Readers Today, Leaders Tomorrow Celebrating Early Literacy in Manteca Unified
Read Across America 2022 March was booked with events supporting early childhood literacy. This month Manteca Unified celebrated Read Across America Day alongside schools all over the nation; however, our school sites took the opportunity to inspire young readers with a full week of literary activities.
Literacy skills can have a major influence on one’s education and imagination, which is why it is so important to encourage children to read and help them develop a love for reading. To learn about the power of literacy and see how MUSD celebrated Read Across America watch the video below!
see that reading is fun for the whole community!” Organized by Outreach Assistant Jadon Thibodeaux, Family Literacy Night featured several vendors and community partners; San Joaquin County Library, first responders, and youth mentoring programs like Give Every Child a Chance are just a few who attended to show their support and offer resources to families. In addition, several classrooms transformed into stations with reading activities, campfire stories, and a read-along with local author Sasha Lang who read “Can’t Share Your Germs!!!” a sing-along story she wrote to teach children how they can prevent the spread of germs.
And outside of each classroom? Stacks of donated books children and their families could take home! With the help of teachers, staff, leadership students, and the community, Family Literacy Night was a hit! English language arts teacher, Mary Hall, was blown away by the night’s success, “Our parents and students deserved
a night like this. The vendors brought in by Jadon really had the parents in mind, there were tons of resources available for nearly everyone. Widmer staff and parents are a family, Literacy Night was proof of that!” By providing resources and encouraging students to read outside of the classroom, Joesph Widmer is helping students build comprehension skills that will serve them well beyond their school years. Ms. Hall believes that it is extremely important to celebrate reading as a community, “Reading allows our students
to escape into stories and adventures, it sparks their creativity, and reading is the foundation of everything. It crosses all subject matter and helps students better comprehend subject matter from other classes.”
