T r a n s fe r r in g verses an d e m b r o id e r y lin es ¥ T ran sfer em broidery lines on applique pieces following the instructions for Fusible Applique. To transfer the embroidered words or lines to a background piece, you can lay the background over the v^erse or em broideiy lines and trace with a light fine pencil line (use a mechanical pencil) or a disappearing ink marking pen. Use a light colored marking pencil for dark fabrics. Holding the fabric up to a window, or using a light table, will help you to trace the lines if the fabric is too opaque. You can also transier the lines with w'ashable nonperm anent ti'ansfer paper

Trace all picces o f the design to the paper side of the itisible web. Hint: W hen you have many smali sim ilar pieces to applique, the pieces are numbered. Write the nitmber on each piece and don't peel the paper backing until you're ready to applique. Trace {.he embroiden- lines to all applique pieces.

Cut out the pieces leaving approxim ately 1/4” around the shapes. (vSee figure 1) Hint: I cut the center out o f the fusible web on the larger pieces lea\ing 1/4" around the inside o f the shape. This leaves the applique soft and easy to quilt and embroider.

Iron the fusible web pieces, paper side up. onto the wrong side o f selected fabrics fol­ lowing manufacturers direc­ tions. Let cool. Cut pieces out directly on the tracing lines. (See figure 2) Transfer the embroideiy lines to die front oi the fabric with a light, fine pencil line or marking pen. Fuse the design together. Arrange pieces onto you r quilt block, positioning backgrou nd pieces first, then w ork forward overlapping pieces as shown. Fuse with your

Cut out the piece lea\ing approxim ately 1/4" around the shape and iron the fusible w^eb to a piece o f poster board or hea\y card stock. Cut along traced lines. Use these templates to trace the patterns to the W T o n g side of you r fabrics.

Follow' the general instructions for fusible applique. Fuse the apple stem to block #A. Center the stem and place it 1/2" down from the top edge. See figure 7. Sew the #A block to the top o f the apple unit as shown. Fuse on the apple le a f with one tip at the base o f the stem and the other tip 1/4" down from the top edge. Fold the apple pieces in half along ihe 16 ‘ side. Trace the apple template to the fabric and cut the apple pieces out on the ibid. Cut one apple íroin batting on the loid. Trace the leaf and stem template pieces to the wrong side o f one o f the lea f and stem fabric pieces. Follow the general instructions for fusible applique and fuse the apple swirl to one o f the apple pieces. Finish the edges o f the applique with a hand or machine blanket stiich.

Sew across each end and douTi toward the middle ol the strip, leaving an opening to Lurn in the center. Clip corners, turn and stitch up the opening by top stitching all four sides, close to the edge. Overlap the strip 1/4" and stitch. Sew the button to the ring where the strips overlap.

For the leaf and the stem, place the fabric pieces right sides together and the batting on the back. Sew on the traced line lea\ing an opening to turn. See figure 11. The stem ,is left open at the bottom edge.

Follow the general insti-uctions for fusible applique and fuse on the applique pieces. Position the applique border strips 3/4" in from the edge o f the background block. The strips overlap at the corners. The 9" border strip and the 22” border strip are placed at the left side and top. The 26” border strip and the 7” border strip are placed at the bottom and right side. Use the illustration in figure 12 and the photograph to help with placement o f the applique pieces. Follow the general instructions ibr makinii a template and make the bag top templates. Cut (2) bag top stabilizer pieces Cut. the hang loops from both tea towels. Cut the hem froni one end o f ihe polka dot cream towel and from both ends o f the rose towel. (Leave all o f the other existing towel hems in place.) See figure 13. Place the towels together. maicrJng the fold lines and pin. See figure 14. Sew the towels together on the fold lines to form the oulside pockets as shown.

Pin the tuck pleats on the top edge ol the bag. Find the center fold and make a pleat that m easures 13/8” from the center fold. Make another pleat on the other side o f the center fold. M easure in 2-1 /2" from the outside edge and make a 1-3/8" tuck pleat on the side. Repeat for the other side. Note: I used a towel that m easures approxiniaiely 20” x 28”. 1! your towel is a different measurement, you will liave to adjust your pleats a little. Ju st make sure that alter you have all o f the tuck pleats pinned, the bag top measures 9” across. See figure 16. Baste !.he pleats in place with a 1/4” seam. Sew a button to the cenier seam o f each end ol the bag. Place the other buttons 2-1/2” apart from each other and alternating color. Sew them on only through the cream towel. See figure 14. figure 16

To make the handles. v\ath the w rong side inside, fold the handle strips in h a lf lengthwise and press. Open the strips and fold each edge to the center fold line and press. Tuck the handle interfacing strip next to the cenier fold and under the outside fold. Fold the handle in h a lf again along the first told line and press. {The interfacing is now encased inside o f the handle fabric.) Sew along each edge o f the handle through all layers to secure. Fold the bag in half with right sides together. Pin ihe side seams with the edges o f both towels even. Starting 3" down from the lop edge, sew the side seam on each side o f the bag. See figure 15.

Pin a bag lop stabilizer piece to the w rong side o f a bag top piece, centered and 1/4 from the straight sid%. Make some clips on the cur\’ed side o f the bag top to ease the fabric around the cu n ’e. Don't clip all o f the way to the stabilizer. See figure 17 on the next page. Press the cur\’ed fold line along the cur\-ed edge

Pin two o f the bag top pieces right sides together. Sew them together at each short side. Put the handle inside o f the bag lop against each side and pin with raw edges even. Sew across the straighi top o f the bag lop. ^-atchin<£ the handle ends in the scam. vSee figure 18.

I'u rn the bag top right side out and press. Slip a piece o f stabilizer into eacli bag top through tlie open cun-'ed side. Make sure the stabilizer goes to the side of each seam allowance, ar.d not on top o f it. for a smooth fit. Turn ihe bag right side out.
