North Main

WCLT extension

Snowman Run 2019

Construction continues on North Main Street, where the Walnut Creek Linear Trail will soon connect to Historic Downtown Mansfield. Crews have completed the bulk of the construction on the east side sidewalk, including a vehicle barrier and lighting to form a safe, accessible trail for walking or biking. Lighting, landscaping and other ‘soft scape’ projects will continue while the major work shifts to the west side. The entire project should be completed by early spring 2019.

Construction bids have been received for the next phase of the Walnut Creek Linear Trail. The 2.75 mile segment takes the trail from Oliver Nature Park through Philip Thompson to Loyd Park on Joe Pool Lake. This section, like the rest of the linear trail, will include 12-ft wide lighted concrete trails ideal for running and biking. Once bids are evaluated and recommended for approval by council, construction is expected to begin in January and take approximately one year. Future phases of the trail, such as the section running through the upcoming Shops at Broad Street retail development, will connect these two segments for one long spine trail that spans the city from East to West.

Bundle your little snowbunnies and kick off the new year on the right foot with the Snowman Run 5k! The race is open to all ages but especially geared towards kids as a great way to get the whole family active and thinking about fitness, even in the winter months. Best of all, our race ends with hot chocolate and s’mores, giving you that extra motivation to finish strong! The 2019 Snowman Run 5k will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Katherine Rose Memorial Park; registration information can be found at mansfieldtexas.gov/ snowmanrun.

Park Upgrades Thirsty? Four water fountains were added at Clayton W. Chandler Park, including a water-bottle filling station near the tennis courts and dog water bowl attachments on the rest. Basketball Courts at Katherine Rose Memorial Park and Town Park have been resurfaced to add better grip and clearer boundary line markings. All of the surfacing below Rose Park’s playground was also replaced this summer, giving extra bounce in the step of little ones as they play! Rose Park was also named Favorite Playground/Park by readers of Arlington-Mansfield Living Magazine last August, so the new surfacing will get plenty of action.

Admin Building The Mansfield Parks, Recreation, Convention and Visitors Bureau Administration Building on Matlock Road is progressing quickly, right on schedule for a Winter 2019 opening. It includes 20 offices for staff, two conference rooms, a work room and one large community meeting and education space.

www.mansfieldparks.com

Dog Park The Mansfield City Council has directed staff to move forward with final design and construction documents for the city’s first offleash dog park. The planned location for the park is 604 W. Broad Street, the homestead of Mansfield founder Ralph Man. The first phase of the dog park is budgeted at $800,000, which would include the parking lot and infrastructure that will be shared by the Man homestead which is currently being evaluated for restoration. The next step is to bid the project which is estimated to be considered by City Council in early 2019.

StarCenter Mansfield StarCenter Mansfield opened in September as the fifth public-private partnership facility for Mansfield Parks & Recreation. The 80,000 square foot facility has two rinks for hockey, figure skating and league play as well as a large event/meeting space. Find out more about lessons, leagues and open skate times at https://www.nhl.com/stars/ starcenters/mansfield.

Music Alley This summer ended with a series of heavy rains that delighted the grass but disappointed music fans after storms forced the cancellation of Music Alley music & arts festival. Organizers are already planning next year’s event and look forward to an even better (and drier!) celebration for 2019. Save the date for Sept. 7, 2019!

Go Green Next Spring with Pickleball

5 winter 2018-19

817.728.3680

Are you ready to serve your way into the next fitness craze? Or perhaps you’re just looking for a new opportunity to meet new people in the area? Pickleball is sweeping the nation and Mansfield has joined in. Now is the perfect time to join in and make your friends green with envy at how much fun you’re having…and how great your skills will develop with the help of the MAC! The Mansfield Activities Center has offered open court times for pickleball players and a few smaller tournaments over the last few years but based on demand, expanded those offerings this year to rave reviews. In September, the MAC hosted the first Summer Slam Pickleball Tournament, a two-day event at FieldhouseUSA Mansfield that brought over 250 players from across the country. Players ranged from first-time to highly skilled regulars, but all saw great competition and plenty of on the court action.

“My wife and I began playing Pickleball a couple of weeks ago and are obsessed with the game. I am a PGA Golf Professional and have run 100’s of tournaments. The communication and organization was incredible. Kudos to you, your staff and to your volunteers. Everything was top notch and we can’t wait for the next one.”

in size to give plenty of individualized instruction and help new students learn the game or existing players hone their skills. In the spring, MAC sports coordinators are planning another large tournament at FieldhouseUSA, with a few big changes that should attract even more players. “We had such a great response to our summer tournament that we’re raising our game for spring,” said Greg Guse, MAC Recreation Services Supervisor. “The Spring Slam will be three full days of games, and the entire tournament will be USAPA certified.” The USA Pickleball Association is a national organization that governs the sport, regulating official standards and rules and ranking members. Many serious players only play in certified tournaments to protect their ranking and ensure all game play is fair and consistent. The extra validation helps Mansfield’s event draw more skilled players to an already popular tournament. Once here, players can enjoy a pickle of an entirely different kind. The spring slam tournament was scheduled to coordinate with

Mansfield’s world famous Pickle Parade and Palooza, a two-day St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Players in town for competition can spend their evenings cheering on beer barrel racing through historic downtown, watching the pickle-dressed participants of the parade or checking out the nightly live concerts. “We saw with the Summer Slam just how many people are happy to travel from out of town for a good event, so we wanted to plan this one at a time where they’d have even more to do,” said Guse. “The Pickle Parade is a perfect pairing to our tournament and should give visitors even more reason to come check us out.”

From Brave and Robin Hood to The Hunger Games and The Lord of the Rings, the bow and arrow is a classic choice for heroes and heroines throughout history and popular culture. Now, thanks to a new program from Oliver Nature Park’s Nature Education team, Mansfield area outdoor enthusiasts have the chance to aim for a new and exciting mark. Introduction to Archery classes start late December at McClendon Park

Nature Education

Take Aim at a New Skill “We decided to offer this class as another great way to enjoy the outdoors and respect nature,” said Yvette Dorval, Nature Education Specialist and USA Archery certified archery instructor. “Plus it’s just really fun!” The classes will begin with an emphasis on safety and proper equipment handling. Students will learn about the different bow types and how to develop proper stance form and target aiming. Archery is adaptable for any age because bows can be adjusted to fit however much weight you can pull on the string.

practice and also respect for nature. The more time you spend outside, the more conscious and caring of it you become.” The program begins this winter with a series of hour-long classes on weekends and school holidays, divided by age group. Based on demand, Nature Education staff plans to expand the number of dates offered and length of each individual class, both giving more people an opportunity to try it out and giving students the option to return and get additional training to improve their skills. “Learning archery is a practice in perseverance,” said Dorval. “You’re not going to get it right the first time. But as with just about everything else, practice makes perfect.”

According to Dorval, the benefits of archery training go beyond the target range and can have a long-lasting impact. East and are broken down into four age groups from 5 years old to adults, designed specifically for ideal safety and skill development conditions. All equipment is provided, and no prior experience is necessary.

“Once you find the right place to aim and the proper stance you just want to keep getting better. It kind of gets to be meditative because you’re only thinking about one thing and tuning out everything else. Archery builds incredible confidence through

Participation is completely free, and players receive a senior discount on their purchase should all the action make them hungry. The restaurant provides all the prizes, which range from food coupons to t-shirts and the much-coveted stuffed cow mascot toys.

Senior Citizens and bingo go together like French fries and ketchup, and nowhere is that more true than in Mansfield. Twice a month, seniors from across the area gather at the local Chick-fil-A stores for a morning of free bingo and conversation, thanks to a creative program by the store and partnership with the Mansfield Activities Center’s Senior Lifestyles program.

“We hope that seniors get a chance to have fun and get to know other seniors in the community.”

“Our members get so excited for the prizes,” said Suzanne Newman, Senior Coordinator. “It’s so fun for them to get something unique and I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t want a free meal. The game is just that much more fun when you know there might be a milkshake at the end!”

“It’s great for our members to see fresh faces and a good way for us to meet new people and spread the word about all the senior services available through Senior Lifestyles at the MAC.” Mansfield Chick-fil-A stores offer bingo twice a month at rotating locations. The first Thursday of each month games are held at the Broad Street location, and on the third Tuesday they are at the store on Walnut Creek Drive. For the restaurant owners, it’s a way to give back not just in product, but in time. “The staff LOVE bingo days,” said Moore. “They are constantly asking

Bree Moore, Chick-fil-A Mansfield Marketing Director

“We decided to start senior bingo cause it’s something fun and different for the seniors to do during the week,” said Bree Moore, the Marketing Director over Chick-fil-A’s two Mansfield locations. “We hope that seniors get a chance to have fun and get to know other seniors in the community.” www.mansfieldparks.com

Sponsor

spotlight This quarter’s featured sponsor is Living Church, a nondenominational congregation located at the corner of Matlock Road and Country Club Drive. Founded in 2010, the church has been at their current location since 2015. Their three weekly services draw around 1000 people, and the congregation is active throughout the week with youth/teen programming, specialized small groups, worship music and more. “Our heart is that church shouldn’t be boring but that we should be able to come in and worship a fun God and that’s what we do,” said Lead Pastor Truston Baba. “Our logo is an asterisk. It’s more than a shape, it’s a symbol, reminding us that we can never be satisfied, but always striving to attain all that God has for us. We believe there’s more.” Living Church has been an active sponsor with Mansfield Parks & Recreation programs and events, most notably at our annual Rockin’ 4th of July event. Each year, hundreds of volunteers from the church spend hours helping with set up, operations and cleanup of the many activities offered to families as part of the event. Their assistance helps us make the Rockin’ 4th bigger and better each year. For more information about Living Church, visit livingchurch.com or find them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @livingchurch
