PARKS & rec news

3 summer 2018

817.728.3680

Barks & Rec The fur was flying at Katherine Rose Memorial Park this March for the first Barks & Rec 5k and Festival. The unique event paired runners in the fun run with dogs from area animal shelters—more than 100 pups to be exact—to give both the people and the pups a fun morning in the park. Best of all, nearly half the dogs, which were brought from not only Mansfield but three other area shelters, found new homes that day. The festivities included shopping, food, dog agility demonstrations and fun for all ages. Barks & Rec will return next spring, with another couch-to-5k training class and 5k event, so keep an eye out to participate!

Pond Branch Grand Opening Community leaders gathered in Historic Downtown Mansfield on Feb. 12 for the grand opening of Pond Branch Linear Park. The nearly half-mile trail runs along Pond Branch creek and offers a walking and biking option for visitors to the vibrant downtown business district. Future extensions of the trail are planned to connect to Katherine Rose Memorial Park and the Walnut Creek Linear Trail.

Dog Park Mansfield mutts rejoice! The Parks & Recreation Department is actively working on proposals for the first dog park. After gathering feedback in an online survey and public meeting, Park Planning is now working with designers to create a concept on the proposed site, the former homestead of Mansfield founder Ralph Man.

www.mansfieldparks.com

The home would be fenced separately for historical preservation, but the tract still includes seven plus acres of wooded land that could someday become the playground of doggy dreams! Concepts will be finalized and presented to MPFDC and City Council later this summer, with hopes of completion in mid-2019.

Chandler Splash Pad Are you ready for summer fun? The splash pad at Clayton W. Chandler Park will open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. starting May 26 and remain open daily until Sept. 3.

Athletic Field Master Plan Park Planning is now at work on an Athletic Field Master Plan, which encompasses all Mansfield sports complexes, parks and fields. Staff gathered public input at a series of open meetings in Fall 2017, and is using that feedback plus data on current usage and trends to develop a plan that will address the city’s youth sports needs for the next 20 years. Options include redevelopment of current properties and/or construction of new fields, depending on what works best for time, budget and demand. Consultants working with the city hope to have preliminary master plan concepts to evaluate by Fall 2018.

New Fitness Equipment Take your workout to the next level with new fitness equipment along the trails at Katherine Rose Memorial Park. The four stations use built-in adjustable resistance dials to offer flexible workouts for all ages and

abilities, and are a great way to add strength training to your daily routine! Similar fitness equipment was installed at Clayton W. Chandler Park with the Phase II construction updates.

Downtown Construction Historic Downtown Mansfield is getting a bit of a face lift starting this summer, as Main Street undergoes significant construction. The plan for the north section, from Pleasant Ridge Drive to Oak Street, will create a walkable, ridable trail connection from Town Park as an extension of the Walnut Creek Linear Trail system. Construction of south Main Street, from Broad Street to Hunt Street, will be a complete street section with sidewalks, on-street parking and enhanced landscaping to make the entire downtown more pedestrian-friendly and easily accessible. Both projects are expected to start late spring/summer 2018 and be finished by mid-2019.

Administration Building Construction began this spring on a new building for the Parks & Recreation and Convention and Visitors Bureau administration staff. The facility, located off Matlock Road near Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park, will house nearly 20 staff members as well as a community meeting space for public forums, board meetings and educational programs during inclement weather. The new building will allow for future growth of the department as well as muchneeded space for current staff to continue providing award-winning facilities and services for Mansfield residents. Construction is expected to be complete in Winter 2018-2019. summer 2018 4

It’s a little bit tennis, a little bit ping pong and a whole lot of fun! Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, especially among active adults, and it’s found a huge following right here in Mansfield thanks to programs at the Mansfield Activities Center. So huge, in fact, that Mansfield Parks & Recreation is hosting a tournament this September at FieldhouseUSA, where hundreds of players are expected to gather for competitive play.

Make a Racket with Pickleball Currently, the MAC hosts open court for pickleball three times each week, Mondays 2-5 p.m., Wednesdays 5-8 p.m., and Fridays 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Anywhere from 10-30 players gather each day for camaraderie and competition, and welcome players of all skill level. “As much as our regulars take their matches seriously,” said Greg Guse, MAC recreation services supervisor, “they also really love introducing new players to the game. They’re quick to welcome newcomers and

show them the basics, because it really is pretty easy to pick up and the more players we keep coming, the more competition there is.” Competition at the upcoming tournament is expected to be more serious, with players coming from around the state. The Summer Slam Pickleball Tournament Sept. 8-9 will be held at FieldhouseUSA Mansfield to accommodate the larger crowds. It will feature men’s and women’s doubles in a double-elimination competition. Cost is $35 per player, with lunch and snacks provided. Registration before June 1 qualifies for an early-bird $10 discount. “We’ve seen how fast Pickleball has grown in popularity here in Mansfield,” Guse said. “We’re excited to be able to offer a larger competition in a new, state-of-theart facility to give our members a

13 summer 2018

better challenge and even reach other players from around the area who might not have given Mansfield a try yet.” Hotel discounts are available to out-of-town guests, and organizers will also offer a free shuttle service to the Music Alley music & arts festival, happening in Historic Downtown Mansfield that Saturday, Sept. 8 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Awards will be given in each division and age category. Competition is expected to be fierce with the added teams. But as many Mansfield players have learned, often the prize at the end of the game is more than points or medals. “My wife and I are new to the area so we don’t know a lot of people,” said Mansfield resident Jim Burk, “but I can come here to play Pickleball and we’re all friends.”

Despite the great benefits of educational apps and programming, electronic devices are often “empty calories” to a growing preschooler’s brain; they occupy space but don’t add the same deep value found in hands-on creative play. And yet, our tech-savvy toddlers have grown up with screens and often need a little extra guidance learning how to play with no cords attached. Mansfield Nature Education programmers say they noticed this growing need and launched a new program this spring designed specifically to fill those gaps.

Nature Education

Imagination Grows Here Nature Play, which began in Apr., invites parents and preschoolers to come to the park for a few hours of device-free fun in the great outdoors. Staff supplies the materials, which includes everything from rocks and

sticks to bamboo and slices of trees. They’ll also be on hand to guide the playtime as needed, offering suggestions or getting games started. But the real goal is to simply set the stage and let the little ones take over. “Preschoolers generally have no shortage of creativity,” said Tiffany Chrzanowski, nature education specialist. “We’re hoping to create a space where they feel encouraged to really expand those ideas, no matter how silly, and engage their parents and friends to join in.” Yes, parents are encouraged to play along, whether that means climbing into the bamboo rod teepee or playing air guitar in the log-andstick rock band. “When parents join in and show they can be silly too, it helps strengthen the bond with their children and also helps the kids feel more confident in stepping outside the usual box to really expand their brains,” said Chrzanowski.

www.mansfieldparks.com

Nature Play is scheduled for multiple occurrences throughout the spring and summer, all of which are completely free for parents and kids to attend. All classes also occur at Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park, which, according to Chrzanowski just adds to the fun. “The park is the perfect place to expand your imagination and get your creative juices flowing, no matter what your age. The colors, the creatures, even the fresh air and sunshine itself. Nature is always growing and changing and surprising us with exciting new ideas, and we’re hoping this program will encourage our littlest visitors to do the same.”

Regular exercise has welldocumented and rarely disputed health benefits, but starting a fitness routine can still be such a daunting task that many put it off. Many Mansfield area senior citizens are learning, however, that it’s truly never too late to start making healthier choices thanks to easy and fun programs with Senior Lifestyles at the Mansfield Activities Center. “I enjoy walking in the gym because it’s safe from tripping hazards or weather worries and you can always find someone to talk to,” said senior

Get fit at any age Betty Corona. Walk & Talk is a designated gym time three days a week for senior citizens to walk at their own pace as they socialize. The camaraderie of sports is often what keeps people engaged, regardless of age. The newest Senior Lifestyles activity, Chair Volleyball, is just as much about the social interactions as it is the fitness benefits.

19 summer 2018

“I love chair volleyball. We’re actually working together instead of just sitting around,” said Suzie McQueen. Wanda Lewis agrees. “It’s so much fun; there is a lot of participation and tons of laughter,” she said. “You will often hear the group laughing during the game and the laughter is contagious. You can’t help but smile whether you’re playing along or just watching.”

In addition to those programs, Senior Lifestyles also offers Light & Easy Exercise, a bi-weekly seated workout class that gets the blood flowing and muscles working in a low-impact format. All senior fitness classes are offered multiple times a week and participation is free. And even though they don’t keep score in the volleyball games, every senior who finds a way to make healthier choices is a winner.

“We had the best time and hope Barks and Rec is an annual event. Loved seeing all the dogs find homes. While we didn’t adopt Freckles (have our hands full already), we know she had a great day and got lots of love from us. Looking forward to next year.”

“I love Mansfield parks they are fun to play at and find cool rocks . Also the swings are my favorite to play on. And I love to walk the trails.”
