grew up in Europe. My opinions were formed by books, and I know only what has been exposed; I know nothing of the things that remain hidden, that have not been written about…”

Andres Bonifacio

Of our heroes, Andres Bonifacio has had, like an uncouth guest at a swanky party, the most trouble getting seated at the table of honor – if all that talk about being ‘downgraded’ has any meaning. The ilustrados are partly blamed for this; but the fact is, it was an ilustrado group, headed by Don Fernando Maria Guerrero of El Renacimiento, that started the Bonifacio cult back in the early 1900s, when the Supremo was all but forgotten, and Aguinaldo and Rizal were getting all the attention. The argument that he was ‘downgraded’ in American days because he was a revolutionary doesn’t hold water. Didn’t Aguinaldo lead a revolution; aren’t Rizal’s writings dangerous and inflammatory? Or maybe we were being snobbish and couldn’t stomach Bonifacio because he was lowborn. But we had no trouble placing Mabini the peasant, though Mabini’s origins were miserable.”

“…I would never be the one to lead the mob to take by force what the Government believes inopportune. If I should ever see the mob in arms, I would take the side of the Government and fight against it because I would not recognize my country in such a mob!” - Crisostomo Ibarra in Noli Me Tangere, Jose Rizal’s first novel

For Better or Worse ABOUT MARIA VICTORIA ROTOR-HILADO

Marriage has always had implications on property ownership and estate succession. Exactly what these are will be discussed by esteemed lawyer Maria Victoria Rotor-Hilado

A graduate of the Ateneo Law School in 1985 with Bachelor of Laws degree, Atty. Rotor-Hilado graduated third in her class and placed fifth in bar examinations of the same year. She began working for the law film Angara Abello Concepcion Regala & Cruz (Accralaw) in 1986 as an Associate in the Corporate Special Projects Department. After a brief hiatus to go into solo practice, she returned to Accralaw as a part-time consultant, attending to several projects in the firm including electronic data conversion.

Does marriage automatically mean that what’s yours is mine? Matrimonial regimes, or marital property systems, are systems of property ownership between spouses providing for the creation or absence of a marital estate, and if created, what properties are included in that estate, how and by whom it is managed, and how it will be divided and inherited at the end of the marriage.

She is a solo practitioner specializing in estate planning, estate settlement, and real property transactions. She is the author of several books, including A Well-Ordered Estate (2017), Heirs & Their Shares (2016), in addition to The Laws for Life series co-authored with Gianna Reyes Montinola. WHAT IS YOURS, WHAT IS MINE AND WHAT IS OURS: Understanding the Property Regimes of Marriage with Maria Victoria Rotor-Hilado

Matrimonial regimes can take several forms: conjugal partnership, absolute community, and complete separation. But what exactly do they mean and how are the respective spouses affected by such regimes?

Thursday | June 20 | 6PM

Atty. Rotor-Hilado has a knack for expressing legalese into language that the layman can easily understand. She combines this skill with her expert knowledge of the law to inform and enlighten and even reassure those who are married, cohabiting, or contemplating marriage.

The Single Life Glenmorangie hosts an exclusive whisky-tasting class to introduce its world-class range of single malt whisky

G

lenmorangie has been producing single malt whisky since 1843, when William Matheson founded the Glenmorangie Distillery in the Scottish Highlands. The award-winning single malt is wonderfully complex and exceptionally smooth. Its pure, smooth spirit is distilled in Scotland’s tallest stills, matured in the finest casks and perfected by The Men of Tain, the select craftsmen entrusted with the secrets of the distillery. For the whisky-tasting and food-pairing class, Glenmorangie will showcase four single malts from its Core Expressions range, spirits that were first matured in ex-bourbon casts, then transferred into ex-wine casks, allowing them to gain further layers of flavor.

ABOUT JOVINO MIROY

atin is all around us, its words and phrases and even maxims have made their way to our everyday speech. We maintain the status quo when we don’t want things to change; we come up with an alibi to cover up where we’ve been; we expect a bonus at the end of the year; and politics seems to be a matter of murky quid pro quo transactions.

A Doctor of Philosophy with a PhD from the prestigious University of Leuven in Belgium, Professor Miroy teaches Medieval Philosophy at the Ateneo de Manila University. All levels welcome

Latin, in fact, is very much alive today, and not just as the base of all Romance languages. But to speak and write complete sentences in Latin might require a bit more effort. The Art of Tidying Up Christine Dychiao sparked joy during her talk about decluttering and the simple yet effective approach of the Konmari Method

P

iles and piles of books, overstuffed drawers and shelves, super crowded table tops and pantries—did we just describe your house? Sadly, because of our busy, fast-paced lifestyle that’s consequently creating a never-ending cycle of piling and stocking up on clothing, papers, books, and komono (miscellaneous items), we tend to disregard the growing mess in our homes. But how do we start with the cleaning process? “The best way to find out what we really need is to let go of what we don’t,” says Marie Kondo, founder of the KonMari method. These words resonated and are still followed to heart by Christine Dychiao, a fashion blogger turned tidying advocate, and now the only certified Konmari consultant in the country. During her talk, the KonMari consultant explained the approach of the KonMari method. Working with concepts like tidying is a celebration to envisioning your ideal life by starting with your own things, Christine also shared the emotional benefits of decluttering thru letting go of sentimental items. “Life transforming—it changes your life and perspective. You will never revert to clutter again,” she shares, as preached by Kondo-san herself.

THE KONMARI METHOD • Tidying is a celebration. Commit yourself to tidying up • Envision your ideal life. Start with your own things • Begin by discarding. Say “thank you” • Tidy by category, not by location, completely in one go • Follow the right order • Ask yourself if it sparks joy

For more information about the Konmari Method from Christine Dychiao follow her on Instagram @sparkjoy.ph. 17

That night, Manila House was the place to be as Members and their guests came in colorful sparkly jumpsuits, glam metallic numbers, and yes, curlier-than-thou afros.

Disco Fever

Eventologist extraordinnaire Tim Yap hosted the programme and was later joined onstage by STEPS Dance Studio founder Sofia Elizalde who shared a heartwarming video of her cause.

Members and Guests put their dancing shoes on and partied all night for a good cause

Disco queens “Diana Ross”, “Tina Turner,” and “Donna Summer” even made surprise appearances courtesy of the Drag-ons, a trio of talented drag artists who brought the [Manila] House down with their flawless lip-syncing and contagious high-energy dancing with favorite disco anthems like I’m Coming Out, Shake Your Groove Thing, Proud Mary, and Last Dance.

I

t was an epic night to remember. Last April 13, Manila House together with BELO Medical Group brought back the spirit of the 70s with their event, A Night at The Disco, for the benefit of STEPS Scholarship Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides support to disadvantaged youths who want to pursue further studies in dance.

The night wasn’t over though. The dance party really started when international star DJ John Robinson took his position on the decks and played popular dance hits from the 70s and 80s, just like the glory days of disco playgrounds such as Stargazer, Euphoria, and Rumors.

Event styling team Moss Manila turned the Intramuros ballroom into a far-out disco nightclub decked with hanging silver tassels, black and white lounge chairs, a psychedelic dance floor, and a rotating mirror ball to complete the Disco era. Dramatic draping care of Bloomwoods added to the party feel as well.

Wines, refreshments, and cocktails from Don Papa Rum, ARC Gin, Casa Noble Tequila, and Heineken were served all throught the event as guests danced, enjoyed, and reminisced the night away. 18
