Chandler Park Makes a Big Splash

Pond Branch Trail Opening Soon

Texas summers live up to their steamy reputations, and this year was no different. One big change for Mansfield kids this year was the grand opening of Clayton W. Chandler Park Phase II, which included the city’s first splash pad. From the moment the water was turned on at the ceremony on August 19, the park has been packed with little ones cooling off and having a blast. Of course, they aren’t the only ones enjoying all the new features; the seven acre space was redesigned to include a little bit of something for everyone. Tennis courts were upgraded, adding lighting and bleachers. New to the park are basketball and volleyball courts, two age-appropriate playgrounds, and the city’s first designated skateboard plaza. Chandler Park also now has a half-acre pond designed for fishing and surrounded by a walking path with fitness stations. Longtime City Manager Clayton Chandler was thrilled with the renovations on his namesake park, and touched by the dedication.

Construction on the Pond Branch Trail near Historic Downtown is moving along rapidly, and on track to open this winter. The trail, which will create a walkable, rideable connection to the downtown business district and restaurants, begins at the end of east Kimball Street at Pond Street then runs along the creek on the West side, under Broad Street to end near Sycamore Street.

“Having a park named after me isn’t just a great honor, it’s humbling,” said Chandler. “This new expansion, especially, it’s a great representation of what this city is all about. There’s something for everyone, and that’s what we always strive for; meeting the needs of all our residents and making sure everyone feels important.” Chandler Park is located at 1530 Walnut Creek near Wester Middle School.

www.mansfieldparks.com

On the Kimball end, crews have installed a 70-foot wide steel bridge over the creek, which will connect the downtown neighborhoods with the trail and the business district. A trailhead plaza next to Broad Street features seating walls, small columns and a 14 foot identity tower. The plaza also includes bike racks, so trail users can take a break to enjoy shopping or eating at one of the downtown destinations. “This is another important step in the revitalization of Historic Downtown Mansfield,” said Mayor David Cook at the groundbreaking ceremony in April. “More than 125 years ago this area of our city was the heart of a growing community. Today, the borders of our city are much wider and the number of its citizens significantly greater. But the historic downtown is still the heart of our community. As we continue to reimagine what historic downtown will look like and what it will mean to our city’s future, we also look for ways to connect this important place to the rest of our community,” he said. “The Pond Branch trail will extend the Walnut Creek Linear trail system into downtown, bringing

a vital part of our parks and recreation system into our historic downtown, connecting an important part of our city’s past with a vital part of its future.”

City Unveils Memorial Plaza Remember the service, respect the sacrifice. Mansfield city leaders did exactly that on Sept. 25 with the unveiling and dedication of the new Memorial Plaza, designed and constructed through Mansfield Parks staff, which bears the name of police officers and firefighters who have died in the line of duty. As Mayor David Cook said, the intention is not only to recognize those fallen public safety officers, but also to serve as a reminder to all who serve our community that their work is appreciated and their daily sacrifices are not going unnoticed by their city. Added to the wall were Fire Chief Harry D. Blissard and firefighter Shirley Clyde Copeland, who both died after a fire on July 31, 1968, and Danny Cordes, a Mansfield Police Motorcycle Officer who died May 23, 1986 in a hit and run accident while responding to a service call. The Memorial Plaza is located directly in front of City Hall, 1200 E. Broad St., and open to the public. Each of the fallen public safety officers had family members in attendance at the somber dedication ceremony, and were moved by the honor. “Our family is really happy to have the city recognize him,” said Mrs. Linda Cordes, Danny’s widow. “I think Danny would be so proud to show everyone that dreams can come true. He accomplished exactly what he always wanted to do and that’s something to be proud of.” winter 2017-2018 4

Special prizes are awarded for best dressed snowman, adding a whole other (warm and fuzzy!) layer to the fun. The event is timed, with prizes awarded to first, second and third places in each age division.

Katherine Rose Memorial Park is forecasting a blizzard this January, as snowmen of all ages, shapes and sizes gather for the 2018 Snowman Run 5K and Winter Walk. The annual event helps Mansfield area residents kick off the new year with healthy choices and family fun. Winter Walk began years ago as a grand opening celebration to the Walnut Creek Linear Park and has continued as a great, family-friendly way for residents of all ages to come

“We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout; everyone was excited for the event and that makes it all so worthwhile.”

Best of all, the race concludes with a seasonally appropriate “warm down” area complete with hot cocoa, s’mores and a huge fire pit. It’s the perfect way to keep your family active and healthy in these cold winter months.

Last year’s event broke all previous enrollments, with nearly 200 racers laced up and ready to run. “We know Mansfield families love to stay active, but we had no idea how popular the addition of the 5K race would be,” said Angie Henley, Special Events Manager. “We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout; not just the number of people signed up to participate, but the costumes, the enthusiasm…everyone was truly excited for the event and that makes it all so worthwhile.”

Getting in shape is doggone hard, especially when you can’t find the motivation or accountability to get off the couch. This winter, Mansfield Parks & Recreation has the perfect solution…one that’s not only good for your own health, but also helps out a paws-itively great cause! B arks & Rec up, this February we’re offering the Barks & Rec Running Club, a running program that is designed to get the most out of shape athletes off the couch and ready to complete a 5K fun run in just six weeks. Participants will run together with an instructor each Saturday morning and complete two other workouts on their own during the week. The twist on this class, however, is that you won’t be the only ones running. Each participant is paired with a dog from the Mansfield Animal Care & Control for the weekly runs, so our four legged friends get much needed exercise and give you the added motivation to show up!

up to walk or run with the dogs on single days, outside the commitment of the full six week program. This is a great option for experienced runners who don’t need the training, slower guests who simply want to walk a shelter dog, or anyone interested in getting in shape but can’t commit to every week due to

other obligations. Those classes will also be offered Saturday mornings and will also have a portion of the fees donated to the shelter. At the end of the six weeks, participants and public are all invited to participate in the Barks & Rec 5K, Mansfield’s first doggy fun run. Katherine Rose Memorial Park will be packed with puppers and their humans for the event on March 24, which benefits the Mansfield Animal Care & Control. Following the race, guests are invited to hang out and enjoy activities and vendors tailored specifically to dogs and their owners. Entry to the race is $20/pair and includes a T-shirt for the human and a bandana for the dog. 5K entry is included in the registration for the Barks & Rec Running Club, which is $40 for the six-week program and the race. Drop in dog runs are $7/day. Registration is very limited and must be confirmed in advance to allow for accurate dog counts, so please sign up early if you’re interested. More information can be found at mansfieldparks.com under online registration.

“We’re so excited to team up with Parks & Rec for this program,” said Animal Control Manager Lori Strittmatter. “Our dogs love any chance they can get to be outside, run around, and interact with 7 winter 2017-2018

Nature Education

15 winter 2017-2018

817.728.3680

In an age when kids seem to be connected to screens before they can even walk, a surprising trend is taking over Mansfield: scouting. The centuries-old traditions of mastering knots and braving the wilderness is increasingly popular among local kids, who crave something more concrete in the face of all the digital noise in their daily lives. “For me, scouting is about freedom,” said Mansfield Girl Scout Allison, age 13. “Freedom to do things and learn things that a normal teen would never try or even have the chance to do, and without worrying about what people think. We’re in it together, and we love it.”

“Being a Girl Scout makes me feel strong. ...I feel like I’ve been empowered to handle the real world.” -Allison, 13 Nearly 4 million boys and girls combined across the US are currently active in the Boy and Girl Scouts programs, each seeking something a little different. For

some, it’s a way to make new friends. For others, scouting helps them build a skill or follow a passion. For Allison, it’s less about the activities and more about how the activities make her feel. “Being a Girl Scout makes me feel strong. So many kids my age— not just girls—are pampered, and have to rely on others to take care of them. I feel like I’ve been empowered to handle the real world.

Nature Education

Scout’s Honor

Even little things like sewing, cooking, first aid…they’re really simple but lots of kids and even adults don’t know how to do some basic stuff on their own. I can now, and that makes me really proud of myself.” Michelle Draper has been leading a Girl Scout troop for nine years, and says they’ve stuck with the program because it offers so many opportunities beyond cookie sales. “We started when they were so little, just something fun and different,” said Draper. “But each year they’ve learned something new. They’re becoming leaders, and adventurers…

I’m so proud of how they’ve each grown and thankful for what part the scouts played in that.” Draper’s troop recently completed a badge at Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park, where the Naturalists have designed a series of programs specifically to fit both Girl and Boy Scout requirements in activities including hiking, forestry, bird identification, geocaching and even kayaking and fishing. Troop leaders book the class at their convenience and simply show up to let the trained Nature Education Specialists run the program, providing all supplies and leading the instruction. “It was so easy!” said Draper. “We’ve wanted to earn the hiking badges but that’s not something I’m particularly experienced at so it was great to let the instructors take over. The girls had a great time and we’re already planning what we’ll go for next.” For more information about scout programs, and to find a troop near you, visit girlscouts.org or scouting. org. NEW Winter Chemistry (5Y+)

Spring is approaching, and it’s time to get our gardens in shape. Backyard composting is a great source of inexpensive, natural fertilizer. Join us to learn the basics of using yard waste and kitchen scraps to make compost that encourages your new seedlings and sprouts to grow big and strong! Pre-registration required.

Plants and animals that are not native to an area can spell trouble for the ecosystem. What are some of the invasive species that are unwelcome in the DFW area? How much damage can be done by small animals like mussels and beetles? Join a naturalist at Oliver Nature Park to get answers to these questions, and learn what you can do to help keep Mansfield safe from the species invasion! Preregistration required.

The days are getting shorter, and the weather is getting colder. No snow in Texas? No problem! Join us at Oliver Nature Park to make artificial snow and other fun winter chemistry experiments. Pre-registration is required.

In 3,351 hours you can fly to the moon and back 30 times. You can watch every episode of Seinfeld 50 times. You can even read War and Peace 105 times. Or, you could make a difference in the lives of Mansfield Senior Citizens over just a few months. Senior Lifestyles, the program operated out of the Mansfield Activities Center, provides daily activities, classes, meals, holiday celebrations and even field trips to any area senior citizen interested. The entertainment and life enrichment they’ve offered for years are crucial to many participants’ daily lives, often providing the only social interaction they get each day. But none of these programs would be possible without the dedication of a team of tireless volunteers who selflessly give their time and energy day after day. In fact, in just the last six months, our volunteers have already logged over 3,351 hours of service. That’s enough hours to earn a pilot’s license…twice! Thankfully, the more than 50 active volunteers have chosen to fly alongside our seniors and help the program reach new heights of service. Without volunteer help, field trips to the Texas State Fair, or the Senior Art Show, or even the Daily Lunch

Senior Lifestyles Lending a Hand Program would not be possible. Volunteer time doesn’t just help for small daily activities either - the logs of these hours are reported to Sixty and Better, Tarrant County’s 501c(3) aging and wellness organization, which helps the Senior Program provide lunch every day at the MAC. Strong volunteer numbers indicate a strong program, ensuring stronger support from not just the city, but county leadership and beyond. “Volunteers are a vital part of every single aspect of the Mansfield Senior Lifestyles Program,” said

Suzanne Newman, senior coordinator. “They give not just our program, but also the community, valuable services that can’t be replaced.” Each spring, Sixty and Better joins the MAC Senior Lifestyles organization to recognize and honor the previous years’ volunteers with a banquet that includes gifts, speeches, and awards. The volunteers’ hard work, and hours upon hours of service, does not go unnoticed, and organizers believe in rewarding their time. The greatest rewards, of course, come from the little, everyday moments found in making a day just a little bit brighter for a friend and neighbor in need. Why go to the moon, it seems, when you can make giant leaps for mankind in your own backyard? Applications are always being accepted for new volunteers within the Senior Lifestyles program; simply stop in the MAC or give them a call at (817) 728-3680 for more details.
