Soul Lovers Wanted to Join Local Choir!
I
f you’re a fan of singing soul, funk and Motown tunes - listen up; Shout Chorus wants you to get in the groove and join them! The fun choir, which has been running since 2013, was created by Nikki Franklin who wanted enthusiastic singers to share their love of music, without having to audition or being able to read music. The twenty-five members are currently learning new arrangements, created by Nikki, with soul, funk, gospel, Motown and blues vibes and would like like-minded local residents to join them! “Nikki has created this dynamic, fun, friendly choir to give local singers an
opportunity to sing professional quality arrangements, completely by ear,” Shout Chorus member, Trudy Gillard says. “She is an absolute inspiration and has a unique way of teaching. It’s such a feel good factor when we achieve a finished piece!” Meeting every Wednesday at St Andrews Church in Furnace Green, Crawley, between 7.30 – 9pm, the group regularly perform in the community, with live musicians – giving members the opportunity to showcase their vocal talents! The first visit to choir is free and new members can just drop in! However, if you’d like more information, please visit: www.shoutchorus.co.uk or email: info@shoutchorus.co.uk.
A Walk to Remember O
n Sunday 13th September, local hospice St Catherine’s will be celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of their Balcombe Walk – and you’re invited! The family-friendly twelve mile ramble through the stunning Sussex woodland is FREE to enter and is a firm favourite event for so many local residents who want to raise money for the Crawley-based charity or to remember and commemorate the life of a loved one. “Those we care for at the hospice leave behind children, parents, grandparents, siblings and friends,” Louise Brown, Events Fundraiser explains. “At St Catherine’s, we understand that their journey continues, even after a loved one dies and do everything we can to offer support and guidance to the whole family, for as long as they need.” “By taking part in the Balcombe Walk, you will help to raise money to pay for our vital services.
6
/RHUncovered
Although this is a free event, we encourage everyone taking part to raise sponsorship money; £35 is enough to pay for a counselling session for a bereaved relative, giving them an opportunity to talk about their feelings.” This year, as well as having two starting points (the first at Victory Hall, Balcombe and the second at Ardingly College Preparatory School, Haywards Heath), walkers who want to remember that special someone have the opportunity to have their loved one’s name written on a sunflower, for a donation, to be displayed on the walk. The sunflowers can then be kept as a permanent memento of the day. Join the St Catherine’s team on Sunday 13th September for a day of celebration, stunning scenery and homemade cakes, by visiting: www.stch.org.uk.

Looking for something to do? T
hen why not volunteer? Whether you’re looking to socialise, now the kids are heading back to school or you’re hoping to improve your skill set, or perhaps you just want to give something back to the community – whatever your reason; there’s never been a better time to tick volunteering off that bucket list… Over the past year, Crawley Community and Voluntary service, based at Gleneagles Court on Brighton Rd, have had over 350 volunteering enquiries, with Volunteer Centre Coordinator, Shelley Jones giving 1-2-1 support herself, to almost 100 interested local residents. However, with the launch of a new service – finding a volunteering placement just got even easier! “Our new self -service facility means that finding out about volunteering opportunities has never been easier,” Shelley explains. “Just pop in to our reception area between 9am and 4pm and use our touch screen computer to access a world of volunteering opportunities in our local area.” We heard from local volunteers about just why they volunteer: “I wanted to challenge the stereotype of being a young mum,” a volunteer for a children’s charity told us. “I was tarred with the same brush as everyone else… but I wanted to prove them wrong. Volunteering is great because it is not only rewarding, but you also get the chance to train in something you want to do.” While a volunteer for Crawley Community and Voluntary Service told us: “Volunteering is important to me. I feel I am doing something useful for society. Also, doing it is good to meet new people. It is good to put your skill to good use and learn new ones.”

Paws to Beat Blood Cancer D
id you know that every twenty minutes, in the UK alone, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia or lymphoma? One local resident who knows just how devastating these cancers can be is Pound Hill’s Jayne Archer, who lost her husband Mark Henry Archer, suddenly, to mantle cell (a form of lymphoma), just five years ago. However, if you’ve been following Jayne’s fundraising story in RH Uncovered, you’ll know that she is determined to raise £50K, over the next four years, to help fund research into beating blood cancer. We caught up with Jayne to find out her pawfect fundraising plans for blood cancer awareness month: “On Sunday 13th September, at Buchan Country Park, between 10am and 3pm, I’ll be holding my fourth Paws to Beat Blood Cancer walk. I started Paws… as I do lots of different events throughout the year and wanted to do something where Hendrix, my Cavalier King Charles, is involved too,” Jayne says.
“Last year, we had lots of dogs come along and lots of happy humans strolling away with coffee and cake, raising £350.70.” “All dogs who take part will get a collar tag medal and poop bag holder, along with lots of fresh water and biscuits,” the local fundraiser continues. “For us humans there will be, for a small donation; cakes, baguettes, tea, coffee, cold drinks.” “The whole family can come along and get some fresh air and enjoy a countryside walk, while the dogs can socialise and make some new woofy friends. Whist having a lovely day out, we can make some money and help save lives!” Entry costs £10 per dog with one adult and £2 per extra person, with all proceeds going to the Mark Henry Archer Memorial Fund at Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research (soon to become known as Bloodwise). Enthusiastic Golfers Required!
I
f you love tee-ing off; make sure you take part in Autism Support Crawley’s golf day on Saturday 12th September at Tilgate Forest Golf Centre for a day of golf, bacon rolls and fundraising! This is the third annual golf day, held by the group, where all money raised will help them to support their five hundred plus local members, who are the parents and carers of children and young people on the autistic spectrum. “Last year, we raised £1961 which was more than double the total from the year before!” Autism Support Crawley’s Maria Cook (formally known as Box), says. “We were overwhelmed when we found out. We have used the funds to continue to run our evening meetings for our parent/carers, organised social events for them as well, such as a post-Christmas meal at the Toby Carvery and a trip to see Autism’s Got Talent in London, a wonderful event celebrating people with Autism organised by our group Patron, Anna Kennedy OBE.
“We also hired out the Stadium Suite of Crawley Town Football Club to host a public event with guest speaker Dean Beadle, who proved to be very popular.” Tee off will be at 11am, with bacon rolls and tea/ coffee included in the price of a day’s play (£30.00). Trophy presentations and evening entertainment, including a raffle and live music from Brown Bread, will then be held at The White Knight, Worth Road, Pound Hill from 7:30pm - where all are invited to join. “The whole day is non-stop fun, from start to finish and very family orientated,” Maria continues. “Everyone is welcome to come and support a fantastic voluntary organisation in the evening. It would be great to see as many people as possible and to help us continue to raise such important awareness and ongoing support for so many families locally.” To find out more or secure your place email: maria@autismsupportcrawley.co.uk.
Henry Smith - Budget update I
n the Summer Budget following the General Election, the Chancellor of the Exchequer confirmed the tax-free Personal Allowance will go up, a National Living Wage will be introduced, and National Insurance bills will be cut. The tax-free Personal Allowance – the amount people earn before Income Tax is paid – will increase further from April 2016, to £11,000. Over the last five years, this Allowance has continuously increased; from £6,475 in 2010, to £10,600 today, and should reach £12,500 by the end of this Parliament. More than 53,000 people in Crawley are expected to benefit from these changes in 2016, according to estimates from HM Treasury and the Office for National Statistics. Around 1,000 people in our town will be taken out of paying income tax altogether.
The Allowance has increased since 2010, and the typical taxpayer will be £905 better off than they would have been in 2010/11. 3.8 million people will not be paying any income tax at all. For our firms, the Chancellor also announced an increase in the Employment Allowance, to £3,000, from April 2016, which equates to being able to hire four full-time members of staff on the new National Living Wage, and pay no National Insurance at all. I hope this will see a further fall in the Crawley unemployment rate, currently (at the time of writing) at 1.6%, having fallen by around a quarter in the last year alone. If you have any issues or concerns you would like to raise, please either write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA, call my office on 01293 934554, or email me directly at: henry.smith.mp@parliament.uk

Supporting Older Residents C
reated in 2006, Crawley Older Persons Forum provides a key meeting place for fifty organisations, who engage with our older local residents, to share information, assess local need and raise issues facing older people in Crawley with local decision makers. Over the past nine years, COPF has worked closely with organisations such as Age UK, CAMEO (Come and Meet Each Other Club) and Crawley Wellbeing – the latter, with whom they created a helpful directory with: “The most pressing issue facing older people, which has been identified by forum members, is the issue of isolation,” Lisa Phillips from Crawley’s Community and Voluntary Service, who co-ordinates the bi-monthly meetings explains. “So many older people live alone and don’t see other people regularly. Unsurprisingly, this has a negative impact on both their physical, and their mental health and wellbeing. Addressing this issue is complex and multi-faceted, but one thing which forum members felt contributed to the issue of isolation was lack of information about support and activities available to older people in the local community. “COPF, in partnership with Crawley Wellbeing, has been instrumental in producing a local paper directory, Crawley Older People’s Directory, which was launched last summer, and is currently in circulation around the town.
14
/RHUncovered
The directory includes information on services, support, activities and help available for older people in Crawley. Copies can be obtained, free of charge, from Crawley Wellbeing at K2.” Representatives from local charities and organisations, who work with older people in Crawley are invited to join the bi-monthly Monday morning meetings at the Civic Hall to learn more about local services and to find ways to work together, creatively. Jim Piercey, Chairman of the Older Persons Forum said: “The Crawley Older Persons Forum is a unique network of local groups and organisations working with older people in Crawley. “We meet regularly to learn, assess and report on the local needs of older people, and to share information about the services and support we all offer.“ “We always welcome new members to the forum. If you represent a local group or organisation, and would like to know more about what’s happening locally to support older people in Crawley – get in touch!” Crawley Older Persons Forum can be contacted by calling: 01293 657011 or emailing: lisa.phillips@crawleycvs.org.

n the motor trade you hear a lot of different expressions, many of which are far too vulgar to repeat in print. However, there are the odd few that are quite poignant and even, dare I say it, useful. One that isn’t used enough these days though is “prevention is better than the cure”.
If we take a misty-eyed look back in time to the middle to late part of the 20th century, owning a car was still something of a luxury. It wasn’t something that everyone could afford and, in the grand scheme of things, still quite a new and novel thing. Many say it was a simpler time too. There were no computers, there were only three channels on the black and white TV, hair was longer and clothes were stranger. Things were made differently too. Rather than meticulous robotics putting things together in an airtight chamber, it might have once been done by a bloke called Dave wearing a flat-cap, with a half-smoked ‘roly’ hanging out of his mouth. He’d have no doubt used a hammer, and at least three different swear words as part of the process too. As such, if you wanted things to last, they needed looking after a bit more. Take the motor car, for example, if you wanted it to stay reliable, you’d need to be getting it serviced at least twice a year. As time has marched on, cars might have got more expensive, but manufacturers make many hundreds of thousands more of them, the process by which they are built is a lot better and the materials used, (in most instances), are a lot higher quality. The net result of this is vehicle manufacturers extending their ‘recommended service intervals’ further and further apart. It’s all well and good that engine oils are a lot better quality and that an interval of over 15,000 miles between changes is okay, but a lot can happen to a car in that time. If it wasn’t for the annual MOT test (which is only really a basic inspection of the car and by no means a full certificate of health) there would be some very dangerous cars on the road. Not only that, it’s not unusual to find yourself hit with a larger than expected bill, as it’s been 18,000 miles since someone last looked at the car and things have worn out under there. Our roads aren’t exactly billiard table smooth, are they!?

/RHUncovered
We are seeing a lot more people driving their cars until they break, these days, which is a real shame. This is partly due to those ever-expanding service schedules and partly due to the fact that owning a car today isn’t the privilege that it once was. It’s almost a consumable in today’s modern society. There are over double the amount of cars on the roads in the UK now, compared to when my grandfather set up Morley Auto Services in 1966 and most of them seem to be on the M25 when I want to use it. Going back to my original point of prevention being better than the cure, here is a prime example: Vehicles fitted with a timing belt require this to be changed at regular intervals. It’s what you might call a service item, it does wear out. In some cases it’s a time consuming, and therefore costly, job. Let us say that all-in it costs £300 to do the job on Mr Smith’s car. Mr Smith is unsure whether he wants the job doing as it seems like a lot of money to spend when there are no obvious faults with the car, so Mr Smith leaves it. Two weeks later, Mr Smith’s timing belt snaps and the engine’s valves and pistons (previously kept apart by this belt) now become very intimate. What would have been a £300 job is now a £1500 engine re-build. Obviously this is a worst-case scenario, but it’s a perfect example of when prevention is better than the cure. The same can be said of a set of brake pads, something that would be checked when the wheels come off as part of a routine service. A £70 brake pad change suddenly becomes a £200 set of discs and pads when the pads are left to wear out to the extent that they damage the disc. It boils down to the fact that just like the human body, if you look after it, you won’t be at the doctors every two weeks. If you act on early warning signs, there will hopefully be no nasty surprises later down the line. So do yourself, your car, and your bank balance a favour, and get it looked at properly at least once a year.

Mediterranean fish bake
This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh flavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but the meaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fillet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices.
Serves 4, Ready in 50 minutes
2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good quality fruity one) 350g small new potatoes, halved 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 225g small plum tomatoes, halved 4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g) 50g butter, softened Pared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once. 2. Add the peppers and tomatoes to the roasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Make a space in the tin and add the monkfish fillets. Return the roasting tin to the oven for 10 minutes. 3. Dot the butter over the fish fillets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender. 4. Slice each monkfish fillet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges. Tip: Replace the peppers with sliced courgettes, chunks of celery and baby button mushrooms, if liked.

Managing the Menopause A
re you suddenly finding yourself feeling hotter than the Gobi Desert? You know the feeling, as you settle down for a night’s sleep you want to throw the duvet out the window? I’m talking about the signs that the menopause may be starting.
What can Doctors help you with during these changes within your body? The most important thing to say is, don’t put off going and speaking to your GP. They can help guide you. They have many links to other organisations who can help with this transition your body is going through.
What are possible signs and symptoms that it may has started?
Doctors have a wide array of medications available including HRT, which research has shown can help to restore the level of the hormone, oestrogen. Many other medications are available, which may help with the hot flushes, nausea or other changes in mood.
• Hot flushes or night sweats • Feeling your heart racing • Difficulty in sleeping, either going to or staying asleep • Reduced libido • Mood changes, such as feeling tired, irritable, depressed or anxious • Concentration loss or poor memory
Are there any natural alternatives available? Exercise has been shown not only to help with some of the symptoms but also by exercising you help protect your body from heart disease and osteoporosis. Always seek advice from a fitness or medical professional before commencing any exercise. Relaxation techniques or selfhypnosis may also help. Learning how to manage the anxious thoughts around these changes can give you back a feeling of being in control. Acupuncture, Aromatherapy and other alternative remedies are widely available too. It’s always important to get yourself checked out by a GP if concerned, and then find a course of treatments or combination of things that work for you. Our bodies are all different, so if one doesn’t work, try an alternative. Don’t give up. I know there are some extremely knowledgeable professionals in this area who are on hand to help and give advice.

There are many ways to help you through this time of changes, always speak to someone. It’s important to know you are not alone. Becky Wells, www.beckywells.com Personal Development Hypnotherapist www.payitforwarduk.net
What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a natural state of heightened awareness that occurs within all of us. It allows us to open our minds to beneficial suggestions and allows the client to use their imagination to make positive changes. A brief way to describe a feeling similar to hypnosis is that moment you’ve been watching TV and not heard a word that’s been said, even though you’ve been staring straight at the screen. Alternatively it’s the car journey where you wonder how you got to a certain place. Your mind is on auto-pilot and must have been in control, otherwise there would probably have been an accident. What can hypnotherapy help with? • Agoraphobia • Anxiety • Blushing • Confidence Building • Depression • Fears and Phobias • Gambling • Guilt • Habits and Compulsions • IBS • Insecurity • Insomnia • Memory Recall • Nail biting • Nervousness • Pain Control • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder • Panic Attacks • Public Speaking • Smoking • Stress Management • Timidity • Trauma • Weight Problems • Worry

10 ways to create a new room in your house
Just had a baby? Started working from home? Run out of storage? Then you need to stretch your home. 1. Build an extension
2. Convert the loft
Pros: Adding a rear extension to a kitchen can be a great way to create a multi-functional family room. Filling in the side return in a typical Victorian terrace is popular. It may be possible to add a second storey for a new bedroom or bathroom on the first floor, too.
Pros: Create a bedroom (perhaps with a bathroom), a home office or playroom, without taking space from the garden.
Cons: Reduces garden size. Unsympathetic extensions feel like an add-on. Regulations:Can often be done without planning permission, depending on size and height. Check your permitted development rights with your local council’s planning department. You’ll also need building regulations approval and, if you’re semi-detached or in a terrace, party wall consent from neighbours. Visit www.planningportal.gov.uk for more information.
Cons: Not every loft has the headroom or enough useable space. More difficult and expensive if your roof isn’t traditionally built. Regulations: Can often be done without planning permission, depending on size and height. Check your permitted development rights with your local council’s planning department. You’ll also need building regulations approval and, if you’re semi-detached or in a terrace, party wall consent from neighbours. Visit www.planningportal.gov.uk for more information.
3. Convert the cellar Pros: Turn a cellar into family living space, a useful utility area, a home office or even a self-contained annexe, without altering the outside of your home.
Regulations: If you just want to turn an existing cellar into a normal room, it’s classed as a change of use and doesn’t need planning permission. But if you lower the floor or extend, you’re likely to need permission, so check with your local authority. And Cons: Often more expensive, per square metre, than you’ll need party wall consent from any adjoining other ways of creating extra space. Can be difficult to neighbours. In both cases you must comply with Building Regulations.gov.uk for more information. get enough headroom and light into the new room.

4. Build a room in the garden
5. Divide a room into two
Pros: The building work will hardly bother you.
Pros: Create a bedroom (perhaps with a bathroom), a home office or playroom, without taking space from the garden.
Cons: Not suitable for small gardens. Could look like a shed, security is an issue, and if not properly insulated it will be too cold to use in winter.
Cons: You’ll need to create a separate doorway for the room, and include an opening window.
Regulations : A simple garden room may be exempt from planning permission and Building Regulations, but if it’s laid on permanent foundations and connected to mains power, water and sewerage, you’ll need both.
Regulations: Planning permission is not usually needed, but Building Regulations apply to new walls, doors, windows and electrical work.
6. Put in an ensuite
7. Build on top of your garage
Cons: Installing an ensuite at the expense of a bedroom could knock your property’s value.
Cons: Foundations may not be strong enough, so the garage will have to be underpinned.
Regulations: Planning permission isn’t usually needed, but Building Regulations approval is.
Regulations: You’ll need planning permission and Building Regulations.
Pros: Loved by buyers. Can be fitted into quite a small space.
Pros: A first floor extension on top loses no garden space and is often relatively easy.
8. Convert your understairs space 9. Convert your garage Pros: Turns a poorly used area into a valuable extra room – perfect for a ground-floor loo, an extra shower room or a study area. Cons: You’ll have to find extra space to store that under-stairs stuff. If putting in a loo or bathroom, ventilation and connecting to drainage may be a problem. Regulations: Building Regulations approval is necessary if you’re installing a bathroom.
Pros: It’s a relatively straightforward job to turn it into a valuable indoor space. Cons: Foundations may need strengthening. Avoid if you live in an area where parking is at a premium. Regulations: Planning permission is not usually required, but Building Regulations approval is.
10. Add a conservatory Pros: Adds extra living space and brings the garden into your home. Relatively inexpensive. Cons: A poorly built conservatory can be too hot in summer, freezing cold in winter and full of condensation. Takes space from your garden. Regulations: Many conservatories are exempt from planning permission and building regulations, but check with your local planning department first.

Unwelcome Visitors
Ask a dictionary the definition of a weed and you’ll read that it’s ‘a plant growing in the wrong place’. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multi-pronged attack strategy.
Off with their Heads Whatever the weed problem, it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed. Make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to procreate. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth. Stop Stowaways When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those hidden stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). Spaghetti roots Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and far-reaching underground stems or roots. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots into little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process. Lawn Louts Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best, albeit slow, methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisy-grubber tool. Deep Rooted Problems Some weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run.

Laying Carpet For large areas, try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fluffy side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fibres, not synthetic or else you’ll be left with it in the soil, and for allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet. Time it Right Some weeds such as the purple flowered oxalis spread by forming tiny ‘bulbils’ or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out now, the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then. Hoe, hoe, hoe An old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. They’re a great way to weed your garden, especially if it’s largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly. Careful what you Compost Only compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any flowering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening products including Pippa’s favourite weeder, Nemaslug, Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece and lots more besides.
