Matariki is a group of about one thousand nga whetu, but only whitu are visible without a telescope. They are one of the closest groups of nga whetu to our planet, but they are still a long, long way from us – 420 light years or more than 4 quadrillon kilometres away!! The biggest and brightest whetu is named Matariki, and is 5.7 million kilometres wide. This is over waru times bigger than our ra, and our ra can fit 1.3 million earths inside it! We are so iti compared to our universe! In the old days, Maori iwi looked out for the Matariki nga whetu to appear in the rangi near the horizon. When they saw them, they knew it was time to start preparing to plant their crops. Matariki was also a time for the iwi to remember those that had gone before them – their tipuna. It symbolises beginnings and endings. Matariki was the start of the new year – a time to celebrate and remember those who had passed on. Matariki came at the end of the year’s harvesting when the kai had been preserved and stored. So at Matariki, it is good to celebrate and give thanks for all that we have.

In the Paipera Tapu, Ihowā talks about Matariki (also known as Pleiades). The Paipera Tapu asks us in Ihaia 40:26 to : “Look at the rangi at po: Who do you think made all this? Who marches this army of nga whetu out each po, counts them off, calls each by ingoa – so magnificent, so powerful – and never overlooks a single one?” And then tell us in Ihaia 40:28 “Ihowā is the Creator of all you can see or imagine. He doesn’t get tired, and doesn’t pause to catch His breath. He knows everything – inside and out.” Nga Whetu remind us how amazing Ihowā is – how enormous, powerful and forever Ihowā is. What is even more amazing than the massive size of our universe, is that Ihowā wants to be our hoa. He wants YOU to be a part of His whanau. Do you know that because we have all done kino things, there is nothing we can do to be good enough to be a part of the whanau of Ihowā? But Ihowā has so much aroha for you, He sent His only tama, Ihu Karaiti, to take the punishment that was ours, so we could join His whanau. Later in this magazine, we will learn how to accept the koha Ihowā gave us through His tama.

HOW CAN I BECOME A HOA OF IHOWĀ?

Everyone is born with sin in them. Sin is something we do, say or think that doesn’t please Ihowā. “Everyone has sinned. No one measures up to God’s glory.” Romans 3:23 Ihowā created us to talk with Him and live in a close relationship with Him, just like whanau. But because of sin, an invisible wall has been set up and this stops us being close to Ihowā. Many iwi try to please Ihowā by doing good things or going to church. These things are good but unfortunately they can’t take away your sin. “When you sin, the pay you get is death. But Ihowā gives you the koha of eternal life because of what Ihu Karaiti has done.” Romans 6:23

WE MUST EACH RECEIVE IHU KARAITI AS OUR OWN LORD AND SAVIOUR. Only when we have accepted Ihu, the wonderful koha from Ihowā, can we know and experience the plan Ihowā has for our lives. “Some iwi did accept Him. They believed in His name. He gave them the right to become tamariki of Ihowā.” John 1:12 Receiving Ihu means turning to Ihowā and being sorry for our sin. It means trusting Ihu to come into our lives, to forgive our sin and making us what He wants us to be. We must make a decision to receive Ihu by faith. When I am in charge of my life, I do what I want to do. When Ihu is in charge of my life, He gives me strength to do what Ihowā wants me to do and to make right choices.

Ihowa knows we have done kino things, which He calls sin. The penalty for sin is death. Ihowa aroha us so much He sent his Tama, Ihu Karaiti, to die on a ripeka and pay our penalty. Ihu came alive and went back to Heaven! Now Ihowa can forgive our sins. If you want to turn from your sins, say this to Ihowa: “Dear Ihowa. I believe Ihu died for me and now lives again. Please come into my life and forgive my sins, so I can have new life now and then be with you forever. Help me live for you as your tamaiti. Amine.” Hoani 3:16

JONAH I SPY Colour the same objects one colour, then count each object and write the number on the label.

Ihowā gave Jonah a job to do, but Jonah didn’t want to do it. When Jonah tried to run away to Tarshish, he got into trouble. Help Jonah find his way to Joppa and then on to Nineveh so he can do what Ihowā asked him to do.
