The Collective Memory Of Space: The Architecture Of Remembering And Forgetting

REGISTERED MEMORY THROUGH EXPERIENCE

Architecture that is classed as historically important is most often perceived And consequently treated as an expression of the past due to its existence Through ages, it’s been a vital source of reference for mankind to relate and Understand the past. This has been possible only through archaeology. Indeed many historic buildings that we admire exist now only because of a series Of reactive processes. Architecture as an adaptive, adaptable & responsive media has responded to the Past in its own way to build residences, places of worship, public places etc & Adapt. It also has been adaptive with relevance to the period incorporating Social, topographical and geographical transformation. Similarly it has Continued to cater to the present too.

HYPOTHESIS: INTERACTIVE MEMORY OF THE SPACE ITSELF

embedding memories through spaces

inspirations architecture palimpsests

THE KOLUMBA ART MUSEUM BY PETER ZUMTHOR.

A FEW FINE EXAMPLES OF SIMILAR ATTEMPTS AND THESE ARCHITECTS HAVEN’T JUST LIMITED THIS TO THE PROJECTS BUT HAVE LET IT INFLUENCE THEIR STYLES TOO.

This sensitive adaptation here could serve to 1) liberate historical architecture from its constraints of being understood Through its past and facilitate a dialogue with the present that we are Familiar with. 2) preserve not just the remains, but also its history 3) simple understanding & efcient registry Particularly as an architectural solution for preventing decay of Heritage sites due to overprotective conservative legislation.

CONCLUSION: Thus, translating the language of the past & displaying it in a contemporary Manner by using architecture to NARRATE the context, process of its Exploration & technology would not just bring clarity to the perception and Understanding of the people but also a sense of awareness and intimacy to Preserve their past.

n a r r at o r i u m

CASTELVICHIO MUSEUM BY CARLO SCARPA

Historical remnants, Architectural or Non-Architectural, perceived as a representative of Past, physically exists in the present too. They are a part of the REALM. This existence of the past in the Present can challenge the whole notion of the term ‘historic’ itself due to its Potential to hold more history. Further, at present, the above has gone unnoticed as these historic references Are experienced isolated by the context they’re ‘preserved’ in, leading to their limited understanding. Thus, architecture being a responsive medium - should it not respond to this past? - should it not continue to undergo Transformations relevant to the present & add to the existing history, Thus creating a PALIMPSEST ? - should it not serve as a language or an interactive tool to relate the past with the present ?

MUZIRIS VISITIOR’S CENTER (live project) INTRODUCTION: Search for India's ancient city -Archaeologists working on India's south-west coast believe they may have solved the mystery of the location of a major port which was key to trade between India and the Roman Empire - Muziris, in the modern-day state of Kerala. -Key evidence Pattanam is the only site in the region to produce architectural features and material contemporary to the period. -Mystery disappearance Muziris became important because of the Romans' interest in trading, and their desire to have contact with regions beyond the reach of conquest and set up trading routes with these places.

AIM: -TO CREATE A RESPONSIVE & SENSITIVE ARCHITECTURE THAT NOT ONLY ADAPTS & RELATES TO THE SITE BUT ALSO NARRATE ITS ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONTEXT - AS A PALIMPSEST THAT CONTEMPLATES WHAT REMAINS OF THE PAST.

THE ANCIENT TRADE ROUTES OF THE WORLD

OBJECTIVES: - to create an architecture that balances out traditional & contemporary concepts which is a dialog in itself. - to dene a space that can redene the function, purpose & potential of a museum that just exhibits relics - an aesthetic approach that shows a perfect translation in terms of design strategy and materials, Thus creating a tangible relationship between the site & the architecture. - a sustainable approach through sensitive manipulation of locally available materials, be site specic or Regionally specic. Energy and other services to make the Building self-dependent.

SCOPE: - the scope of thesis will extend upto exhibiting the layering of history clearly dened in a present

LIMITATIONS: - regulatory norms of archaeological survey of india (asi) and unesco. - site restrictions in terms of building in a regulated zone and linking the structure To the prohibited zone. - limited & specic program for minimal intervention & maximum preservation.

introduction

Context as an EXPERIENCE. - create a site originated architecture - gives an opportunity to experiment by depicting the architecture in a Transitional manner through movement, design, material and the structure with respect to the context. - usage of site specic and locally available materials being in abundance. Eg: excavated soil, deforested timber etc.

1. arikamedu, puducherry Arikamedu is an archaeological site located at a distance of 1 km from Ariyankuppam, where Mortimer Wheeler conducted his best-known excavation in the 1940s. According to Wheeler, Arikamedu was a Tamil ď€ shing village which was formerly a major port dedicated to bead making and trading with Roman traders. It ourished for centuries until the Romans left. Various Roman artifacts, such as a large number of amphorae bearing the mark of Roman potter schools VIBII, CAMURI and ITTA, have been found at the site, supporting the view on an ancient trade between Rome and the ancient Tamil country.

2.ST. AUGUSTINE'S TOWER GOA

ARCHITECTURAL REMAINS

This highly visible landmark, a 46M-HIGH TOWER served as a BELFRY and formed part of the facade of a magniď€ cent Church. The tower is ONE OF THE FOUR TOWERS of St. Augustine Church that once stood at the site. Initially built of laterite and colossal in size, it had four storeys. The Tower was meant to serve as a belfry and the Church had eight richly adorned chapels and four altars and a convent with numerous cells attached to it. The church was abandoned in 1835 due to the repressive policies of the Portuguese government, which resulted in the eviction of many religious orders from Goa. This remnant, the renowned St. Augustine's tower is all that remains of what was once one of the largest buildings in Goa -- The Augustinian Monastery.

Lenggong valley was brought up to unesco world heritage status in june 2012. Prominent archaeological ndings around the valley include 10,000 year old perak man’s skeleton and the 40,000 year old layer of the toba volcanic ash. Inspired by the meticulous and highly time consuming work of the archaeologists, from excavation up to PROCESSING AND ANALYSING THE FINDINGS. It stimulated the design team to ANALYSE THE VERTEBRAE and developed it into individual components which are then linked up as a STRUCTURAL SYSTEM that would conform to the CONTOURS AND SITE BOUNDARY. Immense research was undertaken in nding a LIGHTWEIGHT AND STRONG MATERIAL TO TAKE THE FORM, the idea is to avoid deep excavation to preserve the potential antiquities that lies underneath the ground surface.

3. NEW ACROPOLIS MUSEUM / BERNARD TSCHUMI ARCHITECTS, ATHENS, GREECE

THE ACROPOLIS MUSEUM is an ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE-SPECIFIC MUSEUM, housing more than 3.000 FAMOUS ARTEFACTS from the Athenian Acropolis, the most signicant SANCTUARY OF THE ANCIENT CITY. Located in the historical area of Makriyianni, southeast of the Rock of the Acropolis, the Museum NARRATES THE STORY OF LIFE ON THE ROCK FROM PREHISTORIC TIMES UNTIL THE END OF ANTIQUITY. From its opening in June 2009 until March 2012 more than 4 MILLION LOCAL AND FOREIGN VISITORS have passed through the Museum’s doors. Architect BERNARD TSCHUMI’S new Acropolis Museum replaced the old Museum ON THE ROCK OF THE ACROPOLIS. The new museum has a total area of 25,000 SQUARE METERS, with exhibition space of over 14,000 square meters, APPROXIMATELY TEN TIMES THE SIZE OF THE OLD MUSEUM.

LITERATURE STUDY 30

THE MUSEUM IS CONCEIVED AS A BASE, A MIDDLE ZONE AND A TOP, TAKING ITS FORM FROM THE ARCHEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION BELOW AND FROM THE ORIENTATION OF THE TOP FLOOR TOWARD THE PARTHENON. The top is the RECTANGULAR, GLASS-ENCLOSED, SKYLIT Parthenon Gallery, over 7 METERS HIGH and with a oor space of over 2,050 square meters (22,100 square ft). It is SHIFTED 23 DEGREES from the rest of the building to ORIENT IT DIRECTLY TOWARD THE ACROPOLIS. The middle - TRAPEZOIDAL in plan is a DOUBLE-HEIGHT space that soars to 10 meters (33 feet), accommodating the galleries from the archaic to the late roman period. A MEZZANINE FEATURES A BAR AND RESTAURANT with a PUBLIC TERRACE looking out toward the acropolis and MULTIMEDIA SPACE.

The visitor’s route is therefore a clear, three-dimensional loop with collections installed in chronological sequence, from pre-history through the late roman period. double-height galleries for the Archaic period Parthenon Gallery back down to the Roman Empire galleries out toward the Acropolis itself.
