LEGENDARY DISCOVERY at the Cradle of Humankind!

A new fossil discovery simply named “Homo naledi” has this morning been unveiled at the Maropeng visitors centre at the Cradle of Humankind in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg.

Story continues on PAGE 3

The ground breaking discovery comes after two years of excavation work in the area led by Professor Lee Burger in 2013, called the rising star excavation. Homo naledi looks like one of the most primitive members of our genus but also has surprisingly human-like features, enough to warrant placing it in the genus ‘Homo’. The discovery was announced by Wits University and National Geographic Society and the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation of South Africa. According to the excavation team, the new species appears to have intentionally de-

posited bodies of its dead in a remote cave chamber, behaviour thought previously limited to humans. The chamber was so small a call was made to the public through social media and the internet thereby requiring the assistance of very slim individuals. The opening of the tunnel was 18cm wide making it nearly impossible for an average size human being to enter the cave. The Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday’s (September 10) announcement shows that there is always something new coming out of Africa.

MEETINGS, CEREMONIES, INVITATIONS, GIGS, EVENTS, CELEBRATIONS AND MORE... Abogogo Emely Holwane (left), Makhosazana and Leah Mhlanga perform a ritual of prayer to invite ancestors to be a part of the ceremony at the African Traditional Medicine Day held at the Thokoza Youth Center on August 29.

“Being Sangomas of an informed generation, the regular workshops we have with professional nurses and doctors equip us with the ability to identify symptoms of illnesses like TB, HIV and AIDS which we cannot treat.” Those were the words of Gogo Leah Mhlanga who was among the African Medicine Practitioners who gathered on Saturday, August 29, in Thokoza to celebrate African Traditional Medicine Day in partnership with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. African Medicine Day is celebrated nationally today (31 August) and in her keynote address on Saturday Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development, Cllr Makhosazana Mabaso, highlighted the importance of cooperation amongst health practitioners in order to achieve a 60% drop in new HIV infections by 2016.

On approaching the location, about eight suspects bolted and disappeared into the darkness and dangerous mine shafts. The metro police were able to seize equipment left behind by the suspects. Two buckets full of gold

Almost human like fossil discovery unveiled!

“The discovery of the new species of primitive hominid…reveals much about our own origins and our own ancestors and in time it will reveal much more about ourselves and will probably tell us more about our future as well”. Ramaphosa said the new discovery would be far reaching beyond the scientific community, it would inspire poets and writers to revisit Africa’s rich oral tradition and to imagine ways to retell the story of our own common ancestory and it would encourage us to explore further about our whole scope of human existence.

main in the chamber. “With almost every bone in the body represented multiple times, Homo-Naledi is already practically the best-known fossil member of our lineage,” said Lee Berer, research professor in the Evolutionary Studies Institute at the Witwatersrand University. The ground-breaking discovery of a new species of early hominid in South Africa’s Cradle of Humankind has shed new light on what we know about the species that roamed the Earth before early man.

The Deputy President said when the Maropeng visitor’s centre was unveiled almost ten years ago they never imagined that a new species would unearthed telling us more about our own human journey that we never knew before.

Fossils of the new species, which has been named Hom- Naledi, were discovered during National Geographic’s "Rising Star" exploration at one of the world’s richest hominid fossil sites in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, about an hour outside of Johannesburg.

“We now know that research conducted here will reveal more information for many more generations to come,” added Ramaphosa.

“Naledi” is Setswana for “star”, and the name’s been chosen as a tribute to the Dinaledi cave system where scientists made the find in September 2013.

So far, the team has recovered parts of at least 15 individuals of the same species, a small fraction of the fossils believed to re-

“Homo naledi represents an extraordinary discovery because it’s something we never expected: small brains, a primitive and evolved body something that I think no one expected to exist in the fossil record,” Berger says. Berger says the find and the expedition, which unearthed more than a thousand individual remains is significant for South Africa. “The science of paleoanthropology actually began in South Africa with the discovery of the Taung Child back in 1924, but after the 1950s, the interests of scientists moved to East Africa, where great discoveries were made and that was probably true, right up until the early 21st century. “Then discoveries began to be made in southern Africa again, surprisingly, right in the areas where we’d been looking. We thought there was nothing left to find. “Now, particularly over the past six years, we’ve realised that not only is this area practically unexplored, but it holds some of the best and richest fossil deposits on the planet,” he says.

The Rising Star expedition was in itself a remarkable one. The extraordinary chamber was found about 30m underground, and was only accessible through an extremely narrow chute. Getting access through the small opening was so difficult that Berger had to co-opt a team of “underground astronauts” for the task - scientists who didn’t just have PhDs and experience in working in caves, but who were also skinny enough to scale down the narrow chute to get to the fossils. One of the first scientists to enter the cave was post-doctoral research fellow at Wits, Marina Elliot. “Just before you reach the chamber where the fossils are, it’s a very tight squeeze,” she said. “It’s kind of a birthing into this chamber. You look around, you’re wearing a headlamp. Everywhere your light shone, you could see there were bone fragments. It was really thrilling to realise how much material was there.”

CENTRALIZED Database makes suppliers’ lives easier

The newly launched Central Supplier Database (CSD) will improve the lives of suppliers who conduct business with government, says supplier Aaron Mgqueto. “It will improve my business in that it will save me time, we won’t have to take forms to Bisho (Eastern Cape) where we have to move from office to office. Now you just sit down and do it in a professional way and know that you are registered,” Mgqueto told SAnews. This follows the launch of the database by Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene on Tuesday, September 1. Speaking at the launch of the CSD at the Industrial Development

Zone (IDZ) in East London, in the Eastern Cape, Minister Nene said the database serves as the source of all supplier information for all spheres of government. The purpose of centralising government’s supplier database is to reduce duplication of effort and cost for both the supplier and government, while enabling the electronic procurement process. 1 Septeber 2015 marked the first day whereby suppliers can register themselves on the CSD website www.csd.gov.za. Chief Director: Supply Chain Management ICT in the Office of the Chief Procurement Officer at National Treasury, Schalk Human, said the CSD is an intervention to reduce the administration

burden on business. Mgqueto, who has been in the security business since 1998, said the system will improve the way in which suppliers do business with government. A challenge that Mgqueto faced when dealing with government related to tenders. “Sometimes government goes with tenders and on those tenders they don’t come back to us to inform us who has won the tender. Yes I was not in the tender business, I was in the private sector for a while. I just joined them last year and I found it to be a challenge,” he explained. Among the benefits of being registered on the database is that sup-

pliers will only be required to register once when they do business with government and they will not be required to submit physical tax clearance and business registration certificates to organs of state. Mgqueto - who was assisted by Minister Nene to register on the CSD - currently conducts his business in the Eastern Cape. He is hopeful that he will extend his business to Gauteng, among other provinces. “It was exciting to be helped [in registering on the CSD] by the Minister,” he said. Human said that as of today, suppliers can register online and it will be compulsory for government departments and state-

owned enterprises to use the CSD as from 1 April 2016 and for municipalities 1 July 2016. “The benefit for business will be that it will reduce admin significantly and it will make it easy for them to engage government,” said Human. When coming to suppliers who are in rural areas and don’t have access to computers, Human said suppliers will be assisted. “We foresee support to rural suppliers happening in three ways first in district offices, Thusong Service Centres, Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) offices and the Post Office. They will have the functionality to assist the suppliers to register,” said Human.

Ntirhisano roadshows brings government closer to people Gauteng Premier David Makhura visited projects in Roshnee, Sebokeng, Evaton and Rustervaal on the 2nd and 3rd September. The visits to various projects were followed by a community meeting with people from the same communities. In recent weeks, Premier Makhura accompanied by the Members of the Executive Council and Mayors have visited communities in Tshwane and Ekurhuleni to ensure that communities know government cares and will act to deliver services. The efficient delivery of services remains a priority for the Gauteng Government. Last year, the provincial government launched the Ntirhisano Service Delivery War Room to radically change the way government serves the people. The Service Delivery War Room is a province-wide, integrated, comprehensive and sustainable service delivery model that seeks to radically restructure interface between government and the people to better respond to their needs. Ntirhisano roadshows is aimed at unlocking service delivery blockages. The roadshows are an ongoing project where the provincial government visits various regions in Gauteng to try bring solutions to challenges. During these visits government officials listen to concerns raised by residents and intervene. One of the projects the Premier visited on the 2nd September was the Gordona Park in Roshnee. The park was once a dumping site but the community

rehabilitated the area and developed it into a park and recreational facility.

HIGH PERFORMANCE AEROBATHON ACTION INVADES EKURHULENI

Being physically inactive is considered a risk factor for several illnesses and medical conditions. Residents in the City of Ekurhuleni no longer have expose themselves to this risk as Saturday mornings are now dedicated to aerobics marathon sessions.

Since the beginning of the year, fitness fanatics have been converging at various sports grounds and community parks to partake in three-hour long aerobics sessions in a bid to keep their bodies in tip-top shape. One such aerobathon took place on August 29 at Bulithando Park in Kwa-Thema, while teams from the northern and southern parts of Ekurhuleni converged at the Reiger Park Arena for a more invigorating joint session. The City-wide aerobics movement event is opened free of charge to the public and includes a variety of styles namely Hi-Low, Kata Box and Zumba.

Participants at Bulithando Park began the session with warm-up squats and brisk jumps, followed by intense 15 minute routines, with water breaks in between. Monde Ntuli, a gym instructor from Duduza, said: “Keeping fit is my lifestyle and it gives me fulfillment to share my expertise with people who are passionate about leading a healthy life.” The Ekurhuleni aerobathon sessions will continue every Saturday morning until December from 08:00 until 11:00 at venues across the City (see the attached schedule for Aerobics Marathon dates and venues). Information on established aerobics clubs within communities is also available at the sessions.

"What we are seeing here is a good story to tell. It is inspiring when communities themselves address their own needs and here in Roshnee they have done exactly that," said Makhura. Makhura also visited the Evaton a Renewal Project and the Rustervaal community where he held a public meeting aimed at addressing service delivery issues affecting residents. During the public meeting, concerns raised by residents included the lack of burial space in the nearby cemetery These Sedibeng ladies are one of many beneficiaries of sustainable employwhich has also been vandalised. ment and opportunities, formulated by the Gauteng Provincial Government. The community also raised concerns about drug abuse in the area, high unemployment amongst the youth, skills development and lack of proper policing.
