In This Issue
March On The month of March is internationally headlined as Women’s Month, in order to highlight the contributions of women to history and society. It also serves as a reminder to all that we still have a long way to go towards addressing important issues such as the gender pay gap as well as the disparity in economic opportunities for women, and violence against women. As the march for equality continues, there is nevertheless much to celebrate. One woman who has never allowed her being a woman to get in the way is the late Carmen Guerrero-Nakpil. They don’t make ‘em like her anymore - intelligent, sophisticated, witty, eloquent, and diplomatic when the occasion demanded it - she once held the rank of ambassador, after all - and blisteringly acerbic when the person deserved it. Her daughter, Founding Member Gemma Cruz Araneta, shared her mother’s 1951 essay on being a woman, Woman Enough, which you can read on page 9. An extraordinary woman you’ll meet this month in the flesh is Xyza Cruz Bacani, who in the course of working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong, discovered that she had a talent for street and documentary photography, which soon catapulted her to international attention. She talks about her transformative journey in conversation with Founding Member Jaime Zobel de Ayala, kicking off our new series of talks, Changing the Narrative. And, let’s be honest, there are aspects of being a woman that we approach with trepidation, such as menopause. But don’t fret, the renowned ob-gyn Dr. Rebecca Singson will be here on March 13 - behind closed doors - to answer everything you ever wanted to know about “the change." Speaking of change, check out the new additions to our bar menu, as well as our new pizza specials. What won’t ever change, however, is our delight in seeing you at Manila House, where we always endeavor to make you feel at home.

MEET TH E S TA FF
Get To Know: Chef Sigrid Santiago In celebration of International Women's Month, we introduce the woman behind all the delectable dishes of Manila House. From overseeing four outlets, dynamic menu upgrades and a culinary team, Chef Siggy keeps it cool even on hot days, showing true woman power. Why did you decide to become a Chef? As with most chefs in the industry, my interest started at a young age. It’s either I’m at school, playing with friends or in the kitchen watching my mom cook dinner for the family. My interest gradually leaned towards watching cooking shows on TV rather than MTV or teen shows, for that matter. Later on, I found myself enjoying the market despite the crowd, heat and the smell. I was more fascinated with the produce being sold all around me, not minding the occasional bumps from the people in a rush to get home and cook for their families. It was good energy for me and I never had second thoughts about pursuing this career. As a woman, what was it like to break into the world dominated by male chefs? It wasn’t easy but it wasn’t that hard either to make me turn my back and give up. Now, I've been in the industry 20 years and still going. I think you just need to show them that this is what you really want and you will make it, radiate that determination and deliver results. You don’t need to look like a man or act like one to make it. What really matters is the output, as with any career whether it be in the kitchen or in the office, man or woman, any age. What is the best thing about being a female head chef?
Who is your favorite celebrity chef?
We are just a bit more of everything! But kidding aside, I think I find myself being able to communicate and connect more in all aspects. I am like their mom away from their moms! We spend more time at work than in our own homes, unfortunately, it's the sad truth, that's why I want to create an atmosphere wherein they feel like family and not strangers. It is said that females embody gentleness, empathy, sensitivity, caring, sweetness, compassion, tolerance and many more. Need I say more? I rest my case!
Jamie Oliver. He cooks with passion, instinct and freedom. What would you recommend to first time diners at Manila House? We are working on a new menu that’s geared towards Southeast Asian flavors and a few of the healthy alternative dishes. We hope to release it by the end of the first quarter. But my personal favorite from the current one would be the Mushroom Truffle Rigatoni. I like the combination of the rich, earthy and nutty flavor from the mushrooms and the parmesan.
What is your specialty? I always have difficulty answering this question because I believe that being a chef is a neverending exploration. Although I can say that I’m a resourceful one. I work with what I have. I love the creative energy it feeds me. There is this great joy when you create something from what is available. The satisfaction is even greater when the people you feed appreciate your creativity.
It's International Women's Day on March 8, how do you plan to celebrate? A plate of Manchego and Stilton, roasted almonds, a bottle or two of Red and a good hour of foot and leg massage…….holding a sign saying you go girl!

Cara Wilson Returning to Manila after two decades in Italy, Cara Wilson made the empowerment of women her mission. FTW, the non-profit she established together with two partners, is focused on upskilling women to increase their career opportunities in the tech world through free education. She recently - and proudly - witnessed the graduation of her first batch of women scholars
The first batch of FTW graduates
Cara Wilson with co-founders Derya Tanghe and Paco Caparas
Do women rule the world?
We were very targetted about our search for applicants on social media. After launching a rigorous three-tiered selection process on-line, we received almost 500 applications which really shows there is a huge need and understanding of the importance of data skills for career growth. We then narrowed the selection for face-to-face interviews to 60 and hand-picked 30 deserving scholars. We chose based on aptitude, communication skills, grit and tenacity and we now have highly skilled and motivated Data Scientists and Digital Marketers that are ready to conquer the digital world!
Not yet but they certainly can, if they want to. We are trying to make sure more women in the Philippines have more opportunities to do so. Why did you decide to start an educational foundation for women? Women are under-represented in the tech sector. The Philippine business community is also particularly receptive to great female talent. It is extremely gratifying to help other women and I have learnt so much from this experience.
What was going through your head when you saw the first batch of women graduate? I was extremely proud of all they and FTW Foundation had accomplished in just a few months. The employer partners that we invited were also very impressed by the high level of skills that the graduates demonstrated.
So it’s obviously a myth than women can’t code? Yes, GitHub (2016) published a study that found that in gender-blind tests, code written by women was approved by clients at a higher rate than code written by men. We need to encourage more women to get involved because they have the capacity to excel in this field.
Are you planning to expand your programme to other parts of the Philippines? Yes, definitely. We are currently gathering the resources to do so and we have big dreams to make the Philippines a capital of data talent. We aspire to train up to 5,000 scholars a year which would mean a contribution of over $50,000,000 to the Philippine economy and this should benefit women all over the country. FTW Foundations motto is For the Women, For the Win, For the World!
How did you find the instructors for your course programmes? How did you attract your first batch of students? Our instructors are industry practitioners that are already successful in the Data Science and Digital Marketing fields. We stress real-world applications in our curriculum so we wanted teachers that brought best practices catering to what employers are looking for right now. They also really support our advocacy to provide world-class and FREE training to deserving women.
Cara Wilson will present, together with the Harvard Club of the Philippines, an exclusive fundraising event for the benefit of FTW, featuring a fireside chat between Xyza Cruz Bacani and Jaime Augusto Zobel called CHANGING THE NARRATIVE: An Intimate Conversation of Transformation and Photography, on March 5 at 6PM

POELEEN ALVAREZ
TAMMY DE ROCA
Poeleen Alvarez earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Hailing from Obando, Bulacan, she considers herself a spectator of the wildly fast-paced circus that is the city. As such, her collages and intermedia work draw inspiration from the visual culture of urban landscapes – a patchwork of loud print advertisements, glossy high-rise facades, the boisterous colors of jeepneys, and public infrastructures beset with off-beat street art. Currently, she is taking up a second degree in Art History from the UP College of Fine Arts while teaching hand-built ceramics at Tahanan Pottery Shop & School and the UP Ceramics Studio.
Tammy De Roca, a Manila based artist, completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Heavily influenced by nature, Tammy’s works combine her painterly strokes and ceramics background into explorations of harmonizing movements and texture onto a canvas. Her reverence towards the ocean’s energies, have inspired her to make works that give a fluidity of various motions depicting a visionary form of her meditative state. Tammy De Roca’s works have shown in Mono 8 Gallery, Vinyl on Vinyl, and Ysobel Gallery. 5

JEM MAGBANUA
FAYE PAMINTUAN
Grounded firmly in the practice of drawing, Jem Magbanua's work explores the nature of place, of human beings in place, and of the structures- organic and artificial- that shape (human) nature. Within her drawings, she limns landscapes that lie between the mental and the physical where structural space converge with the realm of intangible memories. Her entropic mise-en-scènes oscillate between the real and the imaginary, bringing into play personal objects of mundanity and comfort.
Faye Pamintuan graduated from the University of the Philippines Diliman with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. She was born and is currently based in Manila, Philippines but grew up in Texas, USA. Constantly traveling between the two places influences her practice – she is interested in the fluidity of identity and the changing landscapes around her. Working mostly with oil paint, Pamintuan is fascinated by color and the puzzle of balancing biomorphic shapes in a confined space. Through this practice, Pamintuan questions the idea of barriers and the energies surrounding everyday happenings. Her works have been exhibited at 1335 Mabini, Vinyl on Vinyl, and Artery Art Space.
Magbanua earned her degree in Fine Arts from the Lasalle College of the Arts Singapore, First Class. Her work has been exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions in the Philippines, the United States, Japan, and Singapore. She currently lives and works in Manila, Philippines.

This Can Save Your Life: The KonMari Method If you feel that clutter equals chaos and clean spaces equal serenity and joy, maybe it’s time to KonMari your life
Christine Dychiao
It’s about choosing joy.
Beginning with an overview of the KonMari Method, she will zero in on the following:
Most tidying methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method™ encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and, finally, sentimental items. Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go.
- A decluttering checklist - The causes of clutter - Tidying tips and transformations - The benefits of decluttering - KonMari folding methods Perhaps it’s time to bring joy back into your life and declutter the non-essentials from your home.
People around the world have been drawn to this philosophy not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and forward-looking.
THIS CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE: THE KONMARI METHOD With Christine Dychiao SATURDAY | MARCH 23 | 3-5 PM
The simple but revolutionary approach this method takes has taken the world by storm. Christine Dychiao, a fashion blogger turned tidying advocate is the only certified KonMari consultant in the Philippines. She gives a talk and mini-workshop to introduce the method and why it works.

Woman Enough The late Carmen Guerrero-Nakpil was a formidable woman. A journalist, essayist, author, historian, and public servant, hers was an intellect that was fierce and a sense of humor that was sharp and piercing. March being Women’s Month, her daughter, Founding Member Gemma Cruz Araneta, shares a piece her mother wrote in 1951 for her newspaper column
A
t an age in which the only signs of femininity in my spare, dark, cropcared frame were the little wire hoops strung through my pierced ears, I discovered that if I invoked my womanhood loudly enough, I always bested anyone foolish (and masculine) enough to get into an argument with me. The only girl in a family of dominant, lordly males, I learned the most obvious kind of feminism very early in life.
As a journalist in "a man's world", I realized what a great teacher my father was. There is a notion abroad that newspapermen are unchivalrous louts. They are not. The editor apologized for every distasteful assignment he gave me; the motor pool man allowed me to be driven off in his only available vehicle; foreign correspondents waited for me all evening while their news-sources took me out to dinner.
My father, a gallant of the old school, always decided any quarrels between my brothers and myself with unabashed partiality to me for the reason that "she is the only girl." I received the fattest cushion to sit on, the place at the table farthest from the draft and closest to the serving dishes, the largest allowance, the coolest room in the house, the least discipline, the most praise.
Of course, there were times when I would have to stagger through the newsroom carrying a vast, antique typewriter, or a bundle of files, while a dozen newsmen in the same room never even took their feet off their desk tops. But, even for a woman, I am very reasonable. I could see why a man who comes up to my chin sometimes feels, through no fault of mine, rather unnecessary.
I could provoke, nag and tease my brothers with impunity because chivalry (very much reluctant in their case) forbade them to strike a woman, even an impossible brat of seven. In the fierce familial rivalry involving our school report cards, I was allowed a handicap of ten points in arithmetic because it was assumed that, being a girl, I would be weak in the head. I lied, broke my word, flew into unexplained rages (comforts denied my brothers) because my father, a man of the world, expected that kind of behavior from a woman.
It is said that all devout Jewish men begin their day by giving thanks to God that they were not born women. An early Greek philosopher wrote that he thanked God for four favors, one of them that he was born a man and not an animal, and another that he was born a man and not a woman. These are sentiments which all men claim, although with less formality. But I cannot help feeling that men are disingenuous. If they are glad to be men, why do they always have to push one another into being men? Be A man! or, Aren't You Man Enough? are cliches of masculine conversation. No one ever has to remind a woman to Be A Woman. For what every woman knows is better left unsuspected by all men, and even the least of us is always woman enough.
During the great pre-war earthquake in Manila, my brothers, grunting and groaning and considerably more frightened than me were made to carry me down two flights of stairs to safety while I lay in a pretended and lady-like faint. I had, by that time, grown into a large, imposing five-foot-seven, at which altitude I often found it rather taxing to be feminine. But I had had a lot of practice.

While working in Hong Kong for an Australian family, however, she discovered a talent for street and documentary photography. It’s no surprise that the former Crown Colony has become a global art destination, with hotels, restaurants and old heritage buildings being transformed into stunning showcases of art. THE MURRAY A former government office in a modernist tower turned chic hotel, The Murray is a low-key showstopper that tends towards the minimalist but majestic. Its location on Cotton Tree Drive just before the Peak Tram is ideal: close to everything but a convenient distance from the bustle of the heart of Central, where the major shopping centers are.
The bedrooms and suites also reflect this same pared-down but luxurious aesthetic, with dark wood floors a refreshing change from the usual carpeting found in many hotels. And waking up to vistas of a Hong Kong dotted by lush hills interspersed with high-rise condominium towers instead of the proverbial harbor view is a unique pleasure.
Sir Norman Foster’s team at the renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners oversaw the transformation of the building, built in 1969, into a luxury hotel which now joins the ranks of Hong Kong’s iconic landmarks. In signature Hong Kong style, The Murray is a sophisticated blend of past and present, with a nod to the future.
This contemporary urban sanctuary features 336 sophisticated spacious suites and guestrooms across 25 storeys and five elegant dining destinations including a glamorous rooftop restaurant and bar with panoramic views. The hotel’s terraces around the arches, an architectural signature of the building also showcase views of the city, Hong Kong Park and Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens.
There are many features that make The Murray stand out, from the striking art installations in the lobby – Korean artist Bahk Seon-Ghi’s An Aggregation, for instance, is a series of suspending charcoal fragments demonstrating the relationship between man and nature – to the outdoor sculpture garden,
