Gratitude And just like that, it’s November. Even in this most unusual of years, which saw everything upended, some things remain constant. With the welcome nip in the air, not to mention the Christmas decorations already up in malls and major streets, the holidays are most definitely upon us. We’ve also become a little braver, stepping out of our homes every so tentatively, face masks, face shields and hand sanitizers in tow, learning to live with the reality that the virus is still around, but a vaccine may be available within the first six months of 2021. With Thanksgiving being celebrated this month, there’s a lot to be optimistic about, even during a pandemic. We are thankful for having survived the months of lockdown, and to have the loyal support of so many Members. We are fortunate to have the wide outdoor spaces that reassure Members and their guests that they can socialize safely, with the requisite physical distancing measures in place. And, for those who prefer to stay home and connect with us online, we appreciate the opportunity to deliver a varied programme of webinars and events on Zoom. This month, we tackle some of the most topical issues of the day, such as the coronavirus response in countries with female-led governments; the possibilities that a second passport or a second residence might present; and perhaps the one thing one everyone’s mind at the moment, the US elections, and whether we can expect a Biden victory, or another four years of Trump, and what either scenario might mean for the global economy. And then perhaps we can really be grateful.

Get to Know: Roy Bendijo A Manila House veteran, Roy Bendijo has been welcoming Members to Bonifacio Dining since the Club opened its doors

What was your first impression of Manila House? It's the perfect setting for Manila's social elite. Their go-to place for exclusivity. What's the most exciting and challenging part of your job? The exciting part is whenever I get to serve important personalities, almost everyday, and the challenging part is standing on my feet for long hours with the capacity to smile while managing to fulfill Members' requests to their satisfaction. What are your other interests outside of work?

The thing I mostly look forward to is my rest day and spending time with family. The last thing that made me laugh is Jim Carrey on SNL impersonating Biden. My Netflix recommendation is Million Pound Menu

Cooking, gardening, and running.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years, if there's no pandemic?

Which Manila House dish resembles you the most? I would say Chicharon Bulaklak. Every bite gets you closer to heaven (hehe). Seriously, I think it's the best in town.

With or without the pandemic, in ten years, I'd like to find myself in a position to mentor young aspiring hospitality professionals. I would like to have my own training center.

Mons Romulo

An advocate for the best of Filipino artistry, Mons Romulo is the driving force behind Katutubo, a pop-up market that is focused on showcasing Philippine fashion and accessories, urging people to #wearyourculture

Katutubo has grown since you first launched this bazaar at Manila House. What motivated you to conceptualize Katutubo? Why did you feel it was the right time to focus on an all-Filipino bazaar? Katutubo PH started 2017. Back then I would often represent my brother [Pasig Congressman] Roman Romulo to official events and meetings proudly wearing Philippine-inspired clothes and weaves. I loved it so much that 5

at one dinner in Manila House with friends, I wore a hand-beaded top hand sewn by a local community in Mindanao. A lot were surprised with what I was wearing and they started calling me Senator. At that time, wearing a Filipino inspired top or a dress with Filipino weaves was more associated with people working in government. I wanted to change all that. I wanted to see more Filipinos and foreigners, too, wear clothes that show our culture.

What are the most amazing brands and designer labels you’ve discovered through Katutubo? Kaayo for one. I love how they were able to create stylish, beautiful clothes with hand beaded accents using Philippine fabrics. Mandy Dela Rama Santos—as of this moment from the time we started, her lovely clothes are exclusively sold at our Katutubo Pop Ups and website. Everyday Pnay— I saw their lovely designs through IG,

MH | I N T E R V I E W

Mons with her daughters, Cara and Cheskie

With designers and fellow Manila House Members Techie Hagedorn and Mandy de la Rama Santos, and Bryan Lim

“I wanted to change all that. I wanted to see more Filipinos and foreigners, too, wear clothes that show our culture.” we met so I could check out the quality of their merchandise and they are grateful that their first pop up was in Katutubo. StyleAna—her comfortable ternos and Maria tops are always a hit. I was also touched by how grateful she was to Katutubo PH, because when her husband was operated on, the earnings she made and sold was helped her pay their hospital bill. How has the bazaar format adapted to the realities of COVID? The health of our shoppers, merchants and staff are our top priority. We make sure we follow the IATF and local government health protocols. We have SafePass which keeps track of the total number of people in the venue. Every night, the Katutubo area at the Bench Tower, BGC is exposed to UV lights for 20 minutes to make sure that the place is safe for everyone. And of course we take the temperature of all the guests coming in. We trimmed down our merchants from 65 merchants to 35 and we always make sure everyone who enters Katutubo PH is wearing their face shields and face masks. Social distancing is strictly observed.

What was the hardest part of the lockdown for you? What has been the silver lining for you throughout this pandemic? The hardest part during the lockdown was not being able to see my parents. Not having the freedom we once had. Kissing and hugging my loved ones. But I believe everything happens for a reason. Life was so fast back then. I had such a busy life. One day I’m in Manila and the next day I could be in Bangkok. But I’m much happier living a simpler life. I realized that we don’t need much to be happy. My prayer life and relationship with our Lord is much deeper. What are you looking forward to once this is all over? I look forward to being able to hug, kiss and be with my loved ones most especially my parents, anytime I want. I don’t want to make long term plans anymore. This pandemic taught me to enjoy the moment and live my life one day at a time.

Why Is Now A Good Time To Borrow?

With economic uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, adding liquidity to your balance sheet can give you financial flexibility—and peace of mind

N

ow may be a good time to increase your financial flexibility with a well-crafted plan to efficiently and easily access liquidity—and to have it in place prior to when you might need it. With today’s historically low interest rates, borrowing outright or establishing a line of credit for future use can add to your peace of mind, given the uncertainties in the current economic environment. You might also consider establishing a credit line as part of a broader liquidity strategy to help you manage cash flows for personal or business matters; meet unexpected expenses; take advantage of an opportunity, or fund timesensitive financial obligations, such as tax payments— all without disturbing your long-term investments. As with any well-thought-out wealth management strategy, plans to integrate credit should be tied to your financial goals, with income and outflows carefully analyzed to ensure they are aligned with your overall financial picture. 9

FINANCIAL FLEXIBILITY The goals of any liquidity management strategy are to help you: 1. Avoid a forced asset sale when market conditions are unfavorable 2. Gain financial flexibility, so you can enjoy your lifestyle, take advantage of new opportunities, and advance your legacy and other wealth plans However, adding liquidity to your balance sheet is not simply a matter of setting aside funds in a cash account (though setting aside cash for emergencies or unexpected expenses may be part of your plan). Sophisticated lenders can help you structure liquidity management strategies—using a combination of a credit line, short-duration fixed income and other cash instruments—to address your needs and personal circumstances.

MH | F E A T U R E S

SHIELD OR SPEAR One size does not fit all when it comes to adding liquidity to your balance sheet. You can use liquidity as a shield to help protect your wealth. Or it can be your spear—a source of ready resources when you want to achieve a specific goal, such as when unexpected opportunities materialize. Or both. Without your having to liquidate assets to meet needs or fund opportunities, or keep a higher than desired literal amount of cash on hand. Much depends on where you are in your life and what you want to achieve. Perhaps you’d like to:

• Pay taxes or meet time-sensitive obligations, such as charitable contributions, without disturbing your investment plans TH E “ B U C KE T ” APPROAC H

• Make opportunistic investments during down markets

So how much liquidity is right for you now? To help you think it through, we recommend first creating a framework. Think of allocating your resources into financial “buckets,” deciding how big a percentage you may want to allocate to the different areas of your life. Commonly used buckets are liquidity (cash), lifestyle and legacy. Learn more about buckets.

• Bridge a funding gap to cover lifestyle expenditures or fund big-ticket purchases, while waiting to receive funds from a bonus, asset sale or other income source

Would having a financial cushion help you sleep more soundly at night? If yes, you may want to create a liquidity bucket designed as a psychological safety net. Or perhaps, do you have more assets than needed for your lifestyle? If yes, taking advantage of historically low interest rates to boost returns or gifting strategies in your legacy bucket would make sense.

• Amplify returns; for example, investing the proceeds of a residential mortgage. The record low rates currently available may make this an attractive option. However, these low rates won’t last indefinitely

While the liquidity bucket can be a back-of-the-envelope calculation, the lifestyle and legacy buckets are more nuanced and you should seek professional advice. Once you have a detailed view of your cash flow requirements, your J.P. Morgan team can help you structure a liquidity plan. Included in that analysis could be portfolio stress testing to see how your investments are likely to perform under various potential market conditions, including a market downturn.

• Purchase real estate; having ready access to funds can give you a buying advantage in a competitive market

• Transfer wealth. The Applicable Federal Rates (AFR) also are at an historical low. As this rate by law must be applied to intra-family loans, today’s low rate can help you transfer more wealth to your heirs; possibly sooner than originally planned. Your heirs, in turn, could invest the loan proceeds. For U.S. taxpayers there is potentially an additional benefit: Interest payments on loans used for investment purposes may be tax deductible.

What Are You Most Thankful for in 2020? It's been an unusual year, that's for sure. But even a pandemic has a silver lining

Kevin Cyrus M. Gutierrez

Belle Morales

“Year 2020 has been a remarkable year not only in the Philippines but also for the rest of the world. In these trying times, where numbers are rising and the economy has been declining, it is difficult to be optimistic.

“Grateful for NATURE this 2020! This pandemic made me realize how to be free from all the ‘extras in life’ we actually do not need much of! Six months of no spa appointments is actually doable!!!

At the same time, we also learn to appreciate the underrated blessings we usually take for granted: having your loved ones arrive home safely, having food on the table, having safe drinking water, having enough money to buy necessities, and most importantly, having a healthy mind, body and soul.

It made me value TIME to spend with family and loved ones, put emphasis on GOOD HEALTH and utilize TECHNOLOGY only when necessary.”

Ariel Arias “2020 is a Pandemic Year and I am most thankful for still being ALIVE! The quarantine has given me a deeper appreciation of all the blessings I have— family, friends and God’s bountiful provisions. And as I am most grateful for all these, the longing to reach out and share has even become stronger.”

Niña Angelina Cuenca

Mannix Peña

“This 2020, I’m grateful for the gift of time. To be able to pause and be in the moment with family, to slowly strengthen my faith, be in touch with nature, and to meaningfully connect with people.

“One thing that I am most grateful for during this time has been the kindness of friends and family. Having the opportunity to slow down and to be more thoughtful in my work, in the bonds that I build and where I spend my time and energy.

This pandemic has brought a slew of challenges, but with a positive mind, it is after all—just a pause.”

I have reconnected with people I have met over the past few years as well as formed new relationships. The result has brought me incredible joy and pleasure and a sense of authentic connection in a time of physical distancing.”

It is indeed a year full of struggles and tests, but we are very optimistic and enthusiastic of the coming year 2021!”

Presidential Chronicles

The world waits to find out if America voted for change or for chaos. A distinguished panel consisting of Harry K. Thomas, Jr., former US Ambassador to the Philippines; Lila R. Shahani, former UNESCO Philippines Secretary-General; Lisa Kircher Pagkalinawan, Chair of Democrats Abroad Philippines; Cindy Domingo, Human Rights activist; and Victor Manhit, Founder and Managing Director of the Stratbase Group and policy think-tank ADRI and Asia Society Philippines’ Board of Advisors member, discussed how the 2020 elections would be very pivotal, and would impact US-Philippine relations

Harry K. Thomas, Jr. “The question is, how do you increase collaboration? Whether you like it or not, President Trump has actually initially increased foreign aid and military aid to the Philippines before drastically cutting it, although the Philippines remains the number one recipient in Southeast Asia. So how do you come to peaceful agreements with China? You continue to talk, continue to use ASEAN, though one of the frustrations we had when I was there was that ASEAN didn’t have a common position because they disagree on who has rights to the western Philippine Sea… Also, for the Philippines, are you just going to rely on the United States for assistance, or are you going to build up your military? That is a decision that has to be made—a very difficult decision for a developing nation with an uneven economy.” 15

Lila R. Shahani “One of the reasons why I really deeply respect Joe Biden is because he is self-avowedly a multilateralist… At least with Joe Biden, you have a) a respect for science; b) an adherence to what those scientists recommend; and c) you have a relative humility with respect to America’s position vis-a-vis the entire world."

Lisa Kircher Pagkalinawan “Family-based immigration is really important for Filipinos. There are so many Filipino-Americans who petition their family members from the Philippines and Trump has been trying to stop that and turn it more towards merit-based immigration, and also more towards slowing down and stopping immigration as much as he can, so I think that’s one thing we can look forward to in a Biden presidency, his restoration of familybased immigration and more of an open approach. A lot of Republicans are antiimmigration because they think it’s bad for the economy, and all the studies that I’ve read show that it’s actually good for the economy… And the global economy always does better when the U.S. is doing well.”

MH | I N C A S E Y O U M I S S E D I T

REUTERS / Carlo Allegri

Cindy Domingo “Joe Biden is going to have to establish internationally—not only in Asia, but internationally—trust amongst nations, to become the moral leader that the country needs, and to be able to bring countries together, as well as his own country in order to deal with the health crisis.

Victor Manhit “The Biden presidency needs to accept that the U.S. moves around in a multipolar world. It cannot be at the center of global challenges. [Biden] needs to regain the trust and confidence of its regional allies.”

He would have to rejoin the WHO, the United Nations, the Paris climate agreement… all those are necessary to re-establish the United States’ position in the world, and to re-establish trust that is going to be needed to fight this pandemic.”

“No country, even one as powerful as ours, can go at it alone against challenges that respect no borders and cannot be contained by walls. We need to look for opportunities to strengthen cooperation with democratic friends...to fortify our collective capabilities.” Joe Biden Foreign Policy Speech at the Graduate Center at CUNY, New York July 2019

he presentations and subsequent discussion addressed the different dimensions to education. There was the “retail” aspect, presented by Feli Atienza of the Chinese International School of Manila, through the lens of a primary and secondary school. Henry Motte-Munoz of Edukasyon.ph presented the “market realities” aspect through an edtech startup providing a much needed resource portal. And Dr. Michael Alba, president of Far Eastern University (FEU), presented the real-life “innovation” response by an institute of higher learning that shows an effective way forward. The reactors, Elizabeth Zobel de Ayala of Teach for the Philippines, and Emmanuel de Dios, professor emeritus at the University of the Philippines School of Economics, brought their well-rounded perspectives to the discussion.

In Praise Of The Everyday

Kristoffer Ardeña is one of the most exciting young artists in the Philippine art scene today. Pre-pandemic, he divided his time between the Philippines and Spain; today he works out of his Negros studio. During Art Fair Philippines 2020, he presented a solo show with the Tropical Futures Institute called “Basahan,” a rumination of the everyday in the context of the socio-economic conditions that surround his studio and practice. He shares some images from that exhibition

Detail of Ghost Painting (Invisible / Woven Deconstructed Retaso Rug Category): Still Life Using Black Plastic Mesh Set

W

hat is painting? How is it a painting? Why is it a painting? Painting has a long and tradition in Western art history. We have movements and stylistic periods that have defined this medium. For me, I wanted to situate my critical experiment on the formal aspects of what, how, and why painting is a painting. I believe in innovating within these physical parameters. A paradox, really, when you think about the notion of invisibility. Well, perhaps, it’s kinda stupid? Perhaps it’s actually relatively easy to understand. Think about it, when looking at a painting, one of the primary traditional component of it is color. We see color. We experience color. Color defines image-making in painting. But what if we didn’t see color in a painting, will it still be considered painting? Well, if you twist it further, is color something you necessarily “see” in that traditional sense? What happens to transparency or the nonpresence of color? What happens if the binding agent to which the pigments of color we bound to, are to be used to paint; will it still be painting? We have to challenge the formal notion of painting. Well, as an artist, I think that’s one of the primary functions we have as artists living in the time we belong to. - Kristoffer Ardeña BASAHAN ZINE / TROPICAL FUTURES for ART Fair PH 2020
