The Greatest Gift
receiving presents and Rewi is just one of thousands who will be delighted with various gifts from loved ones this year. But of all the people who give and receive gifts this Christmas, many have never received the greatest gift of all.
“Wow! That’s really cool!” exclaimed Rewi as he and his Dad placed the little scale-model helicopter with its radiocontrol box on the table. His parents had given it to him for Christmas and the two of them had spent most of the morning assembling it in the workshop at the back of the garage. Now they had brought it inside to show Rewi’s Mum their handiwork. She was impressed by what they had achieved and smiled at Rewi’s obvious excitement.
The greatest gift was given by God Himself about 2000 years ago. One of the best known verses in the Bible says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life”.
“Hey Dad! Can we take it out and give it a try now?” Rewi asked. “Well, it’s a bit windy outside at present. Probably a bit rough for it. You don’t want it smashed on the first day. If it’s not windy tomorrow morning we’ll take it across to the park and give it a go,” his Dad replied.
When people want to show their love for someone they often do so with a gift. When we understand the magnitude of God’s gift to us we can never doubt the fact that He loves us and His love is beyond our human understanding.

Christmas is a good time to remember that the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came into this world to reveal to us what God is like. But more than this, He came to deal with our greatest problem – our sin. On the cruel cross at Calvary, just outside the city of Jerusalem, Jesus suffered and died. He shed His precious blood and paid the penalty for our sin.
and how to gently land it. A light breeze had sprung up but it didn’t appear too dangerous for the little craft. Rewi was impatient to have a turn but his Dad wanted to make sure he understood what to do first. Finally he got to hold the little control box himself. It was amazing! Just by working the controls as his Dad had shown him he could make the machine do what he wanted. He wanted to see how high it could go and he had it flying way above the tops of the trees in the centre of the park.
One of the most amazing verses in the Bible is 2 Corinthians 5:21 for it reveals the fact that Jesus, who was holy, righteous, and perfectly sinless, became sin for us. “God made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God”. The next morning Rewi was up bright and early and drew back the curtains in his room. He saw that the trees were not blowing around as they had been the day before. He quickly pulled on his pants and shirt and was out in the lounge in a flash. He could hear his Dad’s electric razor going in the bathroom and he wasted no time in bursting in on him, “Can we do it today, Dad?” There’s no wind out there today!” “Yeah, just give me a chance to get done here Rewi. We better have some breakfast first,” his Dad responded. He had a few days off from work and he was pleased to spend some time with his son. Within the hour they were over at the park preparing for the first test flight. Rewi’s Dad had the first go and showed his son how by using the buttons and the little control stick he could make the helicopter rise and fall, travel forwards or sideways
“Watch it Rewi. You’ll lose control of it if you’re not careful,” his Dad called to him. Just then a gust of wind took it towards the trees and Dad grabbed the control box to steer it away into a more open part of the park. “You nearly lost it then! See how easily it can happen!” said his Dad.

He gave the controls back to his son who carried on as the “pilot” until he decided to bring it in for a nice gentle landing. At the same time as the little helicopter neared the ground a fox terrier thought it looked like something interesting to chase and bounded across the park to intercept it. Rewi panicked and tried to make his helicopter rise again but instead he steered it towards the dog and it continued on its downward course. About 25 metres from Rewi, dog and helicopter met on a collision course and the little terrier’s playtime turned rather painful when the rotor blades clipped his nose as the machine landed rather clumsily. The little dog yelped
off across the park and disappeared into a house across the street. Rewi went to rescue his helicopter and was pleased to find there was no serious damage.“You’re going to need a few more lessons in controlling that thing,” said his Dad, “or it’s not going to last very long at that rate.”
Yes, Jesus was in full control of His death and He was in full control of His resurrection. He is alive today! Right now! The Bible says, “Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:25).
Speaking of control, here’s a good question, “Who is controlling your life?” Maybe you think you are. But there are situations in life that are beyond our control. Just when we think we’ve got it all together, sickness, marriage breakup or serious accident strikes almost without warning and we find life coming apart. We try to tough it out but it gets us in the end. Maybe your life is out of control. Or maybe it’s being controlled by alcohol, sex or drugs. These are destructive things that end in disaster. We like to think we are the masters of our own destiny but in reality we’re not.
The only way to ensure you are under control is to hand the control box of your life to Him. You don’t know the future; He does. You don’t have the strength to go it alone; He does.
There has only ever been one Person on this planet who was always in full control. Even when it came to the ultimate, Jesus said, “I have power to lay down My life, and power to take it again” (John 10:18). Yes, He voluntarily laid down His life for us. When the temple guards came to arrest Him, Peter drew his sword and had a swipe at a servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Jesus rebuked him saying, “Do you think I cannot call on My Father and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:51-53).
Speaking of those who have put their trust in Him, Jesus says, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no-one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; no-one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29). Why not receive the Greatest Gift of all? Open the door of your heart and life to the One who loves you even unto death. Again Jesus says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20). – Graham Batson

With summer holidays coming up and what some call ‘the festive season’ fast approaching, many New Zealanders are tempted to consume alcohol over these hotter months.
effects can be clearly seen throughout Aotearoa. People drink for many different reasons and in many different ways. We see booze in nearly every super market and in many cafes. We see young people walking the street half dressed and barely coherent. Older people stumbling down the road and many people attending drug and alcohol rehabs to try and stay sober. We see alcohol glorified in the rich and famous and alcohol used by the poor and lonely.
Alcohol has ruined so many peoples lives in this country. We see it on the news and in the headlines, things like, ‘Gene Mutation May Be Tied to Drunken Recklessness,’ ‘Substance Abuse And Suicide’, ‘murders, drunk driving, homicide, child abuse, domestic abuse, alcohol induced violence, rape and molestation.’ The list goes on and it’s not pretty!

There’s accounts of New Zealand children witnessing their father beat their mother nearly to death. I got told a story about a sister being raped repetitively over a number of years by her alcoholic father whilst another of the sisters was forced to watch. Do you see how horrible this legal drug is? If you have a problem with alcohol keep reading. There is help available. If you have a ‘quiet wine’ with your dinner daily and you think you’re not addicted, keep reading because you could be more of a problem to others than you think.
Pretty bad eh? And this list isn’t exhaustive, there are plenty of other things to add to this list like, hangovers, alcohol poisoning, overdose, weight gain, personality changes, drink-related accidents, anxiety, headaches, impotence, memory loss, confusion, disorganisation and twitching The list goes on and on and as you can plainly see alcohol is a killer, causer of disease and ruiner of lives.
Lets start by having a quick look at some of the potential conditions and complications of alcohol. First I will list the body part affected then the complication or condition.
Mouth - Cancer of mouth, voice box and throat. Stomach and food pipe - Cancer of food pipe (oesophagus), chronic gastritis. “Tobacco packets have explicit Intestines warnings on Them, - Cancer of bowel. alcohol should have one too.” Liver - Cancer of liver, alcoholic liver disease (fatty liver, hepatitis, cirrhosis).

GUIDELINES FOR drinking
According the New Zealand Health Survey in 2011/12, 80% of New Zealand adults consumed alcohol in the year surveyed, 80 percent! What is this world coming too? We know what this drug does to communities and to individual people, so why do we do it? Is the temporary good feeling worth it in the end?
Scripture gives many warnings about drinking wine, yet does not forbid it so how can we know what to do? Following are a set of questions and if answered honestly in light of Scripture can be very helpful to you. There isn’t enough space to give this important subject the thorough detail needed but it is a start.
So now that we have begun to get a better understanding of the devastating effects of this legal drug, should we drink it? In my personal opinion the answer is surely no. Why? Other than the horrible risks as listed on the previous page, if someone looks to you as a leader and they see you buying or drinking alcohol or even know that you drink, you may lead them into serious, life threatening, family altering habitual sin, and even worse, you may never know the havoc you have caused them, their family, friends, colleagues and their relationship with God until it’s too late.
#1 Is today’s wine the same as what it was in Bible times?
You need to determine what exact kind of wine is referred to in the Bible, then you will need to determine how that wine compares to what is produced and drunk today. You see, you can’t use the old line that says, ‘Jesus and the apostles drunk wine so it’s ok for me,’ because you and them are not even drinking the same stuff!

Many genuine believers who love God and want to obey His word, justify their drinking on the basis of it being an acceptable practice in the Bible. However, on closer examination of what wine was then, and what it is now, you will come to the conclusion that the wine is nothing like the way it used to be in in times past. Do you think Jesus rode
on His donkey to Pak n Save to buy a bottle of wine? I don’t think so. #2 Is drinking even necessary?
In Bible times (and in some parts of the world today), good drinking water either did not exist or was very rare. The safest drink was wine, and wine that had alcoholic content was especially safe because of the antiseptic effect of the alcohol. It actually purified the water. #3 Is drinking the best choice?
Because drinking isn’t totally forbidden in Scripture and because it is not a necessity for believers in most parts of the world today, drinking is a matter of choice. The next question is therefore, is it the best choice? By having just a brief look at the stats earlier on in this article we can see that the answer to this question is again, no.

#4 Is drinking habit forming?
A lot of different things can become habitual, some are good, and some not so good and can also become very difficult to break. Drinking is one of them, not just for us but the people looking to us for guidance and leadership. #5 Is drinking potentially destructive?
Another concern that is blatantly obvious is alcohol’s potential for destructiveness. As we know very well, the mental, physical, and social destructiveness of alcohol is so evident that we can’t deny it. Over 40 percent of all violent deaths are alcohol related, and at least 50 percent of all traffic fatalities involve drivers who were drinking. It is estimated that at least one fourth of all hospitalised psychiatric patients have a problem with alcohol.
#8 Is it right for me to drink at all?
#6 Will my drinking offend others?
A person who is able to drink in moderation is not able to guarantee that their example won’t cause a weaker person to try drinking and become addicted or to relapse and become addicted again. In Paul’s day, a former drunk who becomes a Christian would often associate many immoral and corrupt activities with drinking and to see a fellow Christian drink was likely to offend his conscience. This is the same in our culture today. Our freedom in Christ stops where it begins to harm others, especially fellow believers. We have no right to destroy with our drinking, him for whom Christ died. #7 Will it harm my Christian testimony?
We have seen that the answer to the first question is clearly no, the wine drunk in Bible times is not the same as todays wine. The answers to the second and third questions are also no, it is generally unnecessary to drink and is not the best choice. The answer to the next four questions are yes to some degree. Drinking is not the best choice, is clearly habit forming, potentially destructive and it’s likely to offend other people and it could harm your testimony before unbelievers if you’re a Christian. Let me leave you with one final question, ask yourself this: Can I drink in front of others and before God in total faith and confidence that it is right? Please pray about it and really think about your drinking. As a Christian who was a fully fledged alcoholic, then came to Christ who then smashed the chains of addiction from me, I have seen the damage first hand in my life and the life of my own family and my friends. Please think before you buy your next supply. If you can’t stop drinking, there is help available to you today, please reach out.
If you are drinking, especially in clubs and pubs, what does the world see when they look at you? You are doing the same thing they are, drinking. Yes, they may be wallowing in their drunken sin like a pig in mud and absolutely loving it, but when they see you bring alcohol to your lips, you have immediately just justified their position in their mind and you are automatically just the same as them. Social drinking done among our youth today is disastrous. Often it leads to binge drinking to car accidents, relationship breakdowns and personal destruction. as I’m good I would go to heaven when I die. As my dad got older he developed an illness that would later take his life. I was ten years old when he died. He was a hard worker but I didn’t know him all that well. When he passed that was the end of church, singing and Sunday School.
My dad was a lay-man in the Anglican Church and in the evenings he would call us all together and he would “do” church, sing a few Maori hymns, then he would read a passage from the Bible and on Sundays we would go to Church. Church didn’t really make much sense to me at that time but I did believe there was a God and I believed as long
After about a year I began to miss those things, however as I grew older I went further away from anything that even represented Church. In August 1960 my mum and I left our family home, (which was near Ruatoria) a place called Tikapa, to come to Napier on invitation from my oldest brother. We lived in Carlyle St with him, his wife and family. On my Sunday morning walks I would stop outside a Church building and listen to the singing, wondering what it would be like to go inside.

I met a girl ( Synnove) in 1962 who would later become my wife. We courted for a number of years before we married, during which time and on rare occasions, her parents would invite me to Church. I heard talk that was kind of strange at the time like, “It is sin that separates us from God,” and that “no one

Did you learn anything today?” She would wait until we were sitting down at the kitchen table over a meal (a good meal always shuts me up) then she would tell me. Over the next few months things were starting to improve. We were at least communicating again, which was something we both longed for to happen but never knew how. It was a start to something that later was to be more beautiful.

Sitting in on one of the workshops, I learned that sin was the root cause of my being separated from God (here it
was again) and there is a penalty for sin which is death (Spiritual death). But the Gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:23. I heard how Satan seeks to rob Christ of His glory and the sinner of salvation. I learned how sin destroys lives, relationships, homes and nations. I heard that sin was the reason Jesus died on the cross that we may have life in Him, and that Jesus has once for all defeated Satan and made it possible for anyone who would believe to be saved from sin. God helped me understand that even while I was still in my sinful state Christ died for me. Romans 5:8. From that moment I knew that there was nothing I could do to win God’s favour, God loved me while I was still a sinner. He demonstrated his love for me by sacrificing his one and only Son to die a horrible death on a cross, paid the penalty for my sin, and if I would believe in Him (Jesus) and receive him, I will not perish but have eternal life. John 1: 12; John 3:16.
I believed that day that Jesus died for me and that He paid my sin debt in full. On the last camp day I asked Jesus into my heart and life to be my Saviour and Lord, I asked Him to
forgive me of my sins, He did, and He is now my Lord. I now have eternal and newness of life in Him. I’m a new person now in Christ Jesus. II Corinthians 5:17. Just a few weeks of walking in newness of life, I was challenged to take part in an outing (a dinner at a hotel) and I knew it would involve alcohol. As I sat in the car at the hotel car park, I thought deeply about what I was about to do. Before I walked into the Hotel restaurant I asked God if He would help me overcome any temptation to drink alcohol, and He did! 1 Corinthians 10:13. Not a drop of alcohol touched my lips that night.
Since November 1987 to this day, the desire to drink alcohol has never returned. “What a God!! What A Saviour !!” Twenty eight years now I’ve been walking with God and yes there have been trials and there will be more in the future, but I am a work in progress and God is bringing me to maturity. James 1:3-4. My wife and I have experienced many blessings over the years. I know God has completely restored our marriage. That’s not to say we don’t have our differences, of course we do, but we can now talk our differences through and we certainly have more respect for each others uniqueness.

God will continue to help me as I apply His truths to my life. I praise God that my wife and I are in a Church with leaders who are passionate about being careful in handling and teaching without compromise, God’s precious word. I know God is shaping and moulding me into the person He wants me to be as I walk in obedience on the truth and authority of His word in continual service for Him.

Marriage Whose Money Is It Anyway? With Christmas upon us, sometimes we get stressed! One of the burdens is financial strain. In Matthew 6:33 Jesus says to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you. The things that will be added to you if you first seek God’s kingdom are the necessities of life. You see, Christmas in our culture is so caught up in external materialism and self gratification, that we sometimes forget the real meaning behind Christmas. The birth of Jesus Christ. If you find yourself financially short this Christmas, DON’T WORRY about it! The Lord will provide you with everything you require! He will supply you with all that you need to accomplish all that He requires of you. Yes you may not be able to afford to buy your son the latest Xbox or your daughter the latest tablet or iphone, but the Lord will provide you and the ones in your care with all the necessities of life. So instead of seeking and worrying about food, drink, clothing and gifts, focus your attention and hopes on the things of the Lord and He will take care of all your needs.

Matters A famous guy once said, “God’s work done in God’s way, will never lack God’s supply.” If you honestly seek to do the Lord’s will, you will never be in need of anything. We won’t always get what we want, but God will always make sure we get what we need. Philippians 4:6 says, Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. So as Christmas day approaches please remember to seek the Lord and stop worrying about everything but instead pray to the Lord who created everything! Also, take time out to just be together with your spouse before the big day and remember that Christmas is all about the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ, not the passing things of this earth.

Method: - Prepare this meal in a roasting dish with a tight fitting lid, or cover with a double layer of tinfoil and seal well. - Preheat oven to 180 degrees. - Sprinkle celery, parsley, carrots into the dish. - Lay the brisket on top, followed by the lamb shoulder chops. - Pour over stock. No salt is needed. - Cover the dish and cook in a moderate oven for 3 hours.
