Looking forward to Spring

Last year was a busy one for us. We opened the new Stables Bar, the Plumpy Duck restaurant and AURA Health Spa. This year we’re turning our attention to our function suite. We thank you for your patience and support as we continue to make improvements and upgrades to our venue. January is traditionally a busy time for fitness as people make healthy new year’s resolutions. And we have a new exercise class schedule, and a membership process which includes an improved online class booking system. Don’t forget to bring along your friends and family to try out the classes and facilities. If you can encourage them to join, you receive £50 to spend anywhere in the Club. And remember our members also receive an exclusive 20% discount when dining in the Plumpy Duck or relaxing in our AURA Health Spa. The festive season has passed, but you may be searching for a gift for a special occasion or for a birthday. We have launched an elegant-looking Gift Card, which is easy to use, and makes a perfect present.

Welcome to our first newsletter, we hope you enjoy it bowfieldhotel.co.uk

Focus on food Meet our new Hotel Director

Fraser Makeham Fraser returned to the Bowfield last December, having previously worked for us during 2001 to 2006. He’s impressed by our transformation and the huge potential of our venue. His goal is to make connections with all our members and visitors and to create a feeling of community within our Club. Here’s a word from Fraser …

I am delighted to return having been previously employed at Bowfield for five years. During that period, we added the £1million extension which included the soft play area, studio, gym, changing accommodation and the spa. This resulted in a huge growth in leisure memberships with us reaching nearly 2300 members in early 2006. Clearly much has changed since 2006 with Manorview Hotels and Leisure Group acquiring Bowfield in 2012. Their substantial investments mean we have a Club to be proud of. One of the many aspects that attracted me back to Bowfield was the ‘community’ within the membership that sets us apart from other leisure providers. It is our intention to grow the Bowfield community and to ensure we maximise the opportunity to engage with our members, and to let you be part of our decision-making process for future developments.

The Plumpy Duck

In order for us to do this, we have set up a Bowfield members Facebook page which will only be open to current members. This will provide a platform where we can keep you updated on any developments. There will also be a members’ forum within this where you can contribute your feedback. To join us please speak to Fraser or enquire at reception. In addition to this, some of you may already receive email communication from us, and we will continue to do this. Please make sure we have your correct details by speaking to our reception desk. If you feel we haven’t matched your expectations, I need to find out why? Please contact me through e-mail Fraser.Makeham@bowfieldhotel.co.uk or arrange to meet with me through reception. I would expect to address any concerns you may have and find resolutions which make you proud to be part of the Bowfield community. In 2018 we will carry out a comprehensive membership survey to capture meaningful data on usage levels, user experience and thoughts on future developments. This will be available to members in Spring 2018. Bowfield Hotel & Country Club will continue to grow from strength to strength under the guidance of Manorview Hotels and Leisure Group, and I hope you will continue to support us in our quest to deliver a quality experience to you all. I look forward to meeting you.

Last year we were delighted to open our new Plumpy Duck Restaurant and Stables Bar, and both have been very well received by all our visitors. There’s something for everyone at the Stables Bar, and it’s the place for all the family and friends to visit for a lazy weekend escape. If you’re feeling peckish, the Plumpy Duck is next door. The restaurant boosts comfy sofas, intimate booths and an ambience where you’ll want to sit a while.

There’s an excellent menu of freshly prepared dishes all carefully crafted by our passionate chefs. We have a daily duck special, and you’ll also find quality products, such as Loch Fyne scallops and succulent Robert Howie steaks. You can also enjoy a special ‘Plumpy Duck Platter’.

Spotlight on Laura Dorran AURA Health Spa Manager Laura has been our AURA Health Spa Manager since June 2017. She joined us from the Auchrannie Resort on Arran, where she was Spa Manager for over three years, and she has also previously worked at the Blythswood Spa in Glasgow. The Spa Manager role is varied. It includes looking after revenue, people management, team development, and ensuring high levels of customer service. Laura loves the ambience at AURA and the huge Lemi beds, which came from Italy. No matter what height you are, you will not be dangling off the sides or the ends.

And Laura is adamant that a spa is not just for females. Laura said, “I was really passionate about having a gents’ section. Guys are looking after themselves, and I wanted to create a space for them. They can come and have spa day, visit with their mates or on their own, we offer sports massages, and they can get a massage after football or a work out. Spas are more popular for gents these days than they have ever been.” On her days off, there’s nothing Laura likes better … than going to a spa! And while most people visit a spa to switch off, Laura is always researching.

There’s a wide range of treatments on offer including massages, facials, scrubs, body wraps, make-up, nails, and holistic treatments such as reflexology. But Laura’s favourite is the holistic back, face, and scalp. This gorgeous treatment includes a full body brush, back exfoliation, a back, neck and shoulders massage with hot stones, a 50 min facial, and a head and scalp massage.

She said, “I try to switch off but it’s good to see what I can pick up. It’s because I’m so passionate about the spa industry. I bounce into work because I absolutely love what I do”

Charity News At Bowfield we give back to our community, and we are supporters of St Vincent’s Hospice, which is only five minutes from us. Members of our team take part in charitable events and donate their time to this great organization. Last year we raised £2,024 for St Vincent’s Hospice. The amount came through an amalgamation of events. Our annual 10k road race, gathered £1,150, a zip slide across the River Clyde raised £500, and £374 came from our Christmas Family Day. Last month we supported local ‘Pool King’ Phil Steven. Phil potted 6,000 pool balls in less than 24 hours at Midton Bowling Club. Bending over the pool table left Phil with a sore back and our AURA Spa Manager Laura, was right on cue to offer Phil a complimentary massage. Phil’s efforts raised nearly £5,000 for St Vincent’s Hospice.

St Vincent’s Hospice is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. We’re planning a set of challenges in our gym to raise money for the Hospice, and you can join us. You could be running/rowing/stepping for 30 minutes, or clocking up 30 hours of exercise over the course of a month. You can set yourself a challenge, raise money, and show your support for a great cause. And it might even encourage you to keep your exercise goals on track. This year the Manorview Group are also supporting some other amazing organisations, and we are running the London Marathon for two great children’s charities. Our Manorview MD, Steve Graham, and our Head of Procurement Steve Buckley, are running for CHAS (Children’s Hospices Across Scotland) and When You Wish Upon a Star (Scotland). We have £5,000 to raise, which will be split between the two charities. We have some fundraising events planned, one of these is at Bowfield. We’re holding a Race Night for CHAS on Friday 2nd March. Tickets are £10 each, and all proceeds will go towards the charity. There’s more information about this challenge on our Virgin Money page. The London Marathon takes place on Sunday 22nd April 2018.
