Berlin Berlin is the capital of Germany with a population of over 3 million people. The city has become more popular as a place of residence for people from all over the world as it is the most inexpensive capital city in Western Europe. Berlin is well-known for its diverse architecture, festivals, contemporary arts, public transportation networks, nightlife and a high quality of living.
At the Airport Berlin is served by two airports: Tegel (TXL) and Schönefeld (SXF). Both airports are scheduled to be closed when the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport opens, but not before 2018. Most scheduled flights use the Tegel airport, just 8km northwest of the city center. It is one of Europe’s easiest airports. Schönefeld is the former airport of East Berlin, 18km southeast of the city center. It’s small and currently working with only one runway. Much of the traffic is to Eastern Europe and the Middle and Far East. But budget airlines from the UK and Ireland also use it.
Getting around the City The Berlin transport authority, the BVG, operates bus, U-Bahn (underground) and tram networks. The S-Bahn (overground railway) is run by its own authority, but services are integrated within the same three-zone system. U Bahn This service consists of nine lines and covers the major part of the city (over 170 stations). The first trains run shortly after 4am; the last between midnight and 1am, except on Fridays and Saturdays when some lines run all night. The direction of travel is indicated by the name of the last stop on the line. S Bahn It’s the rapid transit system and includes 15 lines that feed into one of three core lines. Especially useful in Eastern Berlin, the S-Bahn covers long distances faster than the U-Bahn and is a more efficient means of getting to outlying areas.
http://www.travelgayeurope.com
Bus Berlin has a dense network of 150 bus routes. The day lines run from 4:30am to about 1am the next morning. Enter at the front of the bus and exit in the middle or at the back. The driver sells only individual tickets, but all tickets from machines on the U- or S-Bahn are valid. Most bus stops have clear timetables and route maps. Tram There are about twenty tram lines, mainly in the East, though some have been extended into the Western half of the city. Tickets are available from machines on the trams, at the terminals and in U-Bahn stations.
3
Regional Trais Berlin is also served by the Regionalbahn (regional railway), which once connected East Berlin with Potsdam. It still runs around the city. Traveling at night Berlin has a comprehensive night-line network that covers all parts of town via buses and trams running every 30 minutes between 12:30am and 4:30am. Before and after these times, the regular timetable for bus and tram routes applies. Taxi Berlin taxis are numerous, safe and efficient. For short journeys, ask for a Kurzstrecke – up to two kilometers for €3.50, but only available when you’ve hailed a cab and not from a taxi stand. The meter starts €3, and €1.50 per kilometer for the first seven kilometers thereafter. The rate remains the same at night. There are plenty of taxi stands, especially in central areas. You can call for a taxi 24 hours daily at 261 026.
Driving Exploring Berlin by car is another easy way to get around. There is a wide range of vehicles for rent. Drivers should bear in mind that, in the absence of signals, they must yield to traffic from the right. Trams always have right of way. Parking is free in Berlin side streets, but spaces are hard to find. On busier streets, you may have to buy a ticket (€1 per hour) from a nearby machine. Cycling Berlin is wonderful for cycling. The west side is flat, with lots of cycle paths, parks and canals to cruise beside, whereas the east has fewer cycle paths and more cobblestones and tram lines. Cycles can be taken on the U-Bahn (except during rush hour).

Two Gay Days in Berlin Berliners first voted for a gay mayor, Klaus Wowereit, in June 2001 and, in 2014 he is still there, having won two more elections. So it’s hardly surprising that Berlin has evolved into one of the most gay-friendly cities in the world. Two gay-packed days in Berlin are never long enough, especially if you want to sleep in between. The city’s gay nightlife is notorious and it starts after midnight.
Shop Berlin is one of the cheapest West European capitals so be sure to go shopping. KaDeWe (Tauentzienstrasse 21-24) is the second largest department store in Europe after Harrods and is always full of bargains. As it is also in the Schöneberg gay area it is probably the first port of call. In Schöneberg, at Motzstrasse 23, you will also find the Prinz Eisenberg gay bookstore. Although most of the books are in German there is a large section of LGBT literature in English. The shopping streets are Kurfürstendamm or (Ku-damm) for luxury brands like Armani, Prada or D&G and Friedrichstrasse for smaller brands like Zara and H&M. For local designer boutiques go to the Kastanienallee in Prenzlauer Berg where the hip Berliners go shopping. Eat You cannot really talk about gay restaurants in a city where it doesn’t matter who your partner is, but the Ganymed Brasserie at Schiffbauerdamm 5 has been welcoming gay people since the Fall of The Wall (daily 12:00-24:00). It is still one of the best place for a candle-lit dinner for two. (tip – book 3 days in advance.)

Explore For gay sightseeing, start with the Schwules Gay Museum in Kreuzberg (Lützowstraße 73; €6; 14:00-18:00; Tue closed). There are special exhibitions, but there is also an impressive permanent exhibition. It contains rare eighteenth-century pamphlets, nineteenth-century pictures of drag artists and portraits of same sex couples from the last 200 years. A very moving exhibit is the Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism. It stands in the Tiergarten opposite the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in the corner of Hannah-Arend Strasse and Ebertstrasse. It consists of a concrete cube with a small window where you peek through to watch a short video of two men or two women kissing. Drink After dark, pop in and out of the gay cafes and bars in Motzstrasse, Fuggerstrasse and around Nollendorfplatz that are literally next to each other.
5
Party After midnight you have many options. In Schöneberg, most end up at Connection at Fuggertsrasse 33. The biggest night is Friday. In Neuköln, Schwuz at Rollbergstrasse 26 has nights with different themes, such as Madonnamania, all offering modern pop. If you like techno, its cathedral is Berghain (Am Wriezener Bahnhof). The entrance stamp allows you to come and go from midnight on Saturday until Monday evening at 18:00 when the club closes. Sunday afternoons are normally reserved for saunas, but beware: in Berlin you have to pay extra for a private cubicle. If you still have stamina, the best night in Berlin is Sunday night: the GMF party at the Weekend Club on Alexanderstraße 7,. Popular, wild and the best way to finish your frenetic 48 hours in Berlin.
Everything Else Schwules Museum Lützowstraße 73 Berlin’s Gay Museum was founded in 1985 and has become Europe’s most important permanent exhibitions of gay culture and history. The archival holdings, numerous contributions to research and more than thirty-five (mostly volunteer) staff makes the Schwules Museum* one of the world’s largest and most significant institutions for archiving, researching and communicating the history and culture of GLBTIQ communities. Changing exhibitions and events take diverse approaches to lesbian, gay, trans*, bisexual and queer biographies, themes and concepts in history, art and culture. Closed Tuesdays.

Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism Tiergarten The Memorial, designed by artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, is a moving tribute to the “forgotten” gay victims of Nazism. The cuboid, that is made of concrete, has a small window, through which visitors can watch a film of two men kissing. Erection of the Memorial was approved by the Bundestag in 2003. Dedication took place on the 27th May 2008 dedication. The event was attended by Berlin’s Mayor Klaus Wowereit, President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Thierse, German Culture Minister Bernd Neumann, Volker Beck and Renate Künast.

Gay Scene Berlin’s gay scene is spread out across two main districts: Schöneberg and Prenzlauer Berg. Most of the gay hotels, bars, cafés and shops are located in the Schöneberg district. There are two smaller gay areas in the less commercial Kreuzberg and the younger Friedrichshain in the east which has developed as another area with gay-friendly venues. Annual gay highlights in Berlin are the Folsom Europe, the Berlinale film festival, Easter meeting for bears and friends, the gay & lesbian street festival in Schöneberg, Gay Pride, the Hustler Ball and the many large sex parties. The scene in Berlin is strong and diverse, and everyone will find something for their taste. Many gay bars and clubs don’t indicate closing hours. In Berlin, if you are up for it, you can party around the clock.
