Shondoni Colliery opens in Secunda! On Thursday, July 5, Sasol officially opened its newest coal mine in Secunda (Mpumalanga) as part of its R14 billion mine replacement programme. Meaning “a place of wealth”, Shondoni replaces Sasol Mining’s Middelbult Colliery, which has reached the end of its lifespan. Mineral Resources minister, Gwede Mantashe joined the inauguration ceremony hosted by the company’s mining division. Sasol Mining is South Africa’s third largest coal producer and runs one of the world’s largest underground coal-mining complexes. It produces over 40 million tons of coal

annually of which more than 90% is used in factories that produce Sasol’s high quality synthetic fuels and a wide range of chemicals. The Shondoni mine is valued at R5.2 Billion. Sasol’s Joint President and CEO, Bongani Nqwababa, said the R14 billion mine replacement programme supports Sasol’s strategy to operate its southern African facilities until 2050. The programme commenced in 2009. “It is also part of our capital expenditure in South Africa which, over the last five years,

has amounted to more than R94 billion,” said Nqwababa. Modern in many respects, distinguishing Shondoni from the rest of Sasol’s other five collieries is the use of renewable energy, which includes the use of solar geysers to heat pumps. The mine also holds the record of having the longest single flight conveyor without an intermediate booster drive in Africa, at 21km. Over the next 30 years, it is expected to deliver between 8 and 9 MT of coal per annum and currently employs about 1 200 people.

The BNC, which will be led by President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Ghanaian counterpart President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will meet bi-annually alternating between Accra and Tshwane in order to build on the bilateral and economic cooperation between the two countries. The BNC was announced on Thursday (5 July) after official talks during the State visit by Akufo-Addo in Tshwane aimed at strengthening the already good political, economic and social relations between South Africa and Ghana. Up until now, the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) oversaw the implementation of existing 22 bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding that the two countries share.

This moment set in motion events that would change his life forever. • Madiba’s time on Robben Island is depicted on the R100 banknote, where he was incarcerated for 18 of his 27 years in prison. • The inspiration for the R200 banknote comes from the moment when Madiba greeted the nation for the first time as a statesman. • The commemorative R5 circulation coin features a portrait of Madiba, smiling at the nation he helped to build.

lder persons or better known as the “senior citizens” are viewed as important in any society. This is in the main i due to the believe that a nation draws wisdom from them, their experiences often provides guidance. They further add value to our communities as they also take care of the vulnerable including orphaned children provide support to unemployed dependents in their families. However, the reality for some leaves a lot to be desired, being alive seems like a curse due to the abuse they experience from their relatives/ families. This ranges from the financial abuse, sexual, emotional abuse, physical, psychological, social, sexual and neglect and is, in

The abuse of elderly people happens in their own homes, while living with family and in facilities responsible for their wellbeing. We must speak up when we suspect or come across an elderly person that is being abused in any form. Our constitution protects the rights of all, especially the vulnerable, and this includes the elderly. In South Africa, 8% of the population is older than 60 years. All of us deserve to be respected, to feel dignified and safe where we live. Therefore, becomes important to be able to to spot the warning signs, know the risk factors and how you can prevent and report instances of abuse. We owe it to older generations to ensure that their so-called Golden Years are not tarnished by abuse and neglect.

many circumstances, an unspoken of or under- reported crime. Older persons are vulnerable to abuse because of their age, state of health, social circumstances or other factors (such as crime and violence). Frail older persons are more vulnerable as they are dependent on caregivers for survival. Abuse negatively impacts the physical, emotional, social and economic wellbeing of older persons and occurs across all economic, ethnic, religious gender cultural groups. Elder abuse is a crime and if committed should be reported. Everyone has a responsibility to report abuse and take the necessary steps to protect and assist the victim. It is an offence to conceal elder abuse in terms of the Older Persons Act No 13 of 2006. The 15th of June marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a UN-designated day which aims to drawn attention to the various challenges and abuses faced by the world’s senior citizens. CJ van Zyl, chief executive of city-based Fulami, an organisation focusing on improving the well-being of elderly person, say elder abuse is emerging as an important issue within the elderly community. “With South Africa’s rapidly ageing population it is estimated that by 2031 the population aged 65 years and over will nearly double, which means that this problem will become even bigger in future Van Zyl said there were many ways to take a stand against elder abuse, including learning about the forms and signs of elder abuse and neglect, such as frequent arguments or tension between the caregiver and the elderly person and changes in personality, providing a break for a caregiver, and volunteering to be a visitor at a retirement village or old-age home.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development works closely with Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) such as the Gauteng Older Persons Forum, Age in Action and other Organizations to prevent elder abuse. These Organizations are mandated to conduct awareness campaigns and initiatives that fight against the abuse of older person. “Cabinet appreciates that social grants are a lifeline to the most vulnerable members of our society and therefore such inconvenience is very much regrettable,” Communications Minister Nomvula Mokonyane said during a post Cabinet media briefing held in Tshwane on Thursday, July 6. Mokonyane told Mapepeza that Social Development Minister Susan Shabangu has assured Cabinet that the technical glitches were a result of the transition of the payments from an old system to a new South African Social Security Agency/South African Post Office system. “She [Shabangu] has assured Cabinet that most of the affected beneficiaries have since been paid. Meanwhile, dedicated teams are working hard to stabilise the systems to prevent a recurrence of such delays in the future,” replied Mokonyane to the question of timeframes on the resolution of the glitches. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and South African Post Office (SAPO) are currently facilitating a card swap from the old SASSA/Grindrod cards to the

new SASSA/SAPO by end of August 2018. The changing of cards are currently taking place at identified venues, including pay point stations, community halls and SAPO branches. SASSA is also in the process of phasing out Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), as directed by the Constitutional Court and introducing the South African Post Office (SAPO) to pay social grants. The changing of cards are currently taking place at identified venues, including pay point stations, community halls and SAPO branches.

FIRES are more dangerous this Winter. Beware!

WINTER brings the dry spell that accompany strong winds and very low temperatures, which brings the increase in structural fires and massive veld fires. While fires are a danger on their own, they promulgate a host of challenges for drivers when they occur near major roads and national freeways. In the past years, emergency services personnel had to service vehicle pileups on the freeways around the city and other major roads whereby lives were lost because of veld fires. As winter is on its last month as per calendar season just before the start of Spring, winds are blowing strongly and any small open flame or heat on the dry vegetation has a potential to influence the rapid growth and spread of the fire along wide areas. Heavy dense smoke along the major roads and freeways, will reduce visibility and often increase traffic calming. Drivers should immediately reduce their speed and exercise extreme caution in that specific situation. Some obvious causes of such veld fires along freeways and major roads are lit cigarette buds thrown out of windows by motorists and passengers alike, broken glass bot-

tles through concaving sun rays to a point (Magnifying glass), deliberate and accident causes including spontaneous combustion in the situation of a compose. This is not only a threat to human life but to animal life and environment as well. While driving and visibility becomes very poor, don`t attempt to drive through thick smoke or flames as this spell high potentiality of accident to occur. Due to poor visibility motorist may either run off the road, collide with stationary obstacles such as vehicles or involved in head-on-collisions with other vehicles attempting to drive through from the opposite direction. Secondary to freezing cold weather conditions as expected in this week, the following can assist in averting accident deaths. Just recently, lives were lost around the Cities due to incidents of toxic gas inhalation. It is still a common practice for people going to bed with lit Braziers, lit coal stoves, lit fire places, braai stands or even electrical stove still on. When blankets fall on top of the stove, will catch alight and produce toxic gases such as Carbon monoxide and Hydrogen Cyanide. Inhalation of such gases causes

suffocation and ultimately death. Many domestic fires are caused by electrical wiring through short circuit and illegal connections. Heaters are still placed near the combustible and left unmonitored which is an unsafe practice. Unattended air conditioners running throughout the night domestically or at the offices causes unnecessary fires. All heating sources should be switched off in the absence of adults. Children playing with matches and lighters are a major source of house fires. When fall in the hands of children are a significant factor in fire fatalities and property destruction. Parents need to keep all such away from the reach of children.

Although it speaks much to the young female generation, it has something for everyone. Following the journeys of Jackie and some of the people who helped her craft this book, you’ll be emotionally exercised by what the characters of the stories endure and do to each other. The main story follows the life of Treasure, a young and ambitious girl from the West Rand who has just left her home to chase her dreams in the ‘City of Gold’, Johannesburg. Reading through each chapter, you’ll be taken away by the road travelled

by Treasure into a luxurious illusion of a perfect life. Bare has been an answer to many about the insideout tactics of the ‘sugardaddies’ or ‘blessers’ and how they use young souls to get sexual and other favours. A section reverse cover of the book read: “After 1994, life in the new South African democracy involves a different kind of war. Those who dismantled the unjust regime have left their #bornfree children to build a better one. But the #bornfree and #blessed are not equipped. Those who fought for freedom neglected to educate their offspring about social civilization and self-worth.” According to Jackie, most of the events covered in the 215-page book come from her diary and experiences she recorded throughout her teens and early adulthood. Being a national best selling book did not come from marketing or promotions. Because of the real elements in the story that relate to so many young people in the country today, this made Bare a worthy collector’s item - a tool to ‘educate the coming generation.’ Buy the book online or at any leading book store countrywide. Follow Jackie Phamotse on social media to be inspired by here day-to-day rituals and messages.

TO WIN YOUR SIGNED COPY OF BARE: Please send us a Whatsapp message on (078)2218002, tell us your views on the “Blesser Game” described in the book. First come, first served. Books must be collected at our office in Heidelberg or Katlehong.
