LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to issue 3 - The Festive Issue. Finally, we celebrate the wonderful year we’ve had and get ready to close 2017 with a bang! The Festive Issue not only celebrates the spirit of Christmas, but also the new year including: Chinese New Year; Valentine’s Day; and everything else you may celebrate in between. Our fabulous festive cover features the stunning Bleta Gashi, shot by MANUKA’s contributor Ralf Eyertt. We take a sneak peek into the style diary of New York’s stylist, Olga Alarcon’s which also features Regina Joseph, a model, journalist and blogger (also from New York). We uncover the creativity of Laura Popescu, a rising fashion star from Romania; who not only designs, but also works as a model and stylist between Bucharest and Milan. We also get up close and personal with Los Angeles songstress, Leanna Rachel, who now spends most her time in beautiful Bali as a local superstar.

Millennials proved that pink was the color for Fall 2018. But hold on, it appears this pink trend is persisting into winter. From the pale pink described as the ‘millennial pink’ to bright hot pinks: it is crystal clear that injecting a pop of pink into your wintery days is the thang to do.

#POWER OF RED PHOTOGRAPHY RAÚL MUÑOZ @MALACARAPHOTO Without a doubt, the color red was the color of the year. With stars such as Carrie Underwood looking red hot at the Grammys to Kerry Washington showing us ‘chic’ in all red at the PaleyFest; there is no doubt why time and time again, red is the favorite color of the festive season. Red lace will be a big hit during Christmas, while silk slip dresses will continue to be a hot trend through to the Chinese New Year. With so many shades to choose from, you can take your pick from nude reds to deep cherry reds, to take you through to Valentine’s day. Although we are obsessed with red, you don’t have to over-kill it with the reds. Subtlety is very chic so try add a pop of red. It is just as effective for that effortless finish pairing some of your favorite red items or accessories with whatever outfit you want to rock.

INTERVIEW WITH
LAURA POPESCU Who is your fashion icon/inspiration?
My fashion inspiration comes from the people around me and all of my memories. I’m defined by my emotions. I consistently put my memories into every piece of my work and I depend on my childhood memories and my environment. I appreciate Celine, Chloe, Givenchy, Off White and the important people in fashion, such as Edward Enninful, Lotta Volkova, Anna Della Russo, and Steven Meisel. What do you aspire to be once you finish studying?
When I finish my studies, I aspire to develop my creativity and design/sewing skills. Of course, my biggest dream is to work for one of the fashion brands I previously mentioned. What is it that you love most - modeling, designing, or styling?
What I love the most is design because from fifth to twelfth grade I studied sculpture and painting. Then I found the same stuff from sculpture (balance, proportion, shapes, symmetry) and painting (colors, details, contrasts) in fashion.
How long have you been designing?
Since I gained my scholarship at my university about a year and a half ago. How long have you been modeling?
I started just two years ago, so I’m a fresh face in the industry. How long have you been styling?
A year ago, I started to style since I met my partner in crime, Doinel Ungureanu, a talented photographer. We are now a team and we work with different brands in Romania and Milan. Who would you like to work most with?
In fashion design, I would love to work with Ricardo Tisci. For styling, I would love to work with Anna Dello Russo. What is next for you?
Next for me is to develop my styling and design portfolio with my photography partner to create a fusion between them and of course to make my own clothing collection.

“S
itting with Regina at a cafe in SoHo, we were going over things that inspired us, #Girlpower, dream jobs, goals, trends, art and fashion etc. We wanted to put together an outfit that represented these ideas and to embody who we are (women on the go, ready to take the world at any minute). We came out with three essentials for the cold New York winter.
“
Palazzo Pants Palazzo and gaucho pants have been a trend since last year and they’re here to stay. They certainly became an essential in my wardrobe. They are a chic option to uplift your outfit between those heavy winter coats. I love the balance of ‘black and white’. Many people are afraid of white, but I would take advantage of its boldness. With this look, I paired it with a white button up sleeveless shirt and layered it up with a stripe bustier top. The Baker Boy Hat Every cool girl owns this hat! We all have seen this everywhere. It’s perfect for the winter and it comes in many different
materials. It’s the chic way to protect your head from the freezing cold! Regina is wearing a blue Baker Boy Hat from Zara which is a little oversized and gave the outfit a cool boyish vibe. The Statement Earrings Look at these amazing statement sparkly earrings with the oversized star in the center! Shine bright girl! There is no doubt that a statement piece of jewelry can bring an outfit together and elevate it to the next level. The great thing is that there are so many great costume jewelry options out there for any style and within any budget. Read more about Regina Joseph at www.gypsyginablog.wordpress.com
This outfit is super chic with the right amount of edge. It can be dressed up or dressed down. You can still build it up for the winter by adding a turtle neck and a woolen coat. For mild days, you can throw on a leather biker jacket and be effortlessly cool. I would suggest some cool pieces from Uniqlo to bring some heat. Otherwise you can opt for some booties and girl you are ready to rock this city! 74 | manukamag.com

L
os Angeles native and Bali based songstress Leanna Rachel weaves together vocals dripping with emotion, acoustic guitar, guitarlele, and mbira to create ethereal ballads.
Soulful, classic songwriting steeped in folklore, woven into a dreamlike mood, she elicits both authenticity and mystery, fragility and strength. Leanna has performed at The Viper Room, Hotel Cafe and The Whiskey in Los Angeles, and has performed at clubs and festivals in New York, Sweden, Australia (Woodford Folk Festival), Bali, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, alongside José González, Little Dragon, Bonobo and Angus & Julia Stone.
@MANUKAMAG
Earlier in your life, you lived in Los Angeles, so tell us how it was like growing up in California? @LEANNA RACHEL I actually grew up in a small town about an hour south of Los Angeles, called Tustin. It was a nice place to grow up, close to the beach and the mountains. Very suburban. I thought life was all about going to school, to university, then getting a job in an office and living in a cookie-cutter house, and that was extremely depressing to me. It wasn’t until I started venturing north to Long Beach and Los Angeles that I discovered life outside of the box. @MANUKAMAG
What brought you to live in
Bali?
@LEANNA RACHEL I first came to Bali to play at
the Bali Spirit Festival in 2010 with my previous band, Love in the Circus. It was my first trip to Asia, and I came with no expectations or preconceived notions of Bali. To make a long, long story short, I fell in love with Bali immediately. As soon as I stepped off the plane and into the open-air airport (it was different back then), I felt home. It was a new feeling that I didn’t even know existed. Maybe it was that mixture of Balinese incense, clove cigarettes, warm friendly faces and beautiful offerings of colorful flowers everywhere. Whatever it was, I just felt this knowing in the core of my being.
After that initial trip, I would work my butt off day in and day out in order to get back to Bali as often as possible, which ended up being about once a year. Every time I made it back to Bali, I felt home. I felt allowed to be myself - people were always asking, “When’s your next show?” (Back in Los Angeles, I was running my own business as a massage therapist, and didn’t have a lot of time for music). Living in Bali was a distant dream for a long time, but I knew deep inside that it would happen someday. I finally made that dream a reality when I met my Indonesian manager two years ago and we made a plan for the tour of my debut solo album in Indonesia in May of 2016. I came on a one-way ticket, ready to stay for as long as Indonesia would have me. A year and a half later, I’m still living and loving life in Indonesia. @MANUKAMAG Your song “Coffee” was not
only your first song in both English and Bahasa Indonesia but also recently featured as part of the soundtrack for the film Filosofi Kopi 2. Describe the emotions you felt as soon as you watched the movie and heard your song play? @LEANNA RACHEL That was a truly incredible feeling. First of all, about a week before the movie came out, I was feeling quite down and was doubting my decision to move to Bali. I didn’t know if my career was going anywhere, and I
manukamag.com | 87
MUSIC|INTERVIEW
was missing my family back in California badly. I pushed through those negative emotions and decided to fly out to Jakarta to attend the Premiere Gala of the movie. As the stars mingled on the red carpet, I played a few songs on the rooftop of the double-decker VW bus that is used as a touring coffee shop in the movie. After that, I had the opportunity to watch “Filosofi Kopi 2” for the first time, and I was completely blown away. The movie was beautifully shot, the acting was emotionally compelling, and the soundtrack was perfect. I felt absolutely honored to be a part of it. Then, during one of the most beautiful scenes, shot in Toraja, Sulawesi, my song came on. My whole body was tingling. I felt weightless. Tears welled up and I gave thanks for everything that had led me to that moment, even those moments of depression and questioning... without them, I don’t think I could fully appreciate the pure joy that comes from moments such as this. @MANUKAMAG
Being from Los Angeles, how have you settled in Bali, Indonesia? @LEANNA RACHEL Honestly, I just feel more comfortable in Bali. I think the humidity has something to do with it - I’m an island girl at my core. The Eastern mentality is more in line with my outlook on life, and Balinese traditional culture is absolutely beautiful. There are definitely challenges, as there are in any place in the world, but there’s something about Bali, something about Indonesia, that feels like the most exciting version of “normal life” that I can possibly imagine, at least for the time being. Henry Rollins calls this kind of thing “hyper reality,” and that’s exactly how it feels to me. Additionally, there are a lot of foreigners that come to Bali to start businesses, so you can find a wide variety of food, craft and fashion. I do miss LA for it’s authentic Mexican street tacos, world-class art galleries, vintage shopping, and ridiculously diverse music scene... it’s a trade off. @MANUKAMAG
Describe your life in Bali? What would be a typical day in the life of Leanna Rachel?

@LEANNA RACHEL
I definitely couldn’t tell you what a “typical day” is like, because I’ve worked pretty hard to make my life different every day. I thrive in adventure and changing environments frequently. I’m touring throughout Indonesia much of the time, but when I do get a few days off in between to rest in Bali, I do exactly that. My tour schedule gets kind of crazy sometimes with late nights (shows) and extremely early mornings (flights), and sometimes I only get a couple hours of sleep for multiple nights in a row. So when I get home to Bali, I usually spend that first day back in bed all day: sleeping in, slowly getting up to make some breakfast and to play guitar, brewing cinnamon clove tea or golden milk... if I have a few days off, I’m writing a new song, going out to see some live music, or taking my motorbike East or North to explore Bali. @MANUKAMAG
What projects are you currently
working on?
@LEANNA RACHEL
I am currently brainstorming ideas with my producer in Jakarta in preparation to record my second album. This one will be produced and recorded in Indonesia, and I’m super excited to work with Fendy Rizk, the incredible contrabass player I’ve been performing with in Bali for the past year and a half. In December, I plan to write and release my first self-produced EP as part of an artist residency at the beautiful Bloo Lagoon Eco Resort in East Bali, in collaboration with American visual artist Adam de Boer. Lots of exciting things on the horizon! @MANUKAMAG
Where do you draw inspiration from when writing your music/songs? @LEANNA RACHEL Love, in all it’s forms. Romantic love becomes a vehicle for universal lessons of self-love. If I ever feel “stuck”, all I need to do is spend time alone in nature, and let it flow from there. @MANUKAMAG
What has been your biggest career highlight so far? @LEANNA RACHEL That’s a tough one to answer. There are so many moments that have

You’ve performed at The Viper Room, Hotel Cafe and The Whiskey in Los Angeles, and have performed at clubs and festivals in New York, Sweden, Australia (Woodford Folk Festival), Bali, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, alongside José González, Little Dragon, Bonobo and Angus and Julia Stone. Tell us about this experience of touring the world and living your dreams? @LEANNA RACHEL Life is such a great adventure - sometimes it’s hard to believe some of the places I end up, and the incredible people that I meet. I always do my best to stay grateful for every opportunity that comes my way, and try not to take it for granted, to really breathe into each moment and feel the energy that comes along with these experiences, even when it gets a little crazy and sometimes stressful. @MANUKAMAG
Will you be touring internationally anytime soon? @LEANNA RACHEL At the moment, I am in Los Angeles, California for about 3 weeks. I’ll have 2 shows here, a little tour up the Central Coast of California, as well as a couple shows in the Midwest. I am currently planning a DIY tour of Europe next year with my good friend who’s also living in Bali, an Australian musician named Athron. I’d love to tour in Australia sometime soon as well! @MANUKAMAG
Aside from being a successful
international musician, you’re also a fashion lover addicted to vintage clothing, so tell us about your favorite ‘vintage’ dress passed down to you by your great grand-mother?

been absolutely incredible! But the first thing that comes to my mind is my song, “Coffee” being placed in the Indonesian movie “Filosofi Kopi 2”. From that placement, something felt definitively different. I’ve reached a wider audience, and it feels nice to receive notes from listeners who find peace and joy in my music, which is the whole reason I make it.

A few years ago, I found a few very special pieces stored away in my grandmother’s house. One of them was a gorgeous necklace, presumably from Thailand. It was originally my great-grandmother’s, Mimi, who traveled quite a bit internationally in the 60s and 70s. I also found a dress that belonged to my other great-grandmother, Callie, that I wear often for performances. I have no way of knowing for sure, but it looks like a woodblock print based on Indian paisley motifs - there’s no label as it was custom made for her. It’s gorgeous, and it fits me almost perfectly. It’s such a beautiful feeling to be able to wear some of my ancestors’ beloved treasures from around the world. @MANUKAMAG
Who are your favorite fashion designers and brands and why? @LEANNA RACHEL I recently had a blast on a photoshoot with an incredible Indonesian designer, Sonny Muchlison, in Toraja, Sulawesi. He studied Anthropology, and has made collections based on 34 different provinces in Indonesia using the local fabrics and also painting his own batik inspired by the nature and local traditions. I modeled his Toraja collection in front of some intense historical sites there. It was an incredible experience! I also really love Kucoon, from Los Angeles. Their clothes are sexy and comfortable. @MANUKAMAG
Which brands/labels do you want to work or collaborate with in future? @LEANNA RACHEL I’ve recently become obsessed with an Indonesian brand called Purana.

Let’s talk beauty – what are your beauty tips and secrets? How do you stay so beautiful with flawless and glowing skin? @LEANNA RACHEL Well, my mother raised me to wash my face only in gentle upstrokes to avoid getting wrinkles, to only use natural products, and to always moisturize. My friend Wamuhu taught me about a little known beauty secret that I swear by now. Ready for this? Rub a slice of lemon on your underarm, and you don’t have to use deodorant anymore! It kills the odor-causing bacteria. Seriously, amazing. @MANUKAMAG What
beauty products do you recommend and swear by? @LEANNA RACHEL Lemon, Argan Oil, Olive Oil, Earth Science Clarifying Facial Wash, Earth Science Apricot Gentle Facial Scrub, Nivea Moisture Lip Care, and Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation. @MANUKAMAG
List your top 5 destinations and why? List 5 destinations you’d love to visit someday? @LEANNA RACHEL Bali has to be on the top of the list, of course. It’s a great place to live (even though it’s getting super crowded these days) because there is a nice blend of city culture, there are people from all over the world, lots of friends from my hometown that come to visit, AND you can drive for 2 hours and be in a beautiful Balinese village surrounded by waterfalls. I love Amsterdam because of it’s charming canals and friendly people, Corsica for it’s cobblestone streets, clear blue water and delicious food, Los Angeles for it’s vibrant underground music scene, and Fayetteville, Arkansas for it’s humble and

You have already achieved so much in your life and have had huge international success, so what’s next for Leanna Rachel? @LEANNA RACHEL I wouldn’t say I’ve had huge international success, but I hope that is the case someday. For now, I would like to continue building my career in Indonesia, while hopping over to Los Angeles and Europe from time to time, slowly building up a name for myself in those places, learning more about this beautiful world and the people in it.
