Recently, six future teachers paired up with mentor educators for a live virtual teaching workshop conference hosted by the San Francisco Exploratorium. The Future Teacher program and career pathway offered at Manteca High is geared for students who are interested in becoming an educator. Students are paired with mentor teachers and are provided with work experience, dual enrollment offerings, partnership opportunities with University of Pacific and Teachers College of San
Joaquin, and after they graduate, the connections they need to be successful. “We normally do the annual Exploratorium conference in person,” explained Stacia Lagomarsino, Advantage Future Teacher Coordinator. “The conference was made virtual this year, and taught future-teacher students how to teach virtually!” Ms. Lagomarsino explained that with many teaching jobs being solely online, it was a timely opportunity for students to learn

how to create and implement a lesson plan via a virtual platform. Specifically, how to develop a science lesson plan that is hands-on. Student Leslie Olmos joined as a freshman and is in her third year of the program. She knew she wanted to pursue teaching and appreciates the comprehensive design of the Future Teacher career pathway. I love the hands-on experience we receive through the program,” Leslie stated. “We’ve participated in exercises where we teach teachers, create actual lesson plans, and partner with MELS garage to teach STEM to students and their families.” Leslie’s mentor teacher is Elyce Smith from Manteca High. The program is in year 4 and Stacia hopes it will expand to other high schools.
