Hello everyone and welcome to our March issue!

“Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude.” A.A. Milne This lovely quote struck a chord with me when I came to writing my welcome note to this month’s issue. It is true, a huge amount of gratitude actually doesn’t take up much space at all, and as I only have space for a few lines that’s probably just as well!

Of course we are always grateful to each and every one of you that pick up our magazine and read it each month, but especially so if you were one of over a thousand people who picked up one of our recent issues and took the time to complete our Reader Survey.

To be honest with you we have been totally overwhelmed with your kind words and, on the whole, very encouraging feedback! The winners of the M&S vouchers are revealed opposite.

However, I can share with you a quick snippet of news which has come about as a result of the survey. We have already been busy searching for and recruiting a team of “local” journalists to quench your thirst for more community articles (which incidentally came top of the “most wanted” list on our survey) and we’ll introduce you to them next month.

Of course there is a still a long way to go and work to be done. Much effort already goes into our publications, so it’s very rewarding to read all of your comments and to know that our magazine is still very much valued and appreciated.

Vera 99 Appeal On March 20th 2016 the World War II Forces Sweetheart, Dame Vera Lynn, will be celebrating her 99th Birthday. For the past 15 years Dame Vera’s Children’s Charity has supported over 600 children with cerebral palsy and their families. To make this a truly memorable occasion, a special appeal is being launched to encourage individuals, groups and companies to support the charity and ensure many more children will benefit in the future.

The charity supports children like Ruby, who was born prematurely and endured a number of serious setbacks resulting in a diagnosis of four limb cerebral palsy with additional disabilities including epilepsy.

Medical practitioners suggested Ruby would never be able to speak or walk. However, since attending Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity for 3 years and receiving the specialist one-to-one attention she needed, Ruby can now say lots of words and is able to stand and take steps.

The charity has set up a dedicated appeal page on Just Giving and donations can also be made via a text to donate – Text VERA16 £10 to 70070. Anyone wishing to get involved, make a donation and send Dame Vera a birthday message can also contact the fundraising team on 01403 780444 or email info@dvlcc.org.uk A fundraising thermometer will be in the school’s reception to chart the appeal’s progress and regular updates will be featured on the charity’s website and social media sites.

The “Vera 99 Appeal” provides the opportunity to get involved, make a donation and send Dame Vera a personal birthday message. A special book containing the messages will be compiled and presented to Dame Vera on her birthday.

Community Hero: Veronica Ballard , MBE This month we’re highlighting the fantastic achievements of Horley’s Veronica Ballard, who last year was awarded an MBE, by Her Majesty the Queen, for her services to the community.

Veronica, who has lived in Horley since she was a small child, has spent over 45 years being heavily involved with local groups and organisations; including Girl Guiding, Horley Photographic Club and the Local History Society. She was also a teacher at Burstow Primary School for 37 years.

Once she retired, instead of slowing down, Veronica became even more involved in Horley’s busy social scene – volunteering behind the scenes at The Archway Theatre and as an advisor at Horley Citizens Advice Bureau. In 2012, the council acknowledged her commitments with a Horley Town Award.

“Being involved in the community is like another hobby and, of course, you are always learning new skills and meeting people,” the enthusiastic community member explains.

“On retirement, I joined the C.A.B. which really made me appreciate the problems that people have to cope with and it gave me pleasure to see them enabled to do something and in many cases ‘see through the mist’ and understand their options.”

“I also joined the Archway Theatre,” Veronica continues. “Scrubbing and painting scenery can really be fun! We do need more help, so if there are any active retirees who can handle a paintbrush for a few hours a day every 6 weeks, please get in touch!”

It has been nearly a year since the Horley community hero found out that she had been nominated for an MBE – news that understandably, came as a bit of a shock!

“When I received the letter informing me that I had been nominated for an MBE, I thought it was a practical joke! It took me a while to convince myself that it was true and I had to keep quiet for about eight weeks until the Queen’s birthday honours list was published in mid-June.”

“Seeing my name in print made it real,” she says. “However, I felt that I was being honoured on behalf of many other people who do similar community work all over the country. I met a number of people from all over the country who are equally involved in community work when I attended the presentation at Windsor Castle in October.”

Congratulations to Veronica! We’re sure we’ll hear lots more from her over the coming year!

Celebrating 65 Years: Horley Trefoil Guild Horley’s Trefoil Guild (a Guiding group for adults) has recently celebrated turning 65 years young!

Meeting on the second Wednesday of each month at English Martyrs Church Hall, Vicarage Lane, between 7:15 – 9:15pm, this interesting local group of former Guides and Guide enthusiasts support local Guiding and Scouting projects, as well as meeting up for fun and friendship!

In the 1920’s, former Guide members, aged 18 and over, started forming unofficial groups to maintain contact with their old groups. ‘Old Guides’ was formed and then in 1943 the Guide Association bought together the various groups of ‘Old Guides’ and the name ‘Trefoil Guild’ was adopted.

There are now 1,100 Trefoil Guilds running across the UK, with over 20,000 members! As a branch of Girlguiding, groups pledge to support other people; including passing on their skills to Brownies and Guides.

Brownie Guider, Anne Hawksley explains: “We interact with local Rainbow, Brownie and Guide groups helping, as requested, with their discos, open evenings and craft evenings.”

Not only this, but the group take their pledges seriously and also lend a hand within the community through supporting Blackland Farm, organising coffee mornings and taking part in Horley’s annual Christmas Tree Festival. They also hand out water from the water station at Denbies Wine Estate, during marathons.

As well as their community work, this great group enjoy hosting interesting speakers, craft nights, croquet parties, photo competitions and summer BBQ’s too.

“We enjoy fellowship, interesting speakers and activities and through contact with the local Rainbows, Brownies and Guides organisations, we endeavour to help to encourage the spirit of Guiding in Horley!” Anne adds.

Town Council’s responsibilities in the planning process This month I want to talk about the Town Council’s responsibilities in the planning process. We are a statutory consultee which means that we have to be consulted on all planning applications within the town boundaries. These are discussed by the Planning and Development Committee every three weeks. Planning lists are emailed to all members of the committee every week, which gives us an opportunity to view them on line form the Borough’s web site.

At the committee meeting we go through the list of applications and debate their merits in order to decide our recommendation to the Borough Planning Committee. Some take little time such as Tree Preservation Orders which we tend to leave to the expertise of the tree officer, and some of the

smaller extensions such as conservatories which usually generate little discussion.

More complex plans are discussed and if there is not obvious agreement on it, a vote is taken and the majority decision is the recommendation to the Borough. We always try to base our decision on planning law rather than aesthetic considerations, although we do bring these into our decision making.

At the end of the day the final decision is that of the Planning Committee and Department of Reigate and Banstead Council. They do not always agree with us but on the majority of applications there is agreement between the two councils.

LONDON TEMPLE ADVERTORIAL

New Directors at the London Temple Visitors’ Centre in Newchapel

Martin and Jan Lock

Martin & Jan Lock bring a little of "Ship shape and Bristol fashion" and Northern Irish charm to the London Temple Visitors Centre.

They first met in Ireland in November of 1972 where Martin was serving a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

(Frequently referred as the Mormon Church).

During that time Jan completed her mission for the church in London and returned home to Northern Ireland. After finishing his mission and returning home to Bristol he shortly there after returned to Ireland and after a lengthy courtship (six weeks) they both returned to the London Temple to be sealed as husband and wife.

They spent the next forty two years living just North of Bristol in a town called Yate near Chipping Sodbury. During those years they raised six children, developed a home improvement business and served in many church assigments.

You have served at the London Temple before haven't you?

Yes we were privileged to serve as a councillor of the London Temple after we retired from business. In 2010 we accepted a call from the church to fulfill a three year assignment from 2010/2013.

Now just two and a half years after returning from your Temple service to your home town you are back. Why? In June of last year we unexpectedly received a phone call from church headquarters in Salt Lake City Utah. It was during a Skype interview that we accepted an invitation to serve for two years as the Director of the London Temple Visitors Centre.

We were informed that our call came through the 1st Presidency of the church and we feel very privileged and honored to be here.

We share a great love for the people who come to visit the centre and we have a wonderful message of faith, hope, peace and of course our Savior's love.

Can just anyone come to the Visitor's Centre?

Yes anyone and everyone is very welcome. Most of our visitors are from England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland.

We also have people from all areas of Europe, Africa, South America, India, Australia and beyond. It is a very multi cultural environment.

There is also the opportunity to walk around the beautiful grounds of the temple.

All of which will provide you with a cultural and spiritual experience.

What do you want the good people of Surrey and East Sussex to know about the temple?

That the temple is the ultimate expression of our church membership.

It provides instruction and fosters a high ideal of moral values, it helps us to become better citizens and to follow our Savior Jesus Christ. It blesses families and the communities in which we live.

The temple is also where we perform sacred ordinances for both the living and the dead.

What can visitors see and learn What do you hope they will come to understand about at the visitors centre?

The Gatwick Aviation Museum Due to re-open at the end of March, we went behind the scenes at The Gatwick Aviation Museum in Charlwood, with manager Ashley Colella to uncover all about the charity and its impressive collection of ‘golden age’ aircraft:

What is the aim of the museum?

The aim of the museum is to preserve and restore classic aircraft from the ‘golden age’ of aviation. We have a large collection of post war RAF and Royal Navy aircraft and artefacts. We also aim to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers and aviators through practical examples and demonstrations.

How did the museum start?

The collection was originally owned by Peter Vallance who was a very keen collector of aviation artefacts. He spent his life collecting aviation related artefacts and creating the Gatwick Aviation Museum charity.

the charity back in 1999. It has been the aim of the museum to have a purpose built building for a long time. The building is now completed and we have the long task of moving the airframes and making the displays. We have a very large collection of engines to display and associated paraphernalia.

Which aircraft will residents be able to see, once the museum opens?

We have a large collection of aircraft, including: an English Electric Lightning F53 (Saudi Arabian Air Force), which has just undergone a 16 year restoration, a Blackburn Buccaneer S1 (the only ground running S1 in the world), a Hawker Hunter T7, a Harrier GR3, a Sea Vixen TT2, a Venom FB51 (Swiss Air Force), a Meteor T7, a Sea Hawk FB6 and an Avro Shackleton MK3 PH3.

Author JK Rowling reportedly decided to write the first Harry Potter novel after an idea for the story occurred to her when she was travelling on a train from Manchester to London. Following a painful divorce, she completed the book as a struggling single mum on state benefits, becoming a multimillionaire within a staggering five years.

Yusuke Funaki had a good job as an engineer in Tokyo. By chance he saw a performance by the world-famous circus company Cirque du Soleil and was so inspired by the performers that he decided to learn the gymnastic rope-skipping techniques he had seen in the show. After a few years of practice he abandoned engineering and literally ran away to join the circus.

He is still working with Cirque du Soleil as a performer at their Florida base.

The link between these two individuals is their willingness to follow an impulse, taking up new activities that – given their backgrounds and relative inexperience in their chosen fields - were far from guaranteed to result in success.

It takes a certain kind of courage to risk everything in order to follow a dream, especially when we know it might fail.

Most of us, at some stage in our lives, have done things that we have regretted at a later date - a new hairstyle or a tattoo, a weird auction lot that seemed too good to ignore… sometimes our spur-of-the-moment choices seem so out of characterit’s almost as though someone else has taken over our minds.

A study of the brain shows why we feel this way. The emotional mind, based in the limbic system, is separate from the intellectual mind, which is found in the prefrontal cortex. While the primitive, emotional part of our brain makes rapid-fire decisions about things we like, dislike, hate, love, fear or want, the intellectual and more logical mind is geared to making deliberate and rational conclusions at a slightly slower pace. Therefore when you allow your emotional brain - known as the amygdala to guide your actions, you’re likely to end up doing something that your rational self would prefer to avoid.

We tend to associate impulsivity with youth and it’s true that young people are probably more likely to follow their impulses when making key decisions.

In time, however, most people discover how to regulate these urges in order to function as an adult. Mature people tend to suppress their emotional responses, using the knowledge they have acquired, backed up by logic and reason, when considering a set of options.

While no-one would doubt the benefits that knowledge and experience can bring, something is perhaps lost in this process.

Impulse and risk-taking are closely linked with creativity, and there’s a danger that we may ignore the creative impulses that (as J.K. Rowling and Yusuke Funaki discovered) have the power to change the course of our lives.

By middle-age, many of us have ceased to follow our instincts, relying almost exclusively on the tried and trusted methods that we learned in our formative years.

Mixed Results for MOT’s This month’s editorial piece presented me with a small problem. When I started writing it, it was to be about the changes that the DVSA made to their website regarding MOT failures.

However within two days what was originally written has subsequently been changed, meaning that we’re all none the wiser.

Already lost? Read on.

What it now says is that if it fails, you can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid. But they have now made a point of stating that your vehicle still needs to meet the minimum standard of roadworthiness or you can be fined up to £2500, banned from driving and get three penalty points for driving a vehicle that is in a dangerous condition.

So, on the first of February we were all deeply excited about the fact that it appeared that the DVSA had cleared up an area that had historically been greyer than last month’s weather. That area is one we’re often asked about: if my car still has MOT to run, but fails its test, am I allowed to drive it?

In summary, we are actually no better off than we were before this all happened. But it does boil down to common sense. Is the car roadworthy? If it has failed on a bulb and a wiper blade, but still has two weeks to run on last year’s certificate, I’m fairly certain that you aren’t going to get a £2500 fine.

There weren’t really any guidelines, no hard and fast rule, just a fair bit of shoulder shrugging and the application of some common sense.

If it’s failed on a number plate light bulb, it’s a bit less serious than if it’s failed on a bald tyre or the suspension falling off.

Although if it’s failed on the front suspension falling off and the brakes not working, and you decide to drive it around for those final two weeks, not only is it not road worthy, the failure certificate issued to you by the test station is hard evidence that you are aware that it has these defects. Which is obviously frowned upon.

At the start of February, the DVSA had updated its guidelines, warning motorists that they faced prosecution should they drive their car following an MOT failure, even if it’s previous test hadn’t expired. This was good news, not necessarily because of what was said, more that there was finally some clarification on the matter. No longer would we have to use the words “it’s a grey area”.

So, just to be clear, if you take your car for its MOT early, and it fails, providing that it’s nothing major wrong with it the DVSA says that you are okay to drive it. Which is pretty much what we all thought anyway.

Vision is a precious sense to everyone, but the gift of sight is often taken for granted until some deterioration is noticed.

It is not uncommon for people to begin to find that despite never having had to wear spectacles or use contact lenses during their 20’s and 30’s, suddenly in their 40’s or beyond it may become more challenging to read up close or in the distance.

In previous generations this would inevitably have required reading glasses which despite the obvious unpopular signal that we are getting older also creates the endless dilemma of “where have I put my glasses”!

Multifocal lens technology works by providing a continuous enhanced focal range to provide a broader area of clear vision and reduce the need for spectacles. Often people will enquire whether they are suitable for these lenses, and of course this requires a detailed discussion of lifestyle and visual requirements (the optical needs of a Golfer are a lot different to those of a voracious reader), a comprehensive examination of both eyes to confirm that they are healthy and suitable for lens implantation and scanning of both the surface and internal structures of the eye with personalized detailed measurements to calculate the multifocal lens power required .
