Hello and Welcome to our November issue Well the nights are drawing in rapidly now as we enter Winter (hopefully everyone remembered to put their clocks back one hour on the 25th!) and before we know it Christmas will be upon us!

Before that though, we have Remembrance Sunday on November 8th and there are services of remembrance in many of the local villages which will be all the more poignant this year, it being the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII. It seems fitting too that over that weekend there will be Bonfire night celebrations, but wouldn’t it be lovely to also think that those fireworks were in remembrance and thanks to all of those who have given their lives or been injured in their service to our country?

With that in mind, our fabulous front cover photo this month has been kindly supplied by East Grinstead Camera Club member, Gillian Lloyd (www.gillianlloydphotography.co.uk) We thought it absolutely fitting for our cover this month!

id you know that the Royal British Legion supports 9.5 million members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, Reservists, veterans and their families, all year round in the UK? This means that £1.4m each week is needed to continue helping those in need.

One of the most important ways that the Royal British Legion raises these vital funds is through the Poppy Appeal, which runs from late October up until Remembrance Day on 11th November.

Last year, our local Sussex branches, raised almost £1.3 million. One group who no doubt, helped with this huge total is the hard-working Forest Row group, who are preparing for a very busy month of events.

Starting on Saturday 31st October, at 2pm, there will be a recital in Holy Trinity Church, with music from Claire Watkins and Gareth Dafydd Morris. “The afternoon slot has been extremely popular in recent years, so we are hoping for a good audience again,” Simon Morris, Chairman of Forest Row’s RBL says.

On Saturday 7th November, also known as ‘Poppy Day’, the group will be hosting their annual coffee morning in the Peter Griffits Hall from 10am – 12pm, where there will be cake and a produce stall.

All are welcome to pop in for a cuppa and a chat and support the appeal in the process!

Trustees Needed A

re you yet to tick getting involved with a charity off your 2015 bucket list?

While the Forest Row RBL won’t be doing a door-to-door collection again this year, local residents can pick up their poppies in shops and outlets, throughout the village and also during two street collections on Saturday 31st October and Saturday 7th November.

Let’s hope they can raise even more funds this year!

Remembrance Services Sunday 8th November - The Church of St Peter and St Paul Lingfield, 9:30am. There is also an ecumenical service being held at the memorial by the village pond at 10:45am where the two minute silence will be observed and wreaths will be laid.

Remember, Remember… It’s beginning to look to be safe this Bonfire night! a lot like Christmas…

W N ith Bonfire Night, just around the corner (5th November), we chatted to Sarah Jayne Smith from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (who attended 133 bonfire and firework related incidents, last year) for their top tips to keep your family fireworks event fun and not frightening:

ow there’s just six weeks to go until Santa arrives, the festive spirit is well and truly spreading through our region, with fayres, carol concerts and some truly magical events, all starting to take place; including annual favourites such as Ashurst Wood’s Christmas Market and East Grinstead’s Christmas Family Festival.

Bonfires

Christmas Market

• Make sure your bonfire is built away from shed, fences and trees.

• Don’t have a bonfire in windy conditions – this increases the chance of a fire spreading out of control.

• Be careful with what you are burning. Do not burn aerosols, tyres, canisters or anything that contains foam or paint; these can produce toxic fumes or explode!

Likewise, when starting your fire, don’t use petrol or paraffin to get it going. It can quickly become out of control.

• Don’t leave your bonfire unattended at any time.

Make sure that the fire is fully extinguished when you are finished.

Now in its sixth year; Ashurst Wood’s yuletide market returns on Friday 27th November, between 2-6pm in the village’s centre. The event was first organised to bring local organisations together and also give elderly residents (who perhaps were unable, due to health and lack of transport reasons, to leave the village) the opportunity to socialise and do a spot of Christmas shopping. However, now, the market welcomes many visitors from Ashurst Wood and further a-field and is supported by a team of four, who work hard to ensure it all comes together – no mean feat when so many community groups are involved!

Fireworks • Buy only fireworks marked BS 7114 and keep them in a closed box.

• Make sure to follow the instructions on each firework, lighting them at arm’s length (using a taper).

• Stand back! Never go back to a lit firework – it could still explode, even if it hasn’t gone off!

• Never throw fireworks or put them in your pocket.

• Do not give sparklers to children under five. When lighting them, do one at a time and wear gloves.

• Keep pets indoors.

• Stay in full control if you’re lighting fireworks.

Avoiding alcohol is the safest option!

“The firework season is traditionally a busy time of year for the fire service, so we are calling for people to help prevent emergencies by attending, wherever possible, a properly organised community bonfire and firework event,” Sarah adds. “The fireworks set off will be more spectacular than those people use in their garden and they are much safer.”

Just a few community organised events taking place this month, include: Sunday 1st November – Fireworks Festival, Tulleys Farm, Turners Hill. Doors open at 5pm, fireworks start from 7pm.

Saturday 7th November - Fireworks Display, Lingfield Park.

Gates open at 5pm. Advance tickets are £5.00 per adult, £2.50 for under 18’s and under 5’s get in free!

So, who will be involved this year?

“The local pre-school always have a fabulous table full of homemade chutneys and jams as well as hampers and gingerbread houses,” assistant parish clerk, Rebecca Roberts, told us. “St Dunstan’s Church provide mulled wine and mince pies in the cafe. The Youth Club and the local Brownies and Rainbows Group also run stalls, while the football club normally feed everyone with a barbeque!”

“The majority of the craft stalls are run by local residents and the primary school children sing carols around the Christmas tree, which has always been generously donated by Graham Keenor.”

“I enjoy seeing the children queue up to see Father Christmas in the grotto and to me, it does feel like a really nice way to kick off the festive season,” Rebecca explained, when we asked her what she liked most about the Christmas Market. “The event has always been very well attended and everyone seems to enjoy it. I particularly like the fact that most of the stallholders enjoy this event and ask to come back year after year!”

Christmas Family Festival Looking ahead to next month; on Sunday 6th December, East Grinstead’s London Road will once again become a festive hub of activity with the Christmas Family Festival.

“The Christmas Family Festival is a chance to pick up some interesting and unusual gifts from the French market, craft and charity stalls that spill out on to the London Road,” Dawn Spalding, Town Promotions Officer, says.

“There is entertainment suitable for all the family and of course Father Christmas always makes a special visit. It’s a fantastic way to kick start your Christmas. See you there!”

ere at RH Uncovered, we’re big believers in supporting local businesses, by spending our money in the region – we’re sure you are too.

And what better time to do it than at Christmas?

Just one way we can shop locally this Christmas is by buying handmade, one-of-a-kind gifts, created by local crafts people, at events like the Keep It Local event, taking place on Sunday 15th November at The Llama Park, in Forest Row. The event, which promotes handmade crafts and creations from Kent, Surrey and Sussex, is organised

by East Grinstead’s Anne Marriner and her daughter, Sally, both keen crafters.

“We live in East Grinstead and are very proud of the craftsmanship and art in the local area,” jewellery maker Anne told us. “Forest Row and the surrounding villages offer us a keen and knowledgeable customer base who are always interested in our crafters as people as well as their products...and we love to talk!”

“The Llama Park at Wych Cross specifically gives us the convenience of a great show space, easy access, free parking and a relaxed, rural ambience which draws visitors from all over the South of England. The proximity of the beautiful Ashdown Forest is just the icing on the cake.”

Between 10am-4pm, visitors can peruse the plethora of stalls (from cards to cushions and candles, to soap, stained glass and shoulder bags), chat to their makers and indulge in a delicious festive favourite or two, from the park’s tea room.

“We define ‘local’ as being from Kent, Surrey and Sussex and perhaps spilling over into south London,” Anne continues. “We make every effort to prevent clashes of product at our events. It’s boring for the visitors and disappointing for the stallholders.

To achieve this goal, our primary focus is on selecting an excellent range of crafters and products.

Visitors are never charged an entry fee.”

“If you want a free, fun day out, an unpressurised stroll to see high quality, good value and a HUGE variety of locally made and produced goods give the Keep it Local events a try!

You won’t see any “tat”!”

Parking, along with entry to the craft show, tea room and park shop is all free, so put the 15th November in your diary and start writing that Christmas to-buy list…

November, a time for reflection N

ovember is a time for reflection and remembrance and this year will be no exception. East Grinstead will come together once again on Sunday 8th to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. There will be a parade from King Street along London Road to the High Street War Memorial where there will be a service and two minute silence at 11am. It is also a poignant time to remember others we have lost during the year and of course we will particularly remember Don Cooper who so movingly read the names of the East Grinstead soldiers lost during the First World War at the ceremony last year.

There are other events going on in the town including a free exhibition at the town’s museum celebrating one hundred years of the Women’s Institute ‘Not just jam & Jerusalem’ until 13th December. Standen National Trust has an exhibition revealing the genius of Philip Webb,

the architect and designer and there will be a ‘Keep it Local’ Craft Fair at the Llama Park for those looking for that extra special Christmas Gift.

Fighting the Flu and Combating Colds Y our throat is sore, you can’t breathe through your nose and the only thing you want to do is watch TV all day under a duvet. But is it a cold or the flu?

A cold:

• Symptoms come on gradually • You feel worse on days 1-2, and usually better in a week • It doesn’t often cause a temperature or it’s brief and mild (not above 38oC) • Your nose tends to be painful, irritated and red • You will feel unwell, but not overwhelmingly tired • Sometimes you may also suffer from eye irritation, ear pressure or earache, mild headache and mild muscle pain.

The flu:

• Symptoms come on very rapidly • You usually feel worse after 2 or 3 days in, but improve after 5 or 6 days • You may have a temperature of 38oC or above, which comes on suddenly and can make you sweat, or give you ‘the chills’ • Your cough tends to be dry and chesty • Headaches are very common; muscles and joints may ache badly • You may develop diarrhoea • You may have difficulty sleeping, although you feel very tired.

Both are highly contagious infections caused by viruses and there are only two ways to combat them, avoiding contact and boosting your immune system.

Avoiding Contact

Think how many surfaces you touch; door handles, stair rails, taps, keypads when we enter our PIN. Now consider how many people have touched them before you.

• Clean high-contact surfaces regularly and thoroughly • Clean your hands regularly and thoroughly, especially after touching your nose or mouth • Don’t share cutlery or cups • Cold and flu sufferers need their own hand towel or disposable paper towels • Use tissues; throwing them away immediately prevents virus-laden droplets escaping into the air.

Boosting your immune system

If you have a medical condition which can make flu more serious, or are over 65, pregnant or a carer, you should be offered the flu vaccine every autumn. There are also many foods and supplements that claim to help.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

There is no evidence that it prevents colds; but a regular daily dose may reduce how long your infection lasts and its severity.

Zinc

Zinc appears to lessen symptoms and speed up recovery, if taken from the start. Sources: wheat germ, eggs, seafood.

Garlic

Only one study has shown it prevents a cold or flu; once you’re infected, there’s no proof garlic helps. Leave for 20 minutes after peeling and chopping to activate its immune boosting enzymes.

Echinacea

A variety of preparations have been trialled with differing results. Some trials show that Echinacea takers are 30% less likely to develop a cold but there’s little evidence it helps once you’re ill.

Glutathione and bioflavonoid

These help to maintain a healthy immune system, although there’s no cold or flu fighting evidence yet. Glutathione sources: watermelon, broccoli, cabbage. Bioflavonoid sources: cherries, green peppers, red onions.

Selenium

Low levels of selenium have been linked to developing more severe flu, so maintain healthy levels. Sources: fish, nuts, mushrooms.

Saline (salt water)

Saline drops and sprays can reduce congestion and remove virus and bacteria particles.

Do I need to see my GP?

Usually, over the counter painkillers and decongestants plus plenty of rest and fluids will be all you need. But do see your GP if: • Symptoms last more than a week, or become much worse: very high temperature, severe headache, shortness of breath, coughing up blood or chest pain • You develop symptoms not typical of flu, such as a rash • You have a medical condition that is making your flu worse.

When Should My Child Learn Another Language?

Over the last few years, there’s been a lot of discussion about the benefits of children learning more than one language – but what are these benefits and are they worthwhile?

With half of the world’s population estimated to speak two to three different languages per day, it’s easy to see that being bilingual is becoming popular, not only with students taking gap years, or those working overseas, but with young children whose parents are recognising the long term benefits associated with knowing more than one language.

Brain Stimulation Learning a second language is believed to not only activate the verbal and communicative part of the brain, but also the areas associated with reasoning, thinking and numeracy. This is thought to give a child more stimulation, and ultimately, an ability to be able to excel academically.

Increases Cognitive Based Problem Solving Each day, throughout our lives, problem solving skills are needed to be able to make decisions – be it what to have for lunch or something more complex.

Being bilingual is reported to improve cognitive based problem solving, leading to more mental flexibility and creativity.

Improves Career Prospects While the majority of the population seems to speak English, in today’s day world, doing business with people from all across the globe is the norm. It is estimated that learning a language, especially for those working in sales, marketing or technical support could add 10-15% to salaries, compared to those that speak just one language.

Culturally Aware Children who learn another language become, naturally, more aware about different cultures, it’s also thought.

This can have great benefits emotionally on a child, allowing them to confidently connect more with others; from family members who live abroad to a friend they’ve made on holiday.

A winter of

content

W

ith summer but a distant memory, the last, last-cut, of the grass in the garden done and the joyous task of going to, and returning from, your day job in the dark, it can mean only one thing; winter is coming. Yay. As well as preparing yourself for the inevitability that all local roads will go to pot with the mere mention of the word ‘snow’, you should really be giving your car the once-over and making sure that it’s ready for whatever winter will bring. Below are the key things you should be casting your eyes over. But, if you don’t have the time, or inclination, most garages worth their salt will carry out the following for free.

Antifreeze

Sounds obvious, but there are plenty of cars out there that don’t have enough coolant in their system. This should be regularly checked and topped up with the correct type of anti-freeze if required. Your garage can check and tell you if the mixture is right and it’s offering the right level of protection.

Battery

During the winter months, batteries become the most common cause for a car not to start. Once they get to five years old, they can sometimes struggle to turn the engine over for long before giving up. Get your garage to test the battery now and, if necessary, get it replaced before it lets you down.

Screen Wash

This needs to be around 50% concentrate during the winter to stop it freezing, plus it’s worth making sure that what goes in is of good quality. You’d be surprised at how quickly you can get through screen wash during the winter.

Tyres

Whilst the legal limit is 1.6mm, you really want at least 3mm of tread on your tires for winter motoring.

Better still, consider a switch to winter tyres. These are specifically designed to work in lower temperatures, and actually do. Either way, check your pressures every two weeks.

Lights

Check all of your lights regularly, and also give them a good clean so that you can see and also so that you can be seen. It’s worth purchasing a bulb pack to carry around – just in case.

Locks and door seals

If you are still using a key to get into your car, rather than a push of a button, it’s worth giving the inside of your door locks a squirt with some WD-40 to help stop them freezing. You can also smear a thin layer of Vaseline or polish on the rubber door seals to stop them freezing shut.

As well as the above, it’s good practice to make sure you’ve always got at least quarter of a tank of fuel in the car. Also that there is a rug or similar in the boot, a couple of bits of carpet or cardboard to stick under the wheels should you get stuck in the snow, a warm reflective jacket, a torch that works, extra screen wash, some de-icer, some snacks, and even a tow rope. You’re better off being prepared than not, especially as the roads seem to grind to a halt every time it so much as threatens to snow…

Textures for interiors

The way a space feels is just as important as the way it looks. Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell reveals how an imaginative use of different surfaces can make an impact in your home.

C

olours and patterns may be the first things you notice when you walk into a room, but spend any time in it and the textures become increasingly important.

Not only is the right surface in the right area a functional necessity, but an appreciation of texture also enables us to relate to our surroundings in a direct and sensual way, making us feel comfortably and securely at home. Textures, in short, bring a room to life and make a house a home.

Underpinning every design scheme, textures relate to just about every aspect of a room, from size and lighting to colour schemes and style. Consider this aspect of room design as layering one texture with another (floor, walls, upholstery and window treatments are the basics), then adding touches of one or two more (cushions, lamps, vases, rugs and so on). At first the concept may sound challenging, but it will soon come entirely naturally.

Start with key areas – upholstery or loose covers in a fabric that’s neither so shiny and slippery that you slide off it the moment you sit down, nor so rough that it’s uncomfortable and snags instantly.

Curtains that draw easily, worktops that are tough and durable, floorboards that can be cleaned easily.

If you wanted to bring out the cosiness of a small bedroom, say, you could combine a fluff y rug, mattpainted walls, velvet curtains and chintzy quilts.

Or, to emphasise a bright and airy living room, the main features might be varnished floorboards, glossy white woodwork, sheer curtains and glass or chrome lamp bases. The aim is to achieve pleasing

contrasts rather than clashes, so avoid too many unusual, eye-catching textures in one space.

Texture has an important part to play in the overall style of a room. Modern rooms tend to feature harder, shinier surfaces, whereas a vintage or ethnic look is more rustic and varied in texture.

You only have to think of the contrast between a contemporary room that features lots of stainless steel, chrome and mirror, with a more nostalgic room that contains quilts, knitting, embroidery and lace, to understand how important texture is in setting a scene.

Using understated colour schemes and simple patterns allows textures to speak for themselves.

This is where a palette of neutrals comes to the fore – just think of the beautiful, natural hues of sisal, shell, stone or wicker. A dash of brightness may add a focal point, but the subtlety is in the surfaces themselves. Lastly, remember that good lighting shows off textures to their best advantage.

Try to pick out interesting features and highlight them with uplighters, spotlights or angled lamps placed appropriately.

Once you have grasped the basic principles of using texture, you can incorporate all sorts of different elements: distressed or varnished wood, woven willow, worn stone, foxed mirror, distressed leather, fake fur, buttons, raffia and crochet, to name but a few. Textural possibilities are endless and, with just a little effort, you can achieve a look that is individual, intriguing and truly remarkable.

Ground Cover

Ground cover plantings are a wonderful way to create gorgeous carpets of colour in your garden, whatever its size and wherever it’s located. But what’s so special about ground cover growing, when is it most useful and when should you start?

T

he initial few months will take some effort, but once growing well, most ground cover planting needs little maintenance except perhaps a very occasional trim, and some food and water in drier weather.

Make sure the plants are kept just moist at the roots until they’re established and feed occasionally.

By choosing varieties of plants which are recommended for use as ground cover you’ll be unlikely to have to do much if any pruning.

It has a superbly smothering effect on the weeds, killing weedlings and deterring further weeds from appearing. The denser the ground cover planting, the better the effect.

So what should you choose to grow?

Foliage that is attractive and interesting makes a wonderful ground cover planting and if you wish you can add a few more flamboyant flowering plants to the mixture too. By using plants with interestingly shaped leaves or variegated leaves your leafy planting will look even better.
