RANIERA IN THE RAIONA DEN Raniera was a humble, hard-working, tane from Israel. He loved Ihowā and had a very strong faith and belief in him. Raniera was captured when Jerusalem was defeated by the Babylonians. Darius was the new kingi of Babylon. He picked 120 of the very best iwi in his kingdom to help him rule. He then picked toru tāne to be in charge of these 120. The kingi liked Raniera because he was very clever and made Raniera one of these governors – he also had a kōrero about putting Raniera in charge of his entire kingdom. The other tāne didn’t like that Raniera had been put in charge because he was a captive from Israel and not a Persian like them. They decided to find something Raniera did wrong to get him into trouble with the kingi. But, Raniera was very hard working and no matter how they tried, these tāne couldn’t find anything kino about Raniera. Raniera honoured the kingi in all he did, and he did everything the very best he could. The tāne knew that nothing would stop Raniera from praying to Ihowā every day so they decided to get the Kingi to pass a new law. The law stated that “for toru tekau days no tane, wahine or tamaiti is to pray to any atua or man except Kingi Darius. If anybody disobeys this law, they will be thrown into a den of hungry raiona.”
When Raniera heard about the new law that had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened towards Jerusalem. Toru times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to Ihowā, just as he had done all the days before the new law. The tāne saw Raniera praying and went to the Kingi. “Did you not declare a law that during the next toru tekau days if anyone prays to any atua or human being except yourself, Your Majesty, they would be thrown into the raiona den?” Kingi Darius answered “the law stands”. So the tāne told him “Raniera, one of the captured, is paying no attention to the law, Your Majesty. He’s still praying toru times a day”. When the Kingi heard this he became very upset, and didbecame all he could to try and save Raniera. At sunset the tāne came back to the Kingi and said “the law that you made cannot be changed.” So the Kingi gave the order for Raniera to be arrested and thrown into the den of raiona. Before he was thrown into the pit, Kingi Darius said to him “May the Atua you serve all the time save you!” A stone was then placed over the opening of the den, and the Kingi sealed it with his signet ring and the rings of his nobles so that the situation Raniera was in could not be changed. Then Kingi Darius returned to his palace and spent the po without kai or being able to moe.
At the very first light of ata, Kingi Darius rushed to the raiona den. When he got near the den he shouted out “Raniera, servant of the living Atua, has your Atua saved you from the raiona?” Maybe he didn’t expect an answer, but Raniera called back “May the Kingi live forever! My Atua sent His anahera and shut the mouths of the raiona so that they would not hurt me, because I have done nothing wrong in His sight. Neither have I done anything wrong to you, Your Majesty.” Kingi Darius was so hari he ordered Raniera be lifted out of the den. When he was lifted out, there was not a mark on him because he trusted in Ihowā. Kingi Darius knew Ihowā had saved Raniera and had the tāne who had accused Raniera bought before him. He commanded that these tāne, along with their wives and tamariki be thrown into the raiona den, and before they had reached the floor of the den, the raiona overpowered them and ate them. Kingi Darius wanted the world to know that Ihowā had protected his faithful servant, Raniera. He wrote a new law commanding that everybody in the kingdom worship the one true, living Atua “for He is the living Atua and He lives forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed and His authority will never end. He rescues and He saves; He performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Raniera from the power of the raiona.”
HOW YOU CAN KNOW IHOWĀ This true story of Raniera and how Ihowā protected him, tells us about our wonderful Atua who made us and who wants a relationship with us. Ihowā knows we have done kino things, which He calls sin. Have you ever told a lie? Have you ever disobeyed your parents? The punishment for sin is death, but Ihowā loves us so much He sent his only tama, Ihu, to die on a rīpeka and be punished for our sin. Then Ihu came back to life and went home to Heaven. The Paipera Tapu tell us that if you are sorry for the things you do wrong and need help to change, you can kōrero/pray to Ihowā and tell him you are sorry. If you believe in Ihu and ask Him to forgive your sins, He will do it! He will come and live in you now, and you will live with Him forever. You are asking Ihu to take charge of your life, and you are now choosing to live for him - as he wants you to live. If you want to ask Ihowā to forgive your sins and live for Him, you could say something like this: Dear Ihowā I believe that Ihu died for me and now lives again. Please come into my life and forgive my sins, so that I can have a new life now, and one day go to be with you forever. Help me to live for you as your tamaiti. Amen When you receive Ihu as your Lord and Saviour, you are still a tamaiti of your parents but you will also be part of the whānau of Ihowā.

Instructions: 1. Colour the raiona upoko and tinana. 2. Carefully remove the page from this magazine. 3. Cut around the upoko and the tinana. 4. Glue onto the heavy paper/card. 5. Punch holes where indicated. 6. Use a brass fastener to attach the upoko to the tinana. Note : If you do not want to remove the page from this magazine, you can copy or trace it onto a piece of paper.

IHU KARAITI REME & RAIONA OF HEAVEN
Ihu is sometimes called the Reme of Ihowā who came to take away everyone’s sin, but He’s also something else – a raiona! One day He will return to earth to put an end to sin, pain and tears forever. The first time Ihu came to earth, He came like a reme – humble and willing to be put to death on a rīpeka. He lived a perfect life, never did anything kino and did everything Ihowā asked Him to. We could not do that, but He could. He took the punishment for everybody’s sin so that we could have a relationship with Ihowā (2 Koriniti 5:21). That’s an amazing koha! But the next time Ihu comes to earth, it will be different. He is the promised raiona of the tribe of Judah, who will rule as the Kingi of the universe (Kenehi 49:9, Whakakitenga 5:5). Not only that, He has promised to make a new heaven and new earth (Whakakitenga 21-22). When this happens, He has promised that those who aroha Him, have asked for Him to forgive their sins and have given their lives to Him, will live with Him forever. Ihu has a place in heaven for everyone who has invited Him into their lives and asks for forgiveness of their sins.

RAIONA PANCAKES INGREDIENTS For Pancakes 2 C paraoa 3 T huka ½ t tote 1 T pēkana paura 2 hua heihei 1 t vanilla 1¾ C miraka ¼ C pata, melted For Raiona Whipped Topping Ārani Segments Licorice Strips Rōpere Reihana Tiakarete Chips
In a medium bowl, whisk together paraoa, huka, tote and pēkana paura. In a separate bowl, whisk together the hua heihei, miraka and vanilla. Slowly add the pata. Create a well in the middle of the dry ingredients. Pour wet ingredients into the well and stir the batter until combined. There may be small lumps. Allow the batter to rest for at least rima minutes. Heat a pan. Spritz with cooking oil and some additional pata before adding any batter. For the raiona, pour about tahi cup into the pan. When bubbles begin to show on the surface, flip and cook until completely cooked through.
To decorate the raiona, place the pancake on a large plate.
Create a circle around the pancake using the ārani segments.
Use your whipped topping to create a base for the whiskers.
In the middle of the whipped topping, place ½ a rōpere as the nose of the raiona.
On each side, place toru licorice strips and tiakarete chips as whiskers. Place rua reihana as eyes. Serve and enjoy.
