Dreams What is life without dreams? As clichéd as it sounds, dreams can and do come true, and experiencing a dream become reality is an incredibly special feeling. Bringing Manila House to life was one such dream that was two years in the making. Even today, taking in the solihiya-lined entrance foyer painted a bright cherry red, it’s hard to believe that what began as a conversation among friends actually came to life. And we added to that dream by making our inaugural annual event celebrating the best of the Filipino spirit, Ang Pagdiriwang, happen at the end of September.

In Cased You Missed It Crafty Chocolate The Art of Diplomacy Visions of the Past

The fabulously stylish and ageless Bonnae Gokson knows all about turning dreams into reality. The Hong Kong-based creative visionary has been making dreams come through throughout her multifaceted career. As she has proven time and time again through her scrumptious cake shop, Ms. B’s Cakery, a dream can be embodied in a beautifully designed cake, satisfying emotional, aesthetic and culinary desires all at once. She comes to Manila House this month to launch her latest book, another paean to dreams: Weddings, Butterflies & the Sweetest Dreams. Both informative, elegant and sumptuous, the book shows you how to make the wedding - or celebration - of your dreams happen. But dreams don’t have to be grand. At Manila House, we cater to dreams big and small, be it creating a floral dreamscape for a formal event at our ballroom, or making the perfect gin tonic to be enjoyed on our outdoor deck on a particularly balmy afternoon. It could be our famous Manila House Fried Chicken - our Members have said they literally dream about this dish - or the sight of an exquisite Juan Luna portrait no one ever thought they’d encounter in the flesh.

MEET TH E S TA FF

Get to Know: Yelle Dela Cruz On her first day of work, our new Marketing Manager was plunged straight into coordination work for our signature annual event, Ang Pagdiriwang. The De La Salle graduate took it all in stride, and continues to display grace under pressure How did you get into the marketing/ hospitality field?

and I want to have made a significant and positive impact on the organization.

I majored in Advertising Management in college and I gravitated towards events management after graduation. I spent more than two years traveling all over the country when I handled nationwide marketing events for a pharmaceutical company. I got to stay in fancy hotels and resorts in the Philippines and became fascinated by how these properties were managed and marketed. In 2015, I joined a five-star hotel as an Events Executive and in 2016, I became an Events Manager handing the Social Events segment from event sales, events marketing, and event operations.

What are the challenges a marketing and communications department face in a social media-driven, multiplatform world?

What makes working in a private members club an appealing prospect for you? Working in an environment where you meet a diverse mix of people with varied interests and working on different passion projects excite me. I am perpetually curious and I like that I get to learn something new everyday. How do you see your career evolving? Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Having to adapt like a chameleon in an everchanging social media environment and in a time where the audience’s attention span is shorter than a goldfish's is definitely the biggest challenge marketing practitioners face today. You have to be able to wear many hats and be an art director, a copywriter, a photographer, an events organizer, a host, and a handful of other characters. You also have to juggle different tasks and projects simultaneously and be able to manage your time well. What do you like to do in your spare time? I love spending time at the beach with family and friends, swimming, listening and singing along to music, and reading books (currently reading Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur). I also enjoy taking photos and curating my Instagram feed.

Ten-years from now, I see myself bringing new ideas and initiatives into the company

'It looked roughly finished and just didn’t match the romantic setting.’ She saw the need for a book that 'shows multi-cultural celebrations in a more refined way of capturing images. And since I love to pair my cakes with beautiful settings and share them on Instagram,

The Complexity of Nostalgia Whether drenched in color or set in monochrome, Matthew Adam Ross’s canvasses are an invitation to contemplation. No wonder his art is collected by the likes of Lauren Hutton, Jonah Hill, Ellen Page, Vincent Gallo, Julie Delpy, Catherine Keener and the Rothschild family

atthew Adam Ross’ paintings, with their echoes of Cy Twombly, albeit far more exuberant in tone, have been describe as inhabiting “a space of beautiful chaos.” The young Los Angeles-based painter, who began his career in New York with a strong minimalist aesthetic that has since evolved, likes to think of his work as being about the balance between two opposing poles. "When I look at my work - it really is about a balance between insanity and refinement,” he explained in a 2017 interview for Flaunt Magazine. "If I add something that intensifies the piece I like

to balance it with something more neutral and subdued.” For his Manila House exhibition, entitled The Complexity of Nostalgia, Ross presents a series of paintings that are cerebral in composition, yet resonate with emotion, making them seem familiar and intriguing at the same time. That familiarity evokes a unique kind of nostalgia. The "complexity of nostalgia" is the most accurate and concise manner by which I can describe this series of works created. After a year of working virtually exclusively with metals and concretes, and limited exposure to traditional artistic methods,

Thai Sensation A young Thai artist brings his mesmerizing multilayered art to Manila House this month

Memory and Transformation, Mixed media, 2015

Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew (b. 1980) is one of Thailand’s most exciting and widely admired new-generation artists. By painting over layers of carefully draped thread and netting, he has developed a unique mixing of media that produces mesmerizing threedimensional, ‘holographic’ artworks, often portraits of his own family members. A devout Buddhist, Nimmalaikaew’s distinct style illustrates and explains the inevitable cycle of birth, aging, and death in all our lives, as explained in Buddhist philosophy.

The artist in his studio

I have transposed what I have learned onto these canvases. They are the result of raw organic expression, and pure experience. They aren't planned, but rather, discovered. I bottled up everything I learned and relied on natural instinct to evoke it. I wanted to create paintings that made me reminisce on the past with affection. Nostalgia is complex because of how abstract and difficult it is to describe relatively for me. I can only show it, as a roadmap of the synapses that fire off when I channel it.

He was awarded the Sovereign Asian Art Prize (2006), Purchase Prize in the 3rd Bangkok Triennale (2012), and the highly coveted 1st prize in the Thai National Exhibition of Art (2005, 2009). His works have been exhibited in Thailand’s Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and National Gallery.

The Complexity of Nostalgia opens October 9 and runs until early November. 11

The Art of Diplomacy The second edition of the ASIA SOCIETY X MANILA HOUSE AMBASSADOR SERIES featured the popular Sung Y. Kim, the US Ambassador to the Philippines

A

nahaw was packed to overflowing one April evening, with Members of both Manila House and Asia Society, students, as well as foreign policy enthusiasts, to listen Ambassador Kim talk about US-Philippine relations and his personal experiences working as a career diplomat in the Foreign Service. The talk was billed as America in the Philippines Today, moderated by award-winning broadcast journalist Karen Davila. Asia Society Philippines’ Chair, Doris Ho, who gave her welcoming remarks talking about the relevance of this dialogue in a time when both countries face drastic changes under new administrations. Ambassador Kim expressed optimism for the future of the relationship between the US and Philippines. He mentioned a few milestones, such as the 70th anniversary of Fulbright in the Philippines and the fifth anniversary of YSEALI (a youth leadership fellowship by the US Embassy). Davila began by asking methods of communicating with current President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte, given the vocal nature of his opinions about the US, to which he responded kindly. “Part of diplomacy is understanding the other party… President Duterte is quite charming and I enjoyed my meetings with him” said Ambassador Kim. While discussing this matter he referenced the historic negotiations between North and South Korea and commended President Moon Jae-in for his diplomatic skills and drive to progressing toward a more inclusive and united future. He then followed this up with the local example of the Cesar Basa Air Base being a representation of the diplomatic cooperation between the Philippines and the US.

well as maritime security and awareness. He quickly answered other questions about American expatriates in the country, Philippine – US VISA concerns, and more discussion about military cooperation between the two states.

His Excellency asserted that despite the media’s framing and what has been said by either leader of both states, he believes that the relationship is so deeply rooted between the Philippines and US and that leadership doesn’t completely dictate the state of relations between them.

Ho closed the program by applauding the inspirational nature of the Ambassador’s story, being an immigrant from Korea in the US and now representing them in Asia. He acknowledged the privilege he felt being in his position and implored the numerous students in the audience to consider work in public service.

When asked about America’s stance on a shift to Asia, he said US Foreign Policy is still “strongly focused” on the world’s largest continent. “I think it’s pretty obvious we’re shifting”, Ambassador Kim mentioned. During his opening speech he did recognize American companies in the Philippines like Chevron being among the top non-individual taxpayers in the country as well as being some of the top exporters as well, which preemptively supported his later points. The Ambassador refrained from commenting on Philippine tactics regarding the west Philippine Sea, because he felt he wasn't "the right person to speak on the Philippine government’s methods of negotiations.” During the question and answer session, the Ambassador spoke bout how America’s mission in the Philippines is now focused on aiding disaster preparedness and relief as

The Ambassador Series is a series of four dialogue-style events aimed at getting to know the diplomats serving in The Philippines on a more intimate level. This event signals the long-term partnership between Manila House and Asia Soceity, and was held with the support of Malagos Farmhouse.

P

aulo Alcazaren and Manolo Quezon mixed history, society, architecture and urban planning in a double-billed talk that was entertaining and illuminating.

Alas, less than a third of Burnham’s plan was executed, a casualty of, among other things, US politics and budget cuts. Even then, there was a realization that Manila’s population would swell, and provisions should be made for this eventuality. Manila’s city planners were also aware of the need for anti-flooding measures, but no real lasting systems were installed.

According to Alcazaren, a renowned urban planner, landscape architect and design principal of PGAA International, there were several plans laid out for the city of Manila during the pre-war era. One of them was drawn up by the famous American architect Daniel Burnham, who had also outlined plans for Baguio. Manila was envisioned indeed as a kind of American metropolis in the Orient, similar to Washington, D.C. and Chicago - graceful, expansive, classically beautiful, with the Manila Bay waterfront as the focal point . Burnham dispatched William Parsons from his firm to provide designs, drawings, specifications, and estimates for all public buildings in the city.

Journalist, columnist, TV host and historian Manolo Quezon added a dash of gossip and humor to the lecture, talking about the glamorous social scene that swiftly evolved in Manila once the Americans came to town. Not that Filipinos mixed all that freely with the Americans; much to our chagrin, there were social and sports clubs that specifically excluded Filipinos, even high-born dignitaries like Manuel Nieto, aide-to-camp of the first Philippine president of the Commonwealth. 15
