ON 30TH JULY 2014, EASTBOURNE’S PIER, A GRADE II* LISTED, EUGENIUS BIRCH DESIGNED PIER, AND ONE OF THE TOWN’S MUCH LOVED ICONS, WAS DAMAGED AS FIRE RIPPED THROUGH THE BLUE ROOM AMUSEMENT ARCADE.

R
esidents and visitors watched in horror as East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, the RNLI and Eastbourne Coastguard bravely fought to control the fire.
visiteastbourne.com
Thanks to their heroic efforts the beloved Pier was saved from complete devastation. It was in only two short months that Eastbourne welcomed back the Pier in an emotional reopening event with live bands, magicians and entertainment. The sense of community and goodwill since the fire, from the temporary rehoming of the Pier businesses to finding alternative wedding venues for brides and grooms and hearing your memories of the Pier has been overwhelming. Now visitors can see the burnt out Blue Room, formally a Ballroom, through special viewing panels along the temporary walkway to access the main Pier attractions and shops, including fishing, nightclub, a new cafĂŠ, tea rooms and traditional fish & chips. Over the coming months the Pier will be lovingly restored to its former glory with a time-lapse camera installed to keep a record of its progress. Eastbourne Pier is very much open for business and we look forward to helping you make perfect holiday memories to last a lifetime.

Anniversary
Join a series of special commemorations marking the 800th anniversary since the Magna Carta was agreed between King John and his barons, enshrining the rule of law in English society and limiting authoritarian rule. Towns and villages with direct relevance to the liberties enjoyed today, including nearby Pevensey, will feature in a number of special trails across the UK. Pevensey received a Royal Charter from King John in 1207. Four witnesses to this charter also witnessed the sealing of the Magna Carta eight years later, including Peter des Roches (Bishop of Winchester). The Royal Charter is on view in the Court House Museum in Pevensey and also one the oldest surviving seals of the Cinque Ports (Britain’s original naval force) dating from the early 13th Century. HIGH STANDARDS
Or, on smaller advertisements, these symbols are displayed: These star ratings are awarded by applying the quality standards for each scheme, which are different for each of the hotel and guest accommodation schemes, and are rated from one to five stars, with the more stars indicating the higher the quality. Visit England Gold & Silver Awards Quality in Tourism for Visit England Gold & Silver awards are given in recognition of exceptional quality and the ‘best of the best’ within a star rating regardless of the range of facilities and services they offer. AA Gold Star Award Awarded to the very best of guest accommodation within the 3, 4 and 5 star ratings.
Hotels are larger properties and are managed on a formal and structured basis. They must offer evening meals and be licensed to serve alcohol. As a minimum standard all rooms must be ensuite or have a private bathroom. They will normally have a fully manned reception and offer a fuller range of food, beverage and leisure facilities. Some hotels also offer entertainment.
GUEST ACCOMMODATION Guest accommodation properties are often smaller than hotels with perhaps more of a family home feel and approach with a less structured service. They will often have the owners on site. They range from one or two bedroomed bed and breakfasts or medium sized town houses to larger guest houses, which offer similar services to hotels.
SELF CATERING These establishments have been either quality assessed by Quality in Tourism for Visit England or the AA, or meet the standards set out by the Eastbourne Hospitality Association. All ratings are correct at time of print (Nov 2014) but are subject to change. Please contact assessing body to confirm grading status. For more information on the national accommodation rating scheme for Quality in Tourism and the AA please see visiteastbourne.com/accommodation
