Hello everyone and welcome to our February issue!

The period after Chrismas is a busy time for everyone, getting the house back together after Christmas, taking down the decorations and clearing out the cupboards of any left-over festive goodies, not to mention finding space for all those presents!

I don’t know about you, but whenever I take my Christmas tree and decorations down, for a few weeks after the room seems somewhat bare, and it’s usually around the end of January I get the itch to decorate, or re-arrange my living space!

Local Pilot Launches Children’s Books:

Meet Pilot Ollie and Pilot Polly!

F

or many of us (especially in our younger years), the idea of being a pilot is very exciting indeed – can you imagine flying a plane and jetting off on a far flung adventure?

The Pilot Ollie and Pilot Polly series, are all based on the illustrated character’s “amazing adventures” around the world and aim to not only educate, but also inspire children to travel.

One local pilot, Rob Johnson, who grew up in Crawley Down and now lives in Piltdown, Uckfield, has just self-published his very own children’s books; all inspired by the questions his own children have asked him, about his trips.

“The book idea is based on the stories I used to tell my two children when I came back from a trip,” the British Airways Airbus A320 Captain, explained. “They always wanted to know where I’d been, what I’d seen and what I’d had for dinner. I wrote a few of the stories down but never thought of publishing them.”

“One evening over a glass of wine or two, I was talking to my neighbour about the stories.

He loved the idea and persuaded me to publish them. The conventional route of using agents and publishing houses was too expensive so we decided to self-publish. We started the company Plane Characters Limited and the rest is history.”

“My aim with the books is to take the children on a journey, share the experiences I have been lucky enough to have had, inspire them to fly and travel and subtly educate them about pilots, weather, flags, foods and famous places,” Rob, who is also a governor at Fletching Primary School, where his two children are pupils, says.

“Having done numerous school visits I love watching their faces light up when I talk with them about flying and travel.”

The beautifully illustrated books are focused on those aged eight years and below, with hidden objects to find and use of high frequency words that reception through to year two children will be able to read and that those in year three and year four, will be able to read, unaided.

Rob currently has three books; Pilot Ollie and Pilot Polly Come Fly With Us, Pilot Polly’s Amazing Adventures Madrid and Pilot Ollie’s Amazing Adventures Rome, all on sale on Amazon, as well as in Uckfield’s Sussex Stationers, The Bookshop in East Grinstead and The Mint House Shop in Hurstpierpoint.

He has just finished Pilot Polly’s Amazing Adventures New York too, with plenty more stories in the pipeline. The company are also creating personalised story books incorporating your choice of child’s name into the story – a great Christmas gift idea!

Of course, one question we just had to pose to the experienced pilot was: which does he find scarier; flying a plane or hearing no holds barred feedback from young readers?

“This Friday I am doing a talk in a school,” Rob told us, when we spoke to him back in October.

“Over a couple of hours I will have an audience of 240 kids. This scares me way more than anything to do with flying. In fact there is nothing about flying that scares me. I even enjoy a bit of turbulence!”

Having It For Harry 1 in every 2,500 babies born in the UK this year will be born with cystic fibrosis – a genetic condition, with no current cure. To highlight the life-limiting disease and raise funds for other sufferers and their families, local dad, James Robson is embarking on a 600 mile cycle in his eight year old son Harry’s name.

On 28th April, James and his team will leave Charlie’s Deli in Crawley to cycle to Paris and back in just six days, with the aim of raising £2,000 to be split between the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Cystic Fibrosis Dream Holidays.

“We want to help children with cystic fibrosis have a good quality of life and be able to go and have a much needed break from all the stresses and troubles of their day to day routines, they deserve it,” the dad of three explains. “We will be hoping to raise a few thousand pounds, but I know me and I’m sure we will get that a lot higher!”

Cystic fibrosis sufferers have a defective gene that causes a thick, build-up of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs.

Team

The mucus, in the lungs, clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure.

Whilst, in the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.

“This can clearly make day to day living very difficult. Harry, who is a student at Meath Green Junior School in Horley, has had two hospital admissions in the last year alone, totalling four weeks in hospital.

“The way I see it is, my Harry and all the others that live with cystic fibrosis are challenged every day!

This is nothing compared to what they go through.”

James said, when we asked him why he decided to take on the 600 mile cycle.

“I can’t take cystic fibrosis away from him but I can raise money and awareness so that the people with the magic medicine can!”

This isn’t the first time James and his family and friends have set themselves a cystic fibrosis fundraising challenge, with James and wife Zoe (Harry’s mum) creating and organising the annual Worth Way Cycle, from Maidenbower, Crawley, and Zoe recently walking 100km and raising over £3,000!

“We as a family want to be able to do what we can, not just for Harry but all the other cystic fibrosis fighters out there,” the fundraising dad adds.

“We have decided to split our donations between the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Cystic Fibrosis Dream Holidays so that there will be opportunities for the little ones and their grown-ups to create memories on family holidays. Time is the best gift you can give anyone - memories are forever.”

By Royal Appointment…

C

rawley resident Glen Jones has had a varied life working in the Royal Navy (and serving in the first Gulf War), then joining Surrey’s Fire Service and later becoming a police officer, working in armed response.

With years of combined service and three commendations for bravery and silver and gold jubilee medals, firmly under his belt, Glen decided to make the move to get more involved with one of his lifetime passions: rugby.

It was his latest venture that resulted in the father-of-two being invited to attend a reception at Buckingham Palace, held by the Queen.

The rugby-enthusiast has worked hard to encourage 16-24 year olds, especially, to keep playing the sport. As well as being appointed the Director of Rugby at Haywards Heath Rugby Football Club (the club’s first and only full time position!), last year- a role which sees him getting involved with local schools, Glen also works for premiership club Harlequins as a Community Coach, is a coach at Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham and a Coach Educator for Rugby Football Union.

In late 2015, Glen was invited to Buckingham Palace for his extensive work within youth rugby, something, he told us, came as a bit of a surprise: “I was told about my invite, firstly over the phone but then this really posh invite arrived in the mail.

I’ve kept it to frame because I doubt I will ever get an invite from the Queen to come for tea ever again!” he laughs.

“The evening included all the teams who had made the quarter finals of the Rugby World Cup, tournament officials and a ‘who’s who’ of the rugby world,” Glen explains.

“HM The Queen hosted with Prince Phillip, Princess Anne and Prince Harry in attendance. I was invited as a thank you for the work I have been involved in with the Rugby Football Union, particularly keeping the 16 - 24 year old age bracket playing the game.”

“I got to say ‘Good evening’ to the Queen, but it was Princess Anne who I got to speak with at great length. She was amazing, down to earth and clearly knows her rugby!”

As part of his new role at Haywards Heath RFC, Glen visits schools within the surrounding areas to give taster sessions, for both boys and girls. “The idea then is for anyone in these schools to come to Heath to take their rugby further,” he says.

The club, which saw numbers sadly decline a few years ago, is now very much on the rise again – thanks to Glen, the board and their hardworking volunteers and boasts the largest youth section in Mid-Sussex. With someone as clearly passionate as Glen, on board, we’re sure this will only continue!

any of us know of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), but did you know that there are hundreds of groups, around the country who encourage those interested in birds and wildlife, to get together and help give nature a home?

Our local group (RSPB Crawley and Horsham) was founded back in 1978 and over the years has become a hub for nature-lovers, through their interesting talks, mid-week walks and exciting outings.

“Our indoor meetings consist of excellent illustrated digital talks covering locations renowned for their wide-ranging variety of birds and animals, giving the audience a taste of both exotic locations and venues closer to home,” Group Leader, Andrea Saxton said.

“Our mid-week walks centre around reserves and countryside near to Crawley and Horsham and give our members the opportunity to see and learn about our wonderful native and visiting wildlife.

Local residents are welcome to join us on our walks and attend any of our indoor meetings.”

Meeting in The Friary Hall, Crawley, on the third Wednesday evening of each month (September – April), the group’s sixty members also enjoy raising funds for the RSPB’s many conservation schemes through sales and raffles.

This year, will see members – old and new alike – be entertained by a packed programme of events!

“For 2016 we already have a full and varied programme and will be having a four-day group outing to Norfolk in October,” Andrea adds.

“We try to organise a group outing once a year and regularly attract twelve to sixteen members who enjoy visiting reserves further afield and the companionship this generates over the three-night stay in a hotel.”

“Our local RSPB group provides an opportunity for everyone to enjoy our wonderful wildlife in the company of others who share in their love of nature. Come along and join the group and see for yourself!”

Family Values A

s a rule I try not to take too much notice of what I see and read on the internet, but recently I saw something that caught my eye.

It was a sign that read: When you use a local or family business, you aren’t helping a chairman buy their third holiday home. You’re helping a little girl get ballet lessons, a little boy get his first pair of football boots, a student to pay uni fees or a mum and dad to put food on the table. Understandably, this struck a chord with me.

Morley Auto Services is this year celebrating fifty years of being family run and, well, being the third generation of Morley to be involved in the business, I’m actually very proud. Especially given the way the world seems to be these days, with large companies seemingly swallowing up towns and villages, not to mention the impact of online shopping.

In 1988, the business had outgrown the Oakdene road site and we moved to Linkfield Street, where we remain today. I can say we at this point, because a 7 year old me was there to help with the move. I was already showing a keen interest in cars and spent most Saturdays helping out/getting in the way.

So being a family run company, especially one that has stood the test of time, is something to be proud of and actually, something we should all do more to support.

Whether it’s a local garage, butchers, greengrocers or chemist, all of them need the support of customers in order to carry on.

Granted they probably can’t match the price of the large chains that exist, but more often than not you’ll get better, and more personal, customer service at the smaller firm, the employees won’t be on a bonus and so won’t be trying to save money or cut corners where possible and maybe, just maybe, you’ll get a warm feeling of satisfaction that you’re not putting money into a massive pot that makes the rich at the top of a big firm, even richer.

A bit of steak will be cheaper at a supermarket, but it won’t be as good as the bit butchered in front of you and handed over with some advice on how to get the best results from cooking it, advice that comes from years of experience, not an online training course.

He traded alone from Oakdene Road in Redhill until my dad, Ian Morley, reached school leaving age and decided to follow in my Grandad’s footsteps. My dad served his apprenticeship at Reigate Garage before eventually joining my Grandad in the family business in 1972.

In 1999 my Grandad retired and handed over the reins to my father. It was at this point, two years into my apprenticeship at East Surrey College, that I then joined the company full time.

It is a story that my father and I are immensely proud of. It is also a story that surely must make Morley Auto Services amongst the longest-established family businesses in the Redhill/Reigate area. We are very grateful to each of our customers, past and present, that have been part of our half-century journey. It’s not been easy, but we’re still here, doing what we can to buy my daughter her ballet lessons and my son his football lessons.

So, whether it’s us, another local garage, a butcher’s, a garden centre, or whatever; support the little guys where you can. Once upon a time the local high street was made up by them, now they are a rare sight indeed, and getting rarer. Which, if you ask me, is a real shame.

Professional Beauty Secrets: Revealed By Helen Taylor Ever wondered how models and actresses manage to look so gorgeous all the time?

Well, here’s the low-down on those all important tips and tricks that are used by professionals all over the world.

Clever Contouring Kim Kardashian is known for her flawless make-up look which perfectly accentuates her features and draws attention to her razor-sharp cheekbones.

Skilled in the art of contouring, her make-up artist cleverly uses cosmetics to emphasis particular parts of her face, which creates her striking trademark look.

Here’s how you can get cheekbones which rival Kim’s: Firstly you’ll need to prime your skin. Choose the primer that’s right for you: green toned versions neutralise redness in the skin and mattifying primers eradicate shine. Smooth the product over your entire face, after applying a light moisturiser.

Next, select two foundations in two different shades; the first should be one shade lighter than your natural skin tone and the other one shade darker.

Apply the lighter foundation to the centre of your forehead, bring it down onto the middle of your nose, in a straight line (this will make your nose appear straighter and slimmer), apply under your eyes and to the tops of your cheekbones, then lastly to the centre of your chin.

Sweep the darker shade under your cheekbones, along the outer sides of your nose, either side of the lighter colour, and on your temples and jaw line.

Use a light-reflecting - not a glittery or overly shimmery - highlighter to make certain areas of your face really stand out. Apply the product under the arch of your eyebrows, along the tops of your cheekbones, down the centre of your nose and on your cupid’s bow.

To finish, and to bring the entire look together, dust translucent powder over your entire face and add a touch of colour to the apples of your cheeks using a pink blusher.

Grab a neutral-coloured lip liner and begin lining just outside the coloured part of your lips to create a full effect.

How will you attract more For a small business, making the most of your advertising With 10 years of publishing experience, Matthew Arnold, Managing Director of RH Uncovered, has worked with local businesses of all shapes and sizes.

Here he shares his top tips on how to decide where to advertise your business...

We don’t want you to make a snap decision on advertising with us. Why? Because we care.

For most businesses, advertising in RH Uncovered would be a really smart thing to do, but we’re not going to pretend that it is for every single business.

When deciding how to spend your advertising budget, it’s crucial you consider the three M’s: 1) Who’s your market?

Who is your product or service aimed at?

In other words, who do you RH2 want to buy what you’re selling? Building up a RH7 RH6 clear and detailed picture of who you’re RH19 RH10 targeting is the vital first step before you RH18 decide anything else.

2) What’s your message?

RH16

Once you’ve defined who you want to do business with, you need to understand what you want to SAY to them. What’s your message? You’ll want to communicate who you are and what you do, but it can also be beneficial to communicate why you do what you do too.

3) What’s the best media for your message and market?

Once you’ve got your market and message sorted, then and only then should you be thinking about the media you use to target the right people with your message.

Think about where your target market hang out and what sorts of media they consume; and choose a media that is most likely to get your message in front of them.

Typically we find that the media we offer – our community magazines and websites – is perfect for a large percentage of businesses – that is why we retain over 85%* of all customers each month, and an impressive 93%* of our customers when seasonal adverts are accounted for; but we understand that advertising with us is not for everyone. Let’s break this down. You’re paying the publisher money to do a good job for you and understandably, you’ll be really keen to make sure you’re handing your money over to a reputable business.

4) How do you know the magazine actually gets there?

We don’t want to scaremonger; but the fact of the matter is that there are some magazines that will take your money and not deliver your advertisement. They might not even print the magazine. To combat that risk, it’s a good idea to get proof of print and distribution; so that you can be sure your advert has actually landed.

5) Know your numbers Cost is vital – you need to know how many people will see your advert, and work out the cost per thousand. Some magazines may seem very cheap; but when you break down how many people actually see the ad, you’re paying peanuts and getting monkeys (and not of the financial kind!)

Combatting Half Term Boredom with Imaginative Afternoons As parents, we all know just how important it is to install imaginative and creative play into our child’s lives, with reports suggesting it not only improves social skills, but their understanding and expands their learning too. However with busy lives, this can sometimes be more difficult than it seems.

This half term, ban boredom (and turning to the TV) and instead, get creative – here’s a few ideas to get your imaginative afternoons started:

Get Arty Grab those paints and colouring crayons and let their creativity flow! Make pictures of family members, their favourite activity or go abstract with patterns and colour. To really unleash their imagination, use homemade potato prints or stencils, getting them to help out. After you’ve created your masterpieces, talk through them and let your child explain what they have made – they could just surprise you!

It’s Showtime!

Children love putting on a performance! Encourage them to host their own show with acting, singing, dancing or even magic tricks, turning your living room into their very own theatre. Role play, such as this, lets a child get into character and is a key part of developing their knowledge, allowing them to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and learn through imaginative play.

Make Something Out Of Nothing Go on an adventure through your home to find things you no longer use, or perhaps are throwing out. Whether it’s old mismatching socks, tired t-shirts or even empty toilet rolls, challenge your child to make something out of these items, with a little help from your sewing box and the arts and crafts cupboard! Ask them to tell you about their creation; what’s their name? Where do they live?

What do they eat? This activity is guaranteed to be a great way of spending a few imaginative hours.

Pet Proofing Your Garden T

here’s always a lot to say about small pests such as greenfly, caterpillars, vine-weevil and so forth, but early in the year it’s some of the bigger ‘residents’ which can really drive you around the bend. I’m talking about cats and dogs. What can you do to ensure that you continue to garden happily, successfully and safely, despite the fact the garden is visited by cats and dogs… and without harming these lovely creatures either?

Next door’s cat or others in the neighbourhood are trickier to deal with as unfortunately they do tend to try and do their ‘toileting’ along the edges of their own territory, making your garden a prime target area.

If your cat or a neighbour’s cat is a problem, bear in mind that the more bare soil there is, the more likely that a cat will start to use it as its loo. Ground cover planting is essential and you could always use temporary annual flowers to fill in gaps between longer You may need to consider actively fencing off one part term planting. If you find that these too are scuffed of the garden for your dog, and trying to keep another up shortly after you have planted them, then the best thing to do is cover newly planted areas of bedding area completely dog free. If you have problems with dogs coming in from next door, then it’s essential that with an arch of chicken mesh or with sticks with taut you make repairs to fences. Now is a good time because string tied between them. Obviously this will look a mess but can be removed promptly once the plants there’s relatively little plant foliage to hide holes, gaps have rooted well and started to establish. I have found or loose panels in fencing. Remember that the dog is also likely to be able to squeeze underneath or around that the electronic cat deterrent ‘Cat-Watch’ works very well too. many types of fence, so you may need to use chicken netting or similar. Be your own interior designer Whether you’re planning a room from scratch or freshening up an existing scheme, it can be hard to know where to start.

C

reating a successful space involves a complex blend of practical and aesthetic considerations. As well as the nitty gritty of wiring and plumbing, there’s wallpaper, paint colours and fabric to select, window treatments to decide on, storage to incorporate, furniture to choose and finishing touches to arrange. How can you ensure that you do it correctly?

Never fear: it’s simply a question of taking things step by step, using a straightforward, logical approach. Careful planning is invaluable in helping firm up your ideas, work out your budget and timetable and, above all, avoid expensive mistakes.

First comes space planning. Measure your room accurately and draw a plan to scale on graph paper, marking in windows, doors, fireplaces, fitted cupboards, pipes, radiators, plug sockets, light fittings and so on. Consider the room’s size and shape, and its architectural style. Will they affect the way in which you decorate? Are there special considerations, such as lack of space or light, or an important original feature? At this stage, consider whether it would be helpful to move a wall, pipe or radiator, enlarge a window, hang the door the other way around or add extra plug sockets or light switches. Perhaps you can conceal wiring or pipework, or build in some extra storage? Once you have gone through all the options – consulting a structural engineer if your changes are major ones – you can draw up a final plan.

Next, plan the positions of major items of furniture.

approximate shapes of your furnishings, as if you were looking at them from above, using the same scale as your room plan. Then simply cut them out, place them on your master plan and assess how well they fit in to the space, ensuring that you allow enough activity room between and around them.

Think about who uses the room, when and how.

Move your ‘furniture’ around as necessary and, eventually, the optimum arrangement will become apparent.

To complement the floorplan and ensure that all the decorative elements of a room work together, professional designers create a ‘sample board’: a visual memo of all the different pieces that go towards making up the room.

Before you start, you’ll need to find some images of your proposed furniture, flooring, lighting and accessories, as well as swatches of fabric, wallpaper and paint. Try to keep the samples in proportion to the size they’ll be in real life. You can also include real items (or parts of them) such as tie-backs and trims, rope or timber. Your sample board can be highly representative or more of a suggestion of general colours and styles.

Then, take a large piece of neutral-coloured card as a base, and arrange the images or swatches on it. It helps if you place the samples roughly in accordance with where they will be in the room.

With all the ingredients together, you’ll have a really effective overview of how colours, patterns, shapes and textures work together and can assess the overall effect.
