Paul C layton When I began my yoga practice almost 20 years ago, I believed it would give me the strength, flexibility and balance to enjoy my grandchildren. It worked! I can keep up with a 9 year old!!! While on vacation with my grandson, we went down the pool slide almost 100 times, in ONE day. It felt great to be able to get up the next morning and put in another full day. Mansfield is truly one of my favorite places, with lots of great people (Jen, Staci, Jerry, Paul... hi guys!) This year about a dozen of us did the Original Mud Run, 6 miles through the mud with military type obstacles. It was especially gratifying to keep up with that group (they are all more than 20 years younger). I give all the credit to yoga; it’s an amazingly gentle and effective way to health and well-being and it is never too late to start! And you can start TODAY at the MAC!

Angie Henley Angie Henley is the newest addition to the City of Mansfield’s Parks and Recreation staff. Angie was hired as the Cultural Arts/Special Events Supervisor in October. She will be in charge of sponsorships and community-wide City special events such as Hometown Holidays, Winter Walk, and Rockin’ 4th of July. Angie was born and raised in DeSoto, Texas and worked her way through college in the hotel/catering industry. After graduating from Dallas Baptist University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business she relocated to Dearborn, Michigan. While planning events for the City of Dearborn, Michigan, she realized she could work in special events on a much bigger scale. After several years in Michigan she decided that it was time to move back home to Texas, to a warmer climate. She has been working in special events for the past 12 years and really thinks that she has the “best job in the city!” She loves that her job is constantly changing and she is allowed to be creative every day. Angie and her husband Owen stay busy keeping up with their kids Ally (8) and Will (5). When not working, she can be found either on the soccer fields with Ally or the baseball fields with Will.

trips & tours trips & tours Bethlehem Revisited - Waxahachie This Christmas season will be like no other you have ever experienced! Imagine being able to step back in time, 2000 years ago, and walk the streets of ancient Bethlehem as Mary and Joseph did on the night of Christ’s birth. Looking for a room, they not only encountered innkeepers on their journey, but also merchants, food vendors, craftsmen, tradesmen, clergy, and many other citizens as well as live sheep, camels, and donkeys. The streets were bustling and will be for you too, at Waxahachie’s newest city within a city, “Bethlehem Revisited.” Stroll around the walled city and see demonstrations of historic crafts as you journey to the site of the nativity. You can also visit Herod’s Court and await the nightly parade of the three kings bringing their treasures to Bethlehem’s newest citizen. Price includes transportation only. 13441 12/08

Work set to begin on new community park Construction is expected to begin in early 2013 on the first phase of a three-phase project that will transform more than 80 acres along Walnut Creek near Matlock Road into an interactive nature park complete with an education center and connections to the Walnut Creek Linear trail system. The property, purchased by the Mansfield Park Facilities Development Corporation in 2004, is often referred to as the “Williams Property” for the longtime Mansfield family that lived on the land for many years. The family’s wish was that the natural elements on the land be preserved for a public park. “It’s very rare that a city has an opportunity like this,” said Shelly Lanners, director of community services. “We have more than 80 acres of beautiful, untouched land in the middle of our city. Walnut Creek runs through the property. There are large trees that are a hundred years old. This will be a special place for our residents to not only enjoy nature but for our children to have a great educational experience.”

The first phase of the project includes $3.5 million of outdoor elements including trails, picnic areas, outdoor class rooms, an entry plaza, and parking. Construction on the first phase is expected to take one year. Phase II of the project is expected to include 2.7 miles of trails connecting the new park to the Walnut Creek Linear Park trail system and extending the trails to Joe Pool Lake. Phase III is slated to include the park’s indoor elements such as the nature center and tree house learning lab. The timeline has Phase II completion in 2014/2015. Phase III is scheduled for completion in 2016/2017 unless funding becomes available sooner. The total cost of all phases of the project is expected to be $12.6 million. Plans for the Williams property were part of the MPFDC’s 10-year master plan adopted in 2010.
