Downtown Construction The next phase of the Walnut Creek Linear Trail system is on its way to completion, as crews are hard at work extending the trail from Town Park to Historic Downtown Mansfield. The north section, from Pleasant Ridge Drive to Oak Street, is creating a walkable, ridable lighted trail connection along Main Street/ FM 157. Additional construction will begin in the coming weeks on the south end of Main Street, from Broad Street to Hunt Street. That project will add pedestrian and bicycle space, as well as improved on-street parking. Please use caution around the area, as speed limits have changed and some lanes may be closed and/or narrowed during construction. The North Main project is on track to be completed in early 2019.

Administration Building The Mansfield Parks & Recreation Department and Mansfield Convention & Visitors Bureau will soon have a new home. Construction is underway on a new administration building off Matlock Road, adjacent to Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park. The facility will include space for 19 staff members as well as conference rooms and space for public meetings. It replaces the current administration offices off Smith Street in Historic Downtown Mansfield and is expected to open this winter.

A freak wind storm blew in around 9:15 p.m. delaying the fireworks show for almost an hour but it passed just as quickly as it came in and the show was able to proceed. National Parks & Rec Month

2018 marks the second year for Music Alley, a music & arts festival in Historic Downtown Mansfield. The unique event includes four concurrent stages of live music, with genres from singer-songwriter to reggae to country and more. You can even hit the dance floor, set up right in the middle of Main Street, and salsa, line dance or swing the night away. Another fun feature is the assortment of interactive art booths, where guests can create mini masterpieces to take home. This year’s headlining band, The LandSharks, is bringing Jimmy Buffet covers and a beachy tropical vibe to Mansfield, making Music Alley 2018 THE place to be this September.

July is National Parks & Recreation Month, a nationwide effort by the National Parks and Recreation Association to remind citizens about the important role parks play in their communities. Mayor David Cook and the City Council recognized Mansfield’s Parks & Rec staff with a proclamation at the June 25 council meeting.

StarCenter Mansfield City leaders will gather this fall to celebrate the grand opening of StarCenter Mansfield, the latest public-private partnership for Mansfield Parks & Recreation. The 80,000 square foot facility has two rinks and a large community meeting/event space. It will be open for leagues, lessons and public skate time starting in September.

Online Reservations Rockin 4th of July Mansfield’s biggest event of the year was another huge success! Nearly 12-thousand people came to the 11th annual Rockin 4th of July at Big League Dreams Mansfield for a night of fun & games and live www.mansfieldparks.com

Ah summer, the season of water sports, watermelon and…WiFi? Phones, tablets, televisions and consoles have replaced floats and kick balls on many kids’ summer essential list, much to the chagrin of parents everywhere. But going tech-free is a daunting and often unrealistic task for everyone, and it’s hard to find a happy medium of moderation.

grid completely. We’re just trying to help busy families find a balance, and we think our parks are the perfect way to accomplish that.” With recent expansions to the department’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, all of the 16 individual Mansfield parks now have a location established for visitors to “check in” on social networks. Through videos, photos and articles, the parks and recreation department is encouraging visitors to “Check in” at the park then “Unplug” and enjoy the visit with their friends and family. “We love to see everyone out in the parks and sharing the fun they’re having with their online followers, so we’ve made it easier and more fun to do so with the new location pages,” said Matt Young, director of parks and recreation. “It’s a great way to spread the word about our awardwinning parks system and maybe introduce a new park to someone who hasn’t been there before.”

Turns out, that discovery might be right around the corner in the form of a swing or trail. Starting this summer, Mansfield Parks & Recreation began encouraging families to check in to one of their award-winning parks for some simple, free and easy screen-free time together. “It’s a digital world, and we’re all plugged in and connected 24/7,” said Ann Beck, marketing & communications manager for Mansfield Parks & Recreation. “But sometimes those connections to the outside world are keeping us from making a more meaningful connection with the most important people in our lives. We certainly don’t expect anyone to go off the

www.mansfieldparks.com

The new campaign isn’t antitechnology, Beck said, but rather takes advantage of something people are already doing in their daily lives. “It’s an amazing tool to keep people connected,” she said. “We’re just suggesting you check in, share a selfie, invite your friends and then put the phone away to put in some real “Face Time” with the people you truly care about.”

at rotating parks with music, games and other screen-free entertainment to encourage people to visit a park and play. In the fall, Pop Up Playdates will offer similar activities, aimed at the toddler and pre-k kids and their parents. Overall, the goal is to bring people together and encourage active, engaging play. “The parks have an amazing ability to connect,” Beck said. “Not only literally connecting our city, as the Walnut Creek Linear Trail does as it moves from east to west across Mansfield, but connecting our residents. Parks offer a common ground for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, whether it’s over a nature hike, while pushing kids on swings, during a fitness class at the activities center or just walking the family dog. “With parks, we can bring people closer to each other and the world around them,” she said. “It’s a wireless connection you just can’t find anywhere else.” For more updates or to see a map of nearby parks and find a location you can check in to, check out Mansfield Parks & Recreation Department on Facebook.

The campaign began this summer and will continue for the next year. In addition to photos and videos reminding people to get outside and play, the department is sharing tips, articles and more information to help families limit screen time and incorporate more outside time into their day. In person efforts include Pop Up Play Stations, mini events FALL 2018 6

Mansfield families have a new opportunity for outdoor fun this fall with another Family Camping Workshop, hosted by Mansfield Parks & Rec in conjunction with Texas Parks & Wildlife. The program is designed to help first-time campers experience the fun of sleeping under the stars without the stress of planning and expensive preparations. “Camping is a wonderful experience, and something we hope every child gets to try at least once,” said Tiffany

Nature Education

Pitch a Tent Together Chrzanowski, Mansfield Parks & Recreation’s Nature Education Supervisor. “But it can be overwhelming to get all the equipment and supplies, not to mention expensive, and it’s hard to justify that investment if you don’t know how often you’ll be able to use it. We are thrilled to partner with Texas Parks & Wildlife on this unique

program and bring an easier, more affordable option to Mansfield residents.” Participants pay one flat rate per family (defined as two adults and up to four children), which covers use of all of the necessary equipment. Tents, cots and cooking supplies are all included. Guests bring sleeping bags or blankets, food and any personal items (toiletries, etc) they might want. Food is not provided, but staff does send a packet of campfirefriendly recipes that can be easily made with the provided equipment and very little prior skill. “The training is an incredibly valuable bonus to this program,” said Chrzanowski. “We aren’t dropping people in the middle of the woods. Our staff is on site through the entire trip to help with everything from setting up a tent to starting a fire. You don’t need to have been a boy scout to feel totally safe and prepared to spend the night under the stars.” The workshop runs from Saturday morning until Sunday morning and also includes activities during the

day such as kayaking, hiking, fishing and crafts. The excursions are all included in the workshop fees and are led by trained staff. The evening ends with s’mores and songs by the campfire before everyone retires to their tents for the night. The activities and exact timeline depend on the time of year and campsite location, which varies by season and

availability. Spaces to participate in the workshop are limited; see the program listing on page 18 for registration information. “Our goal with this workshop is for people to realize you can still have these amazing outdoor experiences even when you aren’t living out in the country or a trained forest ranger yourself,” said Chrzanowski. “It doesn’t take much to have an amazing weekend in the great outdoors with your family, and we’re so happy to help make that happen.” FALL 2018 16

2018 will mark the 100th observance of Veterans Day in the United States, and the second year of a new tradition in Mansfield. After years of planning, last year’s first-ever Veterans Day Parade was met with large crowds, high praise and very appreciative military families. This year, the event is not only coming back, but will return even bigger and better than the inaugural year. While various organizations had tried to organize a parade over the years, it finally came together in the last few years thanks to efforts from Sergeant First Class Daniel Kinnel, a 20- year veteran now working as the Mansfield High School Junior ROTC Army instructor. Kinnel has lived in Mansfield for more than a decade, and said he wanted to see an official ceremony honoring the National holiday in his hometown. He joined forces with the Mansfield American Legion Post, who had long advocated for an event but didn’t have the manpower to get it done. It wasn’t easy, but they say it was a cause they couldn’t let go. “Mansfield has a lot of residents who have served our country,” Kinnel said. “I really think the parade is important to help bring the city closer together. There are veterans www.mansfieldparks.com

working for the schools, the city, as first responders, for private companies and of course retired. This event is a way for them to all come together, share that common bond and see how much the city appreciates their service.”

Legion, all military branch local recruitment offices, veterans organizations, Mansfield ISD and the City of Mansfield, with Mayor David Cook, one of the project’s first big supporters, serving as the Grand Marshall.

Texas has the second highest population of military veterans in the US with 1.6 million, and the Census estimates more than 4,000 of those are from Mansfield. Those tallies don’t, however, count the number of people connected to the service branches in another way; marriage, family, friend or patriot. In fact, it’s hard to find anyone, in Mansfield or beyond, who doesn’t have a very special devotion to the

“I was thrilled to be part of the inaugural Veterans Day Parade in Mansfield,” said Mayor David Cook. “I am committed to ensuring this parade to celebrate our veterans becomes a tradition in Mansfield. Events like this make Mansfield so special; a group of dedicated citizens coming together with Mansfield Churches FOR THE CITY to honor our veterans and our country. I’m proud to see this level of community

Veterans Honored with New City Event military and the sacrifice Veterans make on behalf of the country. Mayor David Cook and Mansfield High School principal Jennifer Young were both early supporters of the project and helped get the ball rolling to involve other groups and city and school employees. Organizers say the strong community support and dedicated volunteers helped to turn their dream into reality. “We’re all very excited to see it all come together,”Kinnel said. “The kids especially. They’ve worked really hard on this project but in turn, they’ve learned a lot about sacrifice and are finally getting a chance to give back.” 2017 participants for the parade included marching bands from Mansfield and Legacy high schools, as well as JROTC groups from all five MISD high schools. Other groups represented include the American

involvement, and so happy the City of Mansfield and the Mansfield Independent School District are working together to make this parade a reality.” The 2018 Mansfield Veterans Day Parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10. The route takes a loop around Broad Street, with the announcing stage in front of the Public Safety Building. Like last year, immediately following the parade guests are invited to R. L. Anderson Stadium for an Honorary Salute, a concert of patriotic songs performed by school bands and choirs. Also new this year, the Mansfield Activities Center’s Senior Lifestyles program is hosting a Veterans Day breakfast at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 9 for all area veterans and their families. For more information about either event, visit the calendar online at mansfieldtexas.gov or follow the city on Facebook for updates. FALL 2018 20
