WELCOME TO MANUKA

W

e proudly welcome you to the first issue of MANUKA Magazine, a new online and print magazine celebrating fashion, style and culture around the globe.

This bi-monthly publication is a creative outlet for fashion enthusiasts and contributors worldwide. Fusing sophistication with street edge, MANUKA simply appreciates the best of both worlds. In a globally networked world, we give fashion lovers a taste of their favorite international luxury brands, while introducing them to new emerging designers. MANUKA will not be afraid to ask the hard questions. We are aware of the advanced social-conscious generation of globally engaged fashion lovers; therefore we will not only deliver fashion, but also the stories with pressing multicultural issues. Inspired by all cultures, the Cultural Evolution issue brings attention to the culture within fashion and art. It includes a number of stories that embrace culture behind the scenes in the fashion industry. We invited a group of talented photographers between New York, Barcelona, Melbourne and many cities in between to contribute to our fashion, beauty and travel pages. From the streets of Paris, we bring you fashion trends with the ultimate shopping guide to mix your chic flair with street styles. We have dedicated over 80-pages of fashion and beauty, which embrace freedom of expression for all seasons. In our feature article for this first issue; MANUKA gets up-close and personal with our cover girl, Angela Asiana, who was photographed by our contributing photographer, Ralf Eyertt. As a Swiss model, stylist and fashion designer, she tells us about her journey to breaking cultural barriers in Switzerland. We speak to South Africa’s Anri Pretorius, about modelling her way

to the top. We also turn the spotlight on British designer, Alexandra Zvi about building an ethical and sustainable fashion brand. Also in this issue, MANUKA showcases the early success of Haywire Jewellery, founded by Allegra Lipanje. In our Culture section, we take a look at four global cities including Paris, London, New York and Tokyo. We also go on a journey around the world with Barcelona’s fashion blogger and founder of VIEWSBYLAURA.COM. We then get lost in the music world with singer/songwriter and contributor, K’ESS, who reviews the sounds of the hottest music artists taking the world by storm. In our art series, we unlock the secret behind the success of Australian artist, Lynn Jaanz, including a look at her art. We hope this issue will stimulate your artistic senses and inspire new ideas. We look forward to receiving your feedback on this first issue. We also encourage your input on topics to be covered in future issues, and call on writers and contributors to sign up for MANUKA’s collaboration program (via email at submit@manukamag.com). Please enjoy reading the first issue of MANUKA. Our team and contributors have worked endlessly to bring multiculturalism to this issue. We look forward to bringing you more fashion, beauty and culture in the months ahead.

What’s the 4:44?

Jay-Z recently dropped his latest album, 4:44, which he refers to as the time he wrote his apology to Beyoncé for cheating. Once again Jay-Z’s cheating has become the hot topic following Beyoncé’s success with her album Lemonade in 2016.

Donuts by the bucketful! Trish’s Mini Donuts in San Francisco was stellar on INSIDER food’s instagram page with 517,560 views and 1,061 comments. The unique miniature version of traditional donuts looked scrumptious in the posted video and without a doubt the mini donuts were a hot feature of all food related posts.

A match made in Tinder heaven

College students, Michelle and Josh were matched on Tinder three years ago. After years of sarcastic jokes, the couple’s messages to each other went viral. Finally, they decided to meet on Good Morning America after Tinder offered them a trip to Maui for their first date. Not bad for internet dating.

What’s Trending?

Why did Donald Trump block model Chrissy Teigen? Well… he got his feelings hurt by her “Lolllllll no one likes you” tweet. Apparently, the truth does hurt! Perhaps they can settle this Twitter beef on Lip Sync Battle?

Shining bright like a diamond! Mega-star Rihanna caused quite a frenzy online after posting a pic of herself on instagram at the Barbados carnival. In just 15 hours, @Badgalriri had 3,637,382 likes (and counting). With fans and followers across the world going nuts with the commenting; it turned out that she even caught the attention of her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, who couldn’t resist the urge in commenting with two eye emojis. Clearly he just couldn’t look away as she ‘shined bright like a diamond’.

THE EMERGING DESIGNERS AND BRANDS FROM NYFW YOU MUST KNOW FOR 2017 Selfridges has been a top London destination and UK landmark for over a century, challenging the rules of retail from the day it opened its doors and became an instant sensation with British and international customers. Today, more than ever, Selfridges is committed to creating extraordinary customer experiences that amaze, amuse and surprise domestic and international visitors.

I

n July 2016, Selfridges introduced the Designer Studio at Selfridges London to provide a new home to over 60 international labels, 22 new labels and five shop-in-shop concepts. Following New York Fashion Week in February 2017, Selfridges took notice of New York’s creativity and its new style direction. This new energy for 2017 is celebrated across Selfridges’ Studios on 3 in London, with the arrival of new and exclusive collections from emerging talents discovered in New York City. Take a look at these brands invigorating New York’s fashion scene. ERIC SCHLÖSBERG Formerly one half of NY design duo Ammerman Schlösberg, Eric Schlösberg unveiled his second solo collection last September. The designer’s SS17 presentation resembled a beauty pageant and was theatrical, irreverent and dramatic. Schlösberg explores the darker side of success, superficiality and all its vices with his truly over-the-top collection inspired by the late playmate Anna Nicole Smith. New and exclusive to the Designer Studio, Eric Schlösberg’s collection invokes a sense of occasion “these pieces are meant to be worn out and feel special in,” he said. “Getting dressed up should be special. It’s kind of a lost art.” Prices range from $400 for a top to $1,149 for a dress.

ERIC SCHLÖSBERG

AREA One of the best labels to emerge from the New York scene, Area is the brainchild of Polish-born Piotrek Panszczyk and American designer Beckett Fogg. After meeting at Parsons School of Design in New York City, the designers developed a recognizable visual identity characterized by textile manipulation and decided to join forces and founded their label in 2013. Area’s collection offers a refreshing take on eveningwear with iridescent metallic dresses, Dalmatianprinted silk jumpsuits and crocodile embossed minidresses. Characteristic of every design is a bespoke embossing technique - a brand’s signature and various fabric treatments. Prices range from $275 for a t-shirt to $1,937 for a dress. GROUND ZERO Ground Zero is a contemporary fashion brand founded by brothers Eri and Philip Chu in Hong Kong. The brand’s signature is a combination of bold street style, accented by unique graphic prints showing the brothers’ humor, creativity and popular culture references. The designers showed their collection at VFiles presentation in New York, for SS17, inspired by cultural iconography that they grew up with in early 90’s including cartoons, sportswear, logos and graphics. Stand-out elements of Ground Zero’s SS17 collection are denim jackets and jeans paired with Leo and Johnny tees - the perfect pieces to satisfy every nostalgic 90’s kid.

Prices range from $137 for a t-shirt to $394 for a jacket.

ARPANA RAYAMJHI

MISHBV

ARPANA RAYAMJHI Artist and jewelry designer Arpana Rayamjhi was born and raised in Kathmandu. Now based in New York, her colorful bracelets and necklaces are influenced by her Nepali heritage and ethnic-pop culture. Each piece is unique, handmade and one-of-a-kind. After just launching her label in February 2017, her designs were selected for the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in Paris and worn by Gigi Hadid, Adriana Lima and Taylor Hill. Prices range from $440 for a choker to $775 for a necklace.

MISHBV Polish brand MISBHV made its New York Fashion Week debut in September 2016 and introduced its first-ever women’s collection. Natalia Maczek and Thomas Wirski started the brand over five years ago as a side project, creating a small line of t-shirts for close friends to wear in clubs. They do not design with specific genders in mind; guys and girls alike wear MISBHV’s oversized bombers, seethrough vinyl pants, and motocross-inspired jerseys. Prices range from $105 for a t-shirt to $315 for a jacket. Discover the new Designer Studio today on 3 at Selfridges Oxford Street, London.

THREAD BY THREAD DESIGNING A BETTER LIFE Fashion designer Alexandra Zvi is well known for her originality. She speaks to MANUKA about fashion and the ethics behind it as she prepares to launch her AW2018 collection. BY JOJO DAN’ELLE

GOTHIC ROMANCE COLLECTION PHOTOGRAPHY LOWEL ABALA

A

lexandra Zvi is eccentrically English and often compared to fellow British designer and couturier Alexander McQueen. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, a university city on the River Tyne in northeast England, Alexandra has been designing, producing fashion and costume for the past 20 years. Today, Alexandra resides in Melbourne, Australia and is on the verge of rebranding her label as an ethical brand. Inspired by her years working in fashion and costume, she caters to women who appreciate style and dare to be the center of attention. With an eye for detail, her designs are feminine, romantic and elegantly proportioned. Related to White Chapel tailors, Alexandra always knew that she was going to be a Fashion Designer. Perhaps it’s in her genes! As a little girl, Alexandra was contently occupied by making clothes for her dolls. Everything she did was working towards the life of a designer. Designing is what drives and fulfills Alexandra, bringing a sense of peace. She says “there isn’t anything better than practically creating the ideas that swim around in my head.” As a fan of French designer, Christian Lacroix, Alexandra says “his fearless ability to design what he saw, without necessarily being on trend is what truly inspires me as a designer.”

Each time a door closed for Alexandra, she turned a new corner in her life where design inevitably played a big part. With over 20 years in the fashion industry, Alexandra has not only been a Fashion designer, but also a stylist, textiles artist, costume designer and seamstress in theatre, television and film, as well as a design teacher. While living in the UK during her time in the costume corner, it became evident that she needed another string to her bow. Training as a technology teacher, Alexandra ended up teaching others how to design and produce fashion. Very soon she realized that teaching full time wasn’t going to fulfill her passion as teaching others only fueled her own desire to create. She reduced her teaching hours and used her skills creating textile panels for public and private spaces. This was a pivotal moment in Alexandra’s career as developing new surface decoration techniques and embellishments later became key elements for Alexandra Zvi designs. In 2008, Alexandra packed her bags to experience ‘new beginnings’ in Australia. Again, the life of teaching textiles filled her days. This time, a new syllabus, ‘Sustainable Textiles’! After endless hours spent on researching what ‘sustainable textiles’ even meant, she began to question what was happening within her beloved fashion industry? The topic of ‘ethical

fashion’ and ‘sustainability’ was irreversibly going to change Alexandra’s attitude towards how she purchased clothes and ultimately, how she would manufacture her collections in future. After a year of falling in love with Australia and its ‘laid back’ culture, Alexandra occupied her free time wandering around in Spotlight, a fabric and homewares chain store. “The remnant table was a particular joy”, she says. Within 6 weeks, a sewing machine was purchased on eBay. Alexandra was overjoyed. She says “I just couldn’t wait for my own sewing machine to arrive by sea”. Aussie life was skipping along nicely, until Alexandra received a phone call from the UK which changed everything. She was told that her mother was critically ill. Without any hesitation, Alexandra was back in the UK nursing her mother. During this incredibly difficult time, all things creative were shut down. Sadly, there was no longer the need for a sewing machine. After the sad death of Alexandra’s mother, Alexandra returned to Australia and returned to her Australian life as a teacher. She asked herself “where is my creativity”? In an instant, yet again at Spotlight, Alexandra found her mojo.

It had felt like such a long time since Alexandra had fully immersed herself in fashion. One evening after teaching others, Alexandra was joyfully browsing the remnant table, and the flicker of inspiration sparked into a flame. The red and black lurex threaded tweed screamed to be picked up and used for something magnificent. In the moment, Alexandra decided to be the student again and design a ‘final collection’, as if it was her final year of her fashion degree all those years ago. This process not only brought the much-needed healing from the loss of her mother, but also brought Gothic Romance to life. Gothic Romance, was Alexandra’s red and black collection from 2010 (as pictured right), which always received praise and admiration, grabbing the attention of fashion hunters. Following the completion of the Gothic Romance collection, the Alexandra Zvi brand was officially launched online. The high-fashion photos of Gothic Romance were a highlight on her website and social media. Shortly after, made-to-order requests started to flow in. In addition, Alexandra received the odd request for wedding dresses and chiffon chemises, which she shipped to fashion lovers across the world. After years of comfortably designing whilst teaching, the subject of ‘ethical fashion’ continued to shoot arrows

into her heart. Alexandra’s two worlds collided together in a life changing video about the plight of the beautiful girls of Tamil Nadu in India. Alexandra says, “these girls have been recruited to work in appalling conditions in the Indian cotton mills to make our cheap $5 t-shirts. These girls are the poorest of the poor in Indian society. They are promised a lump sum payment at the end of their 3-5-year contract, as it gives them the opportunity to pay for a dowry. Although outlawed, the dowry is still practiced. Without a dowry, many girls are unable to get married. The ‘Sumangali’ scheme (ironically this word means happily married) is basically human trafficking. Rarely is the contract honored, and if the girls do get to leave, less than 35% receive the promised lump sum”. “The fashion industry is broken; it’s been broken for a long time. Can the consumer honestly walk into a store and only pay $30 full price on a shirt and think that no-one in the life cycle of the shirt has not suffered. We have allowed our consciences to hibernate in our need for cheap fashion to fill our ever-expanding wardrobes”. Through tears of grief, Alexandra’s realization of why she had never let go of her need to be a fashion designer became crystal clear. She now had a real reason to design, other than indulging her creative soul. It was “my mission, my calling” she says. The need to be part of the change within the industry she had always wanted to be part of. Alexandra continues “the fashion industry is sick, and I; Alexandra Zvi was going to heal it”. Alexandra’s long-term goal is to employ these women or other exploited women in the manufacturing industry and offer them a respectful salary to produce her designs. “It is imperative that these women are properly remunerated for their services,” says Alexandra. “When the confident Alexandra Zvi woman buys my collection, she will know that she is not only making the entrance she desires, but making someone else’s life better”. With such a clear vision, Alexandra questions “could

one person make such a big difference”? Although the answer is not clear, she tells herself “thread by thread is how the fashion industry can change”. Today, Alexandra is about to launch her AW2018 collection inspired by the 1940’s tailoring and glamorous Lauren Bacall. This new collection encapsulates the clever design details as found in vintage clothing of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Between the silhouette of tailored jackets and wide leg pants with the vogue dress patterns, this new collection will highlight so much more intricacy than consumers are used to seeing in today’s fashion. She describes this collection as “elegant, classy with a twist of English quirkiness”. With a slight shift in her aesthetic from costume to ‘wearable’ fashion, Alexandra is now targeting the ‘regal’ woman who is confident and successful in her vocation. It is important to Alexandra that the woman wearing her brand values clothes that are designed rather than merely manufactured. They choose fashion because it’s stylish, and they purchase Alexandra Zvi to make a tangible and positive difference in someone else’s life. Although the elephant in the room is now too big to

ignore within the fashion industry, Alexandra has certainly left us with plenty to think about. She aims to engage with our readers and the buyers of high-end fashion who would not normally think about “who made my clothes”? Alexandra’s vision is to simply start the conversation. Who is responsible for this? Is it consumers or the fashion industry? ALEXANDRA ZVI is available at: www.alexandrazvi.com Follow on instagram @AlexandraZviDesign

HAYWIRE is a fresh jewelry brand emerging onto the international fashion scene. Founder and designer, Allegra Lipanje, speaks to MANUKA about her driving force behind birthing HAYWIRE. BY JOJO DAN’ELLE

J

ewelry designer, Allegra Franziska Lipanje who lives between Bali and Belgium, founded HAYWIRE in December 2016. Born on a small corner of the Adriatic Sea, which some writers have nicknamed ‘nowhere’, Allegra is of mixed Italian, Slovenian and Croatian heritage. Allegra launched HAYWIRE with the idea that there’s neglected beauty to be found in unexpected twists of fate and unusual places. Each piece of HAYWIRE jewelry has been cleverly designed. With every piece, her aim is to create something by thinking ‘outside the jewellery box’, bringing inreferences from art, history, music, film and fashion culture. HAYWIRE is designed for those with a taste for bold, edgy and minimalistic jewelry who enjoy urban style. With a Visual Cultures Degree from Goldsmiths University, London in 2012, Allegra has dabbled in art, fashion, creative writing and the human rights of indigenous people.

In 2016, Allegra discovered her passion for jewelry on the enchanted island of Bali, where one day she found herself making an earring with a pendant that said ‘courage’, which she’s worn ever since. Allegra’s biggest jewelry design inspirations are Elsa Peretti, and fine jewelry designer Bibi Van der Velden. Allegra says “ both of them in their own time have managed to create a style that is truly distinctive, unexpected and unique to them”. Through her designs, Allegra aspires to simply make a difference. The biggest motivation in driving sales for HAYWIRE is “to have the ability to contribute to several humanitarian causes that are dear to my heart” says Allegra. Her vision is to leave her mark on the world with every piece of jewelry she crafts with love. HAYWIRE is available at: www.haywirejewellery.com Follow on instagram @haywirejewelry

“S

eeing the silver lining around every dark cloud in life and showing appreciation for the little things, is what makes life worth living for” says South African19-year-old Anri Pretorius who has been nothing short of impressive. With great ambition to becoming a successful model, Anri didn’t wait around to be discovered. Her rise to the top was through determination, hard work and sacrifice. Leaving nothing to chance, Anri started modelling in 2014. She kept it simple, taking it day by day, one step at a time. Anri is now a professional print and runway model living in London, committed than ever to fulfilling her dreams. As Anri was growing up, her love for high fashion and strutting down a runway was never a huge surprise to those around her. This undenying passion remained a constant theme in her life. Without a doubt, her designer friends would take every opportunity to glam her up to showcase their own designs. During Anri’s year of training at the Model Academy in 2015, her natural talent for the runway was imminent. This led to Anri booking her first runway show for South African designer Sun Goddess. Thereafter, Anri

was selected as a runway model for the opening show for BrandsLuvU, followed by South African Fashion Week in 2015, featuring the Autumn/Winter collections of JJ Schoeman and Sun Goddess. She then took part in the 2015 Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup to model the designs of Jasmine Huang, winner of the Young Designer competition. After her first casting in 2015 for Day at the Races, Anri met Suzette Marais, CEO of Top Model South Africa, who encouraged Anri to enter Top Model, a leading professional model search competition. Suzette told us “I immediately realized she has amazing talent. She has a fresh and different look.” The following year in February 2016, Anri competed in the Top Model search without any hesitation. She impressed the judging panel comprising of many esteemed TV personalities, beauty queens and celebrities including: Jen Su; Riana Mooi; Dean and Crystal Mason; and Justin Divaris to name a few. Without ever expecting to win, Anri shone in the beautiful designs of Michael Bezuidenhout and took home the title of Top Model South Africa 2016 at Cradlestone Mall, Krugersdorp. “We were not surprised at all” says Suzette. “Anri is such a humble and bubbly girl. We believe that Anri will continue to be successful in future.”

Later in April 2016, Anri travelled to London and stepped onto the global stage to compete at Top Model Worldwide. The competition was held at the Hilton Metropole, where Anri at just 18, went to win the Top Model Worldwide title. As if that wasn’t enough, Anri also won the prestigious Photographic Award. It was no easy task winning against 175 finalists from over 4,000 entries worldwide and competing in seven headline categories. With winning both Top Model competitions, it comes with no surprise that Anri keeps these great achievements close to her heart. She describes the feeling as “indescribable”. “What a feeling! To have a title like that to your name is definitely the best feeling in the world ever” says Anri. Following her trip to London, Anri explains “it was my first international experience with models from across the world. I made a few friends (from Poland and Hawaii) and got to work with amazing people! The show was very professionally put together. I also had a chance to do some tourist sightseeing which was fun. I also realised that the fashion shows in South Africa are of a very high standard and compares well with the overseas events”. After concluding high school, Anri took a gap year and moved to London in pursuit of success in the fashion industry. “I moved to London to pursue my modelling career in one of the fashion capitals of the world, where I have always wanted to live” she tells us.

Between South Africa and London, she had already worked with many esteemed fashion photographers including: Mardo van Heerden; Indy Sagoo; Fifty8Photo; Tarryn Hatchett; Benn Healy; Gokhan Goksy; Darren Gwynn; Avron Leto Williams, Victor Bragaglia and many more. With hopes to follow the footsteps of super model Karlie Kloss, whom Anri looks up to; it’s evident that Anri’s captivating aura with her ability to transform her look has made Anri a favourite for photographic shoots. Following Anri’s debut at London Fashion Week in September 2016, she cat-walked her way to early success in London, where images of Anri on the runway for two designers, Delna Poonawalla and Michaela Frankova, were featured on Vogue UK’s website. “I couldn’t believe it! It was a dream come true for sure, since one of my many goals would be to feature on the cover of Vogue within 5 years” Anri says. This was certainly an amazing start for the supermodel in the making. Anri also aspires “to walk at all the major Fashion Week shows such as New York, Milan, Paris, Dubai etc”. After winning both Top Model South Africa and Top Model Worldwide titles, Anri has since appeared regularly in the media from SABC2’s (a South African television channel) Trendz show to Fashion One. She has featured in MPSA magazine and Dossier Magazine, been interviewed about her modelling career on the glamour Television show Top Billing, and appeared as a guest on a show on eNCA. Being a spontaneous speaker, Anri has also presented at the Top Model South Africa recruitment day, where she won the hearts of her audience with her extroverted and fun personality. Recently, Anri was invited to sit on the judging panel at the Top Model Worldwide and Top Model UK events in March 2017, and was made a runway coach/mentor for Top Model at their annual coaching weekend. The advice Anri gives to other model hopefuls competing in Top Model is “to have confidence, enjoy it and make the most of the opportunity! It is a once in a lifetime experience”.

With Leshelle, I started with correcting/concealing from the Make Up For Ever 5 Camouflage Creme Palette. I then used the Laura Mercier Radiance Primer on her skin (pre foundation). Make Up For Ever Face and Body Foundation was used for her base/foundation. I used a variety of colors building and blending to create the frosted look starting with the VISEART Sultry Muse Palette doing an all over swatch of the white shimmer, then layering a little of the silver shimmer from the same palette. I then layered on some of the iconic Pat McGrath Astral White Pigment (from the Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star 006 UltraViolet Blue) and then as a final layer, I patted on some of the Pat McGrath Cyber Clear Eye Gloss to finish (also from the Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star 006 UltraViolet Blue). Lashes and brows were all coated in NYX White Liquid Eyeliner. For her lips, I used the NYX Butter Gloss in the color Fortune Cookie and then added a layer of the Pat McGrath Cyber Clear Eye Gloss to give it that beautiful mirror like effect. A

ngela Asiana is a model, stylist, and art director born and raised in Switzerland. And if that wasn’t enough, she is also known as an emerging fashion designer and founder of Un Éclat de Couture, a haute couture brand fusing luxury European fashion with traditional Indian styles. With her striking beauty showing deep roots of Sri Lanka and India, Angela acknowledges, “it hasn’t been easy to respectfully take in the cultural exchange and create my own identity.” Although she passionately embraces her culture, she explains, “I feel that the Asian culture has somewhat been avoided or forgotten in the public eye. This meant that I never had someone to relate to, which often led to an isolating experience.” “In a society like Switzerland, where several cultural communities are residing, it still shows how close-minded the majority are, even though they live their lives in a free and multicultural country” Angela states. Angela hopes to set the idea that cultural exchange could be a common presence as well as to introduce her own culture into a new combination by “starring the Asian tradition with a modern and strong appearance in fashion.” She says, “my cultural background has taught me to use the best of both worlds to create something new.”

After graduating high school, Angela jumped at every opportunity to enhance her skills and talent. She received many opportunities to work with several upcoming brands and interesting fashion designers. With her hunger to succeed, Angela went on a mission to gain as much professional experience as possible through various internships, and started with luxury fashion and haute couture designer, Sara Schlumpf. She then continued her interests in business and fashion marketing at Option Model Agency, where she started a new chapter in Zürich. Angela currently works in the Bookings Department at Option Model Agency, which is where she first started to develop her career as a stylist and creative art director. As a model, she worked on campaigns for various boutiques and brands such as; Doéma Boutique; Bronx Colors Make Up Switzerland and Sara Schlumpf Haute Couture Paris. She also appeared in local magazines around Switzerland. Juggling between styling, modeling and designing, Angela continued to evolve, constantly elevating her personal style. This transformation led to an important chapter in her life where she began designing and creating her own

clothing, Un Éclat de Couture, which she founded in August 2016. Growing up in a modern society, Angela’s inspiration behind building this brand was to reinvent and modernize the fashion behind Indian culture. She says “it can be perceived as a conservative style of clothing especially for women, who are not encouraged to show too much skin or dress provocatively. I decided to bring a touch of sexy into this cultural world and create a new vision.” As a creative director, she expanded and took on several significant projects. “Designing fashion and modeling became a huge part of my life; giving me the best requirement not only to travel the world, but to also live every single day to the fullest” she explains. In May 2017, Angela had the opportunity to work with Raja Kumari, an Indian-American Grammy nominated songwriter, rapper and recording artist from Claremont, California, who wore Un Éclat de Couture at a show in Switzerland. Raja is best known for her collaboration with notable artists including Gwen Stefani, Iggy Azalea, Fifth Harmony, Knife Party, and Fall Out Boy. As Raja’s personal stylist and designer, Angela had the privilege in accompanying Raja at her shows across Switzerland. This international styling opportunity was certainly a highlight for Angela at this early stage of her career. Furthermore, Angela’s couture designs and styling work were photographed by Noémi Szabo and later featured in House of Solo, a UK magazine with a unique perspective on culture, fashion and lifestyle. “I like to express myself in a combination of fierce and sexy styles. This inspiring way of dressing was inspired by Donatella Versace, who is one of my favorite fashion designers” she exclaims.

CULTURE | COVER STORY

While growing up, Angela practiced classical Indian dance, ballet, and piano. She was a creative child who especially loved drawing, acting and modeling. Her interests in designing started when she was merely 13-years old. “I fell in love with the art of designing fashion way back in my life. I can’t even remember when it happened exactly. I guess this spirit of fashion has always been in me” she says. Angela’s greatest attraction to creative thinking is to “inspire and encourage other artists and young women like me to be themselves and show their confidence.” She is passionate in promoting this positive message especially to “those from my cultural background.” She hopes to encourage them to “show their confidence in the things in which they love to do and dares them to achieve their dreams! With great passion, Angela continues to say “it is key to stay true to your dreams and wishes and to never give up!” Designing became one of the most important things in Angela’s life, which gave her the confidence to be the woman she is today. “I strongly believe it will get me to my future goals and aspirations” she says. Most recently, Angela collaborated with Metro Boutique Official and G. Athletics, while building her second clothing line, The Real Ganja King, an urban hipster brand. She went with the word ‘ganja’, because “as a woman with a traditional cultural background, people judged me every day about my lifestyle and career choices, so the name ‘ganja’ stands for my boldness that gave me the power to make brave decisions and to stand up to them” she explains. In August 2017, Angela will attend the School of Arts and Design in Zurich to complete a course in ‘Fashion and Design’. Angela says, “I’m very keen to start my studies because this will give me the best opportunity to build a fundamental career.” This fashion mogul in the making is quite remarkable.

MUSIC A glimse of some of today’s most exciting music artist.

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: FOREVER 21 CAMPAIGN

The Skye’s the limit! BY J.D. NELSON AND K.ESS

H

ailed as a “musical prodigy on the rise,” by Wonderland Magazine, Justine Skye is a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter from Brooklyn, New York.

Known as the Purple Unicorn (due to her love of the color purple), she started things off by recording YouTube videos, which created buzz when she covered Drake’s ‘Headlines’ in August 2011. Following the video’s success, Justine quickly found the world fawning at her feet. Justine’s videos showcased her undeniable talent and superstar quality, giving her an enormous kick start to her music career. During this process, she began to earn respect within the music industry and by 2012, Justine’s ‘Skye High’ mixtape was circulating on the streets of New York and on YouTube. Her stunning and sensual voice with her quirky persona drew a large following, which led to her signing with Atlantic Records. Justine declared, “I am definitely inspired by ‘90s R&B; it’s in my veins. It’s just about the only thing my mom played when I was growing up.” Skye pointed out, however, that

154 | manukamag.com

her version of 90s R&B has been spiced up with a little modern-day twist. At just 17, Justine released her debut EP ‘Everyday Living’ later in 2013. The seven tracks on the EP were crisp and fresh while her voice was fire. Her music reflected the life of a teenager as she sang about boys, being in love, and kicking it with her girls. By 2015, Justine worked alongside other well-known artists, including rapper, TYGA, who featured on Justine’s single ‘Collide’. She also released her debut album ‘Emotionally Unavailable’ with 13 tracks, which again received a great response from fans. On this album, Justine let us in on different, yet intriguing aspects of her life. The songs presented a much more ‘grown up’ Justine. As evident on two of the tracks, ‘A Train’ and ‘Bandit,’ where she explores her sensuality. The slow grooving rhythms and lush vocals are maddeningly seductive. Later in October 2015, she performed at JAY Z’s TIDAL10X20 event, where she really turned some heads. To top things off, the stylish singer was not only blowing up the music scene, but also featured at a Tommy Hilfiger

followers raving about it! Justine is absolutely fierce and everything she touches turns to gold – or perhaps ‘purple’ in this instance. She then became the face of Forever 21’s most recent ‘festival collection’ campaign (as shown on top of opposite page). The collection offered a rock ‘n’ roll edge, and as part of the collaboration, an exclusive Justine Skye visual for a track titled ‘Flames’ was released in March 2017. As Justine mixes things up in both music and fashion, the R&B artist has been spotted with her high-profile friends such as Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Hailey Baldwin. She then posed on the red carpet with Kylie Jenner at the Diamond Ball, where they had the press in a frenzy.

MAC COSMETICS CAMPAIGN

show in Brazil, gaining attention from the fashion and beauty industries. In 2016, Justine parted with Atlantic Records and signed with Roc Nation (and Republic Records). They soon released an exciting new track ‘U Don’t Know’ featuring WIZKID. Yet again this song was a sensation on YouTube with over 3 million views. Justine’s destiny was set, and without a doubt, she was going to be a huge star! Her EP ‘8 Ounces’ released in December 2016, was produced entirely by Grammy award winning producer and artist The Dream, and was met with critical acclaim by Billboard, Fader, Genius, Vogue, and more. It featured 8 songs, including her single ‘Fun’ featuring Wale. Justine killed it again, bringing us soulful sounds mixed with an experimental vibe.

In latest news, Justine has just released a hot new single, ‘Back for More’ featuring Jeremih with a cutting-edge and artistic music video directed by Ant Blue Jr (as shown below on this page). She also recently tweeted that her album is not only done but on the way. From the sounds of this track, she’s got more greatness in store. This artist is one to watch, proving to be much more than the regular Brooklyn kid with the wild purple hair. She may not be as well-known as Beyoncé or Rihanna in today’s music world, but she is for sure on her way! Justine has been consistent with her music and without a doubt, a music sensation on the rise. So, don’t let the hype fool you, because this sassy songstress is a fresh, young talent who has worked hard towards her music career for the past seven years. It’s safe to say that she has certainly paid her dues. For more information visit www.justineskye.com Follow on instagram @justineskye NEW SINGLE AS TITLED BELOW

Being from Brooklyn, Justine has always had a passion for expressing herself through art and fashion. Flaunting her signature purple hair, swagger, and fashion-forward style, the 21-year-old songstress magnetically becomes the center of attention whenever she enters a room. It’s no wonder that her vibrant and super eccentric style led her to recent collaborations with MAC Cosmetics and Forever 21. Justine kicked off the MAC Cosmetics ‘Future Forward collection’ campaign in April 2017 with a soft purple iridescent highlight powder (as shown above on this page). “I love to glow and it’s important for me to have a good highlighter to brighten up,” she told Billboard. The product is absolutely gorgeous and has 1.1 million

MUSIC|INTERVIEW

@MANUKAMAG How did the name ‘K.ESS’ come

about?

@I.AM.K.ESS Well a really good friend of mine and

I were trying to come up with a unique name that still consisted of my name (Kim Saini) but was shortened and sounded cooler…then we came up with the name ‘K.ESS’ as it literally spells out my initials in a creative way. I love it! @MANUKAMAG When did you first start singing? @I.AM.K.ESS I have been singing for as long as I can

remember. My mother told me I use to sing a lot as a small child and I never really stopped! They loved it but I believe at times they wanted to duct tape my mouth as I would never shut up haha! @MANUKAMAG Who are your musical inspirations? @I.AM.K.ESS My music inspirations are very versatile as

I pull inspiration from almost everything. It is really hard for me to put them all in one list but I can say that I did grow up listening to Mariah Carey and Boys 2 Men but then again, I used to also listen to Britney Spears and the Spice Girls, so all of these artists influenced me in some type of way growing up. As I got older, I appreciated artists such as Sam Cooke, Etta James, Prince, Aretha Franklin, and really liked Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys and Bruno Mars.

@MANUKAMAG What kind of music do you listen to? @I.AM.K.ESS I listen to a bit of everything to be honest.

I am all about lyrics and how it makes me feel when I listen to it. If you go through my phone, I have some Country, Hip Hop, R&B songs and a bit of Rock. I like

to dabble in everything and as long as the words speak to me, I can vibe with it. @MANUKAMAG How would you describe your music? @I.AM.K.ESS I would describe my music as

‘experimental R&B’. The reason being is that I guess the sounds in my new music aren’t really classified as that classic R&B sound but it definitely does have the influences there. I really like to mess with trippy beats and mix it up with my R&B vocal style. I love experimenting with unorthodox sounds as they give me such an amazing vibe.

@MANUKAMAG

What is the best part of being an

artist?

@I.AM.K.ESS The best part about being an artist for

me is the creative process. I just love writing and I love being an open book and sharing my experiences with the world. Writing is an outlet for me and it is the biggest compliment when my fans can vibe with me and relate to what I am saying. There is no better feeling than helping someone. I love being in the studio, I love being around others who enjoy music like I do and I love the crowds energy and reaction when I perform. It is a very rewarding career which gives me such an unexplainable feeling.

@MANUKAMAG How would you describe your fashion

style?

@I.AM.K.ESS I would say it is very urban/street most of

the time, but I can switch it up on you just like that haha. I love wearing glamorous gowns when I go to events but I like to add my own little edge to my outfits with my

manukamag.com | 159

PHOTOGRAPHY J.D. NELSON

makeup style and accessories. @MANUKAMAG Where would you most like to perform? @I.AM.K.ESS I would love to perform at the Rod Laver Arena, the Super Bowl, Coachella… and the list goes on. I am just putting that out into the universe you know hehe. Never say never! @MANUKAMAG Which artist would you most like to

open for?

@I.AM.K.ESS I would love to open up for Frank Ocean!

That would literally make my life! I love him!!

@MANUKAMAG If you weren’t singing, what would

you be doing?

@I.AM.K.ESS I would be writing….perhaps an editor

of a magazine or an author or even a Psychologist.

@MANUKAMAG What hidden talents do you have? @I.AM.K.ESS I can put on lip stick anywhere, at any

time, without a mirror.

@MANUKAMAG What is your songwriting process like? @I.AM.K.ESS Sometimes it is so easy and breezy, but

other times I can have writers block like a m***** f*****. I usually just keep trying. I try to find inspiration by going somewhere quiet and peaceful. It has to come naturally for me. I do not like to write just for the sake of making a song. It has to be raw and meaningful to me. It has to be 100 % authentic! @MANUKAMAG Do you have any advice for

other artists who are trying to make a name for themselves? @I.AM.K.ESS Don’t ever give up. I know it gets hard. Sometimes you feel unmotivated in this industry and you just want to throw in the towel. The people you keep around you have a lot to do with that. Make sure you have a supportive team and always believe in yourself as you will experience many failures and get a lot of ‘NO’s’. Do not be discouraged and stay true to your music. @MANUKAMAG Have you got any music out and

where can people listen to it?

@I.AM.K.ESS I am working on my debut album at the

moment which I am hoping to release in 2018. Once it’s released, it will be available everywhere.

BLONDE FRANK OCEAN

SWEETSEXYSAVAGE KEHLANI

Oh Franky, Franky, Franky! Can this guy ever do any wrong? Ever since ‘Channel Orange’ came out and blew the world away, I’ve been waiting patiently for Frank Ocean to scatter his magical unicorn dust on us again.

Set off by Kehlani’s distinctive voice; sweet but tough like honeycomb, ‘SweetSexySavage’, took me right back to the 90s.

After a good four years, out came ‘Blonde’ his second studio album released in August 2016, followed by his visual album Endless. And let me tell you, it was definitely worth the wait. Every single song was so artistic, so deep… touching every bit of my soul and making me feel like I was a part of the authentic stories he was telling. Nothing short of a lyrical genius. From songs like ‘Nights’, ‘Self Control’ and ‘White Ferrari’, each song was amazingly written and produced in its own right. Can I choose a favorite song? Who am I even kidding!? Every song was magical and made the hairs on my neck raise up like never before. I can’t play many albums from top to bottom without skipping, but this album, (in fact, all of his albums thus far), I listen right through from start to finish and sink in all the goodness Mr Frank continually blesses us with. Frank is one of those artists who uses his spiritual mind and intelligence to lure you into his music… and that he does with ‘Blonde’! All in all, this album is a must buy. Real music, real lyrics, real artistry with a creative and unique spin on every song. Nobody does it like Frank! You know it and I know it. Need I say anymore?

This is the American singer and songwriter’s debut studio album released in January 2017, inspired by TLC’s, ‘CrazySexyCool’. Kehlani also cited Natasha Bedingfield, Colbie Caillat, Gwen Stefani, and Pink as the biggest inspirations for this album. After having a rough year, this fierce R&B songstress definitely came back with a very positive and uplifting album and we cannot fault her for that! Songs like ‘CRZY’, ‘Distraction’ and ‘Advice’ really hit home for a lot of us and it’s amazing how this woman can go from an upbeat club banger to a deep and meaningful ballad whilst keeping us so intrigued with that emotional, yet savvy voice of hers. With 17 songs for an album, it did become a bit much for my liking, nonetheless, I highly recommend this album to anyone and everyone. It’s very hard to find artists these days who are 100% true to themselves in their music. With her raw and honest lyrics, I can assure you that this amazing woman’s ‘authenticity’ is translated well throughout this album! Go Kehlani! It’s only up from here. THE JOURNEY BEHIND THE ARTISTRY Internationally acclaimed artist Lynn Jaanz speaks to MANUKA about her art, her inspiration and her healing. BY

L

ynn Jaanz is an internationally acclaimed artist who’s received honorable mention at the 30th Annual Chelsea International Fine Art Competition at the Agora Gallery in New York. Awarded for her series at Spectrum Miami Exhibition, she has featured in the Artist’s Palette Magazine and Melbourne Observer. Lynn has also appeared on Lethbridge Gallery’s website as a Lethbridge 10,000 finalist for her ‘Rapture’ painting. As an established and well-known prophetic artist, Lynn Jaanz’s colorful artwork is well sought-after between New York, Miami, Singapore, Milan, Rome, and Australia. Lynn regularly exhibits around the world and has sold her works internationally for over a decade. Her masterworks are bought as statement pieces as part of interior design projects for luxurious homes, while others are commissioned and sold to investors and art collectors. After exhibiting at the Plural Unique 2 show at Next Gallery in Piacenza, Italy in late 2015, Lynn has built a strong following in Italy. She recently exhibited at RossoCinabro Gallery as part of the Contemporary

Collected in Rome, Italy in May and July 2017. The Contemporary Collected was curated by Joe Hansen and Cristina Madini for RossoCinabro, which was also shown in Tokyo. The exhibition gave insight of how European artists were producing art today and showed a variety of selected items representing different disciplines. Art critics around the world have compared Lynn’s style to Jackson Pollock, the influential American painter. Pollock was known for his unique style of drip painting which made him a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. Lynn’s art is appreciated for its unique and fresh approach to abstract, with its underlying interpretations of spirituality and perception of a higher power. Her work has the ability to touch one’s heart and soul as her art translates significant meaning and sovereignty straight from the canvas. Born in Egypt and raised in Australia, art has always been part of Lynn’s life as she was surrounded by nature, beauty and artistic inspiration. Undoubtedly, this was a big reason why Lynn began to paint. After having travelled to Italy in the 80’s and seeing such inspiring paintings

and beauty of the countryside, Lynn was left with vivid images in her mind. These visions have been interpreted and still appear through some of Lynn’s paintings today. Living in Australia, Lynn naturally has great appreciation for Aboriginal art, which has taken on many transformations over the years; from a method of storytelling to signifying struggles, and to symbolize the contemporary indigenous identity. “I also like Olsen” she says, as she refers to John Olsen, described by the National Gallery in Victoria as ‘one of Australia’s greatest living artists’. Olsen is a major figure in the story of Australian art, known for his spirited and unique painting style and in particular for his lyrical representation of the landscape. Behind the joy of painting, Lynn spent years battling a chronic illness. Painting became a big part of her healing process as doctors instructed her to use painting as a form of recovery. This condition drew Lynn to the world of the supernatural. Today, her work reflects the way she sees life with all of its color and beauty. From rich warm hues to cool tones, Lynn searches the unknown phenomenon and psychic of the human condition and explores the complexities of living. She taps into a truly unique style of curves, with the use of color in erratic, speedy, busy tumultuous ways. Through fine lines and outlines of curves, Lynn’s search of higher power in all his glory is what she is celebrated for.

Lynn tells us “my inspiration comes from a supernatural place.” This illustrates the concept within Lynn’s work, which strongly reflects the connection between the human condition with the supernatural or spiritual. Her themes express mans search for meaning, search for god and the tragedy of living. The overriding theme is man being lost in the insanity of life only to find redemption and salvation. “Man is searching for meaning, searching for hope, searching for love, searching for significance in his perpetual state of confusion,” Lynn explains. Her art gives hope and rejoices the light in the dark. Described as an abstract colourist, Lynn is renowned for representing the journey of life extensively as the

topics of birth, death, heartache, sorrow, joy, love and eternity are depicted by the recurrent images of crosses and colours. Lynn’s use of extreme and strong colour, textures and imagery reinforce the different stages of life and the emotional conditions that come with it. The commotion expressed in some works depicts the myriad of experiences and sentiments on the journey. With close observation, art lovers can identify the varied durations, dramatic and poignant strokes. Her freehand style displays life in its fullness. Through these techniques, Lynn takes aestheticians on a journey within each color, with all its power, beauty and majesty. Her vision is to give art lovers “a sense of joy and peace in a world that is so full of fear.”

In addition to her artistry, Lynn launched her new book titled ‘A Journey from Heaven to Healing’ in February 2017. After having many near-death experiences, Lynn wrote this book to tell the story of her journey. Inspired by those struggling with what life has thrown at them, Lynn hoped to enthuse and nourish the souls of her readers with her words and her art as shown throughout the book. Lynn currently has a permanent exhibition at York Street Art Gallery, in Melbourne, Australia and at the Gallery in Tamborine Mountain, Australia where you can view Lynn’s artwork.

T

okyo is not only Japan’s capital but the world’s most populous metropolis. Including the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, Tokyo makes up 25% of Japan’s population with an estimated population of 36 million. Originating from the ethnic Jomon culture (the time in Japanese prehistory); the traditions were blended with Chinese and Korean influences, then Greek and Indian, and subsequently with European and American influences. It is no wonder why Japan has such a unique culture. The city’s history can be appreciated in districts such as Asakusa, and in many excellent museums, historic temples and gardens. Tokyo also offers great shopping, entertainment, with amazing dining spots, with a number of lush green parks and gardens within the city center.

manukamag.com | 183

Tourists can watch cultural performances such as kabuki (complex dramas performed in elaborate costumes), noh (restrained and highly stylized drama), bunraku (puppet theater), kyogen (short comedic plays), and kamishibai (storytelling with animation, sound, and music). With its unique culture reflected in Japanese traditional arts; art and craft lovers will also enjoy floral arranging, origami, and woodblock printing.

Travel Tips

With Tokyo’s rich culture, it is also worth experiencing traditions such as games, onsen (hot springs used as public bathing places), and tea ceremonies.

Bowing Bowing is simply like a handshake in Japanese culture. Failing to return a bow is considered very impolite.

It is important prior to visiting Tokyo to learn and understand some traditions that are ingrained in the culture. Knowing and following cultural traditions of the city makes it easier for tourists to be accepted by the locals.
