Tom Cruise has been one of the world’s biggest movie stars for the past four decades. There have been endless rumours about his sexuality since the beginning of his career, largely thanks to his strange appearance in Endless Love. But he has always denied that he is gay, although he’s proud to admit he is into Scientology. It would seem the latter is the more embarrassing of the two. Cruise is now 57 and has a net worth of US$530 million, but is still single as he heads towards his sixtieth. He has been married to women three times of course: Mimi Rogers for three years, Nicole Kidman for 11, and Katie Holmes for six. Although he has acted in 50 movies, he has never

played a gay character. Nor have there been any major gay characters in his films. But no other male actor in cinematic history has taken their clothes off more times on film. That’s handy as we love male movie stars in the flesh. Despite this, Top Gun is regularly voted as the gayest film of all time. It even beats Brokeback Mountain, Priscilla, Birdcage, and The Wizard of Oz. In 2020 we will get our first look at the Top Gun sequel: Maverick. It may be a much shorter film than the original if they extract the gay subtext and make Iceman, Goose, and all the military locker room scenes look a lot straighter. So here’s Alphatribe’s pick of Cruise’s gayest movies:

THE PARADOX OF PORN AN INTERVIEW WITH WRITER DON SHEWEY

Released late 2018, "The Paradox of Porn: Notes on Gay Male Sexual Culture", aims to fill a significant gap in the resources available to gay men: a frank and honest discussion of the role of pornography in our lives. As the book states “Almost all gay men look at porn, hardly anyone talks about it” (apart from complaining about the death of Tumblr, of course, which happened after the book’s release).

Author Don Shewey is a New York-based writer, erotic mentor and psychotherapist whose practice specializes in sex and intimacy coaching. Over more than 20 years of conducting his private practice and running workshops at various gay men’s retreats, Shewey has collected hundreds of stories from men seeking to expand their sex lives and conducted surveys with gay men to collect even more insights. He took part in the Body Electric Schoool’s sacred intimacy training and has been publishing works on the role of porn in gay men’s sex lives since 1997. But more than just the sum of his roles, Shewey has devoted his life to being a pleasure activist: “I’m committed to healing the split between sexuality and spirituality in our culture,” he writes on the opening page of the book. This attitude and focus is embedded throughout the book when he describes his work with clients, how he decorates his writing desk with porn and fetish drawings, and how he has bannered the expression “Desire is a horse that wants to take you on a journey to spirit” above his treatment room. The Paradox of Porn is a unique book, an essential reflection on porn and gay male sexuality that any

focused on paradoxes that equally enable and disable. But Shewey’s original work, lacing personal insights with media references and experiences from his psychological sexual healing clients tallies the score: 5 negative characteristics and 7 positive aspects; 16 negative impacts and 31 positive opportunities. “Most gratifying to me has been the string of personal messages I’ve gotten from readers who appreciated the book on a couple of different fronts,” Shewey shared with AlphaTribe. “I write very personally about my own experience of pornography and sex, and as I had hoped that seems to have inspired many men to do their own life-review. Readers have shared with me detailed considerations of how the book made them think about their own sexual experiences and their own interactions with pornography in a way they never had before. And a number of people have commented that the scope of the book takes in a lot more than just pornography but gave them valuable guidance for navigating through many pockets of gay male social life.” Indeed, some of the feedback he has received has been from leaders in the community who have shared their relief that these subjects are spoken about so honestly. Sex memoirist and queer black science fiction writer, Samuel R Delany, who has been inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, calls it “THE self-help classic for our time.”

And there is a definite need for this in understanding gay porn. “Pornography has played a special role in the sex lives of gay men,” Shewey states. “It has taught us what desire between two men looks like, it has helped us figure out what turns us on, it has supported us in not feeling so alone, it has gotten us through times of loneliness and isolation, disease and disconnection, and it has contributed to many pleasurable orgasms. At the same time, the images from porn that are now ubiquious in our lives have shaped and often distorted our ideas about what sex is, what normal bodies look like, how people make connections, and how we feel about ourselves. Porn has been hugely liberating and hugely oppressive. And that’s the paradox of porn.” Shewey’s paradox evokes the approach taken by one of philosophy’s leading writers, a committed leatherman himself: Michel Foucault. Foucault’s work, too, often

Delany’s reference to The Paradox of Porn as a self-help book may come from the fact that beyond an analysis and consideration of the role porn can play in shaping gay sexuality, Shewey proposes several techniques to help gay men navigate their use of porn towards enabling a fulfilling sexual life, and his guidance is particularly useful for gay men exploring their kink sexuality. “From my observation, experienced kinksters have a substantial head start in the direction of understanding the overlap of sexuality and spirituality,” said Shewey. “A satisfying scene operates at a high level of trust that requires tuning in to the energy between the players – you can call it “head space” or “sub space” - but it means honoring something that goes beyond gear and the material world, something invisible but palpable, which is absolutely one of the key elements of any spiritual or mystical experience. What makes all the difference is having a clear intention. The important lesson I learned from Malidoma Somé, the West African teacher who I heard speak that line ‘Desire is a horse that wants to take you on a journey to spirit,’ is that you can decide where you want that journey to go. If a play session is just about pleasure, that’s fine – as a pleasure activist, obviously I’m all for that. But beyond skin pleasure or genital pleasure, there’s a deeper realm of connection that can happen if you stay on the journey longer, with your eye on the prize. That’s why experienced players are in high demand: they know something about taking their time to build trust

and sensation and erotic trance. If you’re less experienced, it helps to start by letting your partners know you want to go deep.” One technique Shewey advocates for in the book is what he calls P-C-M: “For me, a satisfying sexual encounter involves being mindful of three elements: your own Pleasure (P); your Connection with your partner or partners (C); and the Mechanics (M) – what goes up and down, what goes in and out. When there are difficulties, it’s usually because there’s too much attention on the Mechanics. You get busy fretting about your erection, getting hard, staying hard. It’s easy to get stuck in your head anxiously trying to read the other person’s mind, trying to anticipate what he wants. Or you can find yourself preoccupied with frantically trying to reproduce some porn scenario that was hot when you were jerking off alone but that isn’t so easy to manage in real life.

“Obviously, if you’ve booked dungeon space, you’ll want to have a conversation establishing with your partner what the parameters of the play session are, intentions, limits, safe words, etc. From there, I would encourage you to really pay attention to staying connected to your partner (not getting too caught up with gear or taking pictures/ videos) and also taking charge of your own pleasure, doing what feels good to you or asking for what would feel good. It’s easy to fall into a kind of sexual codependency, where you’re both so busy trying to please the other person that nobody is really taking in what the partner is offering. This is where trust-building pays off. You have to really trust that if you’re having a good time, your partner’s going to have a good time. And you can’t measure a partner’s pleasure only by erections or ejaculations; those may or may not be present or even important.” One of the most commented on sections of the book is Shewey’s exploration of the ‘daddy/ boy’ dynamic, a role-play often undertaken in the fetish scene. Shewey jokes that if Carl Jung were to visit a leather bay, he would call this type of daddy/boy play “archetypal”.

But as with any kind of role-playing scene, it’s good to have agreements about ground rules, clear beginnings, and clear endings, which allows all involved parties to surrender to the play. I’ve seen guys get in trouble by trying to make daddy/boy roles work 24/7, which is very hard to sustain.” Luckily, Shewey says having the kink community and our festivals and events available allows us to discuss and play this out more, in the same way that puppy play has moved from behind closed doors to being an intrinsic part of our fetish events and public gatherings. Giving space for our kinks in public helps us to think through what role they play and allows us to step out of porn fantasies and create those environments for ourselves and share them with others. “The gay male kink scene has traditionally been very smart about the need for community forums, educational opportunities, workshops, and demonstrations as oppor tunities to transmit not just practical skills but also tribal values,” Shewey applauds. “Conversations and workshops about negotiating consent never lose their importance. As with the terms ‘fetish’ and ‘kink,’ ‘daddy/boy’ means something different to everyone who’s drawn to that dynamic, and it’s useful to have dialogue – in public and/or in private – about the range of meanings that we attach to these terms. Is it just about age differential? Is it about a look? Is it about discipline/punishment-aslove? Is it about playing? Is it about devotion? Is it about consciously reprogramming your psyche by doing something intentionally that was formerly done involuntarily?” Shewey’s questioning reflects a key approach of the book. He is not so much trying to “solve” sex and the role of porn in our lives for the rest of us, but much more about leading us to the right questions so that we can create our own answers. And that’s the power and strength of his book, The Paradox of Porn. •

Even though we all love our studios, they’re not entirely necessary anymore if you want to be a successful star. Is that killing the industry? Or just simply taking it into a whole new era? Let’s start with the easiest, how fan video pages can help you get into porn. We all remember when YouTube came out. It revolutionised the way that people shared their creativity, personality, and soul with the world. It’s also a way to show how funny their pets are. Many of us have done studio work, but have always wanted the freedom that studio sets don’t give us. Fan sites give us that freedom.

One of the best-known personalities in the international gay fetish world is also one of the most recognisable Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SOPI), the incredible ‘Sister Roma’. Together with her fellow SOPI, Sister Roma has selflessly raised massive sums for gay charities. The classy first lady of gay sleaze spoke exclusively to Paul Stag for Alphatribe in the second part of our tribute to the SOPI which celebrate their 40th anniversary this year.

How long have you been a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence? 2019 marks 32 years that I’ve been Sister Roma! It’s feels like it’s gone so fast, but at the same time, I’ve dedicated more than half my life to community service, activism, and fundraising. Time flies when you’re having fun. What is the process for someone wishing to become an SOPI? I always say that Sisters are born, not made. If someone feels the calling, the best way to get involved is to find the chapter nearest you and reach out to their Mistress of Novices (MON). They will help you begin the process which can take up to two years to complete. What is the basic purpose of the SOPI? The Sisters started on Easter weekend 1979 in San Francisco when a bunch of guys threw on old nun’s habits and went out to fuck with people. That was it. But the reaction they got was so

incredible they realised they were onto something. A few of their friends joined them and they came up with the name: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence or SOPI. They also defined our vows which are ‘to promulgate universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt’.

Soon after the SOPI were formed, HIV/AIDS hit our community and the Sisters found their purpose. They were the first group to produce a safer sex pamphlet. It was called ‘Play Fair’ and we continue to update and distribute it free of charge to this day. They were also the first group ever to hold a fundraiser for people with HIV/AIDS, and we have remained at the forefront of the war against the disease ever since. Tell us how you have developed your look and style over the years. When I first met the Sisters, I had never done drag in my life. I started to volunteer as a boy and was soon indoctrinated into the group and encouraged to join. My dearest friend and sponsor, Sister Luscious Lashes (RIP), put me in front of a mirror and said, “Just paint whatever comes to mind.” Well I had a background in graphic design, so my first face was very geometric

and looked like war paint (fitting for where our community was in 1987). I thought I was the most amazing and gorgeous thing alive! Looking back on it now, I see how it was rough. But I can also see how it’s progressed over the years. I’ve softened it up a bit and made it more glamorous. And I still think I’m the most gorgeous thing alive! As the ‘Most Photographed Nun in the World’ what have been your high points? People laugh when I say that I am the Most Photographed Nun in the World™ – and they should because it’s funny. Of course, I made it up. But it’s a self-fulling prophecy that came true! (Google it if you don’t believe!)

The whole thing started after one extremely hot and gruelling day at the Folsom Street Fair. I was the emcee on the main stage with Heklina (a San Francisco legend) – a job I did for 15 years. That day, my duties were over and I was trying to leave the Fair, but people kept stopping me and asking for photos. It was about 90 degrees. I was sweaty, my feet hurt, and all I wanted to do was get out of there.

I finally made it to my friend Jay’s place and immediately began complaining: “If one more person asks me for a photo I’m going to scream. Ugh! It’s so annoying.” Jay looked at me and said, “You better enjoy it because one day, no one will.” I was gobsmacked. I was ashamed. I sounded like an ungrateful cunt. And I was. From that day forward I vowed to never refuse a photo – and I never do. So, after 32 years, I may very well be the most photographed nun in the world! What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you whilst in the service of the SOPI? I was honoured to be voted San Francisco Community Grand Marshal in the 2012 Pride Parade. When you are Grand Marshal, they make you feel like a QUEEN for the entire week. It was press conferences, galas, receptions, dinners… and the day of the parade I had about 25 of my hottest male friends (porn stars many of you know, and others) carrying my photos on giant sticks and marching with me. They provide you with a car that has a huge magnetic sign attached which read "SISTER ROMA

COMMUNITY GRAND MARSHAL". The crowd was cheering, and it was all about me. They gave me the magnetic sign, which I dropped off at home after the parade before going back out to party. When I finally got back (much later that night!) I walked into my apartment to find that sign, emblazoned with my name, on the floor of my apartment with a GIANT puddle of cat puke in the middle. I laughed my ass off! Once again it was the universe (and my cat Patrick) reminding me to stay humble. It was purrrfect. You are tremendous friends with some of the world’s most famous drag queens – feel free to name drop! Just so you and your readers know, some of the most successful RuGirls (queens who have appeared on Drag Race) are also some of the humblest. They are authentic, hardworking, and amazing human beings. Bianca Del Rio, Bob the Drag Queen, Trixie Mattel, Shangela, to name just a few. all hateful sows. And I love them so, so much. Honestly, I’ve never met a drag queen I didn’t like. What do you think are your biggest achievement in your time as a Sister? I came to San Francisco straight out of college in 1985. I was living the life of a gay kid in a gay candy store.

I had grown up white, privileged, and was very self-absorbed. Prior to meeting the Sisters, I had never done anything spiritual or civic minded. So, the minute I joined the Order in 1987 it was like my head (and heart) exploded. I realised that I care about other people, my community, human rights, and I was ready to fight for them. One of the first projects I created in the early 90s (which still exists to this day) was ‘Stop the Violence.’ It was a window placard and whistle distribution campaign designed to raise awareness of hate crimes against the queer community. I’ve also remained vigilant in the fight against HIV/AIDS, lending my time and energy to countless fundraiser and ad campaigns for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and other important organisations. In 2014, I gained international attention as the creator of the #MyNameIs which protested against Facebook’s ‘real’ name policy. Over the decades I’ve also been privileged to visit colleges and universities to speak about LGBT rights, HIV/AIDS, and the politics of drag. I’ve supported everything from feeding the homeless to Black Lives Matter, from gun control to LGBT asylum… To be honest, I can’t remember every cause, organisation, or marginalised group that I’ve supported, but it has been my sincere privilege and honour to do so. It has always been my deepest desire to make the Sisters that came before me proud and to set an example for the Sisters to follow. Cheers to 40 more years! •

Sure, you probably know International Mr. Leather takes place in Chicago every May. You might even know that Mr. International Rubber takes place in Chicago in November. But how much do you really know about gay Chicago? Most of the action at IML takes place in central Chicago at the Congress Hotel. But you have to go further north to find Chicago’s gay center of gravity. It’s actually been shifting north over the past several decades.

In the Roaring ‘20s, homos starting congregating in the bohemian spots of Tower Town, now known as the Magnificent Mile. Just a bit further up Lake Michigan, American’s first gay rights organization, the Society for Human Rights, was founded in Old Town in 1925. By the Swinging ‘60s, Old Town was the place to be for gay men. The place was flooded with gay bars where horny guys could meet. All those places are closed now. It’s the same old story. As rents go up, the gays flee for more affordable neighborhoods. In the case of Chicago, it was further up the lake to Lincoln Park area, where you can still find fun at the Manhandler Saloon.

Each participant lives out their favourite practices, performed by experienced Masters. There’s a heavy military feel and an original environment. The main conditions are that the participant must be of legal age and in good health – appropriate for such an adventure event. Training in BDSM lessons and other practices is performed according to participant’s questionnaire which they fill-in ahead of the event. There is also a Slave Tournament to challenge their skills.

In case of serious interest, Master-SM is willing to provide ‘special care’ to one or two of the participants. In these cases, the participant also fills in an exhaustive list indicating what he does not want to experience or attend. However, the questionnaire is only a guideline. Master-SM does not need to follow it or be restricted by the list in any way. The list becomes the only restriction. At his own discretion, Master-SM may also require a face-to-face interview with the participant interested in special care. Where do the events take place? Here Morris talks to Paul Stag about how TIM started, the highs and lows of being in porn, and where the industry is heading. How different was it making and selling gay porn in the late 90s, and how does it compare to today? Porn has always been the most agile industry, negotiating radical changes in technology, medicine, and social turmoil. Fortunately, this means the genre is in no danger of diminishing in impact or expression. Unfortunately, this opens the door to people who are only interested in

money and fiscal growth rather than having a deep, sincere, and vested attachment to the deeper meanings and roles of porn. To many you are an industry pariah, the poster boy for irresponsible sex. How tough has it been? I guess the low point for me was the fifth or sixth year of being in business. I was receiving death threats at the time – you get used to those pretty quickly by the way. At one point I was advised by the cops to move as the threats were coming to my home. The positive aspect was that I spent a few years living in hotels, which I loved. I think when you look back on difficult years, it always turns out that they were also in a strange way the happiest years. How did you discover the biggest bareback star of all time, Dawson? He thought about it for well over a year. To be honest, I’d pretty much forgotten about him. But then one day he wrote and said that he was now absolutely certain. Since he was on the east coast, I had him contact Max, and the rest is history. ‘Dawson’s 20 Load Weekend’ was all Max and Dawson. It’s a beautiful movie. You have always been something of a rebel. How do you feel now that most of the industry has caught up with you and gone bareback? The more people there are who are making porn, the better the chances become that the deep messages and meanings of our incredible sexual nature will be recorded and sustained. Unfortunately, most of the gay porn being made is very poor quality and has a terribly low level of true content. But that’s always been the case. The fact that more producers aren’t using condoms in their shoots doesn’t change that. If I were to give any pornographer advice, it would always be the same: work harder, produce slower, and strive to represent what’s real and true rather than what you can just get away with. This work is crucial. Let me be clear that when I say ‘pornographer’ I’m talking about the people who have made this their profession. I’m not nearly so stern with guys who produce individually or simply to augment their income. What is the future of gay porn? That’s a great question given the state of the world. At this point I don’t believe a thinking pornographer can in good conscience ignore the worldwide trend to the right. In the US it’s particularly vile and extraordinarily dangerous. Even just in terms of mass shootings, right-wing militants are generally terrorising vulnerable sectors of

the population. So how do we – or should we – meaningfully express a sane and inclusive politics in our work? Firstly, it’s important that gay sexpigs come to realise that they are – and they must be – a potentially powerful political force. Of course, this has been the case in the past and it’s gone very badly. Think of the homosexual movement that provided crucial support for Hitler, yet many of those men were slaughtered by him later. As you know, I spend much of my time exploring the general terrain of gay sexuality and desire, the ways in which we use them to define and solidify our individual and group identities. And I’m very sad to say that we are in the middle of an enormous upswing in sympathy for, and even allegiance to, fascism. Bruce La Bruce has been commenting on this for a while now. While I disagree with him on the general nature of fascistic expression in erotica and porn – he errs by defining particularly worshipful camera angles as being inherently fascistic – I think there’s a lot to what he says. There are too many similarities internationally to Weimar Germany – a riotous socio-libidinous groundswell coextant with sustained right-wing pushes and the relative poverty of the masses for instance – for us to ignore. If I were given the task of educating young gay men on the important lessons to be gleaned from their own history, I’d have all of them study the life of Ernst Röhm. He was commander of the Sturmabteilung (SA) which translates to Storm Battalion. The SA were a horde of around three million alienated and impoverished German youththugs. In terms of the erotics of homosexuality, it could be argued that he was the most successful gay male of the 20th century. But his awful life is also a strong lesson about the absolute self-destructive stupidity of a homosexual favouring, or even fetishising, fascism in any form. This repulsive eroto-worship of fascism – which is perhaps most

insidiously represented in Tom of Finland’s work – dovetails with the myth of the ‘alpha male’. Let me just say this outright: there are no alpha males or beta males. As human beings and as gay men, we are infinitely more complex than that. The notion of any male somehow equipped physically or emotionally to be dominant over others is utterly ludicrous. And I mean ludicrous in both senses of the word: it’s folly and it’s an idea useful in sessions of play, a role for a purely situational realization. And yet I find now, more than ever, gay men buying into the fantasy of alphas who are variously defined as such according to the size of their muscles, their cocks, their balls, and so on. None of these absurd distinctions have any actual merit whatsoever in the real world. Not one of the men I’ve known with big muscles, big dicks, big balls, big whatever – not one has stood out as anything other than a complex gay male, neither alpha nor beta nor any other kind of primal social ranking. And I speak from the truly vast experience of a hyper-sexual lifetime. That leads me to think that one aspect of new pornography that needs to be nurtured is the enhancement of general awareness among queer sexpigs of their true nature. Does porn set an example that fans truly copy? Not if it preaches. Then it tends to annoy and repel – witness 99 percent of the anti-bareback porn over the last several decades. Trashy shit. On the other hand, the most porn can aim for is simple and straightforward veracity. What men copy from porn is one thing and one thing only: that which they recognise in themselves. In this sense, good porn can be seen – and used – as a finelytuned social barometer. This was certainly true for the work of great pornographers like Wakefield Poole, Brad Braverman, Peter de Rome, or Steve Scott. I tend to think of gay pornography as akin to cartography. We are involved in the massive project of mapping the vast terrain of male-male desire and sexual practice. If you go back to early maps, they show things like the edge of the world, a continent of demons or monsters, and so on. Most gay pornographers today, unfortunately, produce porn that resembles these ancient maps. They are purely unreal, purely based

on ignorance and a lack of direct experience. Regrettably, I’m talking about many of the well-known people who are currently producing. And while I won’t say that fantasy and silliness can’t occasionally be refreshing and entertaining, we also deserve the more serious work as well, the pornography that maps behaviours and practices accurately and honestly. We deserve this and we need it. Is the HIV crisis over? Absolutely not. So long as gay and queer men rely on big pharma for their health and wellbeing, and so long as big pharma is focussed on obscene profit rather than the wellbeing of the people, the crisis is just eclipsed but not over. Remember that Gilead, the big pharma company that produces PrEP, is owned by truly terrible people. For example, major stockholders of Gilead are George Schultz (Nixon cabinet member and executive at Bechtel) and Donald Rumsfeld (Secretary of Defence under George W. Bush and a proponent of torture and generally evil man). These are the men who own HIV and make obscene profits from PrEP. While ever people like them profit from HIV, the crisis is far from over.

What do you think of the current fansite fad? I love them. I love them for several reasons. Firstly, they empower the sexual individual. For example, if you live in a remote place and can’t make your way to a city where studio production happens, you can build your own functional and financially rewarding empire. Secondly, from what I’ve seen, this direct and individual production enables immediate and honest sexual expression. Thirdly, they seem to engender small yet strong communities of interest. I’ve seen terrible junk result from the sites, but I’ve also seen some great stuff. I’m in favour of them. Who is your biggest battle with now? The gay porn industry, big pharma, the condom nazis, or regulators? Well, actually none of those that you list! To be brutally honest, the biggest battle is against the general ignorance of young gay men concerning their sexual, historical, and cultural heritage. I’m working on a book that includes tiny biographies of around 1,000 men whom I think gay men need to be at least glancingly aware of. The list includes artists, authors, filmmakers, scoundrels, poets, athletes, dancers, philosophers, and political figures. Gay men are essentially different from straight men – really, in every way. It’s not just lamentable, but also dangerous, not to know about where we’ve come from, who we are, and how we function. Definition: Bastinado derives from the word ‘baston’, which in English becomes ‘baton’, a stick for striking the bottom of someone’s feet, originally used as corporal punishment for thousands of years worldwide. And there’s no denying that it’s a particularly cruel form of torture when used with malice.

Modern gay BDSM aficionados became aware of bastinado in 1978 when Alan Parker’s Oscar-winning Midnight Express was released. “[Billy, the American prisoner,] is later rousted out of his cell by the trustee and taken to a large guard named Hamidou (Paul L. Smith), the chief of guards, who takes him to another filthy room, the basement, trusses Billy's ankles in the air and hits the soles of his feet repeatedly with his club for stealing the blanket. Billy's feet swell immensely and he is left in horrific pain.” – IMDB. Bastinado, also known as foot whipping, is a method of corporal punishment which consists of hitting the soles of a person’s bare feet. Unlike most types of flogging, this punishment was meant to cause more pain than actual injury to the victim. It works because there are a high number of nerve endings in the base of your foot... as anyone who has stepped on a Lego block or electric plug will testify. As the skin under the soles of the feet can naturally endure high levels of strain, injuries demanding medical attention (such as lacerations or bruises) are rarely inflicted. Here is the horny ‘science bit’ which explains why bastinado is so fucking hot in gay BDSM play. As the nerve endings on the soles of the feet do not adapt to recurring sensations or impacts, the pain reception does not alleviate through continuous beatings. On the contrary, the perception of pain is further intensified over the course of additional impacts through the activation of nociceptors. Over a sequence of impacts applied with nearly constant force, the perception of pain is progressively intensified until a maximum level of activation is reached. IML 9 (1987) Europe’s first winner, Thomas Karasch from Hamburg (Germany) won the title. He already held the Mr Leather Europe title and beat 31 other contestants. International Ms Leather started – using the tried and tested Chuck Renslow pageant format.

IML 11 (1989) Guy Baldwin, an IML legend and Alphatribe contributor, won the title. Guy recently told us about the experience: “Winning IML in 1989 changed my life in many more ways than I can summarise in one paragraph. Among them, it was a powerful education about celebrity itself, about humility, about responsibility, and about the variation in our leather world(s). Two surprising ‘high points’ since I won have included being chosen to receive the Leather Leadership award from the NGLTF in 2008, and being inducted into the Leather Hall of Fame in 2012.” Tony De Blasé, the designer of the Leather Pride flag, presented it for the first time at IML 11.

IML 13 (1991) The fledgling Leather Archives were launched as a spark of an idea by Chuck Renslow with the able assistance of Tony De Blasé. The Archives had no fixed home as yet.

IML 14 (1992) Won by San Francisco’s favourite cop, after Dirty Harry of course, Lenny Broberg. Lenny upgraded his Mr SF title for the IML sash. He

went on to host the event in the new millennium. Lenny had agreed to write something for this feature but was suddenly taken ill. Everyone at Alphatribe wishes him a rapid recovery.

IML 15 (1993) The contest moved to the Aragon and Congress hotels due to its growing popularity. The winner was the Dutch stud, Henri Ten Have, who took the title back to Amsterdam. T he I n t e r n a t i o n a l B o o t bl a c k Competition was started and was open to both men and women.

IML 16 (1994) Somebody called Jeff Tucker, running as Mr San Jose Leather, won. He later became IML’s most popular Den Daddy. The Daddy is the guy who looks after the contestants backstage, together with the wonderful IML volunteers. They do everything from tying bootlaces to giving blow jobs. (Ever thought of volunteering at this or any other gay fetish event? It is the best way to enjoy them by far and you get free tickets too.) In 2020, Jeff Tucker was nominated as Person of The Year at the X-Awards. He won the public vote, beating many ‘Misters’ that he has looked after.

IML 18 (1996) The Leather Archive and Museum acquired a storefront where they could permanently display their incredible collection of fetish memorabilia including items from The Marquis De Sade and Tom of Finland. New York finally got its first winner with Joe Gallagher. As fetish diversified, a new contest emerged in a little Chicago bar – Mr International Rubber. It honours rubbermen in the same way IML honours leathermen. Thirteen years later it outgrew the bar and moved to the much bigger Center On Halstead. In 2019, the competition attracted 22 international competitors.

IML 19 (1997) Joseph W. Bean began raising funds for a permanent building for the Leather Archive and Museum. The Museum has always been supported by revenue from the contest and donations.

IML 20 (1998) The first contestant from Mr Mid Atlantic Leather, Tony Mills, took the title. There were 62 contestants, then a record. It was announced that International Mister Bootblack Competition would be added as a new title. A separate competition, solely for women, would be held at International Ms Leather. The change was made due to the common belief that women bootblacks had a significant disadvantage. They were competing for votes from the mostly gay male IML attendees, many of whom based their bootblack selection at least partly on sexual attraction. Us gay men are so shallow, but we do like to have a gay leatherman sweating at our feet. Our sisters deserved better, and now they have it.

IML 21 (1999) The Leather Museum and Archives moved into its current home and started life as one of Chicago’s best museum attractions. It’s a Mecca for fetish men worldwide. Every gay man should visit it before he dies... no argument. The venue hosted the IML opening events and toasts for previous titleholders.

IML 23 (2001) A new record is set with 63 cowhideclad hunks. The title headed to Munich (Germany) with Mr Bavarian Leather, Stefan Muller.

IML 24 (2002) More entrants still as IML reaches a new record of 66 contestants. That record stood until the massive influx of competitors in the last three

years. Joseph W. Bean retired from the Museum and his position was taken over by the super organised Rick Storer.

IML 25 (2003) The United Kingdom took its only win to date with John Pendal. He was (and is) a stand-up comedian, resulting in a microphone masterclass at the final. He now performs, often in full leather gear, at gay and straight events worldwide.

IML 28 (2006) After many great Canadian entrants, the land of cops in tight, ass-covering jodhpurs finally won with Bo Ladashevska. The Bootblack title went to Benjamin Palmer of Vancouver (Canada), the first time it had been won by someone from outside the USA.

IML 29 (2007) Mikel Gerle, Mr LA Leather and the first openly HIV positive IML, wins. It was a truly popular and important result. He has continued to support the event since.

IML 30 (2008) Gary Iriza! The book ‘International Mr Leather: 25 Years of Champions’ was published and given to every contestant. The book is still readily available from Amazon and other outlets. As this was the 30th anniversary, the event was filmed both front and backstage. Titled ‘Kink Crusaders’, the resulting film was released in cinemas and on the festival circuit to universal praise. IML 31 (2009) Mr popular himself, Jeffrey Payne, represented the lone star state of Texas. He swept to the top of the podium under a huge wave of Texan flags from the crowd at the Hilton Hotel (the eleventh different venue to host the contest). Jeffrey started the annual toast tradition the following year. And by touring the world extensively, he set the path for future IMLs to follow, taking their titles far and wide and doing

as much good as possible along the way. The Leather Archives and Museum announced that IML would be placed in a trust to benefit the museum. All proceeds from the event would go towards preserving leather history forever.

IML 32 (2010) Controversially, IML announced that it would no longer allow entities which promoted barebacking to participate in the IML Leather Market, effective immediately. Until then, many gay porn studios exhibited at the Market and brought in their hottest stars for the weekend. The Saturday night of IML always coincides with the star-studded GRABBY American Porn Awards at a Boystown theatre. Many studios including TreasureIslandMedia, Dark Alley, DickWadd, and Hot Desert Knights spent most of the IML weekend with the cameras running in endless bedrooms. And without a condom between them! Some title competitors we know of starred in bareback films shot halfway through the three-day contest. It gave the expression ‘bringing the sash into disrepute’ a whole new meaning. With the porn industry moving heavily into bareback, and over 98 percent of studios filming that way, the decree instantly changed the look and feel of the Market. To many it has become poorer for it. The Market is now mainly a clothing retail event. When PrEP became widely available two years later, IML looked very backward. IML was inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame.

IML 33 (2011) Possibly the sexiest IML of all time, Eric Gutierrez, took the sash back to France. He already held the title of Mr Leather Europe, one of the bigger filter contests to IML. Eric is now pursuing a career in politics. Think Trump but with a much fitter and furrier ass that you would want to eat for hours. Puppy calls were heard for the first time at the

The scoring system used is very efficient and fair. The highest and lowest mark for a contestant in each round is ignored to avoid any favouritism or past history. After the initial rounds, the 20 guys with the highest scores are named. Their scores are reset to zero early on the Sunday evening before the final rounds. The Tally Masters have the hardest job of all! They barely have time to squeeze in a circle jerk in the theatre toilets with the sexy deaf translators.

Andy Cross took the title back to San Francisco, the city with the most winners by far with six sashes. LA is on four wins but doing especially well recently. Both cities have major final contests which bring the separate bar titleholders together for a ‘sash off’. It’s obviously a great experience and a hugely successful way of getting a great experienced contestant to represent your city. Over one-third of the IML titles have been won by California which seems to be full of cock-taking bottoms.

IML 39 (2017) The first IML contest in four decades where the founder Chuck Renslow was too ill to attend. He watched the contest by live stream and sent a message of support which was read from the main stage. JACK THOMPSON MR INTERNATIONAL LEATHER 2019

Prior to his election as the 41st International Mr Leather (IML), Jack Thompson earned titles including ONYX Mid-Atlantic and Leatherman of Colour. He was also Mr May in the 2018 Bare Chest Calendar. But as a trans leather man, Jack’s IML election was not without controversy. Paul Stag spoke with Jack to find out about the IML contest and his hopes for his title year.

O Who is Jack Thompson? That’s a hard question. I’m a leather man. I’m a trans man. I’m HIV+. I’m a nerd. I’m a wolf. I’m a husband. I’m a submissive. I’m a son. I’m a drag king. I’m a friend. I’m biracial. I’m a lot of things.

Can you describe your journey to IML 41 in Chicago? I’ve been in the leather community for many years, but I didn’t want to run for a title. Not until I was ready. After we moved to Baltimore, I had a stable living situation and I wasn’t nearly as busy as I was when we lived in the Bay Area. I knew I had the time to run for a

caps and shed a tear for the ultimate fetish visionary and trailblazer. The contest was won by Ralph Bruneau, the leatherman who made nude cool. He’s now an Alphatribe columnist (and our sexiest member of staff). Rick Storer announced his retirement from the Leather Archive and Museum just as its little brother, the European Leather and Fetish Museum, was launched in London. Reflecting the modern times we live in, the London museum encompasses all fetish tribes including leather, skinheads, puppies… The number of contestants jumped to 63 after many years in the 50s. That’s an awful lot of candidates

title. I won Leatherman of Colour in December 2018 alongside the first Leatherwoman of Colour, Velvet Storm. Then my husband Geoff and I prepared for months for IML. Had you been to IML before? Yes, I went in 2017 when my husband ran as Mr San Francisco. He came in first runner-up. How did the act of competing compare to what you thought it would be like? It was exactly what I imagined it would be like. Having gone through it as the husband of a competitor, I had heard all the stories. I’d also known many other men that had run for IML. What was the event like for you? It’s all a blur. I honestly didn’t go into the contest thinking I would win. I hoped I’d be able to give my speech, because I really liked it and hoped others would too, but I had NO IDEA I had a shot at winning. When I was called as one of the top 20 entrants I was ecstatic, but figured that would be it. When Jawn and Fionn were called as the first and second runners-up, I was very curious to see who had won. I felt like fainting when they called my

name. None of it felt real. Not even after my husband ran out on stage and gave me the biggest bear hug. I still thought it was just a dream. The rest of the weekend almost felt like it was happening to someone else. There was a lot of running from place to place and I couldn’t take it all in. I was also waiting for the other shoe to drop – I knew how some people the community would feel about a trans man winning IML. What was the reception like back home after your momentous win? It’s been amazing. My co-workers at the Baltimore Eagle were beyond happy for me and threw me a huge welcome home party. The DC Eagle also threw me one and have been

earlier. As a result, it was also the most emotional IML by far. Commemorative events included the naming of a street, Chuck Renslow Way, after the great man. The number of contestants leapt to 71 from 15 countries, making Renslow’s international dream come true. This was partly due to the ‘Joe King affect’. A former Mr Leather Europe and IML First Runner Up, Joe had started the trend of supporting other national contests. Other titleholders adopted the practice, leading to closer friendships and providing a support network for those who wanted to attend IML. That led to a surge in candidates, particularly from Europe.

Would you like to address the controversy caused by a couple of ‘traditionalists’ after your win? I have to keep taking hits from small-minded, ignorant people in this community. And I want everyone else to publicly say that this bigoted behaviour isn’t OK in our community under any circumstances. I will keep taking those hits. Can you tell our readers about ONYX and what it stands for? ONYX is a leather community organisation run by men of colour. There is also a sibling organisation, the ONYX Pearls. Our mission is to educate, explore, and empower fellow leather people of colour and our allies. We have chapters that span most of the US. Every chapter is a little different and has its own events. Editor’s note: ONYX also hold an incredible party during the IML weekend with the very best DJs!

The increased number of candidates has caused logistical problems for organisers. Particularly affected are the stage managers who need to coordinate the show, and the judges who have to do lengthy interviews with each contestant. The Leather Archive and Museum was inducted into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame. And IML itself was elected into the Cleveland Hall of Fame. James Lee, Mr Kentucky Leather, won the title and we are proud to have him working for Alphatribe. What would you like to achieve with your title year? I want to be as visible as I can be in as many places as possible. I want to show people in the community that have issues with me that I earned my place here. At the same time, I want to show the other people in this community, the ones who don’t know if they belong here, that they do. We are made better by our differences and we should be embracing that in leather. What was the most memorable moment during IML in Chicago? Forty or so of us getting stuck in the elevator. #freefalling What advice would you give to anyone thinking of entering a contest? If it’s not fun, why are you doing it? There will be stressful times and times that you question why you’re there, but having a title is also fun. If you lose that, why do it? Sleazy Madrid has become so successful that there is now a Winter Sleazy Madrid in December. It’s a must for anyone wanting to escape the mid-winter blues. Sleazy Madrid and Spain Fetish Week were established by Manuel Carranco and Toni Blanco in 2000. We spoke to them to find out more about the history of Sleazy Madrid, and the extra special treats they are planning for their birthday weekend extravaganza. Y Viva Espana! Sleazy Madrid 20002020. In 1997 we created ZORTEX, the first fetish party in Spain. It was the perfect combination of fetish rules and electronic music, and it was the greatest underground party ever. The first fetish party was held in Madrid’s old town, in a spot that highlighted the alternative character of the event. Thanks to the unexpected success of Zortex, and with our experience of visiting established fetish circuit events, we decided to hold a fetish meeting in Madrid. We reduced the possible number of attendees and involved Spain’s first fetish bars and shops including Eagle, the Strong Center, and St Leather. The early years were hard, and we faced many difficulties. Most bar and club owners were not willing to rent us their spaces as we were offering something new and unknown, even for the gay community. But thanks to our perseverance and hard work, we successfully overcame these setbacks. In 2000, we held the first Sleazy Madrid during the December long weekend. It was a great success and was attended by many visitors from around Europe. The success of that event meant that many bars and clubs became interested in collaborating and taking part in the following editions. Thanks to the increased number of visitors

and its popularity, Sleazy Madrid has become an integral part of the international fetish circuit. Our aim was to give visibility to the fetish community and establish it as a normal part of the gay community. Thanks to our hard work and years of experience, we can say that we have accomplished our aim. Today Sleazy Madrid is seen as the most important fetish event celebrated in Spain. In 2020 we will proudly celebrate Sleazy Madrid’s 20th anniversary, and that we have achieved our aim of providing the fetish community with visibility and acceptance. Basically a group of gay men in the UK were arrested, tried and imprisoned for their fetish play. This was only the 90's. We hope you enjoy this second part of our focus on one of the greatest travesties and shameful acts of institutional homophobia in our recent fetish history.

After 11 years, and 63 interviews to date, Inside Leather History; A Fireside Chat, I was honored to conduct its definitive interview with Operation Spanner principal litigant Roland Jaggard. After nearly a year of planning, Fireside Chat co-producer, and host, Douglas O’Keeffe traveled to the London suburbs for two days of filming. “Researching, writing, preparing, and planning the interview was one of my greatest challenges,” said Douglas. “This interview had to be absolutely through and handled with the softest of kid gloves.” Karl Hayden from Dublin, and Matt Spike from London, joined Douglas to film the interview. “Understandably, Roland wanted my assurance that anyone coming to his home was vetted. In Karl and Matt I knew I had the best people with me. Roland even specifically instructed all of us not to dress in full Leathers when coming to his home so as not to draw any attention.” So in late July 2019, on the hottest day ever recorded in the U.K., Mr. Roland Jaggard welcomed the Fireside Chats at his door. Though numerous print articles have been written about Operation Spanner and its principals, Roland hadn’t done many interviews about his experience. “Locating Roland, and contacting him, was challenging,” Douglas explained, “I wrote him a very specific and very gentle email with the help of an English teacher friend who reviewed it for grammar and verbiage.” “When I approached him for an interview, Roland first asked to see some of my previous interviews,” Douglas said, “He was impressed by my delicate handling of the subjects so he agreed! I was immensely honored! Feeling comfortable working with me, Roland agreed

to a substantive and thorough interview with the intent of using the interview to tell the tale then put it to bed.” Operation Spanner, a police investigation initiated by the British Obscene Publications Squad, resulted in the British House of Lords (R v Brown) case and subsequent prosecution of 16 defendants for assault occasioning bodily harm and unlawful wounding related to consensual, private, sadomasochistic sex acts. Defendants Laskey, Jaggard, and Brown appealed the judgment to the European Court of Human Rights but lost the appeal in a landmark fifteen to zero decision. “Operation Spanner was devastating for its defendants,” Douglas explains. “Their lives were shattered and many of the defendants lost everything; professional livelyhoods, loved ones, and comfortable homes. The investigation and subsequent legal cases were a terrible witch hunt!” Today Operation Spanner is a watershed teaching tool in annals of British legal education. In his home, Roland shared with Douglas intimate details of his experience. “His home was raided by the police,” Douglas explained. “The police removed video tapes, cameras, photos, and other personal items from his home. Everything was entered into evidence. While searching his home the police even questioned him about a collection of board games discovered in the house. They accused Roland of using them in pornographic acts!” Over time Roland was forced to legally apply for the return of his items, but some things were never returned. Roland was imprisoned for two years. During his imprisonment he kept a log and assisted other inmates with forms and academics. “During the interview Roland shared his prison log with me,” Douglas said. “He also shared Spanner related photos and newspaper articles. I was so privileged to view everything.” “We filmed Roland’s interview for two days and have a total of about three and a half hours worth of video data. That much data will require a lot of time to edit.” Douglas said. “The technology of filming requires frequent breaks for the cameras to cool and for the replacement of data cards. That added a lot of time to the project.” Once editing is complete, and pending Roland’s ultimate approval, Douglas intends to share the full video on the Fireside Chats YouTube channel.

EVERYDAY PREP When PrEP, the medication that protects you from HIV, was introduced, we were told to take a pill a day. Later on ‘intermittent’ PrEP became an option: medication taken before and after unprotected sex. As more and more men use PrEP, we see men implementing PrEP in other ways in their lives.

DAILY OR INTERMITTENT? Most men start out with daily PrEP and take a pill a day. What is easier than taking a pill a day? You can build it into a routine. You can even set up an alarm on your mobile phone to warn you when it’s time for your next pill. A lot of men who started out with daily PrEP have however switched to intermittent PrEP. Rudi: “I started having doubts about daily PrEP when I accompanied my mother on a two week holiday. I knew for sure I was not going have sex with my mum around, so why go on taking PrEP? I realized I often have periods I rather stay in and don’t go to gay venues or date with other guys. Next time I saw my doctor I discussed intermittent PrEP with her. She explained me 2+1+1.”

2+1+1 Starting and stopping PrEP is easy. Start by taking 2 pills at least 2 hours before having unprotected sex. Continue to take one pill a day, until 2 days after your last unprotected sex. 2+1+1 works only for cisgender men, transgender men may need to follow a different PrEP regime. Peter: “Most of my sexual encounters happen when I go to a gay sauna. I take two pills before I go out. If I get lucky and hook-up with a man in the bath house, I continue my PrEP for the next days. If the magic didn’t happen, I stop taking my pills.” Shyam calls his PrEP regime ‘Holiday PrEP’. “My partner and I only have sex together, just the two of us. I don’t mind using a condom if something out of the ordinary

happens. That’s different when I am away from home, on a business trip or a holiday on my own. I start using PrEP before leaving and stop when I return home.”

TTSS In some countries users receive their PrEP for free, in others they have to pay for all or part of it from their own pocket. In order to cut expenses some men take PrEP every other day. Maurice: “I’ve heard this being called ‘TTSS’, because you take your pills on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. It cuts down the medication price to half, almost. I checked with my counselor and he says it is safe as well.” Is it? We checked with Thijs Reyniers, PrEP researcher at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Antwerp). Thijs: “There are a number of reasons why men want to take less pills, be it financial or because they prefer to take less meds. When you take PrEP every other day the protection is almost as complete as with a pill a day. But you must not forget to take your pills regularly, which is a bit more difficult as when you take a daily dose.”

UNOFFICIAL Some men get their PrEP through unofficial channels, they order it online or receive it from friends. Is this safe? Thijs: “It is essential you only use PrEP when you are 100% certain you don’t have HIV already. If you have HIV and use PrEP, you run the risk of creating resistant virus strains. If you wish to use PrEP unofficially, for whatever reason, it is strongly advised to test for HIV before you start, and regularly while you are using PrEP.” •
