Construction crews, gold shovels and trophy presentations, oh my! It’s been a busy spring at the Mansfield Parks and Recreation Department, marked by incredible progress and honor…and they’re just getting started! In January, city and community leaders gathered for the official ribbon cutting of FieldhouseUSA Mansfield, the fourth publicprivate partnership for the parks department. The $12.9 million, 100,000 square-foot basketball and volleyball complex is expected to bring more than one million visits annually to the city through its tournaments, league play and special events. In March, officials gathered again for a groundbreaking celebrating the new StarCenter Mansfield Ice Rink. Dallas Stars Alumni players Marty Turco, Andy Moog and Bob Bassen were on hand to mark the arrival of Mansfield’s newest sports destination. Located next to FieldhouseUSA and part of the upcoming Shops at Broad street development, the 80,000 squarefoot dual-ice rink facility is expected to open in September 2017. April brought another groundbreaking to mark the start of construction on the Pond Branch linear trail, which stretches from Kimball Street to Sycamore Street and serves as a walkable, ridable trail for the historic downtown business district and restaurants. Work on the expansion should be completed in the fall of 2017.

www.mansfieldparks.com

At the same time, construction continues at Clayton W. Chandler Park, a 13-acre park located off Walnut Creek Drive near Debbie Lane. The $3.5 million plan will bring several new amenities. The football fields will remain, and will be joined by 2.5 lighted basketball courts and a sand volleyball court. The existing tennis courts are being renovated to meet USTA guidelines. Chandler Park will also be home to Mansfield’s first splash pad, to be open seasonally during

regular park hours for visitors to cool off and have fun. Chandler Park will also feature another huge first for Mansfield: a dedicated skateboarding space called a skate spot. The park is topped off with a quarter mile looped walking trail, open play spaces, two new playgrounds and a gorgeous halfacre pond. Construction on

Chandler Park began in fall 2016 and is expected to be completed the summer of 2017. “This will be one of the most diversely, actively programmed parks in the city,” Park Planner Chris Ray said. “This park truly has something for everyone.” Perhaps the biggest icing on this spring’s cake of great progress came in March, when the Mansfield Parks & Recreation Department was honored by the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) with the Gold Medal Award, the highest designation possible. Mansfield was recognized as the winner among cities with populations between 50,000 and 100,000, with awards officials citing the city’s collaborative efforts and remarking that Mansfield demonstrated an outstanding focus on public service, preservation and improvement of the city’s parks and recreation system. “Once again Mansfield’s parks and recreation system is being lauded as the best in the state,” said Mayor David L. Cook. “The city’s commitment to this important amenity for our residents is long and unwavering. Our city’s parks are beautiful. Our recreation programs and special events draw our community together in fun and exciting ways. These are the hallmarks of an award-winning parks system and why Mansfield continues to be recognized as the best.”

Summer

camps

Lazy days of summer? Not anymore! Mansfield area kids are enjoying school vacations full of activities and adventure thanks to the MAC’s extensive summer camp selection. Kids Zone, a supervised full-day camp for girls and boys between the ages of 6 and 11, runs the entire summer and can be booked for the whole season or by the week. Daily activities include sports and gym play, library time, crafts and art classes, park excursions, water days, special guests, ice skating, bowling and more, as well as a unique destination field trip each week. The trained Kids Zone counselors work to ensure that each child has a fun and rewarding camp experience. “My favorite thing about Kids Zone is the teachers and activities and the MAC,” said Emma Alt, a frequent camper. “I love it all!” “Kids Zone is great because we are constantly moving -- kids aren’t just sitting all day,” said Mary Jones, Program Coordinator. “We go on multiple field trips each week, with one large, all-day field 7 summer 2017

trip each week, all the fees for which are included in your weekly rate. Parents love it because we’re able to cram so much fun and value into one session. I want them to love coming and pass out when they hit the car because they’re so exhausted!” For the athletes in the house, the MAC offers highly specialized sports camps for every skill level. Trained instructors lead basketball, golf, soccer and tennis for ages 4-16Y depending on the camp. “All of our instructors are experienced in teaching sport specific skills that are age appropriate and love to share their knowledge.” said Greg Guse, Recreation Services Supervisor. “Our goal is for each

Younger nature enthusiasts can try out Forest Camp (ages 5+) that goes into more detail on the science of the wilderness, including crafts, experiments and hands-on exploration. Nature Education

15 summer 2017

Set sail on the open sea! Maybe not, but a new program from the Nature Education department invites Mansfield area residents to take that first step towards sea legs with kayaking trips in the creeks running in and along Joe Pool Lake. The first tours actually began late last summer with a smaller program, but after incredible response and support, the 2017 tour schedule was expanded to allow more guests the opportunity for adventure. All equipment is provided, as well as a brief training before heading out on the guided tours. “This program is for anyone who is interested in kayaking! We have guests that have never been out on a boat before and guests that enjoy weekly kayaking tours around the Metroplex,” said Nature Education Supervisor Tiffany Gorrell, who runs the program. The dual-seated kayaks are led by trained naturalists through the lake and creek offshoots to explore both the water and wildlife surrounding the shores. “Our kayaking tours give guests a unique view of wildlife,” said Tiffany. “We see many birds such as the kingfisher, great blue heron,

Wildlife Appreciation great egret, vultures, ducks, and many more. In the spring time we see the great blue herons nesting along our tour route.” It was that nature exposure that brought out Mansfield mom Christa Soileau and her son Jon-Pierre over spring break. “My son is really into animals and wildlife, so we’ve been trying out more and more of the Mansfield park programs lately. I saw this in the spring Recreation

“Our kayaking tours give guests a unique view of wildlife.” -Tiffany Gorrell Nature Education Supervisor Guide and knew it would be perfect for him,” said Christa. “I hope we see alligators!” chimed Jon-Pierre.

Sadly for him, no alligators are likely to be found in these parts, but rather a fun adventure that’s inexpensive and close to home, perfect for busy families. Children ages 7 and older are welcome, but must ride with an adult until age 17. Registration is as low as $22 with early bird discounts, and can be done online or at the Mansfield Activities Center. Spaces are limited and will fill quickly, so anyone looking to set sail this summer should sign up quickly! For more information, contact the MAC at (817) 728-3680.

“Thank you to the Nature Education department for accommodating our class at the Oliver Nature Park, we learned a lot from our guided tour and the scavenger hunt was awesome. The highlight of our trip was learning about and touching the live animals and watching the birds and butterflies from the treehouse.”
