DUALITY by TINA NIKOLOVSKI
Beyond our physical form lies a sense of curiosity, intertwined with our deepest desires, trauma and a fear of the unknown. Within each of us is a form of duality - the curated self which we put on show to the world, and the deeper self that is fighting to come to the light. We cannot fight against our own darkness and ‘win’ because the darkness will always lie within us, but we can realize that we ARE the light, and that light is consciousness.

WHAT FRAGRANCE
MEANS TO ME BY SHANNON MCNAMARA HUSTON
Growing up, having a signature scent always felt like the sophisticated thing to do. Isn’t that silly of a little girl to think of such concepts? I suppose that was the inner style maven clawing its way out of my awkward pubescent body. It seemed like such a daunting task, finding the perfect perfume. As a teenager, my selection was always a bit edgier, albeit far too provocative for my age. As time went on and I grew into womanhood, I began to understand who I truly was as an individual, which was not the type of person who wore the sex-on-a-stick selections of my perplexing youth. This gradual revelation helped me to find an ideal fragrance that will truly stand the test of time. It also opened my eyes to the realization that the perfume which best represented my overall aura had been right in front of me all along. You see, as a young girl, I would run barefoot through the hayfields of my family’s farm. A true southerner, my grandparents and my nuclear family both lived on the same homestead. As I would daydream my way from one country home to the other, I would stumble into my grandfather’s old barn. Inside, I would create stories from the vast hidden treasures. As you can imagine, there were the rusted tractors and plows I had seen the men in my family use on warm summer nights, but there was much more than that.

I found devastatingly breathtaking paintings (later to be restored) created by my Aunt Marguerite that had been hidden away since World War II, hung by vintage-style nails on faded wood beams. A creative nomad of her time, illustrations of exposed breasts were shunned by her peers, resulting in such masterpieces left to rot away for nearly a century. Old toys that should have been donated years ago were haphazardly tucked away in a corner. And, my favorite, vials of rose perfume scattered everywhere from a time when my grandfather purchased an old store. You see, the contents of the store were irrelevant to him, rather the value of the physical property itself was his reasoning for such an acquisition. This left me with my own enchanted fantasy realm within the dilapidated walls of this seemingly enchanted barn yard. All of which leads me to now. I was recently feeling frustration on a shopping trip to one of my favorite stores. You see, I was seeking a gift for a dear friend, who became a first time mother this past fall. This sweet companion of mine happens to be a descendant from a royal bloodline, so you can imagine that she needs for nothing monetarily. I wanted my present to stand out and be remembered. But how was I to compete within this circus of indulgences she had already been given? I reached out to
BEAUT Y|STORY
my mother, who then reminded me of my love affair with perfume, and the importance of scent memory. I took this idea and began researching her home country, Sri Lanka. I wanted to create a scent for her that smelled of home, so that when her precious baby was held tight, she would be raised with the familiarity of her mother’s homeland and her own noble ancestry. I discovered through reading traveller’s blogs that tea, particularly Earl Grey, was grown there, and could be smelled as the winds blew through the fields. I also poured through photographs and read stories of how spices would fill your lungs as one walked through the open air markets. The scent of cardamoms was repeated in multiple accounts. With my note card covered in scribbled notes, I dashed over to a Jo Malone boutique. Eagerly, I worked with their perfume expert on creating a scent that encompassed everything that would remind my dear friend of her motherland. After trying many different combinations, we came up with something beautiful. First, a faintly scented cream called Mimosa and Cardamom was to be applied to the body. When you have finished the first step, an Earl Grey and Cucumber perfume is to then be applied on top of the delicate cream. Alone, both scents were breathtaking; together, they were magic.
It was important to me that the scent not only reminded mother and child of Sri Lanka, but was also light enough to be worn while nursing or amid sweet baby snuggles. I feel that both were accomplished in this present. And, I was correct. As I met up with her for lunch on a trip to Texas recently, she was going on about the immense love and happiness she felt when she opened the well-thought-out package. Take that, you elegantly chic thousand dollar stroller so strategically presented at her shower. You see, the thing about perfume and scent memory is that no matter where you are, a single whiff alone can transcend you to another place and time. It does not matter if someone has passed from this world or you are thousands of miles away. From the moment you spray the contents of the bottle, you are together again in a place that makes you happier than anywhere else. And as I sit here in my sunny yet small Los Angeles apartment applying a bit of Chateau Krigler 12, I close my eyes and it is as though I am little again, running through the heavenly fields of my family’s southern farm. For just a moment, I can almost hear my grandmother’s laugh as I run up to her doused in my favorite barn yard aroma, offering her freshly bloomed wildflowers that just beg to be put in a vase. And what gift could possibly ever be better than that recollection? manukamag.com | 41

M U S I C REVIEWS K.ESS BY
K.ESS is the definition of a true R&B/neo-soul artist. As a singer and songwriter with a fresh sound, K.ESS is most celebrated for her honest lyrics, captivating melodies and soulful vocals. Influenced by music greats such as Sam Cooke, Etta James, Al Green, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson; K.ESS developed a passion for music at four years old. During her teens, she gravitated toward the sounds of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Alicia Keys. Today, K.ESS is greatly inspired by Frank Ocean, Drake, SZA and Miguel. Born in Melbourne, Australia, K.ESS was raised with traditional Greek values and Indian culture in the south-eastern suburbs. Being biracial, she embraced growing up in a diverse and ethnic community. Early on, K.ESS learnt to be comfortable in her own skin and is unapologetic for being different. With her exotic beauty mixed with her urban style, it’s no wonder why K.ESS makes a statement.
K.ESS has been described as sounding like Mariah Carey for her sweet, whispery singing style; Alicia Keys for her power; and Rihanna for her edge and rhythmic vocal ability. Her soulful tones have also been compared to Alessia Cara with her vocal acrobats comparable to Beyoncé. In spite of comparisons, K.ESS has developed her own sound, blending her honeyed voice with her velvety resonance. With her bold approach to her artistry, K.ESS has the knack of painting colors with her voice. Using her raw emotions together with her abstract lyrical compositions, she has that unique ability to captivate and transport listeners to the highest levels of consciousness. Whatever happens, K.ESS will continue to express her true self and keep it 100% soulful! With her zest for life and creativity, K.ESS is destined to become the next global music sensation.

RASPBERRY WINE TRE SAMUEL
HIVE MIND THE INTERNET
Tre Samuel’s music came across to me by chance as my friend kept raving about his music while sitting in my car. I handed her the AUX chord, as you do, rolling my eyes like “this better be as good as you say”. She showed me a song called “Alchemist”.
I have so many great things to say about this group! First off, I really enjoy their sound. I feel like it is a sound that has been lacking from the game and its refreshing. I instantly feel so relaxed and in the zone when listening to their album. This is a perfect album to listen to when you are driving or chilling. It takes you to another planet and is a great escape from those stressful days we all experience. Now I want to talk about the song “Girl”. Kudos for making a song that shows the beauty of a same sex relationship. Love should be spoken about in all its multi-facets and I really dig that Syd Tha Kyd did her thang on this. Such a mesmerising song and her voice reminds me of star drops falling off the moon. Yeah, I said it! The internet give me a ‘high’ without getting high!
Little did I know how much of an affect this song would have on me at the time from a lyrical standpoint, but also his luscious vocals! Smooth as butter and highly emotive. I fell in love with this song and it came at a perfect time in my life where I needed to hear those words and take action on my own life with a little more self-care. I then decided to listen to his whole EP called “Raspberry wine”. First of all! I love the title. It makes me instantly want to try this wine for some reason. I still need to! …But wow the songs just kept getting better and better. From the upbeat soul-esque vibes I got from “Roll Thru” to the smooth and sexy chill vocals I got from “100”… Oh and I can’t deny the heart tugging feels I got from “Stranger things”. This is an EP worth downloading. I think it deserves an award for the production alone! Lots of live instrumentation. I love that! Everything about this EP is just dope! Did I mention that Tre Samuel’s is from AUSTRALIA!?! Even better, right? Without a doubt, I will be supporting this local talent. I hope you all enjoy this EP like I did. This is definitely one I’ll have on my playlist for a long time.
I love what they did with “Roll (Burbank Funk)” as it gives me that happy disco inspired feel. How could I not be in a good mood listening to this track? Perfect to play at a dinner party while we are all sipping on champagne and grooving away. I can picture this played in a jazz club too. Oh man, the vibes! Same with “La Di Da”, it has the same exciting disco funk touches! It puts me in the best mood and yes, I feel that sweet suaveeee. I also wanted to touch on “Come Over”. Such a velvety smoothness with this song that stimulates my ear drums every time it plays. I get some Frank Ocean feels from this, but at the same time it’s a new sound in its own right. So much talent from this group. They are literally in my top 5 for this year’s favourite albums.

ALBUM REVIEWS (CONT.)
NEGRO SWAN BLOOD ORANGE Blood Orange is an artist I came across because I was interested in researching who helped write Solange’s songs. (Love Solange by the way!) And I was so surprised when I discovered this talent. His music will definitely remind you of some of her tunes. I also get Prince-ish vibes from Blood orange. He has a very sexy mystique about him and he portrays it well through his music. I feel that his music is eclectic, delivering us a different feel on each song. He has some key messages in his lyrics that I would encourage music-lovers to listen to, especially if you care about the world and want to be intellectually stimulated. I found this album to be very therapeutic and helped me embrace my poetic side, which I want to incorporate into my art more. The song “Jewelry” gave me chills and I was transported to another place (heaven!) listening to all the beautiful harmonies and peaceful accents of the song.

Another song I keep playing is “Holy Will” (feat. Ian Isiah). This was one of those songs that just took me to church with those soulful and raw vocals. The message in this song also grabbed my heart because of how close I felt to GOD listening to it. How did Blood Orange make this track sound so gospel but at the same time so funky? What a talent! Honestly! I am blown away… I could go on and on about this album, but just listen to it yourself to truly experience what I felt whilst enjoying this album. It has 16 songs, so listen all the way through to get the complete experience. Like me, you may feel blessed that you fully experienced this creatively inspired project!
