Forest Row Festival
S
tarting with a humble bike ride in 2001 and evolving into a community festival in 2005, the Forest Row Festival has grown over the years and is always a favourite annual event with those living in the village and beyond! To uncover all the goings-on for the 10th Forest Row Festival taking place between 18th – 20th September, we spoke to Isabelle Clinton the Events Organiser, from the eleven-strong volunteer festival team: What can we expect to find at this year’s event? Well, first of all, the fantastic atmosphere of a huge, laid back party full of friends old and new, and the chance to see or take part in things we love - be it music, browsing, eating, dancing, taking a writing workshop, watching a performance, doing the bike ride, smiling in the sun…or enjoying a local artisan beer in the Beerfest! As ever, it’s a great opportunity to experience our amazing local talents. There’s always so much going on - can you share just a few highlights? On the music front, Friday night will be dedicated for our young people, and free to all. Saturday has an amazing line up of crowd pleasers with Kangaroo Moon, Caravan Band, Swamptown Boys, and the return of Funkee Junkee. Sunday will have a more bluesy, folky, jazzy feel, with Beerfest, Poetry open mic, grown-up storytelling, children’s activities, silent movie, workshops, orchestras on the green, the fabulous market….and a fantastic youth dance and music show finale at Michael Hall theatre. Take your pick!
What are you personally looking forward to the most? I am looking forward to seeing lots of happy people, those who perform or put on an event, and those who come to enjoy them! This is what I enjoy most: creating something which takes a life of its own and belong to the amazing community that is Forest Row - be it creative, talented people, or those who come to attend - where each person can feel they belong. You’ll be celebrating International Peace Day can you tell us any specific plans? Our Interfaith Ministers will be holding a special celebration on Sunday 10am in the community centre to remind us of the true spirit of the day and so that all can have a really joyful day with friends all around. More will be revealed nearer the time! “Treat yourself and come! Your life will be changed forever after! And leave the car at home…” See the full programme of events by visiting: www.forestrowfestival.org.uk. Photos by Julian Temblett-Wood

A Fond Farewell To Simon Kerr
ourism officer and man in the know, Simon Kerr has had his finger firmly on the pulse of all things East Grinstead for the last eighteen years. Before he stepped down from his fast-paced role in July, we caught up with him to talk about his love for the town and hear about his retirement plans. Starting his career working behind the scenes on fashion shows in London, during the Swinging Sixties, Simon has had a very varied career, but just how did he become a tourism officer for the town, just a stone’s throw away from where he was born? “At the time, I was in between jobs and had for the first time in my life been able to spend some time visiting houses and gardens that surround us in this part of the world and I was overwhelmed at the richness of it all.
So, when this job was advertised it seemed like a match made in heaven!” he explained. After almost two decades working on the busy tourist desk in East Grinstead Library, Simon has provided information to local visitors, residents and press about the town’s events and has now decided to retire to spend more time with his family – including his six grandchildren! When asked what he has enjoyed most about his role, the East Grinstead enthusiast told us: “Meeting so many people from all over the world, some who wanted to know more about East Grinstead, and others frustrated that they had got trapped in our famous one way system and just wanted to escape!” “Also, of course, I sit at a desk in a public place and get to meet so many local people on a very regular basis, who, in effect, become part of your own extended family. This job has enabled me to find new skills that were perhaps always there, like writing and photography that are now so much a part of my life. Although it’s always somewhat of a jolt when I see something I’ve written or a photograph, perhaps in a magazine. I scratch my head sometimes and wonder how I managed that!” “Also talks that I regularly give and guided walks as well as occasional appearances on local TV and radio have all given me a platform to polish up my own act – performing for an audience is something I very much enjoy – hopefully they do too!” Working for so long and spending so much time in the town, of course, we had to ask Simon if he could tell us just one thing he loved most about it… “I drive in to East Grinstead on one of the roads on Ashdown Forest that sits high up on a ridge so you get a view of the town silhouetted against the skyline,” Simon smiles. “It’s a sight that never fails to impress!” Congratulations on your retirement Simon!
Autumn Leaves a Jazz Event at The Garth
T
he Garth, a stunning Grade II listed building in Lingfield will be opening its doors this September, for a very special seasonal fundraising event.
Normally only open to the public under the National Gardens Scheme, during the summer – which this year raised £1,325.70 for the NGS’s nine charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Help the Hospices and Parkinson’s UK and an astonishing £377.96 in cake and tea sales, for St Catherine’s Hospice, The Garth will play host to the aptly named Autumn Leaves jazz afternoon. The event hopes to raise further funds for the hospice, whilst also giving us local residents the opportunity to enjoy musical entertainment and see The Garth in full September bloom, amongst its fields of striking orange lilies. Taking place on Sunday 20th September, between 2-5:30pm, the family-friendly fundraiser will feature favourite toe-tapping tunes from all eras, including All of Me, Summertime and of course the jazz classic; Autumn Leaves, all played by fusion band, Momentum. “We want people of all ages, to come along and enjoy fantastic music, whilst raising money for a local charity,” David and Lana, owners of the historic house and its breathtaking nine acres, told us. Tickets cost £10.00 per adult, while children under 16 go free! Get the date in your diary and we’ll see you there! The Garth, Newchapel Road, Lingfield, Surrey. RH7 6BJ.
Tee Off For Charity T
he quote; “we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give,” usually attributed to Sir Winston Churchill, has certainly inspired the hardworking East Grinstead Meridian Rotary Club, who have raised over £90,000 for local causes – through just one of their annual events! Over seventeen years, the popular charity golf days have raised almost £100,000 for local and international charities. This year’s event, taking place on Thursday 10th September at Lingfield Park Gold Club, hopes to add to that astonishing total and raise funds for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance, as well as other club charities. “This popular event is regularly attended by many local residents, who return each year to enjoy a very relaxed day of golf, fellowship, fun and renewing of old acquaintances, whilst supporting worthwhile and deserving charities,” the group’s marketing, PR and communications officer, Steven Kirupai says. “The cost of entry is £60 per player (£240 per team of 4) to include a bacon roll and coffee prior to the start, 18 holes of golf followed by a 2 course meal and prize-giving - we already have several teams entered but at the moment, there is space for a few more!” “Come and play golf and have a fun day, raising money for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.”To enter, contact David Roberts by calling: 01342 832329 or emailing: coachmans@talktalk.net.

Looking for something to do? T
hen why not volunteer? Whether you’re looking to socialise, now the kids are heading back to school or you’re hoping to improve your skill set or perhaps you just want to give something back to the community – whatever your reason; there’s never been a better time to tick volunteering off that bucket list…
Each month 15.2 million people in the UK volunteer, while 23.1 million spare their time to benefit their communities, once a year, according to a recent Community Life Survey. Just one local organisation that helps volunteers find such placements is Horsham and Mid Sussex Voluntary Action, known as HaMSVA – through chatting with someone interested in volunteering their time, knowledge and experience, the team can place a potential volunteer in a role where they can thrive and also benefit the lives of others.
“Volunteering with a local charity or community group will help you make new friends, use an existing skill or learn a new one, do something rewarding with your time and help make the community a better place to live and work,” Sue Edgson, Volunteering Coordinator for HaMSVA says. Jane Howard, who enjoys volunteering for both Standen and the Felbridge Luncheon Club told us: “I started volunteering this year and I only wish I’d done it earlier. I thoroughly enjoy the different types of work I do and I get a great deal of satisfaction from seeing what I have achieved. I will always try to fit volunteering into my week to help organisations that need my help and I feel that I get a good deal of appreciation back from them all.” If you would like to get involved in volunteering and don’t know where to start, contact Sue Edgson, Volunteering Co-ordinator with HaMSVA on: 01444 258102 or email: volunteering@hamsva.org.uk.

Silver Celebrations
S
eptember is an exciting month for Lingfield’s Silver Band as not only are the longstanding group gearing up for a concert on Saturday 26th September, but their musical director will be celebrating twenty-five years at the helm too. Visitors to the concert, which will be held at St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Lingfield, from 7:30pm can expect to hear a varied repertoire of marches, waltzes and overtures – the perfect live soundtrack for a Saturday night. The concert will also mark the group’s (which started over one hundred years ago) musical director, Roy Fuller’s, silver anniversary, by presenting him with a cup, commemorating his time with the band. “Roy has been involved for a long time and prior to becoming musical director, played at important concerts as a guest,” Julie Scrace from Lingfield Silver Band says, about the Dormansland resident.

“He was previously involved with Edenbridge town band, both as a player and musical director.” “Roy was approached twenty-five years ago to conduct the band as the previous musical director had moved away. He had no idea that the job would last so long! There will be a cup presented to mark Roy’s twenty-five years and will be presented at the concert.” The group also welcome new members and young players to join their main and youth band practises, which take place on Thursday evenings in the band room behind the Greyhound Inn, Plaistow Street, Lingfield. If you are interested in joining this great local group, call Julie on: 01342 833400. Prevention is better than the cure I
n the motor trade you hear a lot of different expressions, many of which are far too vulgar to repeat in print. However, there are the odd few that are quite poignant and even, dare I say it, useful. One that isn’t used enough these days though is “prevention is better than the cure”.
If we take a misty-eyed look back in time to the middle to late part of the 20th century, owning a car was still something of a luxury. It wasn’t something that everyone could afford and, in the grand scheme of things, still quite a new and novel thing. Many say it was a simpler time too. There were no computers, there were only three channels on the black and white TV, hair was longer and clothes were stranger. Things were made differently too. Rather than meticulous robotics putting things together in an airtight chamber, it might have once been done by a bloke called Dave wearing a flat-cap, with a half-smoked ‘roly’ hanging out of his mouth. He’d have no doubt used a hammer, and at least three different swear words as part of the process too. As such, if you wanted things to last, they needed looking after a bit more. Take the motor car, for example, if you wanted it to stay reliable, you’d need to be getting it serviced at least twice a year. As time has marched on, cars might have got more expensive, but manufacturers make many hundreds of thousands more of them, the process by which they are built is a lot better and the materials used, (in most instances), are a lot higher quality. The net result of this is vehicle manufacturers extending their ‘recommended service intervals’ further and further apart. It’s all well and good that engine oils are a lot better quality and that an interval of over 15,000 miles between changes is okay, but a lot can happen to a car in that time. If it wasn’t for the annual MOT test (which is only really a basic inspection of the car and by no means a full certificate of health) there would be some very dangerous cars on the road. Not only that, it’s not unusual to find yourself hit with a larger than expected bill, as it’s been 18,000 miles since someone last looked at the car and things have worn out under there. Our roads aren’t exactly billiard table smooth, are they!?
14
/RHUncovered
We are seeing a lot more people driving their cars until they break, these days, which is a real shame. This is partly due to those ever-expanding service schedules and partly due to the fact that owning a car today isn’t the privilege that it once was. It’s almost a consumable in today’s modern society. There are over double the amount of cars on the roads in the UK now, compared to when my grandfather set up Morley Auto Services in 1966 and most of them seem to be on the M25 when I want to use it. Going back to my original point of prevention being better than the cure, here is a prime example: Vehicles fitted with a timing belt require this to be changed at regular intervals. It’s what you might call a service item, it does wear out. In some cases it’s a time consuming, and therefore costly, job. Let us say that all-in it costs £300 to do the job on Mr Smith’s car. Mr Smith is unsure whether he wants the job doing as it seems like a lot of money to spend when there are no obvious faults with the car, so Mr Smith leaves it. Two weeks later, Mr Smith’s timing belt snaps and the engine’s valves and pistons (previously kept apart by this belt) now become very intimate. What would have been a £300 job is now a £1500 engine re-build. Obviously this is a worst-case scenario, but it’s a perfect example of when prevention is better than the cure. The same can be said of a set of brake pads, something that would be checked when the wheels come off as part of a routine service. A £70 brake pad change suddenly becomes a £200 set of discs and pads when the pads are left to wear out to the extent that they damage the disc. It boils down to the fact that just like the human body, if you look after it, you won’t be at the doctors every two weeks. If you act on early warning signs, there will hopefully be no nasty surprises later down the line. So do yourself, your car, and your bank balance a favour, and get it looked at properly at least once a year.

Questions To Ask When Choosing Your Child’s School

or many parents, deciding which school their children should go to – be it for primary, secondary, state-run or independent, can be one of the hardest choices that they will encounter; after all each child is different and of course, we all want the best possible start for the brightest future. As well as perusing the glossy brochures, chatting with fellow parents and going along to open days – we’ve put together a definitive list of questions to ask prospective schools, which will hopefully make that all-important decision easier.

Managing the Menopause A
re you suddenly finding yourself feeling hotter than the Gobi Desert? You know the feeling, as you settle down for a night’s sleep you want to throw the duvet out the window? I’m talking about the signs that the menopause may be starting.
What can Doctors help you with during these changes within your body? The most important thing to say is, don’t put off going and speaking to your GP. They can help guide you. They have many links to other organisations who can help with this transition your body is going through.
What are possible signs and symptoms that it may has started?
Doctors have a wide array of medications available including HRT, which research has shown can help to restore the level of the hormone, oestrogen. Many other medications are available, which may help with the hot flushes, nausea or other changes in mood.
• Hot flushes or night sweats • Feeling your heart racing • Difficulty in sleeping, either going to or staying asleep • Reduced libido • Mood changes, such as feeling tired, irritable, depressed or anxious • Concentration loss or poor memory
Are there any natural alternatives available? Exercise has been shown not only to help with some of the symptoms but also by exercising you help protect your body from heart disease and osteoporosis. Always seek advice from a fitness or medical professional before commencing any exercise. Relaxation techniques or selfhypnosis may also help. Learning how to manage the anxious thoughts around these changes can give you back a feeling of being in control. Acupuncture, Aromatherapy and other alternative remedies are widely available too. It’s always important to get yourself checked out by a GP if concerned, and then find a course of treatments or combination of things that work for you. Our bodies are all different, so if one doesn’t work, try an alternative. Don’t give up. I know there are some extremely knowledgeable professionals in this area who are on hand to help and give advice.

There are many ways to help you through this time of changes, always speak to someone. It’s important to know you are not alone. Becky Wells, www.beckywells.com Personal Development Hypnotherapist www.payitforwarduk.net
What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a natural state of heightened awareness that occurs within all of us. It allows us to open our minds to beneficial suggestions and allows the client to use their imagination to make positive changes. A brief way to describe a feeling similar to hypnosis is that moment you’ve been watching TV and not heard a word that’s been said, even though you’ve been staring straight at the screen. Alternatively it’s the car journey where you wonder how you got to a certain place. Your mind is on auto-pilot and must have been in control, otherwise there would probably have been an accident. What can hypnotherapy help with? • Agoraphobia • Anxiety • Blushing • Confidence Building • Depression • Fears and Phobias • Gambling • Guilt • Habits and Compulsions • IBS • Insecurity • Insomnia • Memory Recall • Nail biting • Nervousness • Pain Control • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder • Panic Attacks • Public Speaking • Smoking • Stress Management • Timidity • Trauma • Weight Problems • Worry

9 ways to create a new room in your house Just had a baby? Started working from home? Run out of storage? Then you need to stretch your home.
1. Add a conservatory Pros: Adds extra living space and brings the garden into your home. Relatively inexpensive. Cons: A poorly built conservatory can be too hot in summer, freezing cold in winter and full of condensation. Takes space from your garden. Regulations: Many conservatories are exempt from planning permission and building regulations, but check with your local planning department first.
2. Build an extension
3. Convert the loft
Pros: Adding a rear extension to a kitchen can be a great way to create a multi-functional family room. Filling in the side return in a typical Victorian terrace is popular. It may be possible to add a second storey for a new bedroom or bathroom on the first floor, too.
Pros: Create a bedroom (perhaps with a bathroom), a home office or playroom, without taking space from the garden.
Cons: Reduces garden size. Unsympathetic extensions feel like an add-on. Regulations:Can often be done without planning permission, depending on size and height. Check your permitted development rights with your local council’s planning department. You’ll also need building regulations approval and, if you’re semi-detached or in a terrace, party wall consent from neighbours. Visit www.planningportal.gov.uk for more information.
Cons: Not every loft has the headroom or enough useable space. More difficult and expensive if your roof isn’t traditionally built. Regulations: Can often be done without planning permission, depending on size and height. Check your permitted development rights with your local council’s planning department. You’ll also need building regulations approval and, if you’re semi-detached or in a terrace, party wall consent from neighbours. Visit www.planningportal.gov.uk for more information.
4. Convert the cellar Pros: Turn a cellar into family living space, a useful utility area, a home office or even a self-contained annexe, without altering the outside of your home.
Regulations: If you just want to turn an existing cellar into a normal room, it’s classed as a change of use and doesn’t need planning permission. But if you lower the floor or extend, you’re likely to need permission, so check with your local authority. And Cons: Often more expensive, per square metre, than you’ll need party wall consent from any adjoining other ways of creating extra space. Can be difficult to neighbours. In both cases you must comply with Building Regulations.gov.uk for more information. get enough headroom and light into the new room.

01342 718348
5. Build a room in the garden Pros: The building work will hardly bother you.
Cons: Not suitable for small gardens. Could look like a shed, security is an issue, and if not properly insulated it will be too cold to use in winter. Regulations : A simple garden room may be exempt from planning permission and Building Regulations, but if it’s laid on permanent foundations and connected to mains power, water and sewerage, you’ll need both.
6. Put in an ensuite
7. Build on top of your garage
Cons: Installing an ensuite at the expense of a bedroom could knock your property’s value.
Cons: Foundations may not be strong enough, so the garage will have to be underpinned.
Regulations: Planning permission isn’t usually needed, but Building Regulations approval is.
Regulations: You’ll need planning permission and Building Regulations.
Pros: Loved by buyers. Can be fitted into quite a small space.
Pros: A first floor extension on top loses no garden space and is often relatively easy.
8. Convert your understairs space 9. Convert your garage Pros: Turns a poorly used area into a valuable extra room – perfect for a ground-floor loo, an extra shower room or a study area. Cons: You’ll have to find extra space to store that under-stairs stuff. If putting in a loo or bathroom, ventilation and connecting to drainage may be a problem. Regulations: Building Regulations approval is necessary if you’re installing a bathroom.
Pros: It’s a relatively straightforward job to turn it into a valuable indoor space. Cons: Foundations may need strengthening. Avoid if you live in an area where parking is at a premium. Regulations: Planning permission is not usually required, but Building Regulations approval is.

A Public Apology, from Tim Burberry Plumbing and Heating! Dear Harri, Just a quick message to apologise for missing your birthday this year which was unacceptable and very selfish of me! A Public Thank You... Harri, I would like to take this opportunity to make amends for this dreadful oversight by wishing you a very happy 6th anniversary of working at Tim Burberry Plumbing and Heating! 6 years ago you started working for me as a shy and young apprentice and I have watched you mature and grow into a fine young man with exceptional work skills. Harri, it is an absolute pleasure to work with you and long may it continue, Thank you,

Unwelcome Visitors
Ask a dictionary the definition of a weed and you’ll read that it’s ‘a plant growing in the wrong place’. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multi-pronged attack strategy.
Off with their Heads Whatever the weed problem, it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed. Make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to procreate. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth. Stop Stowaways When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those hidden stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). Spaghetti roots Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and far-reaching underground stems or roots. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots into little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process. Lawn Louts Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best, albeit slow, methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisy-grubber tool. Deep Rooted Problems Some weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run.

Laying Carpet For large areas, try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fluffy side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fibres, not synthetic or else you’ll be left with it in the soil, and for allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet. Time it Right Some weeds such as the purple flowered oxalis spread by forming tiny ‘bulbils’ or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out now, the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then. Hoe, hoe, hoe An old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. They’re a great way to weed your garden, especially if it’s largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly. Careful what you Compost Only compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any flowering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems.
