“Diabetes Has No Shape or Size, sisi!” WORLD DIABETES DAY CELEBRATED IN TEMBISA!

A

young mother of two, Tebogo Mokgope (27) was shocked to learn that although obesity is associated with diabetes, no one is immune to the disease. Every year, November 12 is observed as World Diabetes Day, and the City of Ekurhuleni took a campaign to Rabasotho Community Hall in Tembisa to spread awareness about this silent killer. “I never cared to check myself, I am young and not obese so I really didn’t think that I was at risk until I learnt today that I am killing myself and my kids with the oily food I cook and sugary drinks I give them,” she said. Mokgope acknowledged that a life style change is long overdue after learning that diabetes is amongst the leading causes of

death. NB: Ekurhuleni encourages its residents to look out for the following warning signs: • Blurred vision; • Fatigue; • Frequent urination; • Increased thirst and hunger; • Nausea; • Skin infection; • Weight loss or gain that has no obvious cause; • Wounds that heal slowly. Communities are also advised to follow the diabetic portion plate to prevent diabetes health related ailments; • Half the plate should consist of fruits and vegetables; • One quarter of the plate should be ones’ choice of protein; • The other quarter should be filled with any starch.

Dietician from Nutrition Data System for Research, Jade Jackson takes Tebogo Mokgope through a session on the kinds of food to eat to prevent diabetes health related ailments as part of the World Diabetes Day campaign held at Rabasotho Hall in Tembisa.

GAUTENG MINI-BUDGET: “We promise more inclusive growth and governance!”

T

he total budget of the provincial government has increased from R108 billion to R112 billion. The biggest recipients of additional allocations are Health, Education, Infrastructure, Roads and Transport, and e-Gov.ernment departments. This additional expenditure will be financed from the Asset Financing Reserve. Speaking during the tabling of the province’s Medium Term Budget Policy Statement and the Adjustment Budget to the Legislature on November 16, MEC Creecy emphasised the important role sub-national governments must now play to drive social and economic transformation of their cities or city regions. “Because the Gauteng Government understands it cannot solve the challenges the province faces alone, we have worked hard to bring in the collective ideas, creativity and active partnerships of all Gautengers in all we do,” MEC Creecy said. Even in these tough times, the Gauteng province remains the primary destination for

foreign direct investment (FDI). According to the FDI Intelligence Report, between January 2011 and December 2016; a total of 460 investment projects were recorded in Gauteng. These projects represent a total capital investment of R153 billion. This year the first five Mega Human Settlements, namely Leeupoort; Daggafontein; John Dube; Chief Albert Luthuli and Montrose, have attracted approximately R29 billion in new private sector investment. It is estimated that this new investment will create over 50 000 new jobs over the next three years. “In the 2016/17 the Gauteng Government spent R12.4 billion on infrastructure delivery. This is the third year in a row where departments succeeded in spending by more than 96% of the appropriated budget. Research by the Gauteng Government estimates that our infrastrcuture spend is on average creating 53 000 direct jobs per year,” the MEC said. Since 2014 government has spent 92% of its goods and services budget, procuring from

historically disadvantaged individuals. This amounts to R53,9 billion over the last three and a half years and 11 036 firms owned by historically disadvantaged individuals have benefited. Included in the overall figure are 3 484 companies owned by women, and 2 385 companies owed by youth.

“All Gauteng departments and entities have also been working hard to ensure better financial management and greater public accountability in the use of public funds,” she said. 23 provincial departments and entities now boast clean audits, meaning that two out of three provincial institutions received unqualified audits with no matters of emphasis, while all other departments received unqualified audits. The MEC also reported that over the last three years provincial government had saved nearly half a billion rand by cutting expenditure on non core items. “Despite sluggish economic growth, we have managed to increase our own provin-

cial revenue collection from R4, 9 billion in 2014/15 to R5, 8 billion in 2016/17. This represents an increase of 16% over the past three years,” she explained. The MEC also announced that the gambling tax review, which is a process to align Gauteng’s gambling tax regime with that of other provinces, is nearing completion. These new regulations will increase the province’s gambling tax revenue by more than 12%.

Brutally Murdered and Buried in the Bushes! Mapepeza Correspondent reports

December 1 is the date set by Nigel Regional Magistrate for the case of five people believed to be behind the kidnapping, assault and murder of a young man in Ratanda.

the deceased victim matched the one’s discovered at the house where the alleged kidnapping, torture and murder took place.

This was after the body of a young man was exhumed by the National Forensic Investigating Team and SAPS K9 Search and Rescue Unit on Wednesday afternoon, October 8. The news of this discovery by police has shocked residents in Ratanda Township, south of Gauteng.

The 50 year old woman, claimed to be the home owner, was arrested together with a 30 year old male.

Police have confirmed that a decomposing corpse was unearthed in the field of cut trees and bushes, between the Obed ‘Mthombeni’ Nkosi section and Extension 23. The suspects have previously appeared at the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, October 9. According to media correspondence, the victim was buried in an unmarked grave during the night after he was assaulted to death, allegedly by the arrested suspects. Ratanda Police began investigating when a missing person case was opened by the victim’s family in May this year. The detectives team, led by Detectives Branch Commander, Captain Dookhi investigated the case until a breakthrough was made last month.

After thorough investigations and interviews on the suspects, this is the place police were led to discover the body of the young man who went missing in May, after being alledgedly kidnapped and murdered.

The local detectives working together with the National Forensic Investigation Team visited the suspected house for further investigation. Information from police reveal that the blood stains of

On Tuesday, October 7 the home owner wasout on R10 000 bail, but her accomplice was denied bail. The two suspects have already appeared at several times before the Magistrate. Three people believed to be also involved; a man and his wife (aged 30 and 37 respectively) with a 31 year old male partner in crime, were arrested on murder and kidnapping charges on Tuesday, October 7. Thorough interrogations on the suspects led to one of them pointing out where the deceased was buried in a shallow grave in the open grassland, near the R549 Vaaldam Road in Ratanda. SAPS Ekurhuleni-East Cluster Commander, Major General Girly Mumsy Mbele, appreciated good working relationship amongst the Ratanda Detectives and all the efforts of ensuring effective investigations and apprehending of the suspects. The community residents of Ratanda who worked with police, should also be thanked for their courage and cooperation in helping to find young man buried the shallow grave, and, identifying the responsible person.

Read the Book of Joel 2:28-32, which God speaks of the ‘out-pouring’ of the holy spirit: “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days I will pour our my spirit. And I will show won-

And it hall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered; for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord has said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.” Read also Acts 2:14-47 and Acts 20:16 for further reference.

ZIM ARMY ‘TAKES OVER’ RULE FROM MUGABE (93)! The Zimbabwean military has allegedly taken control of State institutions and has confined President Robert Mugabe and his wife to their house, saying that it is targeting criminals in government who are bent on destabilising the country. On Wednesday (November 15), President Zuma, on behalf of SADC, issued a statement expressing SADC's grave concern over the political situation and urged both the Zimbabwean government and the military to resolve the political crisis amicably. He also dispatched the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Minister of State Security, Bongani Bongo to Harare, to hold discus-

sions with the military and the 93 year old Zimbabwean President, who is reportedly confined to his home. President Mugabe fired his deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa last week, which led to Zimbabwe's army commander General Constantine Chiwenga declaring that the military will "step in" if the revolution is under threat. General Chiwenga has accused the ruling party ZANUPF of being infiltrated by counter-revolutionaries who wanted to destroy it. He issued a warning that the army would intervene if President Mugabe continued his tactics in an effort to help his wife, Grace Mugabe, succeed him as ZANU-PF and Zimbabwean President in party and national elections due next year.

“Everybody can use their skills and knowledge to help the victims of abuse...” writes Mbangwa Xaba

T

he United Nations General Assembly’s resolution 836 (IX) of 14 December 1954, recommended the that November 25th be observed by all countries as the Universal Children's Day. Since then, most nations ratified a number of children’s rights including the right to life, to health, to education and to play, as well as the right to family life, to be protected from violence, to not be discriminated, and to have their views heard.

In 1998, South Africa adopted the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children. For the past 19 years, November 25 as the Children’s Rights Day, has preceded and anchored the 16 Days of Activism Campaign. Our country has been an active member of the global community in observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children, the International Human Rights Day and the World Aids Day, all of which are part of the 16 Days Campaign. This year, we will be paying particular attention on the protection of children. Befittingly, this year’s 16 Days of Activism Campaign, themed, “Count me in,” aims to give impetus to the fight to eradicate violence against women and children. This is an immensely important battle in our context given that South Africa is historically a patriarchal and a violent society. This negative legacy of apartheid exists even today and it manifests itself into gender based violence and femicide. The patriarchal system manifests itself in many ways. For instance, girl children and young women continue to bear the brunt of poverty and associated social malaise typified by commercial sex work, teenage pregnancy, limited access to quality education, human trafficking, and that young women suffer from substance abuse, unemployment, gender oppression and gender-based violence. Even though equality between men and women, girls and boys is enshrined in our constitution today, in most cases, girls and women are accorded lower social status and find themselves under the control and authority of men. These unequal power relations in society lead to exploitation of young girl children, hence the need to fundamentally transform power relations in all sectors

of society beginning at home, going right through to the heart of the economy. Also; it appears we a very angry nation. This is reflected in our families where negative language gets used with reckless abandonment, thereby fueling embedded anger. Gauteng seems to be the hardest hit. We have seen femicides, homophobic attacks and the frightening tales of cruelty against children as told in the media. A 15-yeald boy takes his own life because his grandfather has an affair with his 14-year-old friend. Security guards sexually molest masses of children and in some cases, girls as young as eight years old are raped daily at school and at home. As part of efforts to ensure a coordinated and sustainable response to these challenges and spate of violent and brutal attacks of young women and children, the Gauteng Provincial Government has launched a five-year campaign under the theme "Invest in a Girl Child & Empower a Young Woman”. Premier David Makhura has tasked Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza to coordinator this Campaign. One of the activities of the campaign is a march against abuse of girl children and violence on young women to be attended by no less than 10 000 marchers the majority of which will be learners. The march will mark the launch 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children in Gauteng on Friday 24 November 2017 departing from Hunters Field, in Thokoza Ekurhuleni. It will take place every year on the 25 November to coincide with the United Nations Orange Unite Campaign which is observed globally every month on the 25th. The Ekurhuleni City was identified as a targeted area due to high incidence of gender based violence and other social pathologies affecting women and girls as well as the LGBTIQ Sector.

“Everyone can play a role; you can volunteer your time and make a contribution to the work of institutions, help plant a garden at a shelter, sponsor plastic tables and chairs for kids at a clinic or join an organisation as a counsellor.”

Time is of the essence
