Something for everyone at the Festival of Surrey Life The Fox Revived pub in rural Norwood Hill near Horley is once again to host the annual ‘Festival of Surrey Life’.

It’s an event everyone can get involved in, whether attending for a fun day out or participating as an exhibitor or performer. Held on May 25 and 26 (the Bank Holiday weekend), it is the brainchild of The Fox Revived publicans Jon and Paula Briscoe. Entry is free.

Now in its fourth year, the 2014 festival promises to be the best yet and is expected to attract 1,000 people each day. It’s a celebration of all that is great about the county, including food & drink producers, performers and a wide range of activities.

“This really is a collaborative event,” comments Jon. “It’s one big party where everyone can participate and join in for the entertainment of others. Each year we manage to bring together an eclectic group of producers, performers and activities – there really is something for everyone across the weekend. Activities at the 2013 Festival of Surrey Life included street dancing, birds of prey, steam engines, paintballing, quad bikes, music, line dancing and many other stalls and attractions.

I expect 2014 to be bigger, better and a great celebration. It’s a simple concept, but as is often the case, it’s the simple things that work the best and this is some old fashioned fun for the family to enjoy.”

The festival runs from 12 noon until 5.30pm on both days.

Community Noticeboard Hello and happy May! For me, the year 2014 is just going too fast. It doesn’t feel like that long ago I was researching and writing the community section for January, and now we’re nearly half way through the year!

But with that aside, onto the good stuff! There is so much happening in May in Haywards Heath and surrounding areas, so I have done a monthly round-up of the events to make sure you’re in the loop! It’s a busy month, so make some time to take part, help out, get involved or simply enjoy!

This month, the main interview was with Fred Bone, the publicity officer of the Twinning Association.

He told me about their recent visit to France, the meaning of twin towns and how it all started! I took a little venture to find out what a small, local school was doing in Warninglid, and I chatted to the founders of Cancervive – if you haven’t heard of them, read on to find out.

The Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride 18th May The Bike Ride is in its fourth year and bigger and better! The ride is in aid of local cancer patients together with St Catherine’s Hospice, including four refreshed routes and a new mini bike ride for the under-fives.

Community News Cancervive charity seeking support Cancervive, the self-help group for family, friends and colleagues of cancer patients, is looking for volunteers to help them with fundraising and events, including an accountant, secretary and any publicity help.

charity was founded, “After losing two wives to cancer (pictured), Paul felt that there was not enough support for the family and friends of cancer patients, so he set up Cancervive to support through the whole of the cancer journey.”

Rebecca Huggett, co-founder of the charity, spoke to RH Uncovered about the work they do and why the charity was set up. Rebecca co-founded the charity with Paul Huggett, her Dad. She is on the executive committee and manages the event organising and Cancervive puts on many services to make promotional materials. this happen, “We run support groups, home visits, a telephone helpline and The charity was established in 2007 to address the needs of anyone whose family we have recently set up an online forum,” or friends are cancer sufferers, providing a Rebecca explains. Cancervive runs an annual fundraising motorcycle run, which has been going since 2009. Rebecca explains that the money raised goes towards paying for the room hire for the support groups and more advertising – everyone that works for the charity are volunteers and do not get paid for their service.

Warninglid pupils explore outside Warninglid Primary School is a friendly school in the RH17 area, situated between Warninglid and Slaugham.

There are 60 children on roll in three classes from reception to Year 6, and we sought to find out what they had been getting up to and how the community can support their school.

“Our intrepid hunters went off in search of clues and found all sorts of things in the school grounds, including suspicious looking scratches on the trees, frozen dragons’ breath and even some dragons’ tears,” said Jules. “At one point we even found a giant egg that had hatched… but there was no sign of the baby dragon!”

Jules Churchill, school administrator, told us about an imaginative task the children were set earlier this year, “The children were hunting down dragons!” she explained.

The children had heard the story of The Snow Dragon, and the aim of the ‘dragon hunt’ was to engage the children’s imagination and improve their writing.

“As well as having lots of fun, the children have learnt a lot too. We have seen some exciting writing and some very interesting chemical analysis and chromatography (care of Kestrels, our Year 5/6 class).

Clues were put out by the staff, who all worked with the children to enhance the experience.

Skylarks (Years 2, 3 & 4) have been learning about volcanoes (the natural habitat of fire dragons) and Robins (Years R & 1) have investigated the polar regions where the Snow Dragons live.”

“NB: the children do know that dragons aren’t real but have suspended disbelief for the duration!” added Jules.

The school’s PTA, Warninglid Home School Association work hard to organise social and fundraising events to enrich the educational experiences of their children, using their funds to contribute to the upkeep of the adventure trail, buy interactive whiteboards and new curtains for the hall.

A European friendship:

Traunstein and Bondues You’ll probably have seen the signs showing that Haywards Heath is twinned with Traunstein in Germany and Bondues in France, but few know what this actually entails. Twinning is the coming together of two communities seeking to take action with a European perspective. Those who know most about our twin towns, are the members of the Haywards Heath Twinning Association (HHTA). The association was formed by the town, and the twinning was initiated by the then Town Mayor, Sue French (current Vice President), David Turner (former President), Tony Manville (former Chairman) and Carol Preston (the Town Clerk at the time.)

“We want to involve people of all ages, occupations and interests to encourage business tourism education and cultural activities,” he said.

I was interested in who initiated this relationship between our twin towns.

“In the early days, it was Oathall School exchanging with the school in Traunstein on an annual trip starting 35 years ago,” Fred explained. “This exchange still goes on today, and the very first student that came on the first coach is now the Chairman of the Freundschaftsclub in Traunstein that is very much involved in our twinning activities.”

Community News Antiques Roadshow star visits Ceramics Group Andy McConnell, one of Britain’s leading authorities on glassware, and regular expert on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, visited the Haywards Heath Ceramics Group in February, giving a witty and instructive talk.

We met with Mary Foster, publicity officer from the group, to learn more about his visit.

“Andy’s talk had great enthusiasm, exposing the amount of detective work required in to enable the item to be correctly attributed,” said Mary. “Andy touched briefly on the earlier decorators of glassware; this craft had a very limited number of experts and one of the foremost was James Giles.”

When asked his views towards local ceramic groups, Andy admitted they needed all the support they can get: “They provide the inspiration for the continuance of interest in ceramics and glass. Local groups have a huge role to play in sustaining that interest and expanding the knowledge in glass and ceramics.”This year, Andy is working hard recording the Antiques Roadshow for BBC, and is writing a book on Swedish Glass Design.

The Haywards Heath Ceramics Group was founded thirty years ago – a self-funding organisation, providing an important local social link for those who have specific interest in the history/ manufacture of pottery, porcelain, enamel and glass.

They have a programme of well-known RH Uncovered posed some questions to Andy, on behalf of the ceramics group to ask speakers and experts in their field, about his visit: “As always, my visit was very providing monthly, hour-long lectures.

Mary calls them a ‘small friendly group’: “Members’ interests extend from novice to those with exceptional knowledge, some with small collections to extensive,” she explained. They meet on the second Thursday of each month at Clair hall, for coffee and lectures. For more information on membership or events, visit hhcg.org.uk.

Your Councillors: Jacqui Hollister Little of us know what goes on behind the scenes in the local town, yet when I delve into council business and personal experiences, it’s clear how much hard work is put in.

Jacqui Hollister became a Councillor in May 2011, after being approached by the Conservative party where she had helped out the previous year.

She represents the Franklands ward in Haywards Heath.

When asked about the achievement she is most proud of, Jacqui explained the redesign and development of Views Path Recreational Ground in Northlands Wood, “Following discussions with the council, designing ideas and gaining financial support, my ward colleagues and I held a consultation with residents to address any concerns.

“To date, the additional play equipment has been installed, new fencing is now in place, an all-weather ball area is now also in place, we replaced the muddy clay, water-logged area which previously could only be used a few weeks each year!

Two goal posts have been put in place replacing the single goal post and foliage planting has started. Paths linking the areas are still due next…!”

With her interests at heart, Jacqui opted to be on the Environment and General Purposes committee: “I was elected as chairperson. This committee was something I felt I could contribute a lot to and it would also be interesting. I was excited to be involved with the look and feel of the town for events and town ideas.”

In her spare time (aside from work and being a Councillor), Jacqui is keen to redecorate her house and redesign her garden this year, taking inspiration from her committee projects! Oh and of course soak up the sun whilst it’s out. Thanks Jacqui!

I have recently been invited to become an International Mentor for business women under the guidance of the Cherie Blair Foundation.

It’s an honour to be allowed to be involved in such a worthwhile charity.

Now as a mentor, whether to an international mentee or a hypnotherapy client, you will never find me telling anyone what to do. The person you choose to be your mentor should encourage you to reach your own goal, guiding you through the journey but never directing it.

It really doesn’t matter what job you do or where you are in life’s journey. Sometimes a mentor can encourage you to find your own direction again. If it’s good enough for Richard Branson……

ACTION FOR DEAFNESS

Action for Deafness Founded by a group of Deaf and hard of hearing people, Action for Deafness is celebrating 20 years of delivering exemplary services to Deaf and hard of hearing people, this year.

Core funding was secured from West Sussex County Council in April 1994. Twenty years later, the organisation has expanded and now provides a comprehensive range of services for Deaf and hard of hearing people including NHS Audiology services, lip reading classes, Deaf awareness training, sign language classes and an advocacy service. The services are available from two large Resource Centres in Haywards Heath and Worthing which also have a full range of assistive listening devices available for demonstration and sale. The charitable organisation also operates from outreach clinics around West Sussex. Last year alone Action for Deafness saw over 13,000 people for audiology appointments and serviced over 17,000 hearing aids at its drop in clinics.

Action for Deafness is a qualified provider of NHS adult rehabilitation audiology services and was the first provider to gain UKAS accreditation for its audiology facilities.

18 - ACTION FOR DEAFNESS EDITORIAL

It now has six audiology centres across the County. State of the art equipment is used for testing hearing and fitting hearing aids and on going support is always available at any of our centres.

Action for Deafness has a team of dedicated volunteers who run the outreach clinics and can provide home visits to those who are house bound. More than ten million people in the UK have a hearing loss and this number is expected to grow in the coming years so there is much work to be done.

The organisation has already expanded further this year, adding more audiology rooms in Haywards Heath and Worthing. Patient satisfaction is high with 98% of patients saying they would recommend the service to a friend.

To celebrate 20 years of service provision the charity hopes to raise ÂŁ20,000 from fundraising events throughout the year.

Roast Fillet of Salmon on a Pea and Spinach Risotto with Basil Pesto.

This simple dish is easy, can be ready in minutes, and is tasty too!

To roast the salmon:

Salmon Fillets 1 Lemon Salt & Pepper A drizzle of Olive Oil

For the risotto:

1 onion, ½ a leek 1 clove of garlic 1 bag of spinach A cup of garden peas 1 carrot 1 small handful of Arborio rice per person 1 Knorr fish or chicken stock cube A glass of white wine

Method Pre heat your oven to 200oc Finely chop all the vegetables for the risotto and sweat them off in a pan nice and gently stirring often. After 3 or 4 minutes add the rice and white wine, reduce the wine until it has nearly gone then only just cover the rice with stock.

Season your fish with the salt, pepper and lemon juice, drizzle with olive oil. Place it on a baking tray skin side up and then pop it in the oven! Keep an eye on it, you want a crispy skin but not over cooked.

Keep the risotto simmering, keep stirring it and adding stock until the rice tastes cooked but not too soft.

For the Pesto put everything in the blender and blitz it into a paste.

That’s it, plate up and enjoy a quick, easy, cheap and tasty meal!

Wonderful Windows They keep in the warmth and keep out prying eyes, but window treatments are much more than a purely practical addition to a room, says Katherine Sorrell Curtains – where to start The cheapest and most subtle option for hanging curtains is undoubtedly a plastic or metal track. Double tracks can be used to hang both nets and thicker curtains neatly, while triple tracks allow you to use flat panels, perhaps of different fabrics, which can be pulled back and forwards in different combinations depending on the effect you want or how much light you wish to allow in.

The more decorative alternative is a curtain pole – perhaps in see-through acrylic, slender stainless steel or pale-painted wood – and with pretty finials on the ends.

On narrow windows or dormers, portiere (or swing-arm) rods are an alternative to fixed poles, while for a modern effect you could use tension wire, fixed taut within the window opening.

Curtains – fabric and style Whether you prefer minimal panels or swathes of fabric, it is best to take into account the architecture and size of the room, and of the windows, before opting for a particular curtain style. Grander curtains tend to suit larger, period rooms, while simple curtains are often best suited to modern properties. The way in which a curtain hangs is determined by its heading, usually created by a tape which is sewn onto the back of the curtain and pulled to form gentle gathers, smart pleats or a variety of other shapes. For a less formal look, however, there are plenty of alternatives. Tab- and tie-tops are often found on ready-made curtains, though they can be fiddly to draw. Curtains can also be hung from a deep hem which is simply slid

over a pole, from large eyelets punched in the top (this looks great hung from a tension wire), from clips (magnetic ones are easy to use) or even just from hooks.

Curtains can be made from practically any fabric, depending on your budget. The heavier the fabric, the better it will hold a fold, though very heavy fabrics will be too bulky for smaller windows. Very light fabrics will tend to look floppy unless supported by a lining. Lining is, in fact, always a good idea, as it will not only help the fabric hang neatly, but also protect it from fading, dirt and condensation. Thermal linings help retain heat, and can be as effective as double glazing, while blackout lining also blocks out light and some noise.

Keeping Pests at Bay the Natural Way

More and more people have become concerned about using chemicals in the garden, with some gardeners having used chemicals rarely, if at all, for years. Perhaps you are concerned about wildlife and conservation, or using pesticides on plants that children or pets might play near, or that you intend to eat.

Other outdoor pests which can be controlled include leather jackets and chafer grubs and there is even a control to send ants off in the other direction – wonderful if you like to lie on the lawn or enjoy meals in your garden without being nipped!

I garden organically and use biological controls regularly. If your conservatory is also a place where you relax or enjoy a Greener gardening is not difficult, it is just drink or a meal, it is especially important different. But the great thing is that you can relax in the knowledge that you’re not jeopardising any wildlife and that, in many cases, the biological control becomes self-perpetuating as the ‘critters’ you have bought breed and spread. Now that’s what I call useful.

The Rise of the Urban Fox As a retired Gamekeeper of some 40 years I have noticed that in the last 2 years or so I have had many phone calls from people who have a serious problem with foxes in gardens.

These calls usually follow householders losing chickens, fowl or pet rabbits to attacks by foxes.

Generally these foxes have taken up residence close by, under sheds or decking, sometimes having been encouraged by being fed household scraps.

Apart from being a menace, foxes carry a range of diseases which can affect the health of our pet dogs and children.

Sarcoptic Mange is caused by mites and is highly contagious. It results in extreme irritation and loss of fur and left untreated can prove fatal.

Mange can be passed to dogs from foxes through leaving fur and mites on outbuildings, sheds and posts where they have rubbed their bodies because of the intense itchiness of the infected skin.

If the infected dog then sleeps on beds or furniture, or plays with toddlers or small children, there will be a heightened risk of transmission.

Fortunately scabies in humans is self-limiting, in that although the mite can burrow under the skin and cause itching, it cannot complete its life cycle on humans and will die within a few weeks.

Toxocariasis is caused by a parasitic roundworm, toxocara canis. Infected animals pass microscopic eggs in their faeces.

Toddlers and babies learning to crawl are most at risk of being infected as they have a habit of putting their hands in their mouths or playing with toys which may have come into contact with infected faeces. If they are swallowed these eggs release larvae into the intestine, which can remain in the body until they die up to several years later.

It is important to note that as well as clearing up and disposing of fox faeces, it is just as imperative to clear up and dispose of cat and dog faeces as they can also be carriers of this disease.

Weil’s disease (Leptospirosis) - Foxes and rats are also susceptible to Weil’s disease. This is a potentially life threatening condition and can be passed on to domestic pets and humans via contact with their urine.
