A Quiet Revolution

In This Issue

Call it a series of serendipitous events. A much-awaited exhibition by an artist better known for his furniture design had to be postponed, leaving a vacuum in the Club’s September art calendar. At the same time, we had begun planning for what is intended to become our annual signature event that would honor the best of the Filipino spirit, slated for the end of September. The challenge was to put together, at short notice, an exhibition that would communicate that spirit in a way that was both subtle and revolutionary.

And then I walked into León Gallery one night for the birthday party of the auction house’s young founder, Jaime Ponce de Leon. Gracing the walls were portraits of varying sizes and periods, but each one with an undeniably mesmerizing power. Most of the portraits were painted by Filipino artists, and a few were the works of artists who had a Philippine connection. There and then I thought, what a coup it would be if I could convince Jaime to lend us his portraits, which were not for sale, by the way.

On Show Beloved: Portraits of Women

To my absolute surprise, he agreed immediately and the next few weeks, in between his travels, it was a flurry of meetings and discussions to figure out the logistics. Co-curating the exhibition would be attorney and art enthusiast Toñico Manahan. While there were a sprinkling of male subjects among the portraits on display at León Gallery that night, we agreed that the Manila House show would feature only portraits of women. It is indeed a rare and delightful treat to have the works of Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, Vicente Manansala, Carlos “Botong” Francisco, Oscar Zalameda, among others, represented in Manila House in one spectacular, yet intimate show we call Beloved. To gaze at the portraits of the women so beloved is to enter not just another world and another time, but to initiate an ongoing conversation with both the artist and the sitter.

MEET TH E S TA FF

Get to Know: Joey Nagrampa He got his start on cruise ships, and now manages Avenue Bar, where he indulges his passion for mixology How did you get into bartending and mixology?

Beer or wine?

When I was a kid, I loved mixing different kinds of soda to my glass - Royal Tru-Orange mixed with Sprite and Mountain Dew for example. I also loved watching the bartender do “bar flair” (flipping bottles) while making drinks at the bar; that’s what inspired me to become a bartender. I also take pride in customer service, as I love meeting people. It gives you a chance to know and learn something from them. And it also gives me pleasure if the guest is happy and satisfied with my service at the bar.

I choose wine over beer. Wine is more beneficial to our body as we age and won’t give you a belly like beer does!

What’s the best approach to take when a member has had too much to drink but wants another round? The best approach is to find a person with them who is sober, and explain to them why the intoxicated person needs to be cut off from drinking at that particular point. That way you avoid direct confrontation with the intoxicated person. If the intoxicated person is alone, I recommend approaching him or her in a professional manner, explain why you not serving another round, because your priority is safety. Also, make sure you have somebody with you as a back-up in case the situation becomes worse.

Gin or vodka? I prefer gin to vodka. Gin brings a wide variety of flavors to your mouth and it’s refreshing each time you have a sip. What is the secret to a great cocktail? Of the classic cocktails, which is your favorite? A good cocktail should be easy to make, with ingredients that are always available and easy to find. My favorite classic cocktail is Cuba Libre, which is rum and coke with lime. What is your dream cocktail? My dream cocktail? If I could, I would create a drink that removes hangovers instantly!!! That would be my dream cocktail.

Garlic Garcia An entertainment industry veteran, Garlic Garcia has worked with the best in Philippine entertainment, running top-rating musical variety shows and reality talent searches on national television, as well as mounting premiere live events and concerts How did Filipino music come to be one of your passions? When I think of how much I love Filipino music, I would liken it to a love affair. I don’t remember how it started actually. I just remember heartfelt moments scored by some of the best music in the world – From Kuh Ledesma’s voice that my father would play loudly in the mornings to to wake us up to go to school… to listening incessantly to the very first CD my sisters and I owned which was the Smokey Mountain album by Ryan Cayabyab… to the very first song I learned to sing in the shower which was Take Me Out of the Dark by Gary Valenciano. These voices and many others have left an indelible mark on me and have become the songs I carry in my heart.

"I am a woman with a rock and roll vibe and a soul filled with soul." Who are the emerging Filipino singers/performers we should look out for?

This passion for Filipino music grew even more as it led me to a career that allowed me the privilege of working with the country’s finest singers, musicians and composers. Collaborating with them, learning from them and their creative processes and helping provide platforms for them to shine and showcase the best of Filipino music has been a great source of fulfillment for me professionally and personally.

One of my greatest joys is being part of reality talent searches. There is something truly special and humbling in being part of discovering and developing talents, becoming part of their journey to stardom and helping make their dreams come true. You can’t go wrong listening and patronizing these three singer/performers who are unfazed by fame and have remained grateful and humble through the years - Power belter and super performer Morisette can outsing anyone to the painful poignant melodies that come to life with the voice of Moira Dela Torre to the new generation total performer and all around good guy Darren Espanto.

What would be in your OPM playlist? I always start my mornings listening to Praise and Worship music from Hillsong or as interpreted by Filipino artists. It’s the best way to start any day really.

You have a beautiful singing voice! What do you like to perform when you are persuaded (after much prodding!) to sing at a party?

My OPM playlist is very diverse. On a daily basis, I have the practice of choosing an artist and listening to his/her music all day. Today I could be listening to Martin Nievera sing about Forever and the next day I could be listening to Regine Velasquez belting out her Pangako or I could Walk Down the Road with Cynthia Alexander or be rapping along to Francis M on Cold Summer Nights or I could be having my own mini concert in the car singing while grooving to Ikot Ikot by one of my singing champions, Sarah Geronimo.

I am a woman with a rock and roll vibe and a soul filled with soul. And truth be told, I don’t need much prodding to sing because I truly love to sing. (LOL) There is a unique high when you get to belt out an Aretha Franklin or Adele song or emote to an OPM song. My standard song choices range from Adele’s Rolling in the Deep to Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N' Roses to What’s Love Got to Do With It by Tina Turner or Respect by Aretha Franklin to Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice.

Inasmuch as I love listening to timeless hits of different OPM greats that range from Pop to Indie music, I also love hearing new voices. Recently, I have been exploring the underground world of rap and hiphop with the music of Ex Batallion, Gloc 9 and Shanti Dope and listening to new music with a global sound that has found a massive following online from young, up and coming artists like Ben and Ben to Jess Connelly to Julie Ann San Jose to Janina Vela and Donny Pangilinan. I believe its important to always know what’s out there and what’s being created, and to gain an appreciation for all kinds of Filipino music.

For Filipino music, I have always loved singing Gary V’s Sana Maulit Muli or Ogie Alcasid’s Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang or Freestyle’s So Slow. Even if I wanted to sing a Regine song, I unfortunately cannot hit her notes for the life of me!

Gina Godinez Music is a constant in the life of Gina Godinez. She’s discovered and managed musical talent, produced concerts and promoted original Pilipino music (OPM). And she’s also raised a family of musicians and music lovers. Here, she sings the praises of music and talent that last the test of time

How did music become a part of your life? We grew up with music in our home! My lola, Lulu Corrales Razon, was an opera singer and maestra, and she would teach some students at home so we would hear beautiful voices all day! My dad always had the best sound system and the latest records playing at home, from Frank Sinatra to The Beatles... All genres of music were the soundtrack of our daily living. Gina with her mom, Conchita Razon

What do you love most about producing concerts and representing musical talent?

"For me, a good singer is someone who has power in a quiet and steady voice."

The creative process of production is what I love. From concept to design, direction and execution. I don't like the numbers or the drama - i.e., problems - of production. Discovering new and exceptional talent is exciting! It usually comes when you are not looking. Finding good combinations of talent for one show I find very interesting and challenging.

The Philippines is a one-stop shop of singers and musicians. We are so blessed with talent here and it is growing by the minute!

How has Filipino music/OPM evolved since you started in the industry?

What are your personal musical tastes/favorites?

I was exposed to OPM in the 70's when the government encouraged radio stations to play it on the radio. New Pilipino sound was born in our generation, The new sound that was much influenced by the western world, made the transition from all-English to a new language, Taglish, to full-on Tagalog.

The music of the 70's , both Filipino and foreign. I don't know if the best music was born then or because I was at the age where one had music plus friends to add to the experience of the time.

For me, 70's OPM was at first awkward but fun, and later became and still is my go-to, feel-good, comfort music.

You come from a musical family. Do you all jam together at family reunions? We used to jam all the time especially when I was in school in Hawaii and California. My sister Vicky and I played guitars and sang whenever we could. In the car, the park, walking. On the floor of our bedroom is where we would jam the most.

What do you look for in a singer or musician? Are there any emerging talents to look out for in the Philippines? The Philippines is full of talent so it’s very hard to say who or which one. For me, a good singer is someone who has power in a quiet and steady voice... That is what I am attracted to. It doesn’t mean that he or she will be the next superstar. But that for me is a singer who will stay on.

One day we asked our brother [Martin Nievera] to sing.... He has not stopped singing since then. He doesn't sing on the floor anymore. He prefers the stage and he has better guitar players now!

What is the best thing about the Filipino Spirit? As we prepare to host our inaugural celebration of the best of Filipino culture, cuisine, music and art, we asked Members to share their thoughts about the indomitable Filipino spirit

Miguel Miñana

Jim Ayala

Julie Jalandoni-Boschi

Two things: One, the resilience and ability to bounce back from challenges. We’ve been hit by the worst typhoon the world has known, but Tacloban and its people have bounced back.

We see the best in each other and are positive about the future. So we are generally happy and hopeful. This is why everyone I have met all over the world has Pinoy friends they cherish!

The Filipino spirit is uncrushable, fortified by faith, with the ability to laugh even during desperate times and possessed of the unshakable certainty that tomorrow will be better.

I believe that the best thing about the Filipino Spirit is our resilience. We do not let many things keep us down. When facing natural disasters and difficult situations, the Filipino Spirit allows us to find joy in the hardest of situations, and puts a smile on our faces.

Second, our ability to smile at almost everything – in long queues, in the rain… except in traffic!

Beloved:

Portraits of Women León Gallery shares exquisite portraits from its private collection in this exclusive exhibition.

A

ssembled from the collection of León Gallery, Beloved is a special and rare exhibit of portraits, emphasizing the importance of portraiture as art, with a focus on women as subjects. Most, if not all, of the portraits were commissioned by persons who loved the subjects, hence the title of this exhibit. We live in an era where almost everyone is a photographer. Photographs have flooded our everyday lives to the point of sensory overload. A portrait painting, unlike a photograph, has so much capacity for expression, emotion, power and passion. We submit that a portrait poses the greatest challenge to a painter: to capture reality -- not only a subject’s physical beauty but also the nuances of her personality or the essence of her soul. The exhibit includes paintings by Juan Luna, Carlos “Botong” Francisco, Vicente Manansala, Fernando Amorsolo, Tomas Concepcion, Oscar Zalameda, Antonio Garcia Llamas, and Fernando Alvarez de Sotomayor y Zaragosa. “A portrait is perhaps one of the highest forms of art, and an expression of love,” muses Jaime Ponce de Leon, founder of León Gallery “No one commissions a portrait of someone they don’t esteem, much less love. A portrait is intimate and intricate - its intention is to convey the essence of the sitter while at the same time conveying the emotion the person who commissioned the portrait feels for the subject. And only the most gifted portraitists can achieve this.” The portrait artist becomes, in effect, witness and archivist, both passive and active, because the ensuing portrait is the result of a private conversation.

L.A. Story A young artist making waves in Los Angeles and beyond introduces his intriguing abstracts to Manila House in October

Matthew Adam Ross is an artist based in Los Angeles whose works explore in depth the challenges of contemporary urban life. Ross is fascinated with morphology, particularly in western society, and the effect that weak historical continuity and the ambiguity of national identity have on the progression of American contemporary thought. Ross employs the use of low brow, raw materials, such as various structural metals, concretes, paints, zip ties, and rubble to create objects of ruin that document and record the passage of time, and artifacts that mirror the metaphorical and literal infrastructural American identity, but with international resonance.

Poetry Afternoon On a rainy day, three contemporary Filipino poets – Lourd de Veyra, Quintin Pastrana and Monique Obligacion - braved the sudden downpour to read their work to a rapt audience. The best known of the group, De Veyra delivered a particularly electrifying performance – not surprising, considering he is a spoken word artist and a broadcaster. He graciously shared one of his poems with us. READING LANG LEAV MY FUCKING HEAD EXPLODES Followed by my heart, Bursting out of its ribcage Like cheap pork meat during a New Year’s fireworks safety demo. Blood down the gutter picking up bits and pieces of bone and brain matter from the sidewalk on j.p. rizal and aurora where I know they will soon attract rats giant roaches as I whisper to myself, “scatterbrain” and “rain” those words actually rhyme with blood still flowing down the pavement maybe this is how poetry was truly meant to be written, of a loss of a deeper, nobler tone of violet, or perhaps even purple the gravity of intense contemplation on poetry that can actually find similar music in the words “dishes” and “delicious” the way Eliot made celestial music with “pyre” with “suspire” and “fire,” — take care of the sound

and sense takes care of itself they say, my absence of consciousness reminding me of the absence of absence, they say, of poetry as abcess , they say, or, what the fuck, let’s throw around the metaphors more mixed-up than cocktails by a bartender on acid, they say in the resilience of the insipid, they say, stupid is a cloud, they say, As elegant as Orocan tracing the source of all that genius: just follow the trail of ants. Stop aligning right or left: Pure poetic power emanates from center text, The spaces between are what Lang Leav uses To shatter my heart Into a thousand tiny crystals You can melt on aluminum foil And smoke till your gums bleed And the cops blast through your door Complete with TV news cameras.

Lourd de Veyra has published three books of poetry, four collections of essays, and a novel. Works for News 5's News and Public Affairs Department and plays guitar for a band called Kapitan Kulam

Frank Capra said he thought drama was When actors shed tears. But true drama is when the audience cries. Franz Kafka reminded us: In the struggle between you and the world, Bet on the world.

A Matter of Science Our Monday Minds speaker for July, Mylene Abiva, President and CEO of Felta Multimedia, discussed innovative approaches to STEM education

S

cience and Technology (S&T) play key roles in modern society as it becomes more knowledge-based and competitive, according to Mylene Abiva, whose long and multi-awarded career in education modernization focuses on developing the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills of both young girls and boys.

“If still fewer young people pursue careers within S&T, and if the negative development is not turned around, companies will find it increasingly difficult to attract (and maintain) the right workforce in future”

As Barack Obama said when he addressed the National Academy of Sciences, “Think about new and creative ways to engage young people in science and engineering, like science festivals, robotics competitions, and fairs that encourage young people to create, build, and invent – to be makers of things, not just consumers of things.”

For Abiva, one solution would be to implement “an inquiry-based program, promoting science and technology among children and youth,” which Felta’s many intiatives, such as First Lego League, The Robotics Academy and iCreate Café address.

”If still fewer young people pursue careers within S&T, and if the negative development is not turned around, companies will find it increasingly difficult to attract (and maintain) the right workforce in future,” she said.

Traditionally, girls are not attracted to STEM subjects, and Abiva wants to change that. “We address four areas of critical growth in girls’ schools: girls in STEM, girls as leaders, girls in the arts, girls and their mentors.”

It’s not only core subject skills are required from tomorrow’s workforce, but proficiency in such disciplines as Life and Career Skills, Learning and Innovation Skills, and Information, Media and Technology Skills.
